The old Mopar cop cars rule! Back when I was 13, the county I lived here in Nebraska-the Sheriff and 3 Deputies drove 70 440 powered musclecars, the Sheriff had a dark green 70 Charger R/T, one Deputy had a Hemi Orange 70 Coronet R/T, another a Plum Crazy 70 Super Bee, and there was another one. All had the 2 red lights on the light bar. It was a pretty cool time. Most of the cop Mopars around here were C Bodies, better highway cars. Any B Bodies were usually used in towns. I drive a 71 Polara , 2 dr hdtp, ex-Nebraska State Patrol car. I found it in a salvage yard, it sat quite a few years. Got it back on the road in 2014 and have put 16,000 miles on it the last 10 years. It has the correct light bar withthe red lights and the long whip antenne. It's got TTI exhaust and a NOS Thermoquad and a 2.76 SureGrip for Interstate driving. It's so much to drive and everyone loves it.

If ya got the bucks to to a rotisserie restoration, this would be a good one to do.
I bought a 1974 Satellite Police Interceptor in 1976, blew the 400 engine very quickly, installed a 2 -4V 426 Hemi and I was off to the races. The car had a prepped Torqueflite Automatic with a Holeshot Torque converter and a high speed rear end, good for over 150 mph. I drove it and raced it for 3 years, and made a LOT of money racing it. I sold it after a fender bender that I had, and I wish I had kept it....almost immediately. Great upload, lots of memories here.
I grew up in New Hampshire. Back in ‘70 their troopers drove 4dr Fury’s with the 440 police motor. One trooper used to do U-turns right across from my house. On those hot summer nights, there was no mistaking the rumble of that 440. He’d turn around and lay into it in the other direction.

This car reminds me of the TV show Adam-12. Even though the show featured the 1968/1969 Plymouth Belvedere’s often referred to as 4 door Road Runners. It was one of my favorite shows for a long time.
In 1968 we were headed from Ft Dix to Philadelphia International Airport in a stretched Checker station wagon. I happened to notice that a car was keeping pace beside us in the multilane traffic, it had a neon-type light in in drivers rear side window that the officer could turn on - "PULL OVER" with lights above deck on rear seat. The drivers side door in white block letters said: Pennsylvania State Police Turnpike Interceptor. He was running a 426 hemi. A Corvette blew by us in traffic and it sound like the hemi was going to suck the hood through the carburetor. Several miles down the Corvette puked out in a cloud of steam.
My dad had one back in 72, we took it every where . Some how he made a tent for the trunk to be open and we slept in it. Mom Dad an myself, yes you can get 4 dead bodies in the trunk lol. I remember sitting between them no seat belt and racing guys. Thanks for the memories forgot all about that car.

