  • Barkhad Abdi broke out into Hollywood in his debut film, Captain Phillips alongside Tom Hanks. After leaving Somalia at the age of seven, and then eventually moving to the United States years later, Abdi responded to an open call he saw on TV and landed the role as the character Muse. Abdi also talks about the piracy in Somalia, and adjusting the American lifestyle, like seeing snow for the very first time. Barkhad went from the couch to the screen and is the definition of overnight celebrity.

    Wow, Im a fan of Sway even from Wake Up show, but Sway and Heather made Abdi look like he came from Mars. "Did you even know who Tom Hanks was?", "Did you have any people who participated in that?", "I didnt understand how you got to Minnesota?". It baffles me how one can ask ignorant questions like that on air. They treated him as it was his first time in the states the day of this interview. Im second guessing Sway.... Wishing you the best Abdi.

    It takes a life of hardship and loss to be this humble and understanding. I recently read that Abdi only made $65000 for his role in Captain Phillips and the movie grossed over 50 million. It's really a disgrace that he didn't get paid a lot more simply because he was new. Tom Hanks will walk away with over 15 million but this poor man is now broke (from what I've read). maybe someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

    • @YoungMannie92
      @YoungMannie92 10 років тому +28

      That's how life works. They more you build up your catalog or resume, The more money you can negotiate over time. You can't compare Tom Hank's resume to Barkhad's resume. Barkhad is a first time actor & he recieved standard screen actor's pay which is suppose to be $60,000. He was actually paid $65,000. They was no wrong doing there. In fact, Jonah Hill also had to take a pay cut & was paid standard $60,000 for his role in " The Wolf of Wall Street ". But the Reward was worth the risk because it ended up getting him an Oscar nomination, The same went for Barkhad, even tho he was only paid $65,000, He did a really good job & got an oscar nomination which will allow him negotiate more & better roles with more money in the future. It's simple patients & sacrifice that's all !

    As a Somali person I enjoyed this interview. I loved the fact that one of us was actually invited to the table to have a conversation about us.
    Most of the time its people who don't know us having a BS convo about us and there is no one in sight to fact check anything they say. I notice people in the comments are looking at Sway side-eyed and saying he doesn't know anything about us, BUT THATS OK. Most Americans are exactly like that.
    At least he took the time took to talk to us instead of having this discussion with someone whos not Somali. That's a big deal!
    I remember watching the movie Black Hawk Down and realizing they didn't even have a single Somali person on set.
    I've always been a fan of your show and I respect you even more now. Much love bro.

    to the guy who posted that Barkhad had trouble with the interview because of a language barrier: He came to the US at the age of seven. He understands & speaks English like a native English speaker. He is a soft spoken man & he thinks a bit before responding. Yes, it is a sensitive topic because the Somali piracy began as Barkhad mentioned, because commercial fishing ships were in Somali waters (illegally) stealing fish (literally tons of fish) putting poverty stricken Somalis out of business. They began to capture the ships to reclaim their catch; the ships became armed; it got dangerous; they began to capture other kinds of ships which were unarmed. It is very risky & some pirates are killed in their attempt to over take a ship. The host was wrong in saying that the pirates would have killed captain & crew. They usually do not, as they must be returned safely with the ship & cargo to get their ransom. For more info. read the book "Pirates of Somalia" It is fascinating.

      He came to the U.S. at age 14. he left Somalia at age 7, moved to and lived in Yemen for another 7 years until him and his family won the Green Card Lottery. Don't spit shit if you don't know. With that being said, English is not his first language, he has admitted before in his interviews. He speaks clearly but he is not fluent in the English Language.
