Disney's Forgotten Cruise Ship - The Queen Mary in Long Beach - Randomland!

- You all remember the time Disneyland was in cahoots with a decommissioned 1930s luxury cruise liner, right? No? Well welcome to Long Beach, California, home to the astounding, the magnificent, why most amazing Art Deco cruise liner who ever sailed, the Queen Mary!
The Queen Mary has a long, unusual, weird, and even haunted history, but perhaps the most interesting chapter of all is the connection to Disneyland, the Disneyland Hotel, and the "voyage to 1939!"
Join Justin Scarred as we set Sail for Randomland onboard the greatest luxury ship of all time, THE QUEEN MARY!
Our show switched channels years ago! Visit / justinscarred for NEW Adventures

My wife and I spent our honeymoon on board the Queen Mary back in 2007 and loved every minute of it. I am a maritime historian and just being able to see the great ship in all her glory was a great honor to me as I live in Pennsylvania and never thought I would be able to see that beautiful ship. When we explored the great ship I found gum stuck under the voice tubes on the bridge wing and found her to be in pretty poor shape overall and even though it was a great honor to be living my childhood dream of being aboard the Queen Mary, it was also disheartening to see that she had been in such a state of neglect. I just hope that the city of Long Beach and the state of California realizes what they have and what it means to people worldwide and does something to protect their investment. The Queen Mary means more to us ship lovers than they might understand. I appreciate your video and your view on the ship, your video helps many people that don't know much about the great liner.
The Disney Years were not good to the Queen Mary....but thank God she never sported mouse ears on her funnels.
Agreed
Yup
She was originally going to be the centerpiece of a themepark created by Disney. That park was going to be DisneySea it eventually was built in Toyko Japan and as a legacy to the Long Beach plan a copy of the Queen Mary was built in DisneySea. California Disney was the compromise after the Long Beach plan failed.
Yes the truth!
eaglerocks123 lol
"this 81 ton marvel"
Hmm....81 000 maybe?
ton means thousand he was making it shorter to say
Ehm no. This ship weighs 81 thousand tons. not just 81 tons.
Sailstone oh ok are you in the service
The displacement (weight)of Queen Mary is 81 960 tons, The Gross Register Tonnage is 81 237 GRT, it's the internal volume, not the weight (1 GRT = 100 cubic feet or 2,83 cubic meters)
I was.
I was just at Disneyland the other day and I have you know, I annoyed my family with every fact I could remember from your videos.
I always do that too!!
My family enjoys it cuz its like getting a tour hahaha :p
My brother and I did the exact same thing during the Disneyland trip we're on right now! 😜
I'm going this Tuesday!

I will have to visit this boat sometime!