My Favorite "Cop Car" bought at an Auction? A 1981 FORD Crown Victoria. Absolute Tank with Balls. Drove it for 3 years till a snowy day screwing around on the back roads. That Car ate tires like no tomorrow so suited myself as I was working at a junk yard at the time!
Second car I ever owned was a 69 Coronet 4 door, great car. Mine however was just a 318, but being in high school auto mechanics, i added a few upgrades to give it a bit more power. Had a lot of fun in that old beast.
Check out how many of these were in the original Gone in 60 Seconds man! Toby Haliki bought like 100 to crash in the film. Still cry for the sublime green R/T 71 Charger they rolled the garbage truck on top of! Besides Adam 12 had all the cool cop cars like this too.
My dad was a part time police officer. As such, he was able to order a 1968 Dodge Coronet 440 police wagon! It was equipped exactly the same as this car, but my dad was able to get metallic medium blue paint with a matching blue interior. He also got regular vinal bucket bench seats for the front, but the rear bench was all cop. Used to ride in the car with my mom when we went to the store. Sadly, she never let that car have its true potential.
The Gold Charger in the backgournd - My first car was a Gold with White vinyl top'69 Charger R/T 440 mag with Hurst shift manual posi rear - good times.
Watched as a 68 cruiser’s drive train disintegrate while chasing a corvette. There was a lot of noise, smoke and then parts on the road. That cop had a history of really bad luck. Somehow lost his revolver while chasing a criminal. A couple of years after that he accidentally shot himself in the foot. Everybody in town called him “four toes”. Surprisingly he survived long enough to retire.
What Police package does that 68 have? It's the first I've ever seen that didn't have a 140 mph "Certified" speedometer and mine and my Father before me have owned and were interested in since my Father's unicorn special project 61 Plymouth with 3-2 bbl 392 Hemi 3 speed manual, which had a. Certified speedometer 7 years prior to your 68. Not saying it wasn't a.madh up of parts on a group of cars that were put together on the assembly line with various parts from the regular parts bin to check out the viability of certain parts compatibility, and those cars were put into active police use. My favorite ever, 71 Dodge Polara, high speed pursuit package which was highway centered, it had a 2:78 (or close, just not that vivid a memory but it was 2:7 something and it'd shift into second at 72 and third at 110 and would wrap the needle around to.thf stop on the 140."Certified" speedometer. Arghh I remember a buddy trying to buy the mufflers from another buddy that had put headers on his Hemi roadrunner and just race it. The other muffler was a Corvair Turbo muffler, hence why high perf aftermarket mufflers were called Turbo mufflers because people had been buying Turbo mufflers from GM parts and they pretty well copied the design. I didn't mean to deep dive on mufflers, I meandered talking about that incredible induction sound of a 375 hp 440 powered Cop Cars and herd in Florida all State Troopers cars were those bad ass Mopars
My dad bought a 77 Plymouth Fury Cop Car. He was high bidder on it. It had a 440 engine, it had the certified 150 mph speedo. It had power steering with a power steering cooler, and a 100 amp alternator. The back doors would not open up from inside. It had a crappy Thermoquad carb on it. The floats were problematic. Sometimes when you went around a sharp turn it would shut off due to the fuel bowl on that side running out of fuel. I put a Edelbrock 750 carb on it and it ran much better. My brother was taking an autobody shop class at school and they painted the car light blue. 7 mpg in that boat.
It sure is intact and unmolested, I think it was a fair price. Chris I am 61 and back in the day we were chased down by police in Sattelites from 68 all the way to 74, they had Sattelites in our area, and the lights were in the grille, we called them under cover cops, brings back some memories.
1973, it's two AM on Sunday morning, a buddy and I are sitting on the steps of the old flying horses on Salisbury beach, in Mass. A 68-69 Plymouth Satellite (Road Runner) State Police cruiser slides by us sounding throaty, it had been touched, if ran rough, the cops back then used to meet up at the center, so we waited, and about fifteen minutes later he left, stopped at the intersection in front of us, and just smoked them till we couldn't see him anymore, fun times, fun times !!!
Don’t forget the 360* steering wheel horn ring. Certified speedo!larger brakes, heavy shocks, A/C cutout switch , big radiator etc. and in rare cases a persuit auxillery fuel pump system, heavy duty charging system.
Back in the day, my little town's cops had their personal cars that they took home. Some of them hopped up theirs while one dropped a 427L88 in his. Every once in a while when us kids were out late we'd hear him coming and run out to watch him fly by without any lights on! lol
as a kid I dropped a 400+ HP 455 in my 76 Cutlass S , with the factory highway gears it was scary fast , would try to break the 295/50s loose doing 70MPH at about ? a little over 2000 RPM ... it gave me a whole new respect to the old big block police cars Thats a cool piece of history
I had the opportunity to buy nearly the exact car, that was originally from Monterey, CA in turquoise. Tan interior, rubber floor mat. Someone had already stripped the dash of the speedometer etc. Lots of spare parts, 383 H-code, auxiliary coolers. Ended up being purchased by a well known parts vendor, who parted the car out unfortunately.

Back in the day when most of the Police mechanics side hustle was building race cars on the weekends and the parts they were designing/building didn't hit the aftermarket 5 minutes after they were introduced to the police market......
my Dad remembers hearing those 440 cornet and polara cop cars getting on the freeway, also is that a volt gauge under the dash? I heard that all the cop cars had them because they didn't want the cars to have amp gauges because they were a problem.

With the discontinued nature of the big dodges the Australians had to find a new solution. They opted to go the same route as Arkansas, Georgia, South Carolina and Florida. They bought Mustang GT performance packages
Cop cars generally had 2.76 airplane gears. The guys they were after were geared down for drag racing. Pretty easy to catch the drag car in open country.
I love 60's muscle cars and 60's cars with a police package. But, having owned a number of them, none of these could out run a modern twin turbo Ford Police Interceptor SUV.
My Mom had a '67 4 door Belvedere with a 273 engine that I got my driver's license on, and now every time when I watch reruns of Adam 12 and they are in a '69 Belvedere I can't stop thinking how cool it would be to own a plain looking '68-'69 4 door one like that with a 440 six-pack or 426 hemi under the hood to have for an everyday street rod sleeper, or maybe create a 4 door Roadrunner clone? 🤔
@@Brianscoronet Yes I had flashbacks of my Mother's car when seeing those '67s on some of the earlier season 1 episodes, I was strictly GM during my muscle car days back in the 60s & 70s owning a '64 Impala 327 SS & a '67 Chevelle 6 cylinder to 396 conversion, and I've never been much of a Ford person unless it was about a '68 Mustang fastback like the one use in Bullitt or a '68-'69 Boss 302, but I always admired the looks of the Mopar '68-'69 Chargers & Roadrunners, back when we wouldn't have even looked twice at a 4 door Belvedere, but I'd die to own a nice one now, man those were the best of times during the late 60s. 🙂
Someone who appreciates the rarity of that car got a bargain. I really hope they don’t just pull off the police spec parts and junk the rest, it deserves to be restored and left intact as a part of history.
They usually became tow cars for boats or campers since the police spec brakes and engine made them perfect, or went straight to taxi companies who drove them into the ground.
6:00 actually I dont even think this thing was correct for vanishing point, I think this is far more adam 12, and on that show when they were done with the cop cars, they crushed them, so I hope the guy really does fix it up and do it right, as this is more likely a 1 of 1, as no one saved those, and I wouldnt be the least bit surprised to find it show up in a cop museum down the road

