- Is the CalDigit TS4 Thunderbolt 4 dock the best for M1 Mac, M1 Pro and M1 Max MacBook Pros? In this review of the CalDigit TS4 I want to help you make that buying decision for your next Thunderbolt 4 dock whether you have a M1 Mac Mini or MacBook Air, or the latest M1 Pro and M1 Max machines.
It has been challenging to find a Thunderbolt 4 dock that really works well with this Apple Silicon, but I think we might have found the solution here.

As you can imagine, there are so many more tests to perform. However, the fact that this dock is handling the workload of multiple displays, external SSDs, streaming, and being able to plug and unplug these peripherals without issue, no random wake problems or rather unable to wake from standby mode has been a refreshing experience. There's more work to be done here, but I feel confident that this dock is going to be a great fit for many of you.
Sending my best. 🤘
Nice video brother - I will look forward to Part 2 when you can get to it. :) Enjoy the boarding trip - I'll look for that video too haha!
Yeah, I really want to dive in more on that aspect. Will be upgrading the hardware. It’s always something, right?
That was awesome of Jerry!! And great video as ever Kevin, so many ports, love that!
This community is just awesome. But you already know that 😉
I was completely floored by his generosity. But more importantly, I feel as if I have another friend in the space.
Stoked all around.
Good seeing you, as always. 🤘
Stumbled upon your channel while researching the Mac Mini…. So glad I did… love your content and style… BEST I have seen… Thank-You
Hey! I appreciate that. Really glad to have you here and looking forward to seeing you around the community.
This type of channel is exactly what makes UA-cam such a special place. People really sharing their passion and making super high quality videos. Awesome work and thank you!
This, iPadOS 16 and good quality peripherals would really unleash the potential of an iPad Pro in some applications. I bought a used M1 to use as a project manager in the construction industry and it’s been great. But I still use the work pc because it’s better at multitasking In the office.
@3:50 also is that Banff? Hahah grew up in the Bow Valley and had never seen it form that angle.
Well I really appreciate you taking the time to hang out here with us. I do love making these videos.
Yeah, iPadOS 16 has been fun to experiment with and I’ll get back to testing more peripherals with it once we get a little more stability, but it’s promising.
It is Banff. Good eye. How did you like growing up in that area?
Wowwwww!!! There are so many ports on the dock! Crazy how it can run all those monitors! Glad to see this dock work well and that was an extremely detailed video Kevin! Awesome job!!! 😁
Yes, ports for days. And thank you my friend. Always glad to see you over here. 🤘
Probably a stupid question: but what ports do you use to connect multiple monitors since the CalDigit dock only has one displayport?
The Thunderbolt ports will drive the displays. If you don’t have a Thunderbolt or USB-C on your monitor then you can use a Thunderbolt to HDMI/DisplayPort cable.
great content as always! Looking forward to when you get a chance to fully test the things you couldn't do so that you mentioned. We have a few power users here that could benefit from a doc like this in the future. Thanks for the video and enjoy your trip!
Appreciate it! And yes, I do hope to dig in a little further on those additional tests.
Very comprehensive video! Looks like another interesting TB dock!
Thanks! Yes, definitely a welcomed addition to the TB4 dock line up. Good to see you again, friend. 🤘
@@KevinRossRN and you!
At the 10:50 mark you said, “I do think we have a winning combo for the majority of users out there” and you are 100% correct!
The winning combo is your delivery, generosity and your candidness in this video! Excellent breakdown and presentation! Keep up the great work sir! 👍🏾
I wish you nothing but the best! Thanks 🙏🏽 😊
Thanks, friend. Appreciate you being here. And I (of course) agree that this will serve most needs.
great video, thank you
I appreciate you being here.
once again you nail it!
Thank goodness. Because this one definitely was an exhausting effort.
Great to have you here. 🤘
Great video, thanks!
Many thanks to you as well.
This is the video that I was looking for thank youuuuu!!!!!
Well I’m glad to be of service. Happy you found the video.
@@KevinRossRN does this work with the new 2021 and 2022 m1's?
It is compatible, yes. 👍
Nice testing!
If only I had a testing lab and a team. Anyone who thinks this isn’t work I’d be happy to share what this actually took to make happen.
But that’s thanks to you of course. 😉
@@KevinRossRN lol yep! Especially testing videos where you need to try a lot of scenarios.
