    One thing I've noticed a pattern of in this game is how the endings fit with a theme of justice. Neutral being the worst ending arguably for everyone (the player and Flowey included) because there is little sense of justice being able to go one way or the other. the "Pacifist" ending seems like it fully leans justice towards monsters while "Genocide" leans justice toward the 5 human souls. it makes sense that this ending seems like clovers justice of self and shows that while they are willing to help mosters, they will not willingly give their life to the monsters, and seeing the 5 souls trapped was a wake up call that clover traveled the underground for something they ultimately lost sight of somewhere along the way.

    • @FrancoisTremblay
      @FrancoisTremblay 6 місяців тому +165

      I think I understand now. I think seeking justice in this situation is ultimately impossible, because both the humans and the monsters committed grave injustices, and no matter what, many innocents have to die.

    • @natecgames4612
      @natecgames4612 6 місяців тому +62

      @FrancoisTremblay the problem with Justice is that injustice needs to be committed before, during, and after finding justice outside a court of law.

      I really like how they examined the concept of justice in this route. I feel like pacifist refers to it as "justice", while neutral goes with "judgement" and geno with "vengeance", all different aspects of the same base concept.

      I think it's different, actually. Flowey said in the neutral ending that he believes Yellow is "judgement" not "justice" I believe Geno is Clover fully embodying a self-righteous judgement, while with every spare it embodies judgement less. The pacifist ending still isn't "Justice" in my opinion, the unaliving oneself "sacrifice" feels too messed up to me, but it IS devoid of judgement. A concept of Judgement vs Justice, I think, is a big theme of this story.

    Something I noticed watching this through again: you don’t gain any LOVE when killing Ceroba in this route. I don’t think this was an oversight either. LOVE measures your capacity to hurt others. The more you kill, the easier it becomes to distance yourself. Clover didn’t gain any EXP or LOVE from Ceroba, because they didn’t want to hurt her. This wasn’t an act of senseless violence, or even an act of vengeance. Clover saw a lonely mother weep over losing everything she had left, and decided the best thing they could do was grant her final wish. This was an act of mercy.

      @@KwikBR Why'd you censor "suicidal"? Also, that statement is not justified. An act of mercy through assisted suicide, while it has its ethical conversations, is likely much more preferred by the individual that's requesting it; say for someone who is in severe, completely untreatable pain. Which isn't limited to physical pain.
      In Switzerland, you can get assisted suicide for those reasons. Putting someone out of their misery, as opposed to letting them live through their pain when given the option to help, is borderline evil.
      Now, this is a videogame, but the situation hasn't changed. Ceroba is in severe, untreatable pain. Has lived through tiring years to fulfill her husband's idea, and failed miserably. She puts it pretty well; saying she literally lost everything. Her family, her purpose. Just because you don't agree with killing her in that context, doesn't mean it isn't mercy. It's called a mercy kill.

While it's implied Asgore killed some of the previous humans they never say he killed all of them, and the True Pacifist ending even goes out of its way to show how Clover's equipment ended up in the dump. I feel that the decision between killing or not Ceroba resides completely on what you answer to her question about what's your purpose in the Underground. If you answer that it is the human children, then it is only logical for you to surpass an obstacle that us wife to a man that has killed a child and that has experimented on a human soul, for you to meet Asgore. Clover answering that in Steamworks reflects that he indeed remembers what his mission is, and the fact that he is befriending everyone is only due to him not having a just reason gor executing them. If you however don't answer to Ceroba, then it is shown that Clover has forgotten about his mission, and he is now just seeking love and will sacrifice himself for the justice of the monsterkind. In my case, I player two pacifist runs, in the first one I got put of every battle by acting, and spared Ceroba. In the second, I actually fought back against every monster, as it is legitimate self defense, and just spared their lifes whenever surrendered, as it is the just thing to do. In that run I fought Ceroba and killed her. And I felt that Clover pointing a gun against Asgore, meaning that he is also one to be judged for his actions and deserving punishment, was the best possible outcome to the character. I feel genocide just connects with that idea and it is supposed to be a run where Clover, having knowledge of his previous attempts (let's remember Flowey saying that he is solving puzzles faster), knows that he needs to be stronger to fight Asgore, and therefore, has no other way around than getting stronger, and sees his actions as nothing more than a mean to justice. He doesn't think that those actions are actually just in itself, that's the reason we can see that Genocide Clover is much more human than Genocide Frisk. He's able to apologize to Martlet before attacking her, what I think is canon, ad a way of saying "I don't want to do this, I didn't want to do that, but there's just no other way around" The fact that Clover actually looks down when starting a genocide, just reclects how he is not happy with his actions. I think it really is a reflection of Asgore, in genocide, Clover just turns into asgore himself in order to kill him. In pacifist flawed, he goes for true justice in every action, but that doesn't give him the strenght to deliver justice when it matters most. From a moral point if view. Genocide is justified from utilitaristic views. Whereas flawed pacifist is justified from an imperative moral standart. True pacifist, however, would be a strange turn where, still justified by imperativ ethics, Clover decides that the ones that deserve justice are monsters and not humans, or, it can also be seen as Clover abandoning completely the seek of justice, and just doing the best for the friends he has made, even though that is practically the opposite to what is implied in his "revelation". The creators clearly want to indicate that the true pacifist is the canon, but I don't see a problem at all with this one. The only thing off is the gun and the hat in the dump, but the same scene we see for true pacifist could be done by Martlet taking Clover's things after he dies against Asgore and doing the same thing, since Martlet still loves Clover.