Not boat ship
Cruise liner Boat? This is a ocean liner.
True :/
so let me get this straight. Disney once owned one of the most Haunted ships on earth? Thats Awesome!
+logan kerr Operated. The City of Long Beach has owned her since 1967.
No Logan, it was a Cunard liner during the whole of its working life. Ghosts are no more than a fanciful tale to give to the guillable tourists. The supposed ghosts and noises off, are the ship creaking which all old ships are prone to do.
+MrHeesbeen And that is your opinion.
I've been on the ship and I can tell the difference between a creek from old age and a ghostly knock.
Hey if it helped save the ship... Everyones claiming to be haunted these days it seems to protect historical buildings and try to bring in revenue.. It works well for some.
@@masonmethot3186 It’s called being a 90 year-old ship that’s falling apart,
They never should have scrapped the Olympic
Kef103 Nope, the Olympic was swapped with titanic because 2 weeks before launch they had to fix something and they didn't have time, even one person reported the keel of the ship was bent and the Olympics keel was bent.
you have clearly seen too many conspiracy documentary
GameHub // SFM // REACTIONS // GAMING// I have yet to see any reports from any of the surviving crew that said the keel was bent. I know that they made last minute changes to titanic's super structure, to correct for what the Olympic wasn't using. The upper level of the super structure on Olympic was more open, but they made it a bit more closed on the titanic because people on the Olympic weren't using the upper deck space. This made titanic's signature unevenly spaced Windows on the super structure, you know, the ones everyone tries to say the Olympic had. It's ridiculous to think that some people believe the two ships were switched as some "insurance" policy after the sinking, because the sinking of the titanic dealt a massive blow to the white star line. They didn't gain anything insurance wise from the sinking of the titanic. Switching the ships and, at least according to some, sink her on purpose for insurance money wouldn't have worked. It would have dealt a massive blow to the line, as the ship that everyone thought was new, just went down and took 1,500 souls with her.
Nikolai S the great that's because only one person saw it.
GameHub // SFM // REACTIONS // GAMING// mind giving me that person's name? Cause if it's just some ambiguous crew member with no name, odds are no one actually saw anything. And considering that a lot of people worked at the bottom of the ship, in things like cargo holds, boiler rooms and such, I find very hard to believe that one, ONE person ever noticed it. There would at least be a dozen concerned people making record of it.
"Filming Randomland, ever heard of it?"
Killed me.
The Queen Mary, she is a beautiful Ship, not a boat. : )
That's actually interesting. I've never heard the definition of the difference between "ships" and "boats". The former Premier Cruise Line had 3 ships named "The Big Red Boat".
+Ken Coker That sounds simple and clear but it doesn't specify the exact size. It means that a ship actually can have the same size as a boat. You can have a vessel, of the same size as a big life boat, that can carry it's own tender or life boat. Then it will be a ship, right?
+Ken Coker I looked up that site, lol, some of those comments are pretty funny. Well, I think I have to say: Case closed. Verdict: Everything isn't crystal clear.
randomly useless and incorrect facts.
So true!! didn't think of that while watching but so true!!
Can you go back for the ghost stories about the ship
I remember being on my godfathers 42 ft. yacht to greet the Queen Mary with all the hundreds of other vessels there were that day. What an awesome sight it was for just a little kid to see!
Cruise ship? Boat? This is an OCEAN LINER ! I'm tired of these landlubbers.
sealover the phrase is landLOVERS, not landlubbers. Been watching to much spongebob there.
+Nikolai S the great :))
oh can it its just a old ship that served many things
first i muted the sound so i wouldn't have to hear him next i stoped the video so i wouldn't have to see him what crap. would have liked to see the ship though,
I like this guy! He was offbeat, a little like Pee Wee (as someone else commented) but I liked it. He was crackin' me up, but at the same time I think he did a real good job of explaining some of the ship's history and very good at keeping the pace of the video going. Kudos to him. Now, as far as the ship goes, I was there, back in the day, when it first opened and it was a hotel only, not really a convention center yet. They had a few shops and I still have a souvenir ship I bought when I was there. We're talkin' 1973 here, people, so it was a long phuckin time ago! :) I'm glad it's still there, I hope it never goes away, and I hope that at least a few more people get to see it. It's a one of a kind thing Dudes and if you like the movie "Titanic" you should go visit this. It gives you an idea of what a true 'ocean liner' really was like.
Skipping through the video I see this guy's face taking up half the screen throughout the entire video.
This was really interesting! I love how the modern Disney Cruise Line ships pay homage to the classic ships from this era in their design, you can really see it in this video.

81 ton? Nope you're only off by a factor of 1000. She displaces 76,000 tons. That's like if you said your mom weighed 200 pounds, and it turned out she weighed 200,000 pounds - about the weight of the space shuttle.
Not surprising, really; the guy strikes me as being about as sharp as a grapefruit...
Thought I heard her wrong. Nice catch
It's no shocker, considering he dare call this ship a Disney cruise, when it's a proud Cunard liner.
GeorgeGraves is
It would be more like saying your mom weighs 0.2 lbs (he grossly understated the displacement of the ship; I grossly understated the weight of your mom).
I was on the Queen Mary around 1959 from England. I was 5 years old. Got away from my mother and fell asleep in an outdoor storage room. It was an all out search for me by the crew and passengers.
Very nice video Justin! This is my favorite of all the ones I've seen you do. Nice camera work and information.
There's multiple innacuracies in the "How the Queen Mary got her name" story in this video
1. it was not Cunard, at the time it would've been Cunard White Star
2. King Edward V died in 1483, which is way way WAY earlier than the Queen Mary. The monarch you are looking for is King George V who's wife was named Mary.
One note: you state that the Queen Mary is 81 tons. She is 81 thousnd tons. ;-)
Thanks for the riveting tour. The camera work was especially well thought out too. My family emigrated to this country aboard the Queen Mary in 1954, and it's still as impressive as I remember, though without the storm we passed through.

