Harry's dedication to Cheryl is so under appreciated. He's a single dad (his wife is deceased) and he's braving the horrors of Silent Hill to get back a kid most people would expect him to see as a burden. He's not doing it at the threat off a pissed of wife, he's not doing it out of some biologically compelled obligation, he's doing it because Cheryl is his daughter and all they have in the world is each other. In the past I was never able to pin down why Silent Hill 3 was my favorite, but your videos have helped me realize that it's because of Heather and Harry and everything they represent.

Harry doesn't get enough appreciation, so I loved this video. While a devoted father, he was also very much human: clumsy, awkward, confused, stressed, probably a little prissy (remarking that Midwich's door painting is in poor taste) and uptight (Heather calls him a "worrywart"). These qualities made his determination to save Cheryl stand out even more, and that fallibility of character was what endeared me to him.
SH3 painted a rather complex picture of him. His journal to Heather, "To My Dear Daughter," disclosed his pain and inner struggle following Silent Hill. He dealt with dark thoughts of abandoning and even killing the baby he received, not knowing what she could become, confused if she'd "replaced" his lost Cheryl or was just another demon. His decision to raise her as his own, regardless of his grief, speaks of enormous courage and strength of character.
Also, I may be reading a bit much into this, but there is one line in "To My Dear Daughter" that always puzzled me a little: "The newly-born God wailed once and was dead." Harry seems to suggest he didn't really kill God himself? He goes on to claim it was Alessa's conscious resistance that killed it... So does that mean the bypass-final boss trick is canon?

    • @traumachild1737
      @traumachild1737 3 роки тому +11

By using all your bullets by the end of the game (and in essence not worrying about preserving yourself but instead killing the monsters that could be of harm to Cheryl) it makes sense that Alessa would fight back to protect Harry. Atleast that's how I see it.

One more point to show how much a loving father Harry is. In the first game his wife was already terminally ill and they knew she wouldn't live long. Despite that and knowing he'd have to raise Cheryl alone he still went through with adopting her, both for the happiness of his wife in her last years and to give Cheryl a home and family.

When reading the book that Harry wrote in, it depicts Harry as having his doubts about Cheryl and what thing was supposed to be spawned from her by the cult and Dhalia. Though as you progress foward in the book it shows that Harry deeply loved Heather even though he knew what her past was and her connection to Silent Hill. He loved and cared about her so much that he gave her the red liquid in a hardened capsule/tablet form and put it in a locket just in case that event ever happened. Even though she was Alessa Gallespie to Harry she was a Mason through and through.
In one of the endings she takes the name Cheryl Mason to remember her previous self and to honor her fathers last name... Heather/Cheryl mason truly is like her dad in every way, Brave and stubborn and badass and can handle weapons just like her old man.
Fun fact: the people who did the costume designs for Heather/Cheryl in SH3 were women :)

  • @BonecrusherT800

Excellent video, good to see Harry Mason finally getting much-needed attention and respect. He's a true blue hero if there ever was one, someone who quite literally goes to Hell and back for his child who isn't even blood-related. The fact he's so ordinary and yet against all odds still braves Silent Hill all in the name of Cheryl and never once quits or gives up makes him seem that much more heroic and badass. If there's an award for best father ever, he has surely both deserved and earned it. The decision to change the gender in the movie was pointless and silly (I say that as someone who actually likes the SH movie, too). As someone who grew up with an absent father and never knew him, I've got nothing but respect and admiration for good parents of both genders and to me Harry is the like the Dad I never had. I wish I'd had him as my father instead of the deadbeat, absent one I had, and in some ways he helps fill the void of my not-so-good father. Gans' reasoning is beyond ludicrous, a good parent regardless of gender goes above and beyond to protect their children, whether it's a mother or father. Harry Mason is a prime example of not only a good parent but also a true hero and in many ways he's one of the most unsung, underappreciated heroes in gaming. He doesn't have magic powers or a powered exosuit or massive Duke Nukem-esque firepower... he's just a devoted parent trying to rescue his child from horrors beyond imagination. You really don't get much more heroic than that.

I love the movie adaptation (please don't shoot me everyone) but the directors choice to change the gender of the parent willing to risk everything for their child always baffled me, especially because "a man wouldn't do that" and "it wouldn't work" is complete nonsense considering the game he was basing the movie off of proved that a father can do that.
It was truthful enough that Konami was able to create a dynasty of sorts in the form of the Silent Hill franchise all because of the original story of the love within a father-daughter relationship and how a PARENT, not gender exclusive, will do anything for their child.
    Great analysis as always!

