Back in the early 1970s, I met and chatted briefly with Vincent Price. Mr. Price told me that his favorite Roger Corman film was, "The Pit and The Pendulum." I told Mr. Price that I had seen that film soon after it was released. I thought it was a very atmospheric and well-crafted film. Seeing Jack Nicholson watch Corman walk up to accept his oscar just hit me for some reason. Just from Jacks look you can tell how much Roger means to him. Long live Roger Corman
Yeah, Corman meant the world to Nicholson. There's a reason why Nicholson gets the most screentime on the documentary Corman's World (the reality of a scheduled twenty minute interview turning into about four hours)...and why he broke down into tears at the last section.
RIP Roger Corman (1926-2024) I thought for sure he'd make to 100. I have watched this video, probably over a dozen times, and shared it on Facebook, and to friends. Now I'm watching it again, and sharing it again. It's a great video.
Well done, I worked on 10 Corman films. Early ones for New World Pictures when he’d just left AIP. Your right , it was my film school. Joe Dante has mentioned that Corman used to say to young Directors, “if you do 2 successful films for me , you’ll never have to see me again” ..I was the Propmaster on Big Bad Mama and Crazy Mama , and most of the Nurses films..Art Directed a few films for him..Joe Dante’s PIRANHA. for one. Jonathon Demme’s FAST CHARLIE..oh man, I met so many people there at New World

Roger Corman is the American Dream personified. He put out so many of the movies I love so very much over many decades. He was a master at getting the most out of limited resources. He didn't hit it out of the park every time, but when he did he could make a $50,000 movie look like he spent $3 million. The Poe adaptations from the 60s are personal favorites of mine and are as good or better than anything mainstream Hollywood was putting out at the time. And Death Race 2000 and Rock and Roll High School are two of my favorite movies of all time.
Roger Corman is a true icon...it's incredible how many up & coming talent both in front of & behind the camera got there first break because of him. Granted some of his movies were not what you would call "classics" , but still unique in their own way. The master of making more with less...Thank you Roger for decades of fun, enticing entertainment!

Corman's Poe pictures are among my very favorite movies. I happened to catch Haunted Palace (I know, honorary Poe) in a dive motel room in Memphis circa 1999. The movie was a little hard for me to follow because a crackhead was having a standoff with cops right outside my room and he kept yelling. These cops were imaginary. For whatever reason, I instantly fell in love with the saturated palette, Vincent Price and the theatrical set production of that movie. I think there was also a deeper realization that a thing could be good and entirely outside of conventional acclaim. Haunted Palace is not a great movie, but the world is big enough that it can be awesome within its spot. That one incident is what led me to Hammer, Romero, grindhouse, and many, many other things. I literally started hitting pawn shops for used VHS tapes the next day even though I had no vocabulary to describe the movies I wanted. Now, I have spent the last quarter century throwing popcorn in my living room, creating my own fiction (roleplaying games) and going to late, late shows. Most of the people I knew when I was staying in that motel on Elvis Presley Way are dead or are living small lives in small towns. As silly as my life is, I have put many, many miles on my boots, seen some crazy things, and made a whole lot of friends along the way. There is a lot more to my story and personality than scary movies. But I don't think I would have had the same life or be the same person if I didn't see Haunted Palace that night in Memphis. Thank you Mr. Corman.

I did "courses" at the School of Corman at their Venice Beach studios near Gold's Gym... like learning to swim by being thrown in the pond. Fantastic overview. A SuperCut of every Corman cameo in the features of all his graduates would be stellar.

I went to Raindance film school in London. Elliot Grove gave a lesson in production where he quoted Corman selling the rights to a story that later became Mars Attacks!
Masque of the Red Death is still brilliant, but to be honest any of his films with the legend that is Vincent Price are great. In fact a DC special on Vincent Price would be awesome.
And in the meantime, serious Vincent Price devotees should track down An Evening With Edgar Allan Poe, which is a tour de force one-man show that shows off Price's stage chops.

