That sound (children) is the sound of all the hairs on the back of my neck going up, and it has been for 50 years... No other sound captures the spirit and the sound of speed in the way that 917 does. It booms, it barks, it howls, it screams and it shrieks and whines, all at the same instant.... Nothing else has such a full house in harmonics. No other sound characterises the thrill of speed as perfectly as that.
Fantastic comment, I couldn't have put it better myself! Adored the Porsche 917 since watching the Steve McQueen film on the TV years ago. Wonderfully dominant car and it has that element of danger that cars used to have back then, as evidenced by the spin at the end of this video!
Well I think matra ms 650 actually is a better sounding V12... my dad saw it live in 1971 here in argentina, the day ignacio giusti died after an accident.. you could hear the car the entire lap. But in terms of race I choose the 917 all the time. Cheers 🍻
You are just right Kneedragon, such an innovative car at thet time , perhaps still now; and what a sound, such a music thanks to the air cooled flat 12 designed by Hans Metzger and Helmut Boss. Amazing to remember that Ferdinand Piesch the then head of design at Porsche was reluctant to launch the manufacturing of the 1st batch of 25. Thanks to his Grand Pa Ferry Porsche to having encouraged him: now we enjoy every moment with the 917.
Revving it sounds awesome enough but that thunderous growl during downshifts under braking is maybe the best single noise ever to have graced my eardrums....
