    SPOILERS!
Spoiler for Part2: the card works now. Also the reason it didn't boot at the end of this video is because I didn't clean the pads of the second power stage that I removed and there was a solder bridge.

just the average reference 980Ti experience :D
i saw some people use a dremel to literally grind the dead powerstage away when it welded itself to the board. that way you keep the pads in working order. but it's a lot of work

If it doesn't budge with hot air at the usual temps then dremel it all off to prevent having to fix pads and traces.

If you allow me to ask. I have a rtx 3060ti zotac twin edge old pcb with 6pin power version. I noticed that this particular pcb design has slots for up to 8 phases included a combination of chokes, caps and mosfets. But, only 6 phases are populated on this card. Maybe i am dumb but i have plans to waterblock this graphics card. So, my big question is that possible to upgrade this board with those left components to work propely ? Including those components will it be able to performance better under Overclock? To comparison i have checked some other components as vrm/memory controllers, they are the same as the rtx 3060ti FE which it has 8 phases already. I would be glad if you can reply. Thank you.

Do you know what is the model number of the R33 inductor? In my GPU one of the two burned out so I was searching a replacement for it, the rest of the board seems fine, no other burn marks or smell, no melted solder marks on other components. Also the card is not dead(the PC turns on with it but the screen remains black, still light on; LCD display) and it seems that the display recognizes togheter with the PC.

You should look for the 5v line. There´s a componente (CI i think). When it's damage, it shoot back, and it´s goes to the VRM line, and burn it. And you can replace VRM, and it will burn again and again.

i have a kingpin 980 ti laying around and i think the memory mosfet was shorted by metal because the previous owner mounted a water block without the distance rings. the card boots but its missing a view screws. memory displays some lines under load, games or firestrike results in a freeze

Is this the EVGA sc+ 980ti? I have one that failed on me gradually. No artifacts or anything, it just crashed the pc completely, then worked again with a reboot. Happened more and more often until it didn't boot anymore. I had it cooled by an NZXT kraken g10. Any idea if that could be a powerstage? I also have a broken gtx 770, perhaps I could borrow parts from there..

    • @welshe222

Yes. Your Powerstage has most likely failed. Its very common with SC+ especially ACX 2.0 models.

Hello, amazing video. Your effort is highly appreciated. I have another issue I believe and when mine stopped working I noticed a liquid-like substance on the pins which connect to the motherboard and it stopped working. I don't know if it damaged anything on the board. I tried to clean it but the result remains. Any suggestions?

I remember you said that ddr5 mobos should come with 2 dimms but now with you testing 4x16 what do you think now? With the upcoming x670/e mobos which would be better? 2x32 or 4x16? Since this is amd and we saw how last gen 4 sticks did better than 2 sticks with you even respoding to comments on that hardware unboxed video
In ddr4 4x single rank sticks (creating dual rank) always beats 2x dual rank sticks (dual rank)
So How about this, Here i assume Both the 4x8 and 2×16 are dual rank. So if 4x Single rank sticks > 2 x dual rank sticks. Despite both working as dual rank dual channel. What would happen in ddr5 where a 16gb stick is SINGLE RANK?
So you'll have 4×16 single rank sticks (creating dual rank).
Wouldnt this be the better option? Looking at how 4x8 single rank sticks beats all the other ones. (2x16) This should work right? It will the same as 4x8 but rather than 32gb you'll get 64gb. While beating the other ones in fps.
    Right? Will this work?

2xDR is generally better than 4xSR. This is especially true at high clocks since 4xSR is a signalling and timing nightmare.

Hi. You can use an ESR meter to check the vrm, usefull especially on cards with a lot of power stages. You can check out this video:
    ua-cam.com/video/bMUzTGnvrbU/v-deo.html
Around the 30 minute mark Richard gives a very good explanation on how to check the vrm and also draws a schematic so you can easily understand how the testing actually works. Also he is a pleasure to chat with and I am sure he will be more than happy to give his input on projects like these.

Was this something that applied to all 980ti’s?
I bought a gigabyte g1 980ti shortly after launch I think maybe 7 years ago, it’s been on a modded bios since then and it’s still being used in a different pc without issue, have I just got lucky so far?

    • @ActuallyHardcoreOverclocking
      @ActuallyHardcoreOverclocking  2 роки тому +3

the gigabyte cards like to have the memory VRM blow up. EVGA SC and reference blowers blow up the Vcore(and sometimes memory). The thing is some cards get lucky and don't fail for a LOOOOOOONG time

U can tell its dead from the piece of tape on the pcie that says "dead" ;)
Doing boardwork and filming it at the same time looks real annoying. I find two hands is barely enough for soldering on its own some times.
Anyone know what temp it has to hit to weld itself to the board?

690 kind of perfect as a parts source. Das ist Richtic, unless ya'll fry the component with too much heat. To lift these welded components rather than ruin the pcb, if ya'll use a grinding pen it won't ruin the board. Nvidia really screwed the pooch on the 980. I believe if I get an old ti I will fuse these.