Great video!!!! I've lived my whole life here in Long Beach, CA & that ship is always awesome!
Haha, seriously I love how you upload these at odd hours. Great video.
LiveFastDiePoor Are you going to go on the ghost tours? :D I went on it when I was younger and it was super cool with it's creepy atmosphere and history. Can't wait to see your next video!
Ideally, the Queen Mary needs to sit in a dry dock ASAP to make sure she's still somewhat seaworthy. Apparently she hasn't seen a dry dock in decades and it falling apart.
They have been restoring her the last couple of years including removing particles and steel eating organisms on the hull. She is far from falling apart. If she was they wouldn't hold the Haunts under the water line
Tetragon 213 she needs to return home to the uk
She'd never survive being towed that long. According to a recent report, she'll sink in about 5-10 years unless serious action is taken to save her. Imo the damage is done though. I doubt she'd survive being towed to a drydock, leaving only mobile drydock coming to Long Beach as the solution.
I love Randomland!!! You are so great in these videos Justin! I learn so much and am entertained by your comedic timing that leaves me wishing these were longer. Awesome job!! You need to be an actor. Seriously you should think about it.
Great video, excellent work . You did very well the home work that was very well done. Thank you so much for sharing.
You left out the part where Disney was going to build a themed resort called Port Disney in Long Beach with the Queen Mary as one of the attractions
YASSSS!!!! He totally left out that connect to Disney intentions to this property/area. To bad the CA coastal commision dissaproved Disney plans to Long Beach...
+Philip Harris JR You were great on MGOB
RustyZebra Thanks :)
+Philip Harris JR Also the very idea that would morph into Tokyo Disney Sea.
1. The Queen Mary is a SHIP, NOT A BOAT. (To explain the difference in the simplest manner: you can put a boat on a ship, but not a ship on a boat.)
2. She is an ocean liner, NOT a cruise ship, that ugly floating box @4:09 is a cruise ship.
3. Disney never owned to the Queen Mary; they managed her for a period of time, but she has been owed by the City of Long Beach since 1967.
kagamigensou UK wants it back
@@louisnonyourbuissnes5191 well, the cant have it back!! They owned for 37 years. We've owned it 51!!!!

