- POV test drive video of the 2014 Volkswagen XL1. The VW XL1 was produced in 2013/2014 as a limited edition of 250 units. The XL1 was designed to be able to travel 100 km on 1 litre of diesel. The XL1 is a plug-in diesel with a 0.8 Diesel engine and a 20 kW electric motor. The electric range is 50 km. The system output is 51 kW and it has 140 Nm. of max. torque. It’s rearwheel drive and it has a 7-speed DSG. Topspeed is 160 km/h and it goes from 0-100 km/h in 12,7 sec. The price of the car is 111.000 €. I got to use the car from the VW Contact Center.

POV testrit video met de 2014 VW XL1. The VW XL1 werd geproduceerd in 2013/2014 op een gelimiteerde oplage van 250 stuks. The XL1 werd ontwikkeld als 1-liter wagen, om maximaal 1 liter diesel per 100 km te verbruiken. The XL1 is een diesel plug-in hybride met een 0.8 dieselmotor en een 20 kW elektromotor. Het systeemvermogen is 51 kW en 140 Nm max. koppel. De XL1 is met achterwielaandrijving en heeft een DSG 7-trapsautomaat. Topsnelheid bedraagt 160 km/u en de XL1 gaat van 0-100 km/u in 12,7 sec. De prijs van de testwagen bedraagt 111.000 €. Ik heb de auto mogen lenen van het Volkswagen Contact Center. Normaal gezien kan je de XL1 daar ook in de showroom terugvinden.

I love how it's futuristic but still down to earth. I'd proudly drive this everyday. I was wondering are there any (pre)cautions necessary not to lose grip because of thin tires?
I do not know about back wheels, but if you compare shape with Nissan´s deltawind and understand explanation of it, you will see, that certain shapes does not need huge frost tires.

They make the best hybrid, the best practical ICE cars and the only production car that goes 300mph. Hybrids kinda suck though, they’d always be better as a full electric or full gas setup.

Much carbon fiber and probably fcking expensive to develop. And with the low amout that will probably be built and you have your 111k dollars ^^
even at 111k it was sold way underpriced. That price by far did not cover the development and manufacturing expenses of this limited series vehicle. Remember that only 250 of these were built. Source: VW tour guide at VW factory.

@@ignasb That's right! If VW wanted to cover the development cost of the XL1 only by selling 250 units, the price of each one would have to be 5 million dollars! - that is a fact. Fortunately however, VW never intended to recover the cost in this way. Instead, their plan was, of course, for the XL1 project to help them learn how to make their 'normal' mass-produced models more efficient, because if they can do that, they will sell many more cars and make much bigger profits. The XL1 was a research/development project for the whole company, it was never a project to see how many XL1's they could sell.
Because too few people care about having this much energy efficiency for them to be able to mass produce it, to make it a reasonable cost.
DIt is ongelooflijk Johan. Zeker die spiegels waren heel exclusief 5 jaar geleden. Voor een schappelijk prijs zou ik het zeker gekocht hebben. Onze Belgische nummerplaat past helemaal bij het plaatje.

Imagine this as an aluminium build at 75% of the specs and a third of the cost, but it will likely not happen because politicians are picking technology.

Nobody would be able to afford it, buying a $110,000+ car when making $150 a week would take over 14 years without spending a penny from a single paycheck to have enough just to buy it.
Only the very Rich can afford this car, but why should they, when fuel is not a problem for them and there Are plenty of exotic sportscars for the same price, with much more hp, sorry pal, i think it‘s Safe to say that you won‘t

Comparing both cars, is like comparing a De Vinci masterpiece with a christmas callender.

Some people don't get why this thing is so expensive. Besides beeing a technological masterpiece (unlike a tesla) there where only 200 units built! This thing is ultra rare and none of you will probably ever see one

It was a gimick of a car, and from VW's height of ego with TDI.
The same technology can be had in the BMW i3, BMW could probably build the same vehicle for less than half of the insulting €111000 price.
It was dangerous driving high speed on wet winding roads with such narrow low-grip tires this car has!

What's the fuel tank capacity?
1 Litre = XL1.
It can achieve 313 mpg (and go 22 mi on pure electricity), but it also has a 1 Litre tank. Hopefully That Helps.

The fuel tank is 10 litres.
When it can do over 300mpg, or use 1 Litre of fuel to travel 100kms, fuel tank capacity is a bit pointless.

It's a V2 TDI so it's normal.
My Polsky Fiat 126 has also a twin cylinder and weight 580kg, so I don't see the point of the $111,000 cost because the fiat is about $5,000.
Also it's sound better.
How many mpg from your Fiat? What emissions? It would be interesting to compare with XL1.

The Fiat 126 drinks about 5 to 6 l per 100 km, and I maintain that the sound was better on the Fiat haha
