Only the Gajah Mada, master of all four island, could stop them, but when the Nusantara needed him most, he already dead. Hundreds of years passed, my brother and I discovered the new successor, a nationalists named Soekarno. I thoroughly recommend people travel to Indonesia to experience the wealth of history and culture that they have on above the normal shopping and partying that a lot of people do. It's a truly interesting and beautiful place.
Fun fact for extra credit about Melacca: the word Melacca (or the version I learn from school: Melaka) was named after the tree Parameswara was sitting under. He spotted a mouse deer kicking his dog into a river; making the future ruler decide that yes, this place would the new kingdom.
For those who get confused when Indonesia having its independence: Indonesia declared independence in 17 August 1945, but the Dutches want Indonesia in their hands. After Christianity came in the 16th century with Portuguese and Dutch colonizers, the religious map in Indonesia was not like 10:00 anymore. The eastern part, especially Papua, the eastern part of the Nusa islands, and the northern part of Sulawesi are now predominantly Christian. Sumba Islands dominated by Roman Catholics. Hinduism became dominant in Bali and a small part of East Java. But the influence of Hindus and Buddhists still dominates in Muslims in Java. The western part of Indonesia, especially Sumatra, Islam is very dominating. Aceh, the westernmost province in Indonesia is the only one out of 34 provinces in Indonesia that establishes Islamic sharia law.
Islam was very scarce in eastern indonesia even when the dutch arrived. Islam didn't start picking up after multiple moluccan sultanates convert locals there, even then, papuans and portuguese holdings managed to be converted before islam arrived there.

Another thing to remember is that Rome's holdings were mostly around the sea, especially during the post Punic War days of the Republic. Water was crucial to their power as well.
What if we also complain about Rome's colonialism? Edit: And did Majapahit spread technology? I imagine at least Sumatra was the same or ahead of Java technologically, and innovation primarily came from India and China... (though the series here did bring up cultural innovation they spread, but Rome was more about practical and engineering innovation)
You can hardly conmpare them Majapahit was a trade empire with vassals to them that lasted for a bit over 200 years, while the roman empire was an occupying force that included the conquered territory as provinces and that lasted for more than a millenia
Ehh... Unless you count the the East Roman Empire commonly known as Byzantium, the Roman empire only lasted two or three centuries before collapsing under its own weight and foreign invaders.
Appreciate your work here, just commenting on perhaps not oversimplifying the Islamisation of Java too much. Demak's rulers were descendants of Majapahit's (Raden Patah was a child of the Majapahit Raja and a Chinese princess) and Majapahit was destroyed instead by that same old neighbour vassal kingdom which took down Singhasari, Kediri. Demak (and all subsequent Javanese kingdoms) consciously sought to claim the legacy of Majapahit as its successor. Unlike elsewhere, Islam in Java is very syncretic and the new Islamic kingdoms never rejected their Hindu-Buddhist past, yet embraced them.
This claimed lineage is of questionable validity, and the source is from a later period (Mataram era(?)), if I'm not mistaken... As was said in the first episode, many kings claimed Majapahit descent to validate their rule, and this is true. Also, yes, while Islam in Java is highly syncretic (until recently, at least) the early rulers DID think of themselves as different in faith to the Majapahits, and the makers did a pretty good job of explaining the gradual (Post-Melaka), then sudden (Demak era) phases of Islamization.
just additional information : -founder of Demak(Sultanate of Demak) at 9:16 is Raden Patah which is the son of the last king of Majapahit Brawijaya V -kingdom of Sunda, which mentioned on the previous episode, survive for centuries after Majapahit fallen -kingdom of Sunda is way older than majapahit itself, actually the founder of Majapahit, Raden Wijaya son from Sundanese Prince(king of galuh) and her mother itself also princess of shingasari, plus he married to princess, daughter of last king of Shingasari, thats how he became son in law of Shingasari king.
Sunda fell because of the Sultanate of Banten. Some courtiers from the Sunda kingdom later escaped and became the Tenger people (not Tengri) in present-day Banten province. They retain their Hindu-Buddhist-animism belief, as well as rejecting technology. Like Amish in USA. Had one visited my school in 2010. Also, the Tenger divided into two, the outside Tenger, which allow some modern technology, and inner Tenger, which remained virtually isolated.
Just studying for my finals from Indonesian history and I'd like to say a huge thank you to the creators of this incredibly accurate story of Majapahit. I love that you included the rise of Islam and Malacca because it helped me to see Majapahit in the context of the whole region. And the drawing of Singapore's lion is so cute. Maybe you could do another one on the Mataram II (Islam) kingdom haha
One correction. Parameswara is King of Palembang, once the capital of Sri Vijaya. His kingdom was attacked by King of Java. He fled to Singapore, was known as Temasik/Temasek at the time, killed a Siamese representative in Singapore, fled Singapore and created Malacca.
No there's no king of Palembang that time. The succesion of the king's blood in Palembang vanished when Sumatra was taken by the Dharmasraya but Dharmasraya still have their royal blood in west Sumatra. Even the sultan of the Sultanate of Palembang didn't even have the Srivijayan royal blood.
Dear Malaysians, please get your history right. There were no kings in Palembang after the conquest of Srivijaya. The succession line was effectively cut off and Palembang was at best a tributary. This confusion usually stems from the identity of Parameswara, who allegedly came from Palembang. "Parameswara" is a title, not a name. It's the male equivalent of "parameswari" or modern day "permaisuri". Parameswara, the founder of Singapore (established 1299) is not the same person with Parameswara, the founder of Malacca (established 1400). There's like a hundred years between the two! The former is Sang Nila Utama, the latter is Iskandar Shah. Neither was a king of Palembang, there's no evidence to the claim.
Bebek Dragon It looks like our sources conflicted with each other. Because there’s two contradicting source, Malay annals believe that Parameswara (Iskandar Shah) was the descendant of the founder of Singapore, which is Sang Nila Utama. But historians doubt about the accuracy of Malay annals on Singapore. In Malaysian history textbook, we have the same story (Origins of Parameswara) as in sources from Suma Oriental. Which suggest that Parameswara was a Prince of Palembang. He challenged Javanese rule over Palembang, the Javanese attacked and drove him out of Palembang escaping to Singapore. When he arrived at Singapore, he killed the local ruler. Then he ruled Singapore for 5 years before he was driven out. Then he founded Malacca.

