  • This is the tallest structure in Romania, not just tallest chimney! At 351m high, it is also the 3rd tallest in Europe. This thing is scary tall and dominates the skyline in Baia Mare. Its no longer in use, sitting in a largely abandoned former processing plant for copper and gold and mainly and is not openly accessible. People do sneak in and climb it and no way in the world you would get me to do that!!
    We asked at the front gate if we could go in to look and film and had a guy make a call and was told yes, then we walked in from the front gate, through the abandoned factory site and rubble and overgrown bushes, to get to it. The video does not do justice to the size and height of this chimney, it is huge! Standing at the base looking up you get dizzy at just how high it is. The guy said it was all built manually and from the inside out, with cranes inside and it has foundations full of lead, over 30m deep in the soil.
    It was built to try carry toxic fumes away from the plant which processed copper and gold from surrounding mines. Unfortunately the by-product of the processing including lead and sulphur dioxide in the air, meant the town became one of the most polluted places in Europe. The chimney was meant to release the toxic emissions high enough to carry them away from the town, but that often didn't work and the town suffered from acid rain and other towns nearby simply received the toxic emissions. The guy said the whole former factory site is #toxic.
    That said though as a bit of history, the chimney is simply an amazing structure and up close you just marvel at how things like this are built and all manually. Don't let what I say deter you from going to #Baia Mare in any way though, its a beautiful part of the country and worth a visit.
    This is part 7 of a quick road trip from #Bucharest up North of Romania and back. The other videos are on the channel at / bitsofeurope
    Stay safe...sanatate!

    The acid rain and all the polution happened before this tower was built. They built this tower in the 90s and afaik (one of) the objective(s) was to disperse the polution by throwing it at higher altitudes where the air currents were stronger. Baia Mare is located in a low area surrounded by hills and this results in low air circulation so with the old chimneys most of the polution fell down over the city because there was little wind to pick it up. This new chimney is taller than the southern and western hills so there are air currents to pick up the polution and send some love to the nearby villages while Baia Mare would get less. So the polluted area would grow, but the pollution density would be smaller. Luckily for the nearby villages and for Baia Mare itself not long after this tower was built the plant closed - as did other plants and factories related to mining - and after several decades Baia Mare could once again breathe cleaner air

      Yes I agree with what you say probably from local knowledge, mine just based on what I read and talking to the guys who still work there and have been there for 20 years. Not sure if you know that the plant is closed, but the site still has active areas where a company is cleaning up and also reprocessing old waste to try and extract any remaining ore. The fact they built the chimney as you say, was to try and elevate it high enough that the pollution was carried out of the valley and a lot did, but also a lot didn't and the pollution that did, was given with not so much love lol, to neighboring villages. The air quality is fine now, smelled ok!...its just the soil inside the plant. One of the guys did mention that another factory had just started somewhere on the outskirts of the city again and a chimney was back in action, which one though and where, I have no idea. Anyway its all a part of history which we learn good and bad from and that should not detract from the beauty of the town and the location, which is superb. I will go back for a better look for sure...ty for comment my friend...sanatate.

    giant industrial site in ruins, you'd think the economy of the city is bad but no it looks like it's doing quite well from last vids.

      It's the only blemish on the town, but it had a massive impact on the health of people there, but that factory aside, yes the place is beautiful and appears to be doing well. I get the sense Baia Mare has a large number of people work abroad and bring money back to renovate etc.

      It's been more than 20 years now since Baia Mare does not rely on the mining industry.

    • @BitsofEurope
      @BitsofEurope  2 роки тому +1

      @@andreiamg8393 Seems very clean now and supporting itself well, just has some residual impact from the mining processing. Also Romaltyn the Russian company is still extracting remaining minerals from the waste product and cleaning as it goes. One of the guys I was talking to at the site also said another old mine had reopened and was putting out emmisions again...either way, it's an awesome place in a really beautiful part of the country....stay safe.

      It was made that high to try take the toxic fumes well away from Baia Mare and stop the acid rain that polluted the town. It was high enough for wind to carry the fumes away but didn't always work. Built in 1995.

    you entered there the legal way and asking for permissions. to make things understand better, when seen like in minute 7:03, theres a quite easy way to sneak inside by coming to the left not more than 200/300 meters apart where theres a big hole in the walls around the area or another small hole under the walls where a human can go quite easily. and once inside, the chimney is much closer to the entrace you took, and above all there's almost no risk to be seen so you can climb it peacefully

    • @BitsofEurope
      @BitsofEurope  7 місяців тому +1

      Yeh we asked legal way and there was no problem. Worker even said climb if you want and I looked t him and laughed and said NFW!! We were not there to climb my friend, just to have a look, no way in hell you could pay me enough to climb that. N..E..V..E..R... 😅. But yes, was a big hole around the back in the wall and many places people could get in and close without being seen. Thanks for comment...are you planning to climb it lol :)

      @@BitsofEurope that's amazing the worker told you can climb it like if it wasn't a big deal, i had no idea and no clue something like that could happen! i've always been scared by social and legal consequences by sneaking and climbing these structures, like the one in pitesti or in trbovlje slovenia. but the closeup you gave us of the surrouding area and what the town looks like was an alternative video and very interesting

    Trista istorie a oamenilor, a industriei, infrastructurii, agriculturii si în general a României ce s-a lasat influentata din exterior, fara întelepciune. Se vorbeste aici de poluare, de parca cei din Europa de Vest, sau SUA, Rusia, Turcia, China, sau alte state ce se pretind "dezvoltate", n-ar polua, când, de fapt, nu doar ca polueaza, ci si exploateaza si polueaza si la altii, în alte state (vezi Glina, Groapa de gunoi din Pasul Mestecanis, Groapa de deseuri radioactive de la Navodari si câte altele!), pe care le destabilizeaza politic, economic, militiar si le subjuga. Dumnezeu sa ne ierte, sa ocroteasca mereu glia noastra stramoseasca si neamul nostru românesc unit mereu.

      My friend there is no doubt that big foreign companies pollute all around the world, its a fact. My comments are not about the politics behind something, as we can all find and interpret hidden agendas in anything and we all see things differently. My comment is simply about the pollution that did occur and is still there, not critical of the place; a fact is simply a fact irrespective of how it occurred. Remember also that a country's government is the ultimate judge of who can come and do business in its own backyard. Foreign mining companies can't operate here without permission and if they do, then again the government body responsible needs to make sure they do the right thing, otherwise they will of course exploit it to maximise profits. I have seen it in Asia, I have seen the impact it has destroying small nations in the Pacific. Unfortunately so much was privatised here and so much industry that turned its own precious resources into product, just collapsed domestically. But I agree that I hope Romania always remains strong and independent and Romanians remain proud of their history and retain that sense of nationalism. Its my home now, so I support that as well.

    Is the rope still there? Any other ways to get on the ladder? Can one get on the ladder inside of the structure where there's water? Really interested in climbing this, already done many chimneys.

    • @BitsofEurope
      @BitsofEurope  2 роки тому +3

      The rope was still there and pretty sturdy it would get you up to the ladder. The worker who took me there said they don't check the integrity of the ladder anymore but he said built to last. There is a ladder internally as well but it's also been cut back so you can't start from it. Only the outside option and only at that point I showed. There are old iron bits in the wall if you are a climber maybe use as leg and hand holds. It's friggin imposing! Good luck to you mate.
