I work in Houston as a repair technician for a subcontractor of Dell that does the repairs that get done when people send in their laptops and desktops. I actually got to get hands on with the XPS 13 7390 2-in-1 today for the first time and i gotta say, damn that thing is gorgeous! All the techs around me that i showed it too were oohing and ahhing. I love the design of it, its basically a macbook without all the garbo that makes apple so bleh. Anyway, if anyone has any questions on how the repair process works and such I'd be happy to answer!

How is the reparability of the 2-in-1? I heard most 2-in-1s are harder to repair than ordinary clamshells

@@caffeinefederation339 it is really not great. We have guys employed by dell in our building that are basically who you take it to when you don't know something, and when the guy first pulled up the tear down diagram that showed the like, 40 screws you have to remove to take the thing apart, he actually said "wow". Keep in mind this is one of the engineers who helps design them xD

@@Admiral__ It has soldered RAM and soldered SSD. ): But hey Garrett here's the questions: What's the solution for someone who has had their XPS 13 2-in-1 die but can't recover the data? Apple actually made a Simpson's reverse flushing toilet to get data from its first soldered-in-place-SSD models. I'm wondering if there is a procedure for it other than: "Well, you had a backup right?"

As a dell xps 15 user myself if your doing any audio work don’t buy any of these the DPC latency issues will mess with all ur interfaces and cause clicks and pops in your audio playback and monitoring. These issues won’t affect general users but those doing any music production and recording will get poor performance from audio devices

From an onwer: If you intend to only game, I agree with whay they say: get a gaming laptop. But if you want to work as well and want only ONE laptop...this thing can game really well, especially if you play some older titles like Overwatch, Dota 2, WoW, Rocket League. I can play all of these in 4k60fps. But also new titles play really well in 1080p. This is perfect for people that want an allrounder with great battery.

Read my review on PCworld.com, particularly the section about gaming with it. Yes, not pretty and I recommend you go with a larger gaming laptop instead. However, I did three long encodes on it, as well as Premiere CC encodes on CPU and GPU. It was difficult to induce throttling with the load I used. Gaming though where you heat up the GPU and CPU at the same time for a couple of hours? Yeah, not pretty. But, I think people have to realize there are limits to putting an 8-core i9 with GTX 1650 in a 4.5 lbs. laptop.
I think for people who care about content creation but do want to keep total weight (brick too) fairly light, it's not a bad choice. Gaming laptops would be the alternative, but then you're talking probably 2 lbs. more total in your bag. www.pcworld.com/article/3438659/review-dells-xps-15-7590-reaches-for-8-cores-of-cpu-power.html

That's an odd config. I do think most normal use, 8GB is fine, but 16GB is preferred today. What's odd is a 6-core part implies you're doing more "work" so, why not also pair it with enough RAM that might be used for more work? I suspect the cynical answer is people will buy on core count because more cores = better and those cores won't actually ever be used. anyway, it depends on what you are doing. If 8GB is enough sure, but then, if you really don't need the core count, why not just save and get an i5 instead?

Although I haven't touched a "10th gen" quad-core Core i7-10510U in the XPS 13 7390, the differences are likely minimal from the Core i7-8565U in the XPS 13 9380. Both are quads with the 10th gen part getting a 300MHz higher turbo. It's likely faster, but the impact is likely to be minimal for most people's needs. I think the appeal of the XPS 13 7390 is mostly for those who need 6-cores for short, bursty workloads. That's my read of the choice anyway.
Check our 10th gen buyer's guide (based on a forecast that's mostly turning out to be true) as well both the CPUs in the laptops: www.pcworld.com/article/3432718/10th-gen-ice-lake-vs-comet-lake-cpu-buyers-guide.html

I think if you're going to do basic, light duty video editing with expectations of it being slower it will work. It won't be fun or great, but it will work. But if you are going to video editing 75% of the time, it's better to have an H-class CPU which can maintain higher clocks since they have more thermals and also have discrete graphics. There is no pen option on the XPS 15 unfortunately so not sure if that'll work. I guess it just depends on what you're willing to live with.

Both the 4K IPS and HD IPS panels seem to have excellent gamut and calibration out of the box, as well as brightness, so either would be fine as long as you're ok with the resolution. Personally, I don't find resolution to be that important in terms of working on graphics, but it can make life easier to be able to fit more on the screen in the native resolution. Because of the panel's 16:9 aspect ratio, you should be able to bring the resolution down without black bars (you could use 2560x1440, for instance).
In my opinion, the 4K IPS (non-OLED) panel is probably the best as a result. The HD panel is good from the reviews I've read, but the flexibility you can get at 4K (the ability to change the resolution to what you want, whether higher or lower.