'Battle Beyond The Stars' is fun, I have always enjoyed 'Sorceress', his Poe films are wonderful, his executively produced 'Dinoshark', 'Dinocroc vs. Supergator', 'Piranhaconda', 'Sharktopus', 'Sharktopus vs. Pteracuda' and 'Sharktopus vs. Whalewolf' are my guilty pleasure films. Great video! I think you nailed it at the end. One of the many skills that Roger Corman has shown throughout his career has been his ability to adapt to changes in the industry. I recall watching an interview of him with Charles Band. Corman was asking Band how he thought films could still remain profitable in this modern era. The business end of entertainment can easily be unnoticed but it can make all the difference. We definitely need more creators with that Corman fire in them. Thanks for this great video.
Ron Howard directed Grand Theft Auto and then Splash, which inspired Disney to make The Little Mermaid. Who wrote the songs.for that? Howard Ashman and Alan Menken, late of Little Shop of Horrors. Chinatown involved several Corman alums (Nicholson, Ladd, Towne, Rance Howard), and then inspired Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
When Roger was giving his Oscar acceptance speech, we saw Jack Nicholson and Quentin Tarantino, literally, sitting on the edge of their seats, catching every word the Great Man uttered. Thank-you Roger, one of a kind, to be sure. And, thank-you Robin & Crew, for providing an excellent tribute to The Master. :)

He is such a talent and gave so many opportunities to others while sticking to his craft. Some would call his films to be exploitative, but only Roger Corman could make an exploitation film seem like a cinema classic. There are so many Roger Corman favorites of mine that just come from such a wide range of genres. I guess the greatest compliment I could give to a Roger Corman film is for it to be in my video library in multiple formats. So, I will list the top three Corman films that I own first on VHS and then on DVD: 1. The St. Valentine's Day Massacre (1967). A great film to double feature with The Untouchables (1987). 2. Dementia 13 (1963) 3. Attack Of The Crab Monsters (1957). A pure guilty pleasure and the one Corman film that I feel should be remade.
Roger Corman is a concept witch I accept for ALL arts 01 - Make Cheap 02 - Make more To make a Twist try something different with what you got and make It a Go. At 10 years old, "The Attack of the Crab Monsters" was one of my first late nite TV monster movies, even though I had to stretch my self swallow some of the silly science. (I was a nerd). I watched it with my dad and it still makes me nostalgic 60 years later when I stream it. (when no one is looking, of course)

AWESOME tribute to this god of cinema! I met him when I was a kid, and shame on me for never simply showing up at his door and beginning for a job, he was *such* a nice guy! (And his wife, Julie, was also very nice to fans--I met them at a convention where they were promoting Battle Beyond the Stars.) [Apropos of nothing, I saw Tidal Wave in Times Square back in the day. Bucket of Blood is a great. I first heard of it from Peter Shickele on his NPR radio show Shickele Mix. It’s a movie so good, Hershel Gordon Lewis stole the whole plot for Color Me Blood Red. And Jess Franco used the plot too.
I always loved the little in-joke Joe Dante put in Piranha,where you hear birds chirping over the New World logo.Dante says it was to signify that Corman was "Cheap,cheap,cheap"!
Needed shoutout to John Sayles’ tenure as Corman-student scriptwriter: The Howling is now official 80’s Classic, Alligator and The Challenge are hidden gems, and Battle Beyond the Stars is every SW-knockoff trope done RIGHT. When Sayles was writing Piranha, Corman showed him a map of the river leading from the lab to the lake, and pointed out, “Have something happen here, here, and here:”. Basic screenwriting class in one sentence.
There’s nothing like working on Roger Corman movies. I got quite the education on some myself in the frightening “Carnosaur” era! 💜 Wonderful experiences.

