@@AK-qo6txhe looked fine in GB last year. Goffs problems were obviously with how he was being used that last season in LA, exactly as the poster stated.
Considering McVay successfully modified his vision of the wide zone from the departure of key guys who use to run it (heavily ran through Gurley) and needing 2 TEs to help with the run game (Everett the guy who left) to relying on his number 2 who became arguably one of top 5 WRs as a big slot receiver who can also block and needing a deep throwing QB to find him in Stafford, I think you are quite wrong in your assessment. The Super Bowl was icing on the cake but what would Lions fans know about succeeding at that level? Fuck at this point they are just happy to see their team get their backs blown in January.

I also went to the Lambeau game last game of last year and going to the KC game, first game of this year. I’m excited for it and should be a Awesome Year to be a Lions Fan!!! GO LIONS!!!
By Week 6-7 of last season they weren't the only teams who were turning heads with their dynamic run first approach. Giants were doing it making Saquon and Daniel Jones get big explosive runs. The Bears when they got Fields going was getting more points using him in designed runs than they had trying to be patient with him as a pocket QB. The Falcons had various looks playing heavy using Mariotta and their gang of RBs to gash up defenses playing light boxes against them and using play action to punish them more. And the Falcons O-line also got better. I wanted to throw the Eagles but they are a complete team at this point despite still being an efficient run heavy team because of what Hurts offers as a runner.
That Gibbs pick at 18 makes alot more sense now. Some of these runs, with wide opeeeen run lanes, would be homers with an athletic freak in the backfield. If Jamaal Williams could produce 30 tds, Gibbs betta have 45 in the scheme.
Gibbs was drafted at the 12 th pick. We got Jack Campbell at pik 18. Yeah Gibbs is electric ⚡️ he is the lightning to D~Monts Thunder. 2023 is going to be a fun year for us Lions cat’s.
That's what makes this game so great. We all talk, debate and argue but they (players) have to play the game and the coaches have to coach. I did enjoy the episode.
Thanks for the good looks at what the Lions do. Your editorializing regarding the Lions QB with shots like "limitations" and 'lack of arm strength" and "being under center to mask his deficiencies" really make no sense and takes away from the segment. If you look back when Goff was with the Rams (2017-2020) being under center to optimize run/pass options, bunch-formations, check-downs, deep crossing patterns and out routes were the same staples that the Rams employed. Goff is a partner now in the offense rather than a student. In 6 seasons he has QB'd 3 Top 5 offenses. I don't think any other QB in the NFL gets dissed for pure bunk more than Goff. Goff also has QB'd 3 offenses in 6 years that have passed for more than 4,000 yards while gaining on the ground more than 2,000 yards. The Lions in their franchise history finally achieved that feat this past season. That is top shelf.
I agree @johnthrasher8146. This is what happens when people who don't watch the games make a video. They just repeat mainstream talking points regardless of how accurate they actually are. Goff has a cannon of an arm. There are several factors as to why he doesn't show it off as much. For starters, DJ Chark was unable to gain separation. Secondly, why risk a TO when Amon Ra and Swift were running free underneath. Unlike foolish gunslingers in Detroit's recent history, Goff is playing a very calm, cool, collected game of chess.
@@BLITZSPEIGSright. People saw him under throw Jamo (a receiver he didn’t have chemistry with yet) in the Jets game and just assumed he couldn’t throw a deep ball. Then he throws an absolute dot 50yds down the field across his body to Raymond on prime time and people just forgot about it.
They'll be looking deep plenty after week 6. Jamo might be the fastest guy in the league. There's a narrative that Goff can't throw deep but he hit Chark enough, when he was healthy.
I never understood the talk about Goffs “limited arm strength”. He has a great arm, just not a Herbert/Allen/Mahomes Arm. He can make every throw in the book if he decides to pull the trigger
Will be interesting to see how Ben Johnson attacks teams this year. You know he’s hitting them with some hard counters. Can’t wait for this season! One Pride!!
Crazy that last year was his 1st season calling plays. Dude has a great feel for what the defense is doing and like u said countering it. Why I don't expect "the tape" on him to slow him down 1 bit. They're gonna be a top 3 offense
Im excited for this team to succeed next year. Hopefully their defense improves with all the changes next year. But they have a roster full of rookies.
