JEEP CHEROKEE ( XJ ) REAR UPPER SHOCK BOLT FIX
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 тра 2013
- Alot of people have asked me how I fixed my upper shock bolts on my 1996 Jeep Cherokee ( XJ ). Well I used my impact hammer or Air Hammer and knocked the old bolt out, then with a piece of safety wire and pulled a new bolt through the hole..that's about it..lol You need 4 Grade 8 bolts 3/8"or 5/16" x 1 1/2" long. 4 lock washers and 4 nuts to match.

1992 Cherokee, bolts came right out. Got lucky. From the rust belt state of PA too
im with ya on the eye protection. just had rust drilled out of my cornea 2 weeks ago...
Going to try this next week thanks for the advice...hope it works. As much as I love my jeep I have to say the engineers that designed it had a very sick sense of humor!!
Great video! I am looking at replacing my leaf springs and shocks soon, and I've heard it is really common to break these bolts when disassembling. Once a week for the past month I have been *carefully* spraying them with PB Blaster, and when I remove them I plan on hitting them with a torch, so HOPEFULLY I don't need to resort to your method. Because of this video, though, I will be sure to have the correct fasteners in stock, and I will be better prepared than before!
Thanx!!!!! Greatly appreciated,.. I recently installed a rough country 4.5 x series lift and ran into the same problem.. I've been thinking and devising crazy ways of fixing this and THIS is the easiest.. Thanx again.
Man, this is the best fix it method out there. I just replaced both rear shocks and it worked flawlessly, thanks again buddy, you saved me from unnecessary work and headaches!!!
Check this out. It's a pretty good fix as well amzn.to/2pyyI6u
Thanks for the info. Gonna be doing a shock replacement soon and wanted to get as much info as I can before I jump into it. Keep the vids coming...
I had the exact same issue like I'm sure thousands of others had..you did a good thing here with that vid...thanks for the ideas on how to get em out..just for information purposes for following users..the ratchet is a 3/8" drive ratchet with long extention and the one with the 14mm socket is a 1/4 " drive extention..the bolts needed are also 3/8" bolts.
Great Video! Helped us out a lot this weekend when the bolts broke on me. I had heard of this method and even read a thread on it but having video was priceless! made it quick and painless. Thank you!
Alan Akers Thanks Alan glad I could help. I have another Channel Everyday-XJ and you can find my website www.Everyday-XJ.com its noting but stuff for the Jeep Cherokee
Spot on! Twisted my bolts off and then thought now what? I will add stick to this plan. I thought I could add 5/8 bolts, they fit straight in from underneath, but when trying to fish them in, they don't make the angle into the hole do to the bolt thickness. You saved my bacon today!
Thanks! Great finding shortcut videos on stuff I need to get done! The only thing I did do different was snake through little hole first, came out big hole. but u got lucky first try,
THX again Man!
This video was a life saver. I really appreciate the posting of this video!
Excellent idea - very smart. Thank you. Saved me loads of time and trouble.
Your video was very helpful, all the rear upper shock bolts broke. I used the air hammer and wire technique and problem solved.
i just welded my new shocks right to the subframe lol. 275k miles, i doubt its going to live long enough to need new shocks again
Great video!! Just when I thought I was stuck, you saved me lol thanks!
Great video amigo! Gotta tackle this job next weekend on my 96 XJ to get my state inspection sticker. Thanks so much for posting!
Awesome fix, I was just about ready to set the jeep on fire but I'm gonna try this first
Kick ass ideas man! You could even just tack that weld that bolt on from the bottom so you wouldn't have to worry about it spinning and trying to get a wrench up in there. Good vid keep'em coming.
Great idea! (this is pretty much how i figured out how to repair a VW's broken clutch cable tube mount, inside the tunnel (main 'unibody' 'frame' section) on a Volkswagen Bug' floor pan, in '76, (but used a 5/16-18 cable lock for that)..