when i heard zheng he i got confused for a moment until i remembered his name in another saying : Cheng Ho Extra : majapahit felt like colonialism eh? some sundanese excluding myself had one of the worst burns of history, even re enacting the relationship of Majapahit and the sundanese kingdom in a play is considered "re-opening of an old wound" at some point by sundanese historians
Wrong again. It's Wade-Giles, the preferred system by Sinologists prior to 1970 and still the de-facto system used in the Republic of China (Taiwan). Cantonese spelling (Lau Romanization) would be Tseng Wo, or in Jyutping system, Zeng Wo.
I feel like its a little unfair to call the majapahit colonistic, I mean we don't call rome that but the interests and powers of rome were clearly centered in the Italian peninsula and especially the city of rome its self with provinces essentially being colonial esque for most Rome's history. Perhaps another term would more accurately describe it.
@@jts1702a I don't know who is correct but both of you are giving us useless information. If you want to convey the name to speakers of other languages try using phonetic notation. To clarify, it's useless because "Cheng Ho", "Tseng Wo" and "Zeng Wo" all sound completely different in my language and I'm willing to bet that is the same for many other languages if not most. In other words I still have no clue how to pronounce it.

Yes Majapahit is big in the size of teritory. But The Indonesian Empire that really had play big influence in the International politic and trade was Srivijaya. Also, they reigned longer and more orderly than Majapahit (about 600 years). Even now, the national language of Indonesian and Malaysian is rooted from the Srivijayan languange, that is Malayu language.
The sad thing about Indonesia, that have repeated over even in the history of old. Is that we're slowly being torn apart again. By beliefs, by race, by everything. Sure, we claim to embrace diversity, but people prefer leaders who are not chinese and christian, speaking of politics. Yes not all of us are those kind of people. But the majority of people are easily swayed by the manipulation of the upper class by the use of religion and race.

As a Singaporean, although you didn’t talk much about Singapore during this time period, I’m happy that you mentioned it and talked briefly about it and it’s fall. Because believe it or not, our goddamned history books never mentioned it, or covered much about our ancient history in the 1300s. Its almost depressing how little you hear of it in my country. The closest we have to actual records of that time period was a museum that barely garnered any interest with the locals, and preschool textbooks that effectively summarised that period as ‘some dude from Malaysia came, saw and decided he liked the place, before planting his foot on it.