You got it. Might be time for more rumor videos 😏😁
Agree! These take an immense amount of effort 👏🏼 well played too gentlemen, great team effort!
Thank you 🙏
And thank you.
Hi Kev. This is Kevin in Toronto writing. It’s been quite a while since we communicated but just wanted to say hi. I’m still with you and your channel. I’m still loving my Mac Mini M1 and have been busy editing all my personal videos. You may remember that I was working on bringing my old Tascam reel to reel up to spec. I finished it a while ago and it runs fabulously. Only problem is all those half track reels I have need to be baked in order to play them. Haven’t gotten around to doing that yet. The tapes are over thirty years old. Many are finished masters from my studio days way back. Well, anyway, sorry this is not on topic, but just wanted to say hi. Hope all is well.
Wow! It has been a minute. And great to hear that you’re making some progress on those tapes. I do remember you sharing that endeavor.
I know the feeling. It can be an exciting project to pursue until you start getting deep into the nuance/details and then need a breather to step back and both appreciate what you’ve accomplished and assess where you still need to go.
Awesome to hear that the mini is still rocking and rolling. 🤘
Man, that thing seems like a must-have. I just wished it had cfexpress on it. I’ll likely get one anyway and just hook up a separate reader. At least all of it would be in one place. Good video!! 👍🏾
Thanks! And yes, CFExpress would be an awesome addition. Probably just came down to the niche market for that, but I definitely hear what you’re saying.
Love the video - thanks! Have you tried using a cable extender? I want to keep my MacBook on a shelf below my sit/stand desk and I’d like to keep the dock on my desk itself.
If you’re using a longer cable, I’d recommend an active TB cable over a passive one, however I did not personally test this.
By far the BEST dock out there… even the TS3 is awesome! Nothing comes close to the Caldigit dock, nothing!
They are great. Hands down a very well built piece of tech.
Ty 😀
Thank you. 🤘
Little over a week with my new setup that replaced my iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014). I now have a MacBook Air M1 chip with 8‑core CPU, 7‑core GPU, and 16‑core Neural Engine, 16GB unified memory, 2TB SSD storage, CalDigit TS4 Thunderbolt 4 Dock, and a LG Ultra HD 5K Ultra Slim 27MD5KA-B Monitor on a desk VESA arm. Only thing I have noticed via iStat Menus monitor program is that even with 16GB unified memory with the programs I normally leave open memory is still being swapped out to the SSD storage. This is the reason I purchased 2TB storage is that even with the read/write of swap memory the MacBook Air should last me a very long time.
So far love my CalDigit TS4 Thunderbolt 4 Dock. Host/Thunderbolt port on the back which is great. Hate docks with the Host port on the front as a cable is always in it. Does not leave a port for devices to be swapped in, and out. Then since the MacBook Air does not have built-in Ethernet port, and I always plug my Ethernet devices in hardwire if I can. Reliability, reliability, reliability.
Only issue I had is with the CalDigit TS4 Thunderbolt 4 Dock included 2x Rubber Feet Strips did not give enough airflow under the CalDigit TS4 Thunderbolt 4 Dock. Just with normal use of setup my new MacBook Air it was hot to the touch to the point I could not keep my hand on it. So went to Home Depot, and purchased 3/4 in. Clear Soft Rubber Plastic Like Self-Adhesive Square Bumpers. Installed them in the corners on what is now the bottom with the device on its side. Now warm to the touch however I can leave my hand on it.
Hey, if the rubber feet were the biggest issue(s) then I’d say that’s pretty good as far as needing a workaround.
And I agree that having that Ethernet available is really nice. It’s much faster than a USB-C Ethernet dongle that I’ve sometimes used.
And yeah, that swap memory will definitely fluctuate depending on the programs you’re using, but it’s so nice to have swap efficiency where you can’t even tell it’s happening because it’s just that good.
Great video - what plug in are you using for your titles that fly in from the left ? MotionVFX ? Or Pixel studio ? name? 🙏
Thanks! If I’m not mistaken I believe this set is MotionVFX tutorial. And I also use a slide across from PixelFilm Studio, and I’d need to look that specific one up. I love making videos, but they all start to run together. 😀
Nice sharing
Thanks! Glad to have you here.
Thanks for the video, it's super instructive!
I have a Mac Mini at home connected with a monitor (of course...), but I also have a Macbook M1 that I use for work and I would like to leverage the same monitor when I need to use the Macbook.