I love Christophe Gans, always been a fan. I think he was a brilliant choice for the movie as he understood the idea of sound and imagery probably better than most.
From what I've read of his view making this, much like SH games, he had a theme, and that theme was Motherhood. His commentary is slightly misleading if you only see it as "Only a mother would do that," and instead look at the whole movie from the theme he wished to achieve. Mother of the cult, the mother who sacrificed her child, the mother of the child split in two, and the mother who walks through hell for her child. Even the use of nurses, who can also be matrons, fits into the theme.
It would have been great to see the Father being the antitrope, sure, but I can see why Gans decided to go with the poetic idea of the theme instead for the movie. Quite likely it's because he didn't realise it was an anti-trope and so thought by creating the thread he was honouring the central concepts of the Silent Hill game. You've only got to study any one of his movies to know he is a guy who shoots every scene by a theme, be it all one colour predominantly, one season, or one light, he never shoots anything without a prevalent concept in place first. Hell, just look at how he uses blue and brown in SH.

The diary you find where Harry admits that he resented the reborn Alessa and how he considered choking the baby out due to feeling how it robbed him of his little Cheryl only to stop and do his best all over again while apologizing to Alessa for even thinking that was one piece of diary that always hit raw. That despite the hell he faced, the trauma and the pain of having lost despite doing his best he soldiered on anyway, that even after knowing Alessa's supernatural background didn't stop him from being a father.

I was compelled to watch this twice. It articulates thoughts of my own that had been inchoate until this point. Having an 'every man' father as a protagonist was something you didn't really see in video games at that point. A trope flipped on its head as it were. Silent Hill 3 built upon it flawlessly in tragedy, yet I hadn't realized that was also a flipped trope. Christophe Gans didn't understand what made Silent Hill special. On that note I must say that you clearly do. Finally did a Harry episode!

Harry is such an underrated character. I feel like if another team got a hold of silent hill 1 and 3, and remade them, they’d screw up his character. They’d make him a badass action hero, or just make him a woman. What’s interesting about Harry is how he subverts expectations. He’s awkward, nervous, and human. He isn’t Superman. But he’s also caring and loving. And faces Silent Hill for his daughter.

Harry's depiction of a good responsible, devoted, and loving father is a representation of what men are supposed to be. It's a shame that depictions like this are few and far between nowadays, replaced more often than not by bumbling fools who give bad advice, are irresponsible, and irrational. This is most likely due to the prevalence of female chauvinism in the 21st century. It's sad that many today don't understand that you don't need to denigrate one gender in order to promote and foster progress for another. Men and women both have commendable qualities, and both can be flawed.

It did have its own canon and didn't faithfully follow the story of the game as well as it should have, and was at best a 5/10 movie. But the simple fact that the director made the executive decision to change the main character to a female because of his idea that fathers don't give as much of a shit about their children? That's fucking deplorable.

A male character I like is called Gus, from a game called Still life. You play his granddaughter in the game too. But they are in different time periods.
He is a detective who is helping a group of women who are the victims of a serial killer. The women are prostitutes, but he does not care about that. He helps them. Even going so far as to refuse to take their money in payment for helping, even though this is his job. It’s commented that no one want to know about them, and will only be brought up as a number, not as girls or people. They are largely ignored by others, helping each other when they can.
The women are treated with kindness by the game, in that they are treated more like humans. Not by those who made the game and Gus himself. His notes on them makes that even more clear. Even when something happened to one who annoyed me a bit, I was still sad and shocked.
Gus is a strong character, because when he finds out his boss is helping with a cover up, he is not having it.

