Hi Fred. You are right about getting the right antenna and improve the entire setup before using amps. My experience shows that having every step of your radio setup goes a long way to achieve excellent range. We do have an amp, but hardly ever use it. We tried to get things right a legal as possible here in Ireland. The endresult was a Lincoln 2, feeding into a COMET300 tuner, next step can be the amplifier or without, then feeding into a Low Pass Filter and from there of it goes up to a Gainmaster. All cables, including all patch leads are made from RG213. The SWR is 1.1 -1.2 over the entire spectrum. With this setup it is sometimes hard to say if a 203P really does deliver much more in reach. I believe in spending money on an top of the range antenna tuner, the best cables and overall in good equipment. This way a "burner" is hardly ever necessary, you can go to far away places! I think we have only once or twice used it. Overall I think it is perfectly possible to stay closer to the "legal" side of things by making the most of what you have without needing burners etc. It is important that you also give your power supply a plus tolerance of +10Amps above max power needed, don't use you power supply flat out. Once a power supply is "driven" to max the overall Quality of your Signal can deminish.
This person who sold me the amplifier said that when he used it, all the neighborhoods tv was shutting down because it was so powerful. Idk if that’s true or not but when we connected this to my radio the fuse did blow in the amplifier. Thank you for cb radio video 😊
Long ago and the dark distant past of analogue CRT televisions there was a potential for TVI as the unshielded internal oscillators of the televisions would be very close in frequency to CB operating frequencies. This combined with a poorly manufactured/set up/installed/filtered linear amplifier could mean that all the neighbors TVs would go out every time you keyed up. Since the advent of digital TV and the demise of the CRT this is far less likely to the point of being, for all intents and purposes, no longer a problem.
What you said: Good antenna does most of the job. And make sure your antenna has a good swr. That's the basic stuff and to me the most important. With a good antenna you increase your gain much better then with adding more power. Power is nice but not always the key.

I got an RM KL35 recently and it actually recommends using a low pass filter with it, which I got from Zetagi. I checked the circuit, which they supply online, and there was indeed no low pass fliter in it. These things all produce loads of harmonics on higher frequencies. So say a big "hello" to the police, fire-brigage, ambulances and everyone else who lives up on those harmonic frequencies :D
Great video! There are many factors to consider that are more important than just power. Power is overrated. Antenna, antenna location, SWR and a good cable are critical. Putting out a lot of watts does nothing except annoy people. In addition, unless you have matching sensitivity on the receiver you won’t hear people trying to contact you. Keep things in balance by sticking to basics.
You talking about people can hear you but you can´t hear them, well, but you did not mention that the KL300-P has a built in Preamp that puts on another 25db on the receiver to be able to hear people better. All RM amps that ends with a P has this built in preamp, it actually works pretty good. I do agree that you gotta put your money on a great antenna and cable first, and tune the antenna to the best possible. in my opinion if you´ve done all that an amp with a preamp can help sort out some of the problems if your house is located in a bad spot or something like that. Thanks for the video... :D
Thanks for the comment. Yes your correct some amps do come with a pre-amp. However ive had them and in reality they just increase the noise level. Without dsp they are almost useless. More on the subject here. ua-cam.com/video/0czQFv5zdCY/v-deo.html