The question is: is it possible with this docking station to attach two computers to share the same monitor?
Thanks
Thanks!
Well the issue here is that there is only one source cable. So the one Thunderbolt 4 cable would be connected from the dock to the computer, so essentially it wouldn’t be possible, unfortunately 🤷♂️
And I don’t believe you can connect this through something like a KVM switch to access that functionality either.
Hey Kevin, I had the same issue with the dp to hdmi adapter. You need an “active” adapter versus a “passive” adapter. Once I had the active adapter it worked great. Cheers, Dave
Yeah, I have one of those on order. Appreciate you dropping by on this one. I feel like I have enough cables and adapters to start my own Radio Shack 💀
Also remember that HDMI is not as simple as they touted at its initial launch; different, pinning, versions etc. have made HDMI impossible to simply rely on, breaking their basic promise… so different hdmi cables will perform differently, which is the conclusive evidence of this broken promise
Yeah I try to avoid it when I can, honestly. It’s a port that’s more ubiquitous among peripherals, but if there’s another option, I’m going with that.
I have a question on connecting multiple displays - you can connect one through the DP on the dock. Where do I plug another display? Thx.
You can use the USB-C connection on the dock to connect via USB-C to HDMI or USB-C to USB-C (if you have the USB-C connection on your monitor).
Hey Kevin. What are the best nvme ssd's in 4tb and 8tb? 2TB is too small for most of our work but most of the speed tests on youtube seem to be on 2TB or less. Thanks for the videos bud.
I assume you’re looking to install these in an enclosure? Also, what would be the primary use?
@@KevinRossRN Hi Kevin. Yeah looking for an enclosure solution mainly for video editing. I have a San disk 4TB Extreme gen 2 but it’s only about 850 MB/s. Not bad but for canon 8k RAW and now C70 RAW I’m looking for something faster. The ability to upgrade later would be nice too, in case I do 4TB now and go to 8TB later. Thanks for getting back to me.
So having just uploaded a video on this, just keep in mind your NLE along with GPU being able to work through that footage in the timeline.
For transfers it’s going to be a time saver, but for working with the footage, you’ll still hit a ceiling depending on what you’re working on.
I still like the DIY offerings because of upgrades and I also use these NVMe’s in other builds.
Pete (someone from the community) did some testing with a few SSDs in different enclosures. docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1P7PGFCw4j2UUIKzEMyaCVbwE5zoVykbvFAuk37fzjN4/htmlview
I still rely on Samsung and WD primarily, but Samsung of course has some storage limitations such as the 980 PRO only going up to 2TBs.
But check out Pete’s google sheets here and see if this helps you with that start.
Had a heck of a time getting this hub to display 2 externals from my M2 max MBP 16in. ended up creating a second thunderbolt bridge to get it to work. How did you get it going?
I didn’t need this, but did you try the displaylink app?
I’m late to the game, but I finally had one delivered after waiting three months for B&H to stock them. It’s great…my unit concern is they it runs at 35 celsius at idle. Is that typical?
Congrats on the dock. And yes, that would be about right for idle. It’ll creep up there the more you have plugged into it. My Thunderbolt external SSD enclosures would cause some of that.
Can you use the TS4 to connect a Mac Mini and iPad Pro to the same monitor (not simultaneously, of course) by using two different Thunderbolt/USB-C connections of the dock?
Well the issue would be that whichever device you plug in first will be the one that the dock will push the display signal through. If that’s what you mean.
Wondering if dual display for non-usbc/thunderbolt monitors is supported? Do you know if I could do something like use 2x usb-c to displayport cable to run dual display? Thanks!
Are you referring to just M1 or do you have the Pro or Max chip? And are you just trying to take up two USB-C (Thunderbolt) ports on the dock and not using the provided DisplayPort connection on the dock?
@@KevinRossRN I currently have an M1 Pro chip, but will be getting a Max chip Macbook Pro soon. Ah sorry yes I would use the provided displayport connection, but I guess my question was for a second monitor, is a thunderbolt->displayport cable a workable solution? Or is there another recommendation for a second monitor since the monitors I am using do not have Thunderbolt/usbc connection. Thanks for getting back to me!
As long as you have the pro or max chip then you’re good. And yes, a usb-c to DP would be ideal. That’s the way I went with my testing.
Aren't we all just a little coocoo for cocoa puffs... I mean seriously..
Great review Kevin. My want for this was thinking more along the line of my nvme speeds while docked... But I'm thinking I should replace my fledging case.....
