  • Welcome back to our series celebrating authors through readings of their most famous works! Things have taken a turn for the terrifying this week, however, as we continue our celebration of Halloween horrors…
The first ever mention of a reanimated mummy in English literature comes from this 1827 novel, written by Jane Wells Webb Loudon, but first published anonymously in three smaller volumes (for easy transportation). As the title implies, it is also an early example of the then-burgeoning genre of science fiction, with references made to steam-powered automaton surgeons and lawyers, ladies of the court wearing trousers, and even an early form of internet. One reviewer was so taken by the ideas in the novel that they sought out the author - she and John Claudius Loudon married the following year.