I think the D-Line will come close to doubling their sack totals, just because of the presence of the new and improved secondary. And all it has to do is reduce opponents average scores by less than 10 points per game. If that had happened in 2022, at a minimum they would have won the division, and had a home playoff game. Ford Field in a playoff atmosphere…Whoa 😲
There’s really not that many rookies, at least not at starting positions. They’re still a very young team, but they have some veteran presences in key areas, while only having I think 2-3 guys at 30 or older, who are likely to be rotational players, but that’s how they built the team anyway. They plan to attack in waves, finding an opponent’s weakness and attacking it
Love the video, but to say Goff is on the decline is just inaccurate. Is he an ELITE QB? No. But he makes the right decisions and creates plays. His attention to detail down the stretch and this off season will provide him with the best season of his career this season. LETS GO
The best part about this offense is the humble confidence Goff and Ben Johnson carry themselves in. Despite all of the noise and hate Goff had received through the season, he kept his head down and worked. He’s not loud and all over social media, and you can tell his offense respects him tremendously. This breakdown was a perfect example of Goffs game knowledge and confidence to make snap decisions. Ben Johnson understands that ability and clearly stated he’s staying another year primarily due to Goff. They’re gonna cook this year.
Great breakdown…Can’t wait until we have Jamo taking the top off and Gibbs, Laporta and St. Brown as underneath check downs!! #DefensiveNightMare 😲🫣 #GoLions
I can't wait to see them in split gun. Seeing that both backs can catch it well with jamo taking the top off they should gash teams out of that formation. Both the pass and run should be devastating out of the split gun
This is a really good explanation on what they do! Really well done. As far as Goff goes, I'm glad he can now read defenses and is fully comfortable in this offense
You know where my fandom lies but this was a great video as I respect what the Lions did last season (and the only team to give me a tryout in 2010). I am surprised that defenses didn't go light boxes and play 2 sink, cover 6 and 4 more vs them. I'll take my chances with him eating on the ground and our D eventually making a play or 2 and forcing them to play in a negative game script. One wrinkle I like is playing my safeties shallow for run support with my DBs deep. I'm giving up the edges to protect deep, middle and run. Mix in sink and it all looks the same. That play where he read the corner on the speed turn was impressive but that safety has to get off the hash with 2 breaking out. Once they loses the threat of the run I got them.
Respect your opinion, but that O line will make stopping the run very difficult with some juice in the backfield. You definitely know more about football than me though, I just wanted to enter into some positive football dialogue with someone who understands the game.
@@DudeistPriest906 I agree, you gotta have dogs up front that can play a gap and a half. That Oline is an issue but you might find a weak links through out the game and coaching/play calling will save you against some of it. Play action is called in the huddle based off looks you see throughout the game. Versus the run (think Rock paper scissors, you have what can win vs paper but it'll against rock so you have to know when to call what) The thing would be not to get stuck on a play that worked (shooting both safeties on run reads or starting 2 high pre and post snap). After it worked bring one down pre snap, then play it late. You'll give up some gains in the ground but you might/will caught some breaks when they in the wrong play call for the coverage and you can get a sack or pick. The point is to hold on long enough to limit them to field goals (play action not gonna kill you in the redzone so stop the run and trust your DBs to win in small spaces) and your offense to get you a lead. Once the run game is out the window I like my chances. Lions will be a problem cause they are built right but that can be had with a great Dline and coaching.
@@AlexRollinsNFL 2 sink is a variant of cover 2. It plays like cover 4 and changes to cover 2 based off the number 2 WR. It gives DBs the ability to jump out breaking hot routes while giving the look that the boundary is open and providing the defense with an answer to multiple verts to stress the safeties. Real gem is your Middle back isn't forced to scream back to protect deep middle and allow them to read and react on short in breaking routes. You can show a middle field closed look if the boundary corner only has one to his side as he would basically lock that wr unless he motions to a reduce (cut) split. Weak against inside zone but capable run defense vs outside zone as your corners become force players. Instinctual quick and fast players will thrive in this defense ( ie Asante Samuels)