I think we might be 🐦
As far as the Fledging have you had any other issues with it otherwise? I am noticing that with these USB4 enclosures, even when they have TB3 components, that they seem to be performing faster in benchmarks, however it’s the real world use that I’m not really noticing a difference, but curious to get an update on how things are going on your end.
@@KevinRossRN no issues outside of metrics. It works just fine, runs smooth and delivers under load. It really is purely a numbers game, not real performance.
Gotcha. Just thought I’d check 😉
Well, we might be seeing some new releases in the coming month or so 🤫🤐
@@KevinRossRN yeah looking forward to comes out.
Me too 😮
Does the TS4 still have issues with the sleep wake function and random disconnects on Monterey. The TS3 is plagued with these issues
I wasn’t aware that this was an issue and I’d have to look into further, but I didn’t have any issues with sleep/wake or random disconnects.
FYI - I have one of these that I use with an M1 Mac Pro. I sometimes have issues where the ethernet doesn't re-connect after the laptop awakens from sleep mode. I'm not sure if this is an Apple issue, CalDigit issue, or my. network issue. Sometimes I didn't even notice this problem right away because the wifi would connect, so I'd have backup slower internet. Have you checked if your ethernet consistently re-connects after awakening from sleep? Thanks for the video.
It’s interesting that you bring this up. So in my initial week long test, I didn’t find this issue, however when going back for additional tests (after this video, and really just yesterday), I did discover this one issue with the M1 MBA, but I could not replicate it on the M1 Max.
I’m testing the mini right now though.
@@KevinRossRN I should have been more specific. I'm actually using the Pro Max on which I experienced the problem. Thanks for your reply.
Ah, gotcha…maybe all the comments were getting jumbled.
Anyway, I can replicate it on the MBA, not the mini, and I couldn’t replicate it on the Max either, and I also had other peripherals connected to it.
I do try and get these wake tests in over several days and to see if anything randomly disconnects.
I tell you, these Macs are a blast, but sometimes the “issues” we see on them can be frustrating.
what about issues with sleep/wake when attached to the dock with M1 MBP/Max?
Zero issues on my end, and I tested it with multiple monitors, SSDs, SD cards and thumb drives…they never randomly disconnected.
my samsung t7 ssd sometimes does not connect vis usbc? or apple superdrive any suggestions? also my thunderbolt audio interface does not work either? any suggestions? .
And you’re using this same TS4 dock?
I like this dock a lot. Yes, the 2.5 Gbit/s Ethernet might seem off compared to the 10 Gbit/s of the M1 mac Mini. But is it really a hurdle? To me: No!
Yeah, this dock is really promising. Checking a lot of boxes, and I tend to push these devices pretty hard in my testing, and I’m thankful it performs as well as it did.
@@KevinRossRN Yeah Kev, keep pushing those devices to their limits. Show them who's the boss.
Ha! Well, let’s see how far I can go. These things are definitely pushing my own limits. 💀
If I run my MacBook 16-inch M1 Max through this dock....and I connect a 144hz 4K monitor through the DisplayPort 1.4 on the dock...will I get the high refresh rate on the monitor driving it at full 4K?
You should be able to get that 144Hz refresh, and CalDigit lists this on their site.
How did you get the 3 external monitors to work? I just got the M1 macbook pro through work and I want to connect it to the 3 external monitors at my desk already. Will this dock and some combination of cables work to run all 3 at once?
The M1 will only support one external display, unfortunately. The M1 Pro and Max MacBook Pro will support more, but this is a limitation of the M1 MacBook Air or Pro. There’s a hack to get more displays, but it really is a workaround that isn’t straightforward and in my opinion, not reliable.
@@KevinRossRN Well i guess thats not great. Obviously with already having the monitors I'm fully committed to using all 3. Do you have steps, a video, or links on how to set up a work around?
DisplayLink Manager, which I have installed on one of my machines, but really just use it for testing:www.synaptics.com/products/displaylink-graphics/downloads/macos
Then, here’s an article (toward the bottom) that has some workarounds: www.macworld.com/article/675869/how-to-connect-two-or-more-external-displays-to-apple-silicon-m1-macs.html/amp
There was also a video that showed this. I’ll have to find that.
Cannot find this anywhere!
Where can one actually buy this one today Mid May 2022?
Thanks!