As the last episode came up, I wanna say thank you very much for all hard work. . Just have one thing for all, including indonesian, about the most correct way to read "Majapahit". It is Maw-Jaw Pa-it ('h' is silent). It derives from Maja (read:maw-jaw), the bitter (pahit) fruit. My village name is still has its correlation, Curahmojo (Mojo-Creek). It is 40km from the center of Majapahit kindom.
You know, as a person who birth and grown up in Demak, I still feel but hurt every time someone said "Demak destroy Majapahit". BECAUSE ITS NOT!!! The king of Demak is legal successor of Maharaja of Majapahit while Bali is just group of rebel noble who kill their ruler. King of Demak crush the rebel who kill his father. Its reasonable revenge. And more importantly, Demak not burn the Majapahit script, but Noble Rebel take all the scripture to Bali with them. Really, as some one who love both Majapahit and Demak, I'm always feel buthurt every time they mention Majapahit is crushed by Demak. Demak is Majapahit! All hail Raden Wijaya! The Maharaja of Majapahit! All Hail Raden Patah! The Sultan of Demak!
Excelon The 4th Avalon Heirs brawijaya is only recorded in poem written centuries after the fall of majapahit, no solid inscription mention the name brawijaya. Civil war (paregreg) in 15th century torn apart majapahit, until one of the belligerent descendant embrace islam and defeated the other party.
Interesting that the successor kingdoms like Demak that you mentioned or others like Acheh and Mataram never became as big as Majapahit again. Guess competition was rising. Good take on the importance of Bali and why it's Hindu.

You've touched a bit in this episode. But I really think you guys should do a full series of the Indonesian national revolution ( fight for the independence) someday. world war 2 barely just ended then, and liberation (for europeans anyway) dont apply to this part of the world. Its a bloody conflict that most people dont even know. Atrocities commited by both sides(bussiness as usual).
The Indonesians, with sharpened bamboos and old Japanese weapons, versus a rearmed Dutch that possesses modern US and UK weapons, aircraft, and tanks. One time, the Indonesian Air Force at the time was 6 Japanese planes. The Indonesians mostly resort to guerilla warfare. It was said that the Vietnamese guerilla fighters in the Indochina wars learned guerilla warfare from a book written by an Indonesian general from the Revolution. The war ended due to diplomacy at the Round Table Conference in The Hague. Part of is because the USA is threatening to cut the Marshall Aid if Netherlands don't back down.

It's good that the memory of this kingdom still exists in art, culture, religion and history, but I understand the message at the end that the use of history for patriotic reasons can become dangerous. Idolizing the supposed heroes of the past is part of xenophobic ideologies. Also, I agree that water has been a shaper of human history. Oceans connect everyone in this planet, determine the currents that can be taken and bring elements of change.
Hi Extra Credits, amazing content as always! Have you considered to cover something from the history of India and China? I am Indonesian myself and realizing how much India and China influence the history of Indonesia, I really want to know more about them!
They are doing the Chinese revolution soon (there is a Viking series before). It would be nice to learn more older history however, maybe Total War could sponsor Three Kingdoms era series next year since that game is coming out.
Indonesia has been largely Java-centric. All of the presidents have been Java. Half of the population live in this island. During the New Order era, the infrastructure development was concentrated in Java. Sometimes we joke around by saying "Jawalah Indonesia (Indonesia is Java)" instead of "Jayalah Indonesia (long live Indonesia)". However, things has started to change for the better lately. Later presidents pay attention to outside Java as well. As ethnicism fade, regional differences has become irrelevant. Younger generations don't care whether their spouse come from the same ethnic background or not. We are one nation. Unity in diversity. Anyway, I can't thank you enough for making this great series!
I love how this vid also covered some insight about the history of Malaysia & Singapore! I've always learned history from Indonesia's POV and was curious about our sibling nations' side of the history. Now I understand that their history of culture is tied greatly with the Sultanate of Malacca & how the arrival of Zheng He with his fleet impacted them as well. Great video!

You can't really complain about Majapahit's role in indonesian culture, considering that the Roman Empire is so astonishingly similar.
Another thing to remember is that Rome's holdings were mostly around the sea, especially during the post Punic War days of the Republic. Water was crucial to their power as well.
@@robertjarman3703 Or Egypt. Its power mostly radiated from the Nile.
You raise good points. These might come up in the Lies portion. Which I think for this series is gonna be a good one!
"Unlike elsewhere, Islam in Java is very syncretic and the new Islamic kingdoms never rejected their Hindu-Buddhist past, yet embraced them."
FALSE
Syncretic indeed

@@um-vl6on please elaborate
just additional information :
-founder of Demak(Sultanate of Demak) at 9:16 is Raden Patah which is the son of the last king of Majapahit Brawijaya V
-kingdom of Sunda, which mentioned on the previous episode, survive for centuries after Majapahit fallen
-kingdom of Sunda is way older than majapahit itself, actually the founder of Majapahit, Raden Wijaya son from Sundanese Prince(king of galuh) and her mother itself also princess of shingasari, plus he married to princess, daughter of last king of Shingasari, thats how he became son in law of Shingasari king.