5:41 wow. Thanks brother at this point there was 2 players wide open. I never noticed that before. Ben Johnson manipulates the Defense to get his office wide open. It’s a work of art.
Brees Brady and Manning definitely didnt have Stafford's arm strength and all of them were slow as hell. However, when you know you're not there to run or force balls into impossibly small windows you focus on strategy, timing, getting on page with your WR's, reading defenses... etc... in the end these abilities are way more valuable than breaking Calvin Johnsons fingers on a dart over the middle, or dancing around in a circle for 10 seconds putting strain on your OL and wear on your body... bc its a lot easier to throw a football if you didnt just get railroaded by a 280 pound behemoth the play before
Trying to up my football IQ this year to better appreciate the game I've watched my whole life. Just found your channel. Great content man can't wait to watch more.
That and hes in his prime now. People expect too much from 23/24 year old QBs. They do better now than back in the day but the prime years still start around 27/28. I think Goff is going to tear it up next year.
Really good analysis, pointing out how Lions went counter to the trend of lighter faster defenses in order to succeed with Goff. It's also good to see Goff doing well in an offense designed for his strengths. The problem is that after a season of tape, defenses will know how to counter what the Lions did last season, and the Lions may need to go back to a more conventional offense, which plays into the strength of defenses again, and may not be as productive. But either way, it gives defenses more looks to defend, which makes their job harder and may still be a minor advantage for the Lions.
That season of tape ain't gonna slow Ben Johnson down. The dude just gets it, his feel for what the defense is doing is top notch. Plus their 2 new backs are going to make the run game that much better. He'll have them top 3 in the league this year. Number 1 from week 7 on.
@@joshlewis575 I like your optimism, but having a year of tape on the offense will help the rest of the league defend it better. That's how it usually works. Agree the OC did well, and Goff too.
Thanks LE, good to hear from you again brother. Yeah, I'm not as high on them as others, but they're talented enough that they can get it done, just not on my dollar
Goff's doesn't have a weak arm! Detroit only had 3 speed receivers last year. Chark who only played 9 games, JAMO who didn't start playing until after Thanksgiving and Raymond an excellent special teamer but not a starter.
Once you get all the complications of football, it' actually can be a very simple game. Throw it to where they're not. 2 safeties deep? throw it underneath. Everybody bunched inside? Throw it outside
@@AlexRollinsNFL Agreed, but I was referring to Goff's arm strength. He can easily throw the ball 60-70 yardage in the air. However, your comment is exactly how the Lions offense is built, take what's open. There's no need to unnecessarily go deep all the time, when you can move the chains and burn clock. This is why they had a top 5 offense last year.
Ohhh that makes sense. Because everyone's bunched together, a person catching the check down has room to run on the outside.. Well damn.. That's smart.
The biggest example of this was the only offensive touchdown vs NYJ Brock caught a 3 yard pass. Then ran for 45+ yards because of how out of place the defensive back field was
I always felt goff’s weakness was throwing on the run, or making a play if the original play breaks down. He has plenty of arm strength and touch IMO. Otherwise he wouldn’t throw that hole shot. That takes arm strength and confidence.
Basically this entire video starts on the basis that the Lions establish the run dominantly first. And people say rushing the football doesn’t matter anymore😂.
For such a "limited" QB, Goff sure does a whole lot with unknown talent. Its funny that Goff is this "dink and dunk" passer but at the same time he had to 2nd most completions over 20 yards, 3rd most over 40 yards and 3rd most over 50 yards. I hate when people make videos without actually knowing the information.
I don't understand the hate for the dude. Is he Allen or Mahomes, of course not. But he will always be in the upper half of QBs. I think he's gonna be in the MVP race at the end of this year
If anything the lions are the ones limiting him. Recievers outside of st brown (who Goff made better) is nothing compared to the so called "better qbs".
You have to watch the games from a neutral standpoint to understand how limited of a QB he is. It’s easy to make a judgement based off stats. Yes he lead the league in many of these deep ball stats but they were a result of the other team reacting to play action as a result of constantly being gashed by the run game.