Amazing!!! Thank you so much for making this!
It’s hard to believe this was 8 years ago. The knowledge you can just spout off on the spot is crazy to me. Great video Justin
I'm a very happy subscriber! And like you, a HUGE Disney fan. Not only did I marry (once) a Mouseketeer (Jennifer McGill) but I also worked on the Queen Mary when I was a kid. 1989 just after Disney took her over.
Funny story, I was what was called the wharf ambassador. So when I took my cast member ID to Disneyland I was shocked to receive a VERY warm welcome with several executives and management meeting me. Turns out, a very important job at Disneyland was the Magic Kingdom Ambassador. Mind you I was just a kid though 6'4" and looking older than my age. Finally an executive asked me how I got to such an important position so soon. Finally it was figured out that it was just a coincidence in names. My position suddenly changed its name wharf concierge.
I truly enjoy your videos and nods to historic points (I'm a history buff like yourself). Keep up the great work!
King George not King Edward - Edward was his Dad :)
both wrong: Melvin not marvin
Great job justin it's just amazing. You should go back during Halloween XD
Recently learned my elderly neighbor, who is a WWII army vet from the battle of the Bulge and Rhine river crossing and Comar pocket battle, tells me he came home to NC from the war aboard the Queen Mary! Cool! I read where actress Dawn wells from Gilligan's island likes to visit the ship for the sea food served on board! ...maybe one day you'll be there when she visits! Please make more videos soon about and of the interior and exterior of the Queen Mary and of the submarine there beside her! Thanks again for your super work!
The RMS Queen Mary is not a cruise liner, she's an Ocean Liner there's a difference
Interesting information. Bit of an Adam The Woo copy, but still - interesting video. It irritates me when people call a ship like this one a 'Boat'. Thumbs up if you agree. Otherwise, nice video though.
Another great piece of work ! Keep it up, guys.
Very informative thank you for making this video :)
If I ever got the money, I would buy the queen Mary, have her refitted and refurbished, update the control systems, and then use it to make luxury ocean trips around the globe. I would not change the classic look though, that's gotta stay. Maybe I'd give her a new paint job, but the exterior design of the ship would not be changed.
Nice idea. I was thinking the same things about the SS United States. I also have feelings for the QE2. This one isn't that old but looks a lot better than modern cruise ships. She's a legend that have sailed a longer distance than any other ship in the World and could make some more nautical miles.
The QE2 is the real last liner
+The Slithering Swagger In my opinion the QE2 is the last beautiful liner. The QM2 is a real ocean liner but she looks too "fat".
Yeah
Good luck with that. I know a guy who has done some work on board and he said it is in complete shambles. They have big problems with raccoons and rodent infestations. Basically the ship is falling apart and because it's no longer seaworthy they're eventually going to have to deconstruct it right where it's sitting. I'm from Long Beach and I can't wait until that money pit is sold for scrap metal. It's been a boondoggle for the city for decades. Other than that I agree with you that it's very stylish and elegant in appearance.
My father rode the Queen Mary to WWII.
Jim Schuck ...As did my father. 👍🇺🇸
I enjoyed the video, history you provided. Been meaning to head down and check out the Queen Mary. Really enjoy your channel, looking forward to the spoooooopky part from this
Another great video. Thank you!
It's not a cruise ship it's a ocean liner!
Could you please be a little more hyper/dramatic/overzealous?
Not really, he's reached his limit : l
Thank you very much! Very interesting. I'd really love to visit this ship.
Yay! New RandomLands always make my day ☺️
It is a ship and ocean liner.
You guys did a nice job! But please do not ever call an Ocean liner a "boat". Queen Mary's GRTis 81 thousand tons. There is no such thing such as an 81 thousand ton boat. She is a a ship. Let's put this another way...You can fit a thousand boats inside of a ship.
You must be fun at parties
I've stayed on the Queen Mary in Long Beach , had a amazing time , couldn't quite believe I was actually on the ship
LiveFastLivePoor: Are you a big fan of decommissioned war ships from the 1930s?
Me: *MEEEEEE!!!!*
At the time the Hull 534 was under construction George V not Edward was King and he did not put up the money to complete the construction. David Kirkwood, the Clydeside Member of Parliament had much to do with getting the work started up again. Cunard and the White Star Line had to merge so that there would be funding for what became the Queen Mary. White Star gave up on building their 1,000 foot Oceanic. After King George died his son Edward was briefly the King of England but before his coronation he abdicated so that he could marry Wallis Simpson and they became the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. Wallis was never allowed to use "H.R.H." (Her Royal Highness) as she was never officially acknowledged as royalty though should have been. Edward's brother George became King George VI, the father of Elizabeth who is at this time Queen of England.
Thank`s Andrew - somebody should tell the Americans that made up stories don`t become facts the more times that they are repeated.