This procedure worked perfect for me! Thanks!! On drivers side a 1" bolt worked better cause access is a liitle more cramped!
Great Video Man, Doing my lift kit now..HEHE!!!
Thanks for the video
Thanks for the info. I need to do this very thing with one of the rear shocks!!
Thanks for posting this fix. It worked great.
dude you r a life saver this fix works so great and is easy
Thanks Michael..and if you would please subscribe to my other channel just for Jeep Cherokees and check out my website www.EVERYDAY-XJ.COM
great idea..... always keep spare wire, bolts nuts in your tool box
Man I don't ever leave comments but this was fkn awesome! Thanks!
dude I love you. on mine the nuts are rusted on and the stock bolts are just spinning. gona cut the shock off and go from there. awesome ideer. thanks
Thanks, Air Hammer worked like a champ! But #8 hardware was a little too big for my shocks, and 1 1/2" bolts wouldn't fit (user error?) so I went with shorter ones, 1". Wish I had found 1 1/4" but Lowes didn't have them.
dude thank you 🙏. was halfway through the first bolt drilling and tapping. thought to myself same thing ....”fuck this”.... thanks again for the video
Gosh, Life Saver wish I could post a pic with comment to show finished product!
This worked great. Fast and Simple. AIr hammer at Harbor Freight for $10 pick. Thanks got me out of what I thought was a Jam
John
Man, I thought I was screwed when that first bolt broke. Then I found this video. A trip to town for an air hammer (BONUS!), 1 1/2"x 3/8" bolts, washers, and nuts, and some wire. Passenger side was a snap, drivers side was a pain (didn't see the comment below about shorter bolts), just made the holes a little bigger. Thank you, thank you, thank you for this video!!! And thanks for the heads up on the safety glasses, holy shit does some stuff come off of there.
lol glad I could help scott, you could have used a hammer and a old extension also..but this way you got a new toy..lol air hammers are fun! lol
You seem like a really fun guy to hang out and work on shit with haha. Thanks a ton for this vid, I think it's going to work for me. Earned a sub!
used the larger bolts i did. double lock washers on both sides help alot
Dude... VERY super-hero-like... Can't wait to see what your mouse traps look like!! Beers to you bro; all weekend.
hahahahahahaha
Damn now I have to invent a mouse trap..lol
Just had to do this on my TJ. I also did the air hammer trick. Wayyyy quicker than breaking off 6 bit
Trying to put a lift kit in and somebody has previously done this modification. Problem is, the new bolts are soinning as im trying to take off the nuts. Visegrips wont hold it, nothing helps. And its not even loosened a full turn. Im only on the first shock and about to tear my hair out. Already finished the front end...
Thanks for the video! I was able to knock them out with a long punch, big hammer and a little elbow grease. Have you replaced your rear bump stops? Mine are shot, lol.
Worked like a charm!!
Great vid! It's what I gonna do.
thanks for the video helped greatly
Thanks for the help worked perfectly !
No problem Brian
Pretty clever mang!
Dammit, that is a good tip. Thanks dude.
Very helpful! Thanks bro!
Well done!
Thank you! This got it done for me. I never used an air hammer before. It worked out great. Love the wire trick!
SWEET DEAL!! but i will admit.. I WAS ONE OF THE DUMMIES WHO DRILLED AND TAPPED!! LMAO! as far as the bolt spinning a wrench does fit down the frame to hold it down??? that idea with the wire i have used before when helping a friend put a hitch on his truck. GREAT VIDEO!! Thanks for the advice and tips!
my cross member on passenger side is in my hand with shock i sitting in my trunk shall i drill thru floor
oh no ive had them off before a couple times when doing my lift and they come out normal. however this last time one of the nuts stripped, so i kinda just wanna do away with them. i just dont know how to go about getting them out because every method i see the bolts have already broke. im installing BPE's and was just gonna leave the old nuts and drill em out and put new bolts threw the top. is that possible you think?
i wanna do this to my xj only thing is my shock bolts havent broke. would it be fine to just drill the holes out and leave the old nut up in there you think? or should i just still try and knock it out somehow?