I think a lot of great players are not giving a chance an football career because of this boring, lazy dogma style of spread passing especially at RB, FB & TE.
Both offense and defense have the benefit of standing on the shoulders of giants, it's up to each player, cordinator, coach, and owner to step up and learn.
Great video and break down! I do have a question though! What do you mean by arm strength of Goff? Meaning deep ball or throwing power? The only reason I ask is because I do believe he's fairly accurate on the long balls. It's his throwing power that needs work for sure.

I’m not ready to lose Ben Johnson and the season hasn’t even started yet😭😭🦁🦁
Lol y’all don’t need to worry about losing Ben Johnson
He takes his cues from DC
I truly believe we beat the Cheifs game 1 this year and put the rest of the league on notice.
... too* many playmakers.
That Gibbs pick at 18 makes alot more sense now. Some of these runs, with wide opeeeen run lanes, would be homers with an athletic freak in the backfield. If Jamaal Williams could produce 30 tds, Gibbs betta have 45 in the scheme.
Williams has 30 rushing TD's for his career, 4 years of which were in GB. He had 17 last year. He's had 8 receiving TD's, none in DET.
Williams got his tds in goal line situations, not many were from home run plays, if any
Gibbs was drafted at the 12 th pick. We got Jack Campbell at pik 18. Yeah Gibbs is electric ⚡️ he is the lightning to D~Monts Thunder. 2023 is going to be a fun year for us Lions cat’s.
Come on Brent. With all the nonsense you vomit in these comment sections, you shouldn’t be correcting anybody.

Ma boy, don't give away our playbook lol
Thanks my guy! Hell yeah dude, glad you likem
I find your Goff hate troubling.
All facts
Powerful running game and distributing the ball through the pass to several options and not looking deep often ... sounds like the 49ers offense too.
They'll be looking deep plenty after week 6. Jamo might be the fastest guy in the league. There's a narrative that Goff can't throw deep but he hit Chark enough, when he was healthy.
Slow yo roll
I never understood the talk about Goffs “limited arm strength”. He has a great arm, just not a Herbert/Allen/Mahomes Arm. He can make every throw in the book if he decides to pull the trigger
yea its rather odd. He is same as Brady and Manning as far as arm strength and that is obviously good enough.
I love the film breakdown but love the beginning and end with NFL films and awesome narration almost more its so good!
Thank you brother! I appreciate the love
Every time I see your video the more I can't wait till the season starts
There excellent videos
Remember when we thought Jared Goff was just a throw in for the Stafford trade? He's now the franchise guy. Thanks LA! We love him here
Im excited for this team to succeed next year. Hopefully their defense improves with all the changes next year. But they have a roster full of rookies.
So far it looks like their defense has made a huge leap.
Only 2 of those rookies will be starting. still young, but not mostly rookies
LETS GO
Exactly. He's not a OMA. He's the piece of the puzzle his team needs to make the picture complete, fits in perfectly
I said he was before this season
THAT'S what I'm waiting for, too... Damn it, JAMO w/ the gambling
The hardknocks of the lions had me sold. Great video. I think they're winning the north this year.
Thanks!
Great vid . Your content is always intriguing 🔥
Holmes/Campbell/B.Johnson are playing chess while everyone else is playing checkers.
This is a really good explanation on what they do! Really well done. As far as Goff goes, I'm glad he can now read defenses and is fully comfortable in this offense
Thanks Rogue!
Thanks OD! What do you define as 2 sink? Also, Miami is looking awfully spicy this year 👀
@@AlexRollinsNFL 2 sink is a variant of cover 2.
Happy to see you back 😁
Was waiting for a video on my lions!!!the league gonna feel our wrath this season