RIP to one of the masters of cinema. It is a sin that so many people look down on his work, and completely ignore the opportunities he afforded some of our most beloved Hollywood alumni. May this wonderful man finally get the recognition and appreciation he so richly deserves
I'm for a long time aware of his key contribution to the manifesting of The Silence of the Lambs; a film that I fell in love upon the first notes of the phenomenal (unjustly not nominated then as well) score and the amazing Orion Pictures logo and opening titles. Thank you RC for being the genius behind that as well. I adore that dramatic thriller (sorry but I never understood why it's labeled a horror- the horror of that nislabeling).
There would never be another Roger Corman. Most at first would write him off as a Low Budget Producer but the fact despite some schlock he has produced real quality films the Edgar Allan Poe films still hold up pretty well. Some like Death Race and even films like Caged Heat become Cult Classic. He also fostered talent the likes no one can ever expect. He is a real Hollywood Rebel. It is just sad that in todays environment of the entertainment industry we would never have a talent like Corman or people would never nurture young talent anymore.

Corman films have been part of my viewing experience since the mid 80's when I was in high school. I collect his films on DVD and Blu Ray and always love them.
Point of fact: Carnosaur was written in the 80s, before Jurassic Park, by Harry Adam Knight, whose pulp novels are very readable (my personal favourite is The Fungus)
Id like to thank Mr Corman for his two outstanding contributions to cinematic history that changed my life, and the both appeared in "Battle beyond the Stars".
The Haunted Palace is a very fine horror movie. It's based on the H.P. Lovecraft story The Case of Charles Dexter Ward (it's also the first movie in which the Necronomicon is mentioned).
When I read a book that highlighted his film career, I was flabbergasted at how many of them I knew were connected to him. One of the biggest surprises was The Private Eyes with Don Knotts and Tim Conway.
Hey, that white T-Bird crash was shot for Candy Stripe Nurses, I was the guy sitting on the green bus bench. a stunt I had to do besides Set Dressing the picture. They must have repurposed the scene for the redu of Cockfighter , and without me in it

Unlike many other low budget successes (AIP and Cannon come to mind), Corman never gave into the temptation of "We're making all this money on low budget films, let's use that to make BIG budget films, so we can REALLY make money!"
My favorite of the Poe cycle for SO many reasons: Nicholas Roeg's cinematography, Vincent Price, Hazel Court, a script that asks what is the true moral way to live in a frequently unjust world and an ending credit sequence that uses images from a Marseilles Tarot deck (which, fun fact, is the deck used by the Red Death in the film; the card he hands over to Gino is the Judgement card from that deck).
"Roger Corman didn't go to film school. Roger Corman was film school."

Corman was just as big of an influence on modern theatre, as Cannon Films. These are the real film makers.

At 10 years old, "The Attack of the Crab Monsters" was one of my first late nite TV monster movies, even though I had to stretch my self swallow some of the silly science.
(I was a nerd).
I watched it with my dad and it still makes me nostalgic 60 years later when I stream it. (when no one is looking, of course)

AWESOME tribute to this god of cinema! I met him when I was a kid, and shame on me for never simply showing up at his door and beginning for a job, he was *such* a nice guy! (And his wife, Julie, was also very nice to fans--I met them at a convention where they were promoting Battle Beyond the Stars.) [Apropos of nothing, I saw Tidal Wave in Times Square back in the day. It was fun garbage!]

Bucket of Blood is a great. I first heard of it from Peter Shickele on his NPR radio show Shickele Mix. It’s a movie so good, Hershel Gordon Lewis stole the whole plot for Color Me Blood Red. And Jess Franco used the plot too.
I always loved the little in-joke Joe Dante put in Piranha,where you hear birds chirping over the New World logo.Dante says it was to signify that Corman was "Cheap,cheap,cheap"!