Hi Fred, I am watching your videos as I have a slight interest in returning to CB radio, so thank you for this run of videos, I was a child of the 70s, older brothers had CBs, all American AM at that stage and I had a home base in my bedroom. I lived out in the countryside at that stage so putting up an 18 foot Di pole was no issue and noise was minimal . Now I live in town so this will be much more difficult My favourite CB I had was a Tristar something or another that had SSB etc, then FM was made legal and things seemed to all go down hill for me One thing you have not mentioned here and does interest me is back then everybody sat on 14 or 19 which was mainly for truckers and then moved away to another channel, is this still the case? Thanks again for the videos and I will be going through many more as I research my return to cb radio
Hi Andrew. Hang out Channels depend on area. Around my QTH channel 19 is used for everyone. Channel 14 is no longer used. Move up the road to North London and they hang out on channel 35. I think in general channel 19 is the most popular on UK FM.
14 was AM back in the day , 19 was a FM thing . Anyway they are the open or emergency channels, you should call whoever you are trying to contact then move to any of the other 39 channels that arent busy , turn your power down if you are close enough , keep the airwaves clean . On VHF marine 16 is the open/emergency channel .
They are called pre amps and if you get any interference issues all a pre amp will do is increase your interference problem. If you don't get interference now you might if you connect up to one. Best thing for receive is a " loop on the ground" aerial on a twin VFO HF radio.
If you start with 10W and a received signal of S5 and increase your power to 400W, that’s a gain of 16dB which will take your signal up to just over S7.5. Higher power costs a lot yet provides far less gain than most new amateurs understand. Invest your time to improve your antenna system as much as you can and the results will be far better. Your reception is very likely going to improve as well.
I live rather remote, so despite having a Sirio 5/8 wave up high, using Messi and Peloni Airbourne 10 coax and M&P connectors, reaching people is tricky. I don't want to run a lot of power so I run a KL60 that is not really enough but less chance of casing problems (I get around 20w from 4w UKFM input). There's a little insertion loss and even more adding a LPF to the chain so I am taking a risk in only having the amp inline but 4>20w isn't a big jump. The KL60 is an 11/10m band model so you would *think* there would already be some bandpass filtering but really not from what I can see. I did replace the DC cable with a longer, but thicker piece and I used thicker wire to go from the SO-239 to PCB. I also moved the mosfet to a better contact angle to touch the heatsink case, added a lot of solder to the transistor's heat spreading plate, used a decent thermal paste to make contact between the case and the transistor. Lastly I added a Noctua fan to the top which keeps everything cool.
@@CB-RADIO-UK Not really no, I am only interested in the nostalgia element so 27/81 operating. So I would need the Yagi to be mounted vertically, but in either case, I can't be doing with the rotator etc. I am a radio ham, callsign M0SAZ so operate all over HF on my end fed half wave antenna!
Apart from the best antenna you can afford it’s also important to get the best coaxial cable and add a choke, conditions are on the up so more power is not always the solution as great dx can be worked on low power.Cheers Fred 73s 108at176 Chris
I don't agree with buying expensive coax for hf. A transmit power of 50watt through 30mtrs RG213 your loss is about 6.5 watts the same through LMR400 is about 7.5 watts. so at 50watts to gain 1 s point you would need to transmit at 200 watts 4 x in the input power 6db equal to one s point. so losing 6.5 watts on 30meteres of coax isn't noticeable. this hi spec coax is really designed for vhf and uhf and people that have big pockets and lack knowledge of how radio works. the spec can change on the cable you buy but they are printed on the cable and on the sticker on the drum. a simple calculation and you can work out what you need to know. a low pass filter is a good idea and no one mentioned a rf choke to stop common mode this stops the coax radiating and causing inference. Bin the tuner and use a resonant antenna which will radiate properly to the frequency your using.

Its good your hearing signals. I was in this situ myself when i started. Its most likely the people you are hearing are running power so have a greater range than yourself. First thing would be to check your SWR and try to get it as low as possible. The 1/2 wave with a good SWR should get out well even on 4 watts. If still no luck you may have to consider running a small amp.
@@gibbosj08 Get your aerial up to about 30-35 feet above ground level (AGL) Because your aerial is that low you are transmitting what is called "NVIS"( near vertical incident skywave). That means the best of your signal is going nearly straight up and nearly straight back down. Getting your aerial UpTo 30-35feet AGL will make it radiate better towards the horizon instead of being a "cloud warmer". I hope this has helped. 🇬🇧👍😎👍🇬🇧
Hi. In theory you can put an antenna in a light tree. People have done it. You would just need to check the SWR to make sure its at a safe level. Some people use a cheap 12 volt leisure battery and other use expensive lithium iron. If your running legal amounts of power you should get good run time from a smaller 12v battery.

Worth pointing out it's not unlawful/ 'breaking the law' it is breaking the rules. Legislation is rules and regulations, not law, and require contractual agreement (can be argued includes tacit agreement). The overall fact is that the equipment is yours and to take it from you without your permission is theft, that most definitely is unlawful.
The autorities can and will take it away form you if they think you have broken the rules / laws, I have learned that the hard way myself... And even if you have the law on your side it does not matter if the corrupt judges is of another opinion.
NEVER EVER USE RG-58 or MINI 8U on a base station. Run RG-213. Its like driving a expensive car with bald tires or having the windows open with the heat on.
"Ultraflex" refers to stranded cable vs solid core coax. I use LMR 400 stranded for my beam because it needs to rotate. I use RG-213 as jumpers in my shack because I need to move thing around often.
RG8mini has nearly the exact same consistencies as RG213 with the added bonus' of being more flexible and therefore not needing to drill big holes in walls. If you're serious then use M&P hyperflex 10 or LMR400. HOWEVER I do agree that RG58 coax is a waste of money even if it claims to be military spec 95%screened.
Adding a linear/burner to your station is at best cheating and at worst. Going to get you into a lot of trouble. Height is might. Adding power is just shite!!! Get your base station areal UpTo 35feet AGL for TX and a loop on the ground for Rx. You will hear them and they will hear you. A decent antenna with good quality coax and get the antenna away from the house. Yes masting gets a little more difficult but it's not impossible unless you live in an apartment. Forget RG58 coax even if it is 95%screened, you need RG8 mini at the least or better. Preferably M&P hyperflex 10 or LMR400. IF YOU ARE NOT prepared to invest in your station then you are just playing with radios and not taking it seriously so just stick to talking with your drinking buddy down the road chatting crap and playing music. You may as well stick with your msg mount on the radiator or your dv27 on a bikky tin lid in the loft. 12W is MORE than enough to work the world. In 1978 I did it with 4W on AM with the DV27 on the bikky tin lid stuck between the chimney pots on a three story Victorian farm house in a valley location. Now I use a homemade 5/8~ high gain areal at about 40' AGL pushing 10W and doing the exact same thing. Worked Japan, Brazil and Argentina at the weekend, multiple stations on multiple bands INCLUDING 11 meters mid block ch36-7&8 USB.