    It really just doesnt rationally work. See, I dont think its the _right_ choice, but Martlets right: it _is_ just. Theres no saying she wasn't still a threat, theres no saying she wouldnt have just tried to kill you once more. Her threat was "neutralised" to you, but not to Kanako, and not at all over the next few minutes. Her masks broken, sure, but we know she can still be powerful regardless.

I get Starlo is grieving, but we're a kid who was forced to kill someone for the first time, and instead of comforting us, he basically kicks us while we're down.

    Finally got down to watch the last ending...
    I know that everyone already commented on it, but Star's last speech right after finishing Ceroba is so RAW and in your face, you knew that you could just spare her and forgive her, it was as simple as the click of a button, but that wouldn't be just... would it?
    Of course, Asgore acting strong on Clover when with Martlet, but being distressed when it's just the both of them on the last room. And also like... CLOVER AS WELL?! How he tried to be polite to Asgore when Martlet was around, just to let Martlet feel safe, and in the last room having enough of Asgore's shit because he ruined their mission since the beggining?! I feel for Clover in this ending... in a sort of regreful way, like Asgore.
    And also, last thing, how Ceroba said "Thank you" in such a relieving way, like she knows this was the best option to the situation, not trying to brag of as strong to Clover, being happy that she will get to see Chujin again, even though she knows she falied on her own mission. Heartbreaking, that's probably what almost every character felt in this ending, that's all I have to say.
    As I comment this I have already seen basically everything on the game, endings, secrets, all of it. Might be missing some specific dialogues, like sparing situations in No Mercy routes, etc.
    But I think that's all for me. Like I've said in other comments, I only experienced this myself one time, and that's how it will stay. If I ever feel like I miss this wonderful world, I'll pop a gameplay on YT here and there, or listen to the banging OST while I study. As my final grand goodbye to this, thank you to all of Team UTY for stayin strong for so many years to get to release this, you all should be IMMENSELY proud of yourselves! Chujin's work was constructing a serum that could allow any monster two be a boss monster so the underground would be stronger and not obliterated by humans. He tried with the blue soul but since it aint pure it didn't work. Ceroba uses his notes and tries refining it but again no dice, and also causes her daughter kanako two be fallen down. In genocide it's a bit unclear if marlet is using the serum but in that case she's just using it as a determination steroid boost (which causes her two amalgify at the end)

    Concerning which end is canon, I think both the pacifist and the flawed pacifist routes are the best candidates but to me, the flawed ending seems the more canon.
    In the pacifist route, Clover wants justice for the missing children before them. They're looking for the responsible all the way until they finally get sensitized by the Monsters history and the final fight with Ceroba. In a sense, Clover gave justice to the Monsters, accomplishing their destiny by giving their soul while their belongings will be found later on by Frisk in the waterfall.
    In the flawed pacifist route, it's the same thing but when fighting Ceroba, Clover claims justice for her actions and the horror she committed. While their morality can be questioned, it's part of Clover's character. Plus, the fact that Clover found Asgore to discover that he is the murderer of the children before them and confront him ties in perfectly with the events of Undertale. Especially since ultimately Clover is powerless against Asgore and joins the other souls. We can easily imagine that after that, Martlet gets to collect Clover's belongings to bring them to the falls as a final tribute.

I feel like the whole game is being hyped up to fight Asgore, and knowing that we lose was far more interesting to me than just letting Ceroba take our soul. In my head canon, this happens after sparing Ceroba and giving our hat and gun to Martlet and Star. Clover goes to Asgore by themselves and.. dentist visit ensues.

      the soul still ends up with asgore in the true pacifist ending so i mean. not objectively. it's up for interpretation so it's not absolutely canon, since it's never stated asgore killed all the humans just that he has all their souls. for example in this game integrity's soul is found in waterfall, and it's revealed in a tape and in genocide that axis killed them. they never made it to asgore.

      what? does this video not prove he was right? Martlet defends clover saying they had no other option, while the player (Shayy in this case) knew that there was a happier ending, they weren't forced to do it, they were only doing it for the sake of murder. they weren't doing it for a justified reason, this video proves Starlo is right.

    • @fred_krueger55

      @@KwikBR First of all, I think that there is no reason to kill Ceroba in the end, but Starlo didn't know how Ceroba was killed. (Maybe Clover killed her before Ceroba's will was broken, only Clover knows what happened).
      "What the hell did Ceroba do to deserve this!" - maybe you shouldn't kill someone as a punishment, but this Starlo's phrase is just a selfish emotional outburst.
      Yes, Ceroba "was lost", but it didn't justify an act of homicide.
      "She wasn't given a chanse" line also incorrect, because Starlo tried to stop her, but she didn't even listen.
      "All I know is that I... I lost my best friend tonight" - this is also a selfish outburst.
      "Why did I hesitate to fire that last bullet?" These are the most disturbing words, because he was going to kill someone to correct mistakes, that appears because of his reckless behavior.
      All his words are just emotions, they aren't logical. I understand that he lost his friend, but Starlo is crossing the line here.

      @KwikBR 4 місяці тому +1

      @@fred_krueger55 In undertale, the 'character' is you, you can't just look at it from Clovers perspective, it's a Meta game where saving is a real thing, that you remember. If you have spared first, (which most people do) you know that you could have a happier ending for everyone, you know that you don't need to kill for the sake of killing, and even if you didn't, it's pretty obvious that it would lead to a happier ending, and you can always go back and choose to save her after it goes wrong. whatever situation you are in, Starlo is right that this was the wrong option, and it's completely understandable to wish you had killed the person who killed your childhood friend, especially knowing you were just in the same situation as that friend, and that Clover had spared you, but not them.