Caldigit is pretty active on Twitter. They’ve posted some updates as to approximate availability of inventory: www.caldigit.com/an-update-on-ts4-availability/
2:50 I think the problem here is that the laptop thinks it talks to a DisplayPort device (because the dock has DP) while the screen tries to communicate via HDMI protocols. That's why you can't just use two such adapters in a row. The same applies to, for example, to a USB->HDMI + HDMI->VGA combination.
Yeah that would be one issue, however I discovered (after the testing) that I needed a different cable. 🤷♂️
I am getting ready to setup my mac to 3 monitors. Will I be able to close my laptop, and stay connected to the monitors?
Yes, it’ll work in clamshell mode.
Sending my best.
For powering the MacBook Pro, would you recommend using its magsafe power port & 140 w power adapter and not rely on the TS4 charging capabilities? Thus, and please correct me, the Thunderbolt 4 host port would strictly be used for data transfer.
Well it’s not just using it for charging capabilities, but keep in mind that you’ll still need to connect that port to the computer because you need the data (information) to be passed through the computer via that data/power/computer port on the dock itself.
So using the MagSafe to power the MBP is not preferable, therefore replying on the TS4 to power the MBP through a thunderbolt IO?
@jacksonj3082 you can use the MagSafe connector while it’s docked, but the dock itself (because you have to plug into the MBP) will be charging the computer anyway. The “computer” connection on the dock is specifically for just the computer.
Thank you Sir
Got the TS4 for my MacBook Pro M-1 Max 16 inch - so happy with the purchase. I use a DP splitter to connect to my 2 Gigabyte M28 monitors saving a USB-C. Your review and kind feedback convinced me to get the TS4 - THANK YOU.
Is it possible to run two 1440p (16:9) 165hz monitors with the CalDigit TS4 on a Macbook Pro14" with M1 Pro chip?
I didn’t have time to show it, but I have two 2560 x 1440 displays. One with 240Hz and the other 144Hz and I was able to push those without issue.
@@KevinRossRN thx so much for your reply. I couldn’t find this information anywhere.😊
Sure thing. And I believe Jerry (the creator who loaned me this) did a video on multiple displays, which I think is on CalDigit’s channel. I might be wrong, but I think he did.
Will this work with the MacBook air m1? Can this run dual monitors with that ?
Only the one because the M1 can only drive one external display.
Kev, what's your expectation? New Mac Mini M1 Max and M1 Pro on March 8th, 2022, or later this year?
Well with the latest rumor that we might see the “Mac Studio” let’s just say I’ve got my finger on the buy button. I feel better about the M1 Max rumor than the M2 being in there. Just my take 🤷♂️
@@KevinRossRN That Mac Studio rumour makes me unsure about the release of a Mac Mini M1 Max and M1 Pro this year. Even though it was clearly stated that it is in addition to the new Mac Mini and Mac Pro.
Yeah, and I’m also concerned that we could be embarking into some really confusing territory here, especially with the M2 potentially entering the room, if that’s the case, although I think these Minis have been ready to go for awhile and they didn’t want to overlap into the MacBook Pro sales, but adding the M1 pro and Max would have been easy for them to do last fall.
@@KevinRossRN Yes confusing is the right word. Man I pray to any God and his/her dog that you are right about that the Minis have been ready to go for a while and they didn’t want to overlap into the MacBook Pro sales.
I feel pretty good about them already being ready. I think now it’s not so much about eating into the MBP sales because they’ve got that data to show these are still going to sell.
They now need to refresh that entry level line, and for those that want a desktop, but not the iMac.
And, if they’re going to release (possibly) a new display, then it makes even more sense.
However I’ve seen the statements that it’s ridiculous to pair a mini with a higher end display, but my counter statement is “why?”
Because of the massive price difference? Or can we just look at what the mini is capable of regardless of price because it’s really a powerful device as it is.
Unfortunately the display ports on both Caldigit hubs require an “active” cable or adapter. At this kind of price you’d think they’d include it.
I opted for the much cheaper TS 3 plus. I have heard the TS 4 gets screaming hot I’ll see if they ever improve that or have a lower price
Agreed. And that TS3 plus should (hopefully) still serve your needs quite well.
I’ll be interested to hear what you think of it when you have a little time with it.
I think that people like the TS 4 for the TB 4 ports but in truth for video editing you really don’t need anything that fast For transferring that does make a difference but to me I’m not willing to dole out more for the upgrade since many claim the TS 4 is running quite hot
Exactly. The editors are only running as fast as the CPU/GPU will allow, so I get it.