Linear 11 meter running on the27, are cb radio Legal to transmit and Sales . Although they only work at 20 to 75 watt w proper ant. On a base w large ant maybe 100 watt max to have SWR anywhere close. And only transmitt on short keys. Otherwise they will burn up your radio. Al you really need is 20 to 40 watt w SWR no more than 2. Or it will distort your carrier and f___ck up everything. With 4 watt unit tuned to 1.1 to one swr is all you need and mic gain. On skipland will go further. You just can't squeeze a chicken to lay more eggs ,it will pass it off turn and bite you.
Don't waste time on these junk amps. Just buy yourself a used HF ham rig, modify it if it already isn't and use it on CB. Way better performance and they run clean. Plus, you can drive a ham amp with it and get real power that doesn't wipe out the spectrum with a dirty signal.
Linear amplifiers, in the CB context, are just tools for the tools. Those who truly wish to be knowledgeable about radio will go down the proper route of study and taking the necessary examinations to become legally licenced, non-QRM causing radio amateurs.

Nice upload Fred.
Yes thats a good shout as the cheaper ones do splatter.

Frid in the shed your utube videos are awesome 👌 👏 👍
Great video! There are many factors to consider that are more important than just power. Power is overrated. Antenna, antenna location, SWR and a good cable are critical. Putting out a lot of watts does nothing except annoy people. In addition, unless you have matching sensitivity on the receiver you won’t hear people trying to contact you. Keep things in balance by sticking to basics.
Yes totally agree. Always work on your antenna and set up first. Get that right and you prob do not need any extra.
I'm fond of my KL703 and KL 503 HD. Good little heaters.
Also good for toast :-)
@@CB-RADIO-UK Yeah you are right but i think the preamp works pretty well in some cases, depending on the signal.

You're learning, Fred. You're - which is the contraction of "you are" is what is used here. Now your learning (as in the learning that belongs to you, since your is possessive) can be improved if you learn this difference. Also, the word donor doesn't have an E in it unless it is a bloody kebab! 😁

Now I live in town so this will be much more difficult
My favourite CB I had was a Tristar something or another that had SSB etc, then FM was made legal and things seemed to all go down hill for me
One thing you have not mentioned here and does interest me is back then everybody sat on 14 or 19 which was mainly for truckers and then moved away to another channel, is this still the case?
Hi. Great video. Will you be making a video of a receiver. Forgot what they are called but instead of boosting your signal it brings others in. Thanks
Do you mean a Preamp ? Here ua-cam.com/video/0czQFv5zdCY/v-deo.html
@@CB-RADIO-UK hi. Yes
Spot on. Antenna and coax first.
12:25 Minimum power on the Yaesu FT-450D is 5W.
Sounds like you have a very well thought out set up. Ever thought of putting up a Yagi ?
@@CB-RADIO-UK Not really no, I am only interested in the nostalgia element so 27/81 operating. So I would need the Yagi to be mounted vertically, but in either case, I can't be doing with the rotator etc. I am a radio ham, callsign M0SAZ so operate all over HF on my end fed half wave antenna!
Apart from the best antenna you can afford it’s also important to get the best coaxial cable and add a choke, conditions are on the up so more power is not always the solution as great dx can be worked on low power.Cheers Fred 73s 108at176 Chris
Whats your thoughts on Ultraflex ?
@@CB-RADIO-UK I use ultra flex 7 Fred and on hf I find it’s excellent, also perfect for use with the rotator as it flexes perfectly

Yes AM for FM. SSB is a longer delay on the relay.
How do you match the amplifier to the radio. Is there a 80% or something of the antenna. You want the antenna to have just a little bit more power handling than the amp
Not quite sure i understand. Most antennas can handle 500w + All antennas are 50 ohm so match the radio.
EFLW for 26.695-27.99125Mhz might be the way to go.

Cheers Fred my swr is low it hardly registers on the meter
@@gibbosj08
Get your aerial up to about 30-35 feet above ground level (AGL)
Because your aerial is that low you are transmitting what is called "NVIS"( near vertical incident skywave).
That means the best of your signal is going nearly straight up and nearly straight back down.
Getting your aerial UpTo 30-35feet AGL will make it radiate better towards the horizon instead of being a "cloud warmer".
I hope this has helped.

Interesting point but if they wanted too or if they had the funding to do so iam sure ofcom could take my equipment and fine me.
Whats your thoughts on Ultraflex ?
"Ultraflex" refers to stranded cable vs solid core coax. I use LMR 400 stranded for my beam because it needs to rotate. I use RG-213 as jumpers in my shack because I need to move thing around often.
The differences in terms of loss are minimal. Another old wives tale.
RG8mini has nearly the exact same consistencies as RG213 with the added bonus' of being more flexible and therefore not needing to drill big holes in walls.
If you're serious then use M&P hyperflex 10 or LMR400.
HOWEVER I do agree that RG58 coax is a waste of money even if it claims to be military spec 95%screened.
rg58 is rated at 800 watts at 30mhz. rg213 is 5000watts at 30mhz. another waste of $$$