Reminds me of the original home in 60 seconds movie from 1974!👍👍👍
Great Video again
A police car in New Zealand in 1968 was probably a Holden with a 186ci inline 6 cylinder.
Growing up my friends dad had one of these, it would smoke the tire, i say "tire" cause it was an open diff, right off the rim. One wheel peel buddy!
my Dad remembers hearing those 440 cornet and polara cop cars getting on the freeway, also is that a volt gauge under the dash? I heard that all the cop cars had them because they didn't want the cars to have amp gauges because they were a problem.
OK I got ask Chris who is Dammit Derek is your wife brother or a cousin .and how long has he been helping you with all your cars you work on .
6:54 fill cylinders with mmo after pulling plugs, wait a day, she'll 89% of the time turn
It works all the time, 89% of the time, every time. 😂
That is a time capsule being as it’s mostly intact and still part of the Motorola. Speed enforcement back then was also done with stop watches.
In Vanishing Point...The Cop Lights are Red...Remember the Mini-Bike scene...Strapped a Mini-Bike to the roof with a red light and using a hand crank siren...Watch Adam-12 Man 1968-1972...Cop lights are red and a long siren noise....
70's Monacos,Fury's ,Polaras where the Cops smile meters. 😊
1972 R.R. w/440-6
In 77 my Dad removed 440 for 318-2 during gas crisis. Everyone in family didn't realize the old engine in the barn & Road Runner parked in 84. 2005 i purchased both and reunited 440-6. Found out only 4-5 72 440-6 exist let alone R.R. whatcha think Birdsong ???
The Chrysler 300c SRT Highway patrol cars in Australia in marked and unmarked look awesome in recent mopars
With the discontinued nature of the big dodges the Australians had to find a new solution. They opted to go the same route as Arkansas, Georgia, South Carolina and Florida. They bought Mustang GT performance packages
300c is one of my favourite cars, even the diesel.
Reno PD has a 68 coronet fully restored for parades. Super clean car. Too bad I can't post a pic of it here.
Back in the day we made taxi cabs out of old cop cars! Mostly here in NY trouper cars.
Cop cars generally had 2.76 airplane gears. The guys they were after were geared down for drag racing. Pretty easy to catch the drag car in open country.
I guess this is what "sleeper" and "fly casual" really meant. Before radar it was all about how fast you looked like you were going.
I love 60's muscle cars and 60's cars with a police package. But, having owned a number of them, none of these could out run a modern twin turbo Ford Police Interceptor SUV.
You need Vice Grip Garage to come get it going...! 😊
Serpico 1152 if u watch the first season of Adam 12 there's still a lot of 1967 belvedere cop cars in use
Most old police cars from that era had the motors yanked and were probably crushed.
They usually became tow cars for boats or campers since the police spec brakes and engine made them perfect, or went straight to taxi companies who drove them into the ground.
Bad Mother Flower In It's Prime!!🤙
I have had to access my fleet too and get rid of some cars for the better good.
What about suspension and brakes? Just curious.
Man sweet ride 😊
Derek needs to get a police car and see if he can catch your General
My diesel teacher always said it's locked up tighter than a bull's ass at fly time
What a perfect sound effect of those 4bbrls!!!😂 Whopp Whaa..
As soon as I saw it I knew it was a 68 Coronet. Mine was dark green with factory A/C.
Chis, that chopped up B body next to it made me wonder. Do you still own Bahama Mama ?
Would like to know same
No, sold to a buddy
@@junkerupI have 2 chargers but I really loved Bahama mama. I still go back and watch those vids.
@@junkerup Now it's Damn it, Chis instead of Damn it Derek 🤣
@junkerup Damn it Chris lol
I have a 68 Coronet 500 without the ugly grille. Hey I've seen those 68 Coronets on "Ironside"....Eve ooooo best looking police woman ever!
Hey Chris thank you for the video
Such a cool piece of history. I really hope it will get restoration that it needs. A muscle car with all the doors 😎
C body cop cars fear nothing....NOTHING!!
Dad had a 440 interceptor in a New Yorker. Still could bust a 455 GTO. My dad said his 383 was better. I can’t win because I was too young then.
Best cop car still is the 69 dodge polara CHP