Any Problems with the external hard drives over heating when video editing/rendering?
No, and those tasks aren’t really pushing the drives that hard. Constant writing at a higher throughput will definitely push them harder, which is why I kept slamming them with file transfers over and over, but the editing was smooth because it’s only writing at maybe 150-300MBs tops.
@@KevinRossRN thanks for the reply,I have a 250 gig Mac mini that I'm going to use, I'm just trying to figure the best way for having storage and editing multiline 4k video etc.
I’ve definitely edited just about every video on an external drive without issue, whether directly connected to the Mac or through a dock.
Having a dock is really nice though. It just goes to show that there is a need for a bit more I/O on these devices.
@@KevinRossRN ever tried the Crucial X8 2TB Portable SSD? I have one and it's around 900mbps, I just worry about how stable it would be and over heating. Trying to decide if I should just go with a few of these or build a NAS with M.2 drives. Another worry is that I hear external devices get cut off when the computer goes to sleep and it causes problems with getting them working again.
I haven’t tried that one yet, but someone else mentioned it. Just remember that it’s not always reading and writing at those speeds. Only for short bursts when you’re really pushing it.
And you can always adapt your settings to not out the hard drives to sleep when the computer goes into standby. However I also test this frequently and so far I haven’t had an issue of it randomly disconnecting.
I did however have that issue of reconnecting through that Anker dock that I reviewed recently.
Just immediately sub after hearing a few words. I don't care. Your audio quality is too good.
Well I appreciate you taking the time to be here, and I’m thankful for the comment. Look forward to seeing you around the community here. 🤘
I have yet to get a DisplayPort monitor to work directly from my TS4’s DP port. I’m going to reach out to Caldigit to see if the issue is with my monitor or the dock.
Which monitor do you have?
@@KevinRossRN I have an older Samsung S24C450. I directly connect to my M1 MBP with a USB-C to DisplayPort cable and use the DisplayLink driver.
I think it’s worth reaching out if you can get it to work directly connected vs through the dock. I suppose you don’t have another display to test this theory?
I have no idea why they do not have a dual NMVE version with what appears to be a lot of space in this item. I keep searching and searching for a TB3 or TB4 with at least a single or better yet a dual NMVE capability plus the other connections as shown in this video. I am currently using Plugable TB4 hub and a dual drive (SATA and NMVE) hub that matches the M1 Mac but even it has lots of speed issues in my opinion. It would be nice to say "there can only be one" and it is true as it has a little bit of everything in one convenient package so we can declutter the workspace. Just my 2¢ (well more like 2.16¢ to account for Russian caused inflation
I’ve been talking to some other manufacturers and it’s really coming down to being able to allocate enough throughput for those NVMe slots to take advantage of the 40Gbps, and also heat.
I’m testing one now that has dual slots, but the NVMe is only at about 10-20Gbps and the other slot is SATA III at 6Gbps. 🤷♂️
So... I'm probably gonna shell out for this mostly because the single cable is so convenient, but this is also for work, so all the connectivity is helpful. But just curious- can anyone point to any cheaper alternatives that work to only plug in a single cable that provides power, and at minimum get a displayPort 1.4 connection + USB A (or even usb C really, I could use an adapter for that)?
Their previous Gen hub/dock is a bit cheaper. I don’t have one that checks all the boxes like this one, however OWC does make some as well. I just get a little concerned recommending something too cheap because you are connecting this to a pretty expensive piece of hardware.
So I have to spend $400 to make my M1 usable? I may as well buy a second mini.
Well if you need ports, especially a SD card reader, and you’re working with M1 (non pro or Max) then it’s definitely an investment that may need to occur.
But I agree, maybe just put that toward a another mini.
Weird question man, but where’s that shirt from 😂
Pretty cool, right. I got it kind of in the middle of nowhere on a road trip. Tamarisk Restaurant I believe it is.
On a M1 max MacBook Pro, an older HD connected via USB A ejects after the machine goes to sleep. Is this expected behavior? In two occasions, the MacBook completely closed out all programs and restarted after inactivity. Anyone experiencing similar issues? Thoughts??
Is this connected through the hub, and what do you have toggled on in settings when the Mac goes to sleep?