We have not reviewed the Surface Pro 7 yet but for performance: XPS 13 2-in-1 because it's not a tablet design. Most tablet designs can't compete with 360 designs because they typically have less space for cooling etc. Keyboard/Trackpad: well, that's a toss up. I'm not a huge fan of the maglev 2 keyboard AND I love Microsoft's keyboards and trackpads. They're the best out if you ask me. I can't speak to screen quality as Microsoft typically uses very nice panels in Surface--but the XPS 13 2-in-1 is quite gorgeous too. For 360 vs. detachable? I was a fan of Surface Pro for a while as it has phenomenal weight/performance/capability but I'd take a 360 design over detachable design any day now. I just rarely used it in tablet mode and the awkward lap use is really kind of a pain. TLDR; both are perfectly reasonably fast platforms for what you're going to do. You should probably pick on price, form factor that works for you.

I have not used Luminar but they recommend 7th gen i7 (so quad-core on a desktop) and discrete graphics. It sounds like there's a lot of GPU acceleration in it, so my guess the 10th gen 10nm "Ice Lake" Core i7-1065G7 would perform better. It is Intel's newest core and has new instructions, and despite its lower clocks, actually performs very well. The 10th gen 14nm "Comet Lake" Core i7-10710U is really the same thing, but six core.
I don't know if Luminar is multi-threaded or not, but if it is the 6-cores might yield better performance. The problem is the GPU in the Comet Lake chip is the same old, same old. If it does lean on the GPU more, i'd say the the 2-in-1 is the right choice. of course an XPS 15 7590 with 6-core Core i7-9750H and GTX 1650 is probably going to be faster, but not exactly light.

All 3 should support eGPU at this point (although I have not tested it some time since it's assumed to work.. With an eGPU, all should be fine for gaming. Remember: there is loss of performance from Thunderbolt 3 and a U-class CPU will give up clocks too. But enough to really matter? I don't think so. The XPS 15 will yield the best performance and since it's running an external GPU, and you move the thermals out of the chassis so the CPU can run at higher clocks. But again: if you're looking at 90 percent gaming, desktop or dedicated gaming laptop would be a better choice. But if you mean, maybe 75 percent work, 25% gaming or 60/40, not a problem at all with a good eGPU I'd bet. (actually, just confirmed in the control center for the XPS 15 that it supports eGPU. It does.) At this point, I'd imagine most are supporting it.

I've never seen an instance of a customer having replaced the ram or drive causing a voided warranty, unless they somehow stabbed a whole through the motherboard, in which case if they don't have accidental damage coverage they get contacted and requoted for the cost of the accidental damage.

Dell needs to update the chassis for the XPS line. This is the 4th year for this current models. It's getting old!

Actually, it's only been since January of 2018 for this current chassis. 9370 had quad Kaby Lake R, added more cooling and deleted the USB Type A. They took the 9370, dropped in a Whiskey Lake U (not exactly a big deal) in the 9380 and then with the model you see here, introduced a 6-core Comet Lake version in the--wait for it--XPS 13 7390. So, it's actually not that old but it''ll probably get a respin pretty soon I guess.

Gordon Ung Hey Gordon! I didn’t think you would actually reply to my comment. I’m a big fan of the channel. I was referring to the general look of the chassis since the 9550 and not the internals. They’ve made minor changes annually but I’m not a fan of that fake carbon fiber look. Btw it’s annoying with the model numbers too. How did they go from 9550 to 7590 now? That makes no sense.

Buying Dell 9560 with top specs was the worst decision I'v ever made on laptops - and I've bought almost like a dozen in the last decade.. Very unstable performance, 3 battery replacements in 3 years.... Never Dell for me again. And more over - searching for the battery problem just recently I realized that the problems have not yet been fixed even for newer models. And Dell techs claim that 1 year is a normal life span for a battery? Tell it to my ASUS battery with 5+ years and 89% battery still available for long long hours.

Sorry man. Everyone makes lemons. I have an Asus laptop with a dead batter after 2 years and same with others too. It happens. The good news is with PC--you can give your money to another brand the next time. It's the only way to do it.

Wil 3D Cad work on the xps13

Sorry, can't tell you hard numbers, but I would assume beefier visualization apps need beefier graphics so 2-in-1 or XPS 15 with dGPU and with a buttload of memory and fast storage. Depending on plugins, you might hit more core usage, but typically these apps are not very well optimized for core counts.

Read our review. If you hammer GPU and CPU, it can fall off the cliff, but we ran back to back to back to back encode tests on GPU and CPU and experienced no major performance degradations. But yes, the laws of physics apply. A sub 5 lbs. XPS 15 will not outperform a 9 lbs. gaming laptop. As to the XPS 13 with Comet Lake U--read our review. It's best confined to burst performance no, it won't outperform a 6-core H part, but it DOES equal or best H-class 7, 8 and 9th gen quad parts. I can confirm the caps lock key works.