Needed shoutout to John Sayles’ tenure as Corman-student scriptwriter: The Howling is now official 80’s Classic, Alligator and The Challenge are hidden gems, and Battle Beyond the Stars is every SW-knockoff trope done RIGHT.
When Sayles was writing Piranha, Corman showed him a map of the river leading from the lab to the lake, and pointed out, “Have something happen here, here, and here:”. Basic screenwriting class in one sentence.
There’s nothing like working on Roger Corman movies. I got quite the education on some myself in the frightening “Carnosaur” era! 💜 Wonderful experiences.

RIP to one of the masters of cinema. It is a sin that so many people look down on his work, and completely ignore the opportunities he afforded some of our most beloved Hollywood alumni. May this wonderful man finally get the recognition and appreciation he so richly deserves

I'm for a long time aware of his key contribution to the manifesting of The Silence of the Lambs; a film that I fell in love upon the first notes of the phenomenal (unjustly not nominated then as well) score and the amazing Orion Pictures logo and opening titles. Thank you RC for being the genius behind that as well. I adore that dramatic thriller (sorry but I never understood why it's labeled a horror- the horror of that nislabeling).
There would never be another Roger Corman. Most at first would write him off as a Low Budget Producer but the fact despite some schlock he has produced real quality films the Edgar Allan Poe films still hold up pretty well. Some like Death Race and even films like Caged Heat become Cult Classic. He also fostered talent the likes no one can ever expect. He is a real Hollywood Rebel. It is just sad that in todays environment of the entertainment industry we would never have a talent like Corman or people would never nurture young talent anymore.
He wasn't really "allowed" to do it back then. He just found his path and cut it.

Corman is the kind of guy I call "an uncrowned king".
"My scruples faded away" when he saw the income from a film. What a candid comment.
Corman films have been part of my viewing experience since the mid 80's when I was in high school. I collect his films on DVD and Blu Ray and always love them.
Its simply incredible how influencial he is. A true master of his craft.
Point of fact: Carnosaur was written in the 80s, before Jurassic Park, by Harry Adam Knight, whose pulp novels are very readable (my personal favourite is The Fungus)

Maybe he had disagreements over how it turned out, but to me, GAS-S-S-S is an extremely underrated one.
Id like to thank Mr Corman for his two outstanding contributions to cinematic history that changed my life, and the both appeared in "Battle beyond the Stars".

The Haunted Palace is a very fine horror movie. It's based on the H.P. Lovecraft story The Case of Charles Dexter Ward (it's also the first movie in which the Necronomicon is mentioned).
wow... this was fantastic. I'm a huge fan of old movies but never knew this many people came through Corman movies. Great job on this.
When I read a book that highlighted his film career, I was flabbergasted at how many of them I knew were connected to him. One of the biggest surprises was The Private Eyes with Don Knotts and Tim Conway.

One thing that went unmentioned was that it was Monte Hellman who financed "Reservoir Dogs." The the most impactful debut film of the last 40 years.

Hey, that white T-Bird crash was shot for Candy Stripe Nurses, I was the guy sitting on the green bus bench. a stunt I had to do besides Set Dressing the picture. They must have repurposed the scene for the redu of Cockfighter , and without me in it

one other aspect of corman u was all the great old master actors who worked for him like vincent price boris karloff peter lorrie basil rathbone check out the terror and watch the seens of karloff and jack nicholson , karloff is giving jack a master class in acting it wasnt just corman who was teaching at corman u

Unlike many other low budget successes (AIP and Cannon come to mind), Corman never gave into the temptation of "We're making all this money on low budget films, let's use that to make BIG budget films, so we can REALLY make money!"

The Masque of the Red Death, freaking masterpiece!
My favorite of the Poe cycle for SO many reasons: Nicholas Roeg's cinematography, Vincent Price, Hazel Court, a script that asks what is the true moral way to live in a frequently unjust world and an ending credit sequence that uses images from a Marseilles Tarot deck (which, fun fact, is the deck used by the Red Death in the film; the card he hands over to Gino is the Judgement card from that deck).
