  • Cruising Authority Host, Barry Vaudrin tours the Queen Mary in Long Beach and points out some interesting features about this famous and legendary ship. Queen Mary is currently a hotel, museum and convention facility. It's worth a visit and it is particularly worth staying over night a few nights to fully absorb the rich history of this former trans-Atlantic ocean liner. Also visit cruising authority

I was a member of the ships company. In 1951 and return as boys we were the radar operators in bad visibility particularly when we were crossing from Cherbourg to Southampton.
The guy mentions the creaking, well in bad weather she would roll her guts out and the woodwork would literally shriek at you. The Queen Mary was a 'Happy ship' her Captain when I seved aboard her was "Harry Gatteridge" who docked the ship n New York during the Tug Boat strike.

Thanks Barry for the video, I worked aboard the Historic Lady from 1989-2019 (30 years), I've seen the deterioration of the ship over the years, so hopefully they can bring her up to par to be toured again.

HI BARRY thanks for showing us around the greatest ship! we need to save her from sinking or the junk yard I stayed on her 3 times it was fun but the last time in 2019 it was boring very high prices food tours not included with the room stay . Nothing going on you needed to walk around to do something. When they get her fixed up they need to have evening dancing a morning brunch great tours and more. I am very shocked those are not the true stacks I wish I did not know about that and the life boats. Thank you, Barry for the tour LA. CA.

Ian Burpee Yes, it would have been great to see the Olympic as a museum ship, however; in 1935 there were several groups of people that were trying to make Olympic into a floating hotel, but it was determined to simply be too costly, to operate as a static vessel.

+Barry Vaudrin Actually, you can get close. In the north of England in the beautiful town of Alnwick (pronounced Annick), there is a hotel, whose owner in the 30's bought the firt class lounge (panneling, lights, plasterwork, leaded lights, fireplace, the lot) and built a special extension to his hotel to make this into a dining room. I've eaten there and it is wonderful.

@VMAdventures of the 22 lifeboats onboard the ship, 17 of them are original. None of the them are fiberglass "copies", the ones that you saw aboard were from other Cunard liners. Those boats occupy stations #4, #7, #16, #19, and #23. At least three of them came from the Cunarder SYLVANIA in August 1967. Rumor has it that Disney planned to make fiberglass copies for all the boats, but that never came about.

Very interesting vid. I've been on the QM I don't know how many times and never knew about the lifeboats, or the funnels. All liners of the day tho' had docking wings, although I didn't know that the bulkheads (on the docking wings) were shaped to make the wind less of a problem.

baby.... I have stayed on the Queen Mary twice in the past 6 months.... both times on A deck... once on port side and once on starboard side.... for several days at a time.. if you are going to film this amazing piece of history, stay on the vessel.... for a prolonged peroid of time.. you would be surprised how how much more you will ACTUALLY learn... including those alleged ghost sightings and apparitions.. you can touch any bit of burlwood paneling aboard her and FEEL the history

Lusitania, Aquitania, Mauretania and almost all trans-Atlantic Cunard liner's had them. The Modern ones dont have them because they have Satalite Navigation to alert them of any obstructions, but back then it was all done by eye sight.

The reason the QM was brought by Long Beach was to have a “museum of the seas” which would be in the old machinery spaces. However issues with funding and other things left those areas empty. You can find more info here: www.sterling.rmplc.co.uk/history/hisindex.html
In the Long Beach years section.

According to John Maxtone-Graham, Queen Mary had no sister ship. Queen Elizabeth was a ship designed independently and differently from Queen Mary. Also, to correct 99hockeynhi, SS Normandie was not a "RMS" because there was/is no Royal Mail in France.

QE2 probably will never operate at sea again, high maintenance, fuel guzzler, doesn't meet many current solas requirements, she's not as efficient to operate as the new ships today are. As a hotel ship museum that would be great but she was not built for that and the few hotel ship out there today struggle to make a profit.

The original funnels were removed so they could dig out all the boilers and machinery in the bowels of the ship. The plan was to put the original funnels back, but when they were removed and set on the ground they collapsed due to the fact that they had rotted and rusted through and were nearly held together by the many layers of paint.

    Hi
I know that Queen Mary was used in making the 1972 Poseidon Adventure. Does the Queen Mary still have those vertical service shafts on board like the survivors climbed after the galley flooded? Also are they accessed through watertight doors and pipes? I have some 1930s deck plans of the QM but don't think they're detailed enough to show such pipes.
Also is the upside down stair case they climbed after leaving the burning galley where it actually is on the real ship?

    • @CruiseTalkShow
      @CruiseTalkShow  9 років тому

The Poseidon Adventure movie only used the image of Queen Mary's exterior and some deck shots, but the interiors were fictional, based on what an ocean liner might look like. Queen Mary certainly had stairs throughout the ship, many water tight doors and pipes, and dumb waiters. In crew areas there were exposed pipes, the same is true for cruise ships today.