As a lions fan and lions youtuber love to see some awsome content on my team
Brees Brady and Manning definitely didnt have Stafford's arm strength and all of them were slow as hell. However, when you know you're not there to run or force balls into impossibly small windows you focus on strategy, timing, getting on page with your WR's, reading defenses... etc... in the end these abilities are way more valuable than breaking Calvin Johnsons fingers on a dart over the middle, or dancing around in a circle for 10 seconds putting strain on your OL and wear on your body... bc its a lot easier to throw a football if you didnt just get railroaded by a 280 pound behemoth the play before

The Lions are going to win more than one championship in the next 7 years
Anyone who say the successful Rams teams with Gurley knew Goff would shine in this offense.
That and hes in his prime now. People expect too much from 23/24 year old QBs. They do better now than back in the day but the prime years still start around 27/28. I think Goff is going to tear it up next year.

Thanks Moises!
@@AlexRollinsNFL Thanks. I certainly admire the Lions for playing well.

The Lions won more playoff games in 1957 than they have since 1957. Really hope they finally get it going.

Great stuff bro
The biggest example of this was the only offensive touchdown vs NYJ
Brock caught a 3 yard pass. Then ran for 45+ yards because of how out of place the defensive back field was
This vid is so a back handed compliment to Goff
Yah.. 😂
Lions are going to be good for years to come.
I always felt goff’s weakness was throwing on the run, or making a play if the original play breaks down. He has plenty of arm strength and touch IMO. Otherwise he wouldn’t throw that hole shot. That takes arm strength and confidence.
The Lions are just a fun team to watch right now. They have a real shot at winning the division this year.
I agree, I'd still take the Packers though
By “Goff still has to read this weird change up correctly” at 7:40 you mean “has to not be gobsmacked by the ineptitude of the Vikings secondary”
Hey, I didn't want to be the one to say it
Basically this entire video starts on the basis that the Lions establish the run dominantly first.
Funny how that gets lost in there so called analysis
I don't understand the hate for the dude. Is he Allen or Mahomes, of course not. But he will always be in the upper half of QBs. I think he's gonna be in the MVP race at the end of this year
@@joshlewis575I could he could have a 40 TD’s to 12-14 INT’s type season
If anything the lions are the ones limiting him. Recievers outside of st brown (who Goff made better) is nothing compared to the so called "better qbs".
You have to watch the games from a neutral standpoint to understand how limited of a QB he is. It’s easy to make a judgement based off stats. Yes he lead the league in many of these deep ball stats but they were a result of the other team reacting to play action as a result of constantly being gashed by the run game.
God it's been glorious seeing the Lions finally get some spotlight. I hope they win it all this year. If that happens, I can go out a happy man.
Great video

It allows for offensive balance.

I think a lot of great players are not giving a chance an football career because of
this boring, lazy dogma style of spread passing especially at RB, FB & TE.

Awesome dude
Thanks!
Goff has really found his stride. I think this team can do some real damage.
Other than 3TEs, how is this meaningfully different than what Kyle Shanahan has been doing in SF since 2017?
Very similar honestly. The passing offense is literally McVay's, but with a lot of sugar sprinkled onto the run game. AKA, the Shanahan offense
Excellent analysis, one thing though, I can’t remember anyone else ever saying that Goff has a weak arm other than you in this video.