Still love the content. Waiting for History of Malaysia!!! 🇲🇾
May we can be one country in future
Bebek Dragon
It looks like our sources conflicted with each other.

Learned this in school but never this detailed. Props to you guys. it’s amazing when you try to connect the dot of the past to know days.
You are fake news
Interesting that the successor kingdoms like Demak that you mentioned or others like Acheh and Mataram never became as big as Majapahit again. Guess competition was rising. Good take on the importance of Bali and why it's Hindu.
I like how we are starting to see familiar characters from the series. It looks like Extra History is showing us how our history is gradually converging
Thank you for your help to raise awareness about both recent earthquakes in Indonesia. My brothers and sisters in Palu and Lombok need all the help we all can give. So thank you again for sharing the information to the world and for your consideration, it helps them a lot.
Man, I'm in love with all Extra History Episodes!
Some favorites are New Kelly, Admiral Yi Sun-sin, Otto Von Bismarck, Hiawatha, Khosrau Anushirawan, The Great Northern War, and more!
I'd love to see an episode on Zheng He or Pedro the Magnanimous!
Unfortunately bill wurtz still is not able to pronounce this place.
Ultra_epic_guy so true
OH THANKS NOW I'M GOING TO WASTE 19 MINUTES AND 25 SECONDS OF MY LIFE.

The lion of Singapore has to be one of my favorite characters in EH. He's so chill and pink.
Zheng He was the eunuch with the biggest jewels ever.
He's the trusted advisor of Yongle Emperor after all, helping him from escaping Mongol purge to overthrow Yongle's brother. And appointed by emperor himself to start and supervise the construction of Ming's Treasure fleet, becoming Supreme Commander of Ming's Navy in the process.
And shows that he cut more than just deals in his lifetime
@@keithng5249 well its not like he cut his dingus himself
It is simply *awesome* to see my country mentioned at the start of the video. Hopefully one day you will do a series on Singapore, a small country of 42km, but one of the richest.
Thank you so much for making this series.
If there is one thing that we learned from this episode, it's that water is life in more ways than one.
Really odd when it's the story of my ancestors. Really love the artwork.
Sultan Perak is Srivijaya descendants, Sang Nila Utama, founder of Kingdom of Singapura/Kerajahan Singapura, n later Melaka. fall of Melaka, split into Johor-Riau n Perak. only Perak survive .
I’m a Malaysian and I’m a fan of your amazing channel 😀
it's my first time wacth this channel and it is great. as indonesian i am gratefull and lucky now i already complete study about history of indonesia on my own
I like it good job guys! As a Thai I’m happy to know my neighbor’s story.
THIS SERIES IS ABOUT MAJAPAHIT EMPIRE. NOT ABOUT INDONESIA
@@DBT1007 it doesnt escape my observation believe me.But I could argue that these 2 are related. However Im merely giving EC a sugestion for another EH series. Given that they touched the surface in this one. I think the national revolution have the merits to be its own EH series somewhere down the line. Im convinced that you jumped the gun on this one and that you need to fix your keyboard.
@erick meyer if you watched EH a lot you'd see that they already did. Sengaku jidai, simo bolivar, bismark. Those tell stories about a formation of a country(some from the point of view of a person that was the driving force of it.)
But then again im not saying the should do all history surounding independence movement. Whoever come to that conclusion has serious problem of comprehension TBH. Im just giving them sugestion for a related topic that they already lightly touched in this series.
Do I need to explain more? Im surprized that people got iritated by someone givng others harmless sugestion.
@erick meyer nope. the southeast asia is the most diverse region. u can't summarize all countries are same.
Look at US and European countries about their diversity and look at Indonesia at their diversity. the west think diversity is a threat. Black skinned ppl always a problem in the west.. and now the problem is about the immigrant.
While Indonesia already live in diversity since long time ago. Even.. u can see in this video, Majapahit already so diverse. from arabic, malay, and chinese ppl in the west to the black skinned melanesian ppl in the east
“burning their scrolls...”
me: NOOOOOOOOOO
They claim to be a 'islam' kingdom but they didn't do what prophet muhammad saw rules about war
That hurt me inside. God knows how much valuable information was lost.
As Indonesian i do really apreciate and helped with your video. Thank you so much
Thank you for sharing these videos about a part of history I didn't know about.
Hope all you peeps in Lombok and Palu get better!
Haha javanesia, and now gajah mada can rest in peace because in 1950 sunda/galuh/pajajaran has become a part of nusantara. LoL
Majapahit invaded the Mekong and vassalized the Pandyas of South Asia, for more information see HB sarkar