+MrHeesbeen Happy to oblige! I'm an American myself but very interested in ocean liners AND British history! Something I learned only recently is that the American P.A.S. Franklin who was one of the people in leadership in the International Mercantile Marine in the 1930's tried to prevent or stop the building of the Queen Mary. That would have been disastrous: I've read that the building of the Queen Mary may have been what pulled England out of the Depression and then there was her value, along with the Queen Elizabeth, as troop transports. (Churchill said the two Queens shortened World War II by a year!) Franklin also, unfortunately, succeeded in getting the American liner Leviathan sent to the scrapyard in Scotland when that liner should have been put in the Reserve Fleet for the war that was so soon to break out. I just finished reading a six-volume series about the Leviathan and the story is so involved and there were so many changes of ownership for the ship that I got lost in the details. It was a very tangled situation to have British ships that were American-owned and there was also conflict of interest between companies and nationalities. The Leviathan was scrapped when she should be have been kept but thankfully the Queen Mary was built and finished and became possibly the most successful ocean liner ever to sail. She was the only superliner (if you don't count the significantly smaller Nieuw Amsterdam which was big but not like the Queen) that made money during the Depression and she even eventually paid for herself more than once during her sailing days. "Bravo!" to those who brought the Queen Mary into existence and to her officers and crew in peace and war.
Only one big problem with this story, the British Cunard company owned it not Disney
exactly.
You obvoiusly didn't watch the video.
I didn't need to, i already knew who owned it.
+Stephen Hunter Cunard owned 1936 to 1967. City of Long Beach owned 1967 to present. Hyatt, Diners, Wrather, Disney, RMS foundation, Evolution have all been lease holders and hotel / restaurant / shops/ convention operators, but not owners of the Queen Mary. The ship remains property of the City of Long Beach.
Why are we disagreeing over Disney not owning it?
I love your videos! You do an awesome job.
I think this is my favorite Randomland episode thus far. I haven't been to the Queen Mary since I was a teen with my family and I didn't get half of that information on the tour. Great job!
I didn't know Disney world and Disneyland Disney company class starts in queen Mary ship name jackie scary Mary part of doing Disney plus movie with her attention
She's a ocean liner bud
It's a SHIP not a boat, too loud man....too loud!
Actually this is an ocean liner, to even call her a "cruise ship" is humiliating.
Technically both, in reference to the individual vessel ( the RMS Queen Mary in this case) it is both a ship and an ocean liner.
+sparkplug1018 Officially the QM is a passenger ship but definitely not a CRUISE ship. She was built for Transatlantic crossings and never did cruises.
sealover Sorry my comment wasn't clear, i meant She's both a ship and ocean liner.
Point taken, also she is a sad reminder of how this country could once build world class ocean liners, before the bastards at the top decided to shut down most of our ship building, now we have the worlds best ocean liner (Qm2) built in France FFS !!
Thanks for doing a video on this I love old ships
This is a great fact packed fast paced comically laced video about a one of a kind place that can be seen from outer space,....this stuff is right up my alley,.....now I know why Adam The Woo suggested this channel. Cool smooth neatly packaged production guys...Thanks
Hey, didn't this guy used to be Eddie Munster?
Liche Christ no he used to be a child molesta
The Queen Mary was named after Queen Mary however it was not Edward the 5th it was George V father to George VI who intern is the father of Queen Elizabeth II before making a program that we find out the historical facts first otherwise it makes the whole program look a bit stupid
Well, he also kept calling her a boat.
According the U.S. Naval Institute, a boat, generally speaking, is small
enough to be carried aboard a larger vessel, and a vessel large enough
to carry a smaller one is a ship. “You can put a boat on a ship, but you can’t put a
ship on a boat.”
Another factor the Naval Institute considers is the vessel’s crew,
command, and use. If it has a permanent crew with a commanding officer,
it’s usually a ship. If it’s only crewed when actually in use and has no
official CO, then you’re probably dealing with a boat
+David H Hah, well I know some swabbies that would beg to differ with you on that, they keep calling their aircraft carriers, boats, lol.
You are really good at what your doing. And I never leave a comment on any of these, except for one other. But honestly your energy is great.
Great history and well researched your schtick just kills it after awhile
SHIP! OCEAN LINER! NOT BOAT OR CRUISE LINER ARE YOU KIDDING ME
+BaCkOuTaNdJoIn
Technically, the Queen Mary was a North Atlantic liner, not a cruise ship. Different types of ships for different functions, though some (like the QM2 and her predecessor QE2) are designed to do both jobs.
***** The Queen Mary was an ocean liner. The QM2 and QE2 are not considered ocean liners per se, but are not considered cruise ships either. They have a different designation, MV, as opposed to RMS which was used for Great Britain's ocean liners
+BaCkOuTaNdJoIn RMS stood for Royal Mail Ship, the used for seagoing vessels that carry mail under contract to the British Royal Mail. MV is a boat or ship that transports cargo or people for hire.
desertfox1988GTA I'm fully aware of what it stands for... MV is Motor Vessel and refers to ships that use azipods for propulsion. I know my stuff, which is why it upsets me to see people calling the QM a boat or a cruise liner...
BaCkOuTaNdJoIn I couldn't agree more with you.
Dude Queen Mary was owned by Cunard not Disney. Also it was also Ocean Liner in 1936 not a cruise ship, There is a difference you know. You need to do more researching before you say this stuff in the video and get negative feedback
I agree.
Did you even watch the video before commenting!! He never claimed that Disney owned her as an ocean liner. He pointed out that the Disney company got the lease at one time while she was retired - just like the current owners do!
Then why did he put in the title of the video "Disney's Forgotten Cruise Ship" instead of "Cunard's Art Deco Liner" if he knew what Queen Mary was.
@@BadWebDiver you had a point XD your right queen mary is no longer a Cunard ship after being owned by somebody shes already a free ship disney or idk own her its ok shes now a free ship shes free from Cunard