Man I hope this works mine broke I'll let you know if it works tomorrow
1.5"+ bolts didnt through the in my 2000 xj because they didnt have enough head room in the little void you're feeding them through. I had to use 1" bolts.
Is this also known as the rear V Spring? When going in for new tires, I was told that they couldn't perform the alignment because the rear V Spring was broken. No clue what that is.
I'm sure it was a royal pita using that wire. Try using an angled box wrench and duct tape, taping the bolt and washers to the wrench and then shove it in there. Try using 1¼ inch if the 1½ won't angle into the hole . Tighten it down before you take the wrench off.
That's a kool how to !
Well good luck Rob, here are a few things to know concerning your rear leaf springs....get prepared to get PISSED OFF!!!! hahaha The front bolt on your leaf springs, are stupid hard to get out. Well at least mine were.
I don't know why but it's funny to me that's an exhaust manifold bolt I've had to do turns of work to my Cherokee when to do the shocks snapped the bolts on one shock drilled and taped it and said screw the other side I don't really need them that bad but now I think I can finish it up plus do my wrangler
Had this happen to me when I was replacing the rear shocks on my 96 XJ. Luckily, I had my uncle there with me who knew how to tap and drill. What could've been a 20 min job turned into a 2 1/2 hour job.
4ace07
Ha ha the same *exact* thing happened to me.
Had problems with the front shocks as well.
NEVER use the word easy when working on vehicles.
Well honestly I would get some PB Blaster and soak them every day for a week for some two times a day, then try and actually get the bolts to come out normal, and If they do replace them with good grade 8 bolts and nuts.
helpful... just broke my bolts. I didn't want to heat them because it was close to the fuel line.
jee2001 dont let that scare u if something bad happens u wont have to worry bout fixing your jeep thats the way i look at it
Hey bigshooter1 glad I could help :)
Thank you!
You just saved me from blowing my brains out all over my shop!!! Pre she ate it!!!
anything in regaurds to how to fix a LOWER shock mount bolt on a xj????
lower front or lower rear, and how is it f'd up?
Were you prior military aviation as well? I've never heard of anybody else on here refer to that wire as safety wire. I was an AD in the Navy.
BuddyLe3 Hey buddy lol, No I wasn't in the military but my dad was retired Airforce of 25 years. He was a Master Sergeant and in charge of the AGE Shop " Air Ground Equipment" I pretty much grew up on the base he was at and picked up a lot of little things like that..I have always know it as safety wire..lol
was easier for me to drill all the way thru up into the cargo area then drill down from inside to clear the bolt head then feed the bolt straight in from the top. couldn't make 1 1/2 inch bolts with the clearance provided by threading from underneath. good video though.
i have to try this, nothing else seems to work. the clearance in awful and anything shorter that 11/2 wont work
Catching my dumb mistake.
HAHAHA thanks Larry :)
Thanks I appreciate it :) if i ever get off my ass I will make more Cherokee videos since I dont drive it any more. If you have anything you would like to see me make a video on let me know :)
Pretty damn good channel you son of a bitch.
Hey StellsBellz FFFFFF ME!! did I say 1/4" wtf yes your right it's not 1/4" and I do believe I used 3/8" dia bolts dammit lol I will find out exactly what I used and make sure to correct that. SORRY GUYS thanks for
Yea I agree I almost tackled mine when I lifted it, but when I ran into those bolts in the front of the spring pack that didnt want to even turn I was like Fuck this!!! They dont make enough beer for this horseshit..lol so I went add a leafs..lol
Or...spray nut with PB Blaster, let soak for 5 min, undo nut with wrench. Avoid all this hassle.
If only it were that easy