@@KevinRossRN Thank you for your response. The "put hard disks to sleep when possible" setting is checked off. And yes, they are the external drives are connected through the hub. I experienced this issue upon initial use, after a while it seemed to have corrected itself. Unfortunately I am seeing this problem again.
I haven’t checked to see if there’s a firmware update. Let me dig a little further into this.
⚙️ After days of researching, I finally found an external SSD that maintains a read/write speed of 2,800 mb/s for Mac Studio computers, and PC. It supports the Mac Studio USB 4 port rated at 40 gb/s. And supports Thunderbolt 4 & 3. Doesn’t get any better than that. Decent price too.
👉 2.0TB OWC Envoy Pro SX- 469USD. External SSD at Amazon and BH Photo Video, same price.
I’ll have to check that one out. Appreciate the suggestion. 🤘
Does it charge the laptop
It does indeed.
Its sooooo difficult looking at that mic cable. OMG!!!
It’s the little things.
I am so surprised there still is input dual + thunderbolt i thunderbolt dock.
Basically two individual docks in one in closure.
So this dock would basically be divided in two but in one case.
This could be switchable off when not needed or on would allow raided external SSD up to 7000 Gps.
It would take some serious complicated power management.
Just a thought.
This would put 80 total Gbs 40 GPS X 2, divided between the ports this way an external SSD, 3.5 Gps 10 Gps can go full speed and so can everything else, but allow monitor setup ssds etc all to work at top speed.
Yeah, I’ve looked into this. Right now it’s coming down to thermals and cost. I’ve looked into this from a engineering/manufacturing standpoint and as much as I’m with you on this one, it would be such a niche audience for the expense.
@@KevinRossRN thanks I have been wondering this since TB 1 and 2 days.
But mainly tb3 and for in regards to external GPUs, something apple used support
With less than 40 GPS bandwidth GPUs cannot give all of their performance, but with a dual TB port enclosure with proper software that band width effectively doubles making an egpu it much slower than a direct connected one, even faster than a pcie4 ssd slot connected one.
Assuming apple still supported egpus or an Intel Mac and PC with weak graphics would get almost full benefit of the GPU, especially as prices come back to earth.
Yep, I hear that. I was seriously so curious that I was looking to see if I could partner with someone and release a product like this.
Hopefully the demand would increase, therefore making it a viable endeavor.
But to your point we now have no compatibility with Apple Silicon and eGPUs, so that small market just shrank even more.
I’m certain we’ll see some evolution in this space though.
Per your link and Amazon, this unit is no longer available.
It recently launched over the last couple of months and they apparently sold out pretty quick, but stated that they should be releasing more this month.
@@KevinRossRN ok kool bc this is exactly what I need. Thank you!
You bet. Sending my best that you’re able to get your hands on one of these. I remember when CalDigit (and others) came out with some socks early last year and they had some initial issues with keeping these in stock, but I feel good about the brand that they’re working hard to get these into hands of their customers.
It should be good for £280 😁
Yeah, is that a sweet spot for you?
I’ll see what I can do 😉
SIR/ROSS\CHA! Im sporting the smaller thunderbolt 4 ,caldigit cables. My internet is 7mbs soooo. Anyway UPDATE! I thought my caldigit dock,my external hdd ,monitor or my 2019 intel Macbook Pro. Nope ! Talkin about my memmory leak editing in FCPX. YOU FIXED IT!!!! You know the story. When you told me to put all footage in a folder on external and create my project to rest in that folder imean id have to look at my notes but BOOM!! I have cut and processed over 20 TB of video flawlessly so far! THANK YOU SIROSSCHA!!🤌i think thats the sign for more.?
Ha! Well I’m really glad to hear that this worked out for you and that your memory leak has improved. Happy to help where I can.
I appreciate you circling back to let me know how things are going. Sending you my best.
On the failing HDMI adapter was it a "passive" or an "active" adapter? I've found on docks Dual Mode display port is not propagated though. See for more details en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DisplayPort#DisplayPort_dual-mode_(DP++).
Thanks for the info. It’s a passive cable with unidirectional communication from DP to HDMI, and I was hoping to get another solution to test, which I will once that comes in. I even tried to experiment on other monitors and with display link.
I do think it’s possible, but unfortunately the adapter may have been the issue on this one.
@@KevinRossRN I believe CalDigit does says that the adapter has to be active to work.
Yeah diving deeper into the specs this was later discovered, as well as some of their updates since originally being tested. Conveniently they make an active adapter, which I personally need to test.