I can't shake the feeling the name Humbert was considered for some sort of sick reason. Not only that, some of the promotional art for Silent Hill 3 features some suggestive images of Heather who is Cheryl reincarnated (I'm not sure on that one, but they have the same name and Heather did come from that Goddess Cheryl became). There's an official and very suggestive image of Heather with a partially unzipped vest without her orange shirt underneath (does not feature nudity, but does show some skin). Another suggestive piece of *official* art features Heather's back while in very short shorts, her butt in full view. Heather's design does also feature a very short skirt. I'm also seeing what's listed as a "Promotional Figure" of Heather with the unzipped vest and no under shirt on the Silent Will Wikia. Not sure if it's official, I can't find it anywhere except for on the Wikia page.
Heather is just 17 years old and I do believe (though I may be mistaken) the age of consent in Japan, where Team Silent resided during development of SH3, varies depending on the region. The oldest age limit in any Japanese region being 17. Clearly a deliberate choice to make Heather the minimum age of consent in all parts of Japan, though this might be because the game features a pregnant Heather. The devs could have just said she was 17 as too not stir up controversy by having pregnant minor in their game. SH3 still features a pregnant minor in most parts of the world, but she would not be considered one in Japan. They may have also figured outside cultures might be more accepting of the idea as it's based off virgin mothers of Gods like Mary from the Bible.
This is all speculation, none of this might not mean anything or it might mean something completely unrelated. My fear and disgust might just be making me see something that isn't there. Making connections where things don't actually connect. I might be overthinking everything and just giving into my worries and over active imagination. Still, the fact someone on the team wanted to name Cheryl after Dolores is dsigusting, and the connection Heather has to Cheryl seems like more than a simple coincidence to me. Not to mention the sexualized official art of Heather. I hope I'm wrong, but I just can't shake the suspicion that there's some sick reason for wanting to name Harry after Humbert and Cheryl after Dolores.

    • @thegamingmuse
      @thegamingmuse  6 років тому +8

My theory is that there was some darker aspect to the story originally, and it was changed, and the name was a holdover from that original idea. That's my theory - especially since a lot of the darker aspects of the game were controversial and even censored at the time, I bet that they had to tone down a lot of their ideas. The stuff about Heather and the suggestive imagery is on point - I think that part of the story is about the sexualization and the predatory voyuerism of society towards teen girls, and it makes you part of that.
The skirt wasn't originally the plan though. Watch the Making of Sh3 here on youtube and you'll find she was wearing jeans at first. It was two female artists who wanted her to be more traditionally feminine, and choose the skirt. I think it's a good fit - it makes her look more vulnerable and out of place in this horrific world.

I like how you mentioned how harry died. A lot of us asked how could he survive sh1 and be killed just like that. It was most likely an ambush. It's been a nearly 20 year crime scene to me. And also, I was wondering about that room in the nowhere church. Look at the blood trail going to the door then go outside in the hallway and look at the floor. Does thr blood still continue? If you keep following it, you'll be lead to the morgue room. 😱😳 sometimes I wonder if one of those bodies are his.

  • @jmort886

I really hope we haven't been interpreting Silent Hill wrong, and Harry was actually a Humbert Humbert clone, because pursuing/catching Alessa, getting rid of the mother, taking the young girl across America, never staying in one place long, murdering someone who tried to take her, and being pursued by a detective were all key points in Lolita.

If there is possibly another version of Harry roaming through Silent Hill, what would his role play in SH3 and future SH games? Would he be guiding Heather? Leading her to a righteous path or simply observing her from a distance? Also would he be different or the same in personality as he would if still alive?

If i had a Daughter and She goes missing in a situation like Silent Hill. I would do any to put My own life at risk to save Her.
I'm not sure at the near end where a ghostly woman would spawn out a new baby, insead of My Daughter, would be strange at first looking, but if You known beforehand on Why this a part of Your daughter, then I will instinctively accept Her and Run.

I heard another theory that SH3 could be more emotional if we weren't bent on revenge, i mean of all the stories and movies that we see, aren't they teaching us that: "killing doesn't solve anything?" Heather just dives in to kill Claudia and expresses her complete hatred towards her throughout the game.

Also, I didn't like the movie director changing the gender of the parent.
    I really liked Harry.
I have zero problem with having male protagonists like Harry.
I hate when a lot of guys still lie and pretend men have to never show their gentler sides, and has to have muscles etc.
Pretending women are the ones who keep pushing this on men: WRONG. Again, wrong.
It is mostly men forcing this unto other men and themselves.
Proof keeps stacking up against dudes like Andrew Tate: the names keeps pilling up.
Meanwhile you have women liking men like Harry and saying so openly: yet to those comments I always see men resppnding badly to our comments of acceptance.
They'd rather push the illogical cycle of "men dont have emotions, men must be muscular" etc, rather than break free of it because it is considered "WEAK" and "gay".
Men do this. Stop spreading this tox1c BS and stop pretending it's women demanding it!