This was super interesting! Thanks and good job
Mike Karschti I agree........
The screaming hyperactive woman presenter has a lot of face stubble. Gave up on finding out what the Soviet looking submarine next to it was. Checked the web. It is a Foxtrot similar to the one in North Korea the fat kid was riding around in recently. Historically the submarine is even more important the then the far more beautiful Queen Mary. Important enough you may want to mention it even if it's not the main event here
dirkbonesteel I'm from Long Beach it's a diesel sub called the scorpion given as a gift from the Soviet Union
Ironically when I was in Navy, served on Skipjack nuclear attack sub sister ship of our Scorpion. Scorpion was 1 of 2 nuc. subs we have lost. Also the only Soviet sub we chased at the time (long ago) was a Foxtrot class same as this one
+dirkbonesteel Yep we have left two nuclear reactors on the ocean floor.
Can you be my history teacher?
I wont sleep in my class anymore if he was my teacher
he'd be my favorite if we was my teacher
I hate history but this is interesting, I wish he was my history teacher!
oh its just because all my teachers sucked and i kinda developed a hate for history. it comes when you fail every test.

Another great unknown fact now known !
Thanks
Woulda been sweet if there was a hidden Mickey somewhere on the ship

Awesome job as always Justin :)
it looks like titanic
No its not. white star line made titanic. cunard line made queen mary. both were rivals, so they tried to out do each other.
What lu saelee said... Also Titanic was built by Harlond n Wolf in Ireland.
Queen Mary was built by John Brown & Company in the UK.
+lu saelee They were rivals, but buy the time the QM was built they had merged into one company.
Titanic had four smokestacks while the Queen Mary has three.
Nice video! But you act so silly when you talk and move a round, its not worth watching.
So rad you finally did an episode at the Queen Mary. 👍🚢 you should come back around Halloween and do some ghost hunting ! 👻
I don't know why I like watching these videos lol.
Keep doing what your doing Justin. History is really intresting.
You like talking! That's not what the title implies. Why not show us round it instead of sticking your face in the lens. I am British and have never been on the Queen Mary. I expected a tour, instead I got you! PLEASE, make another visit and let us see the ship. PLEASE! Thanks
jhiv3945 no, please don't ask him to make another visit, he's the most irritating idiot I've ever listened to. Turned the sound off and tried to watch, but all I get is his bloody face, gave up.
There are other tours of her on you tube conducted by people who know something about ships and are not driven by their own ego!
If the guy could have knocked off the feeble attempts at "humour", and taken the camera off his stupid obnoxious face long enough to do some research, he should have known that the ship weight 81 THOUSAND tons, not 81 tons....
Hey Paul, your observations are dead-nuts on. I fully agree. I stopped watching after two and a half minutes. We should remember though... he wants to be a STAR.
Judging by the quality of 'stars' lately...
cool ship. great job. thanks

Thanks for the history lesson. I checked it out when I was down there, but I learned more from you than when I was there!
Fascinating! Great job Justin😄 and good morning lol
omg dude shut up and actually read more history.. the Q-Mary was blt at first BY the british for the british and the US has Nothing to do with it.. secondly she was built to be a luxury liner then war broke out then was commisioned as a personal carrier/medical boat. After her service she was decommisioned and became a luxury liner again for another 30 some odd yrs before being retired by the british. after that she sat in dry dock rotten before england decieded to sell her off to the US and thats where she's been since and what did we do? turned it into a damned Tourist trap. ONly GOod thing about the Q-Mary now is she is the largest and Oldest HAunted Liner still in existance.
+Redcorvin I thought Cunard sold the ship.
Redcorvin UK wants it back
i love how your videos are kid friendly good work dude
