A video on things not to waste time on would be great! Also, how to source accommodation other than Airbnb. Any scams you came across would be interesting too. Great videos and thanks.

Hi Niel & Sarah. We are a 50+ couple who loves to travel. We love your videos. We are planning for a 50/50 type of travelling. We have grown- up kids and have a house in Norway who is payed off. We will wait until we have 600 000 NOK (50 000 £) in our index fond. We would like to have 3 - 4 trips pr. year and 3 - 4 weeks at a time. Then we can still have our house and are close to family.

Neil & Sarah, we all love you and your videos because you are unique. I’ve watched many, many videos on UA-cam and none come as close to your style of presentation.
For those of us that have travelled a bit as tourists,we understand some of the experiences and feelings that you have come across. After the tertiary education,TRAVELLING is the next best thing any individual can add to their general knowledge and acceptance of one another no matter where in the world.

      Hey Alex!
Really appreciate the comment, that is pretty incredible for us to read. Imposter Syndrome is a real thing for us and we are almost always disappointed with our videos until the comments come in. That is though a good thing, because we always want to do better and we will. A real rollercoaster ride.
You are so right, traveling is the best all round education. Thanks for the kind words Alex!
      Best regards,

This is why I love your videos: you always give me something to think about. Richard and I have been talking a lot lately about whether or not slow travel is truly for us. We're just not sure and watching your videos has contributed to our uncertainty: and that's a GOOD thing. We need your first person perspective to help us make the decision to take the leap (or not). I want to thank you for your honesty. Unlike some videos I've watched you don't shy away from talking about the difficulties of full time slow travel and make it seem all sunshine and roses. I feel like we're on this journey with you and we didn't have to leave the comfort of home. : )

    • @2GoRoam

      Hey Mel!
That's really cool of you to say. We do worry to an extent as we really want to entertain in our videos while giving information but there are some things that we feel have to be said, to provide balance.
The key point in this video for us is the very last point.... This lifestyle just feels so right for us. But it isn't perfect of course.
      Thanks as ever!
      Best wishes

Stay well and healthy and keep inspiring people that life is more colourful when you step out of routine.

Neil & Sarah! We've watched every one of your videos over the past year, and we have to say that you knocked it out of the park with this one! As we prepare for our own nomadic life, your resoucefulness, honesty, good humour and relatability continue to wow us. Keep up the great work! We hope to cross paths one day :-)

That video you mentioned about all the things you wasted time on when preparing to travel would be useful! I find the planning of a big trip quite challenging (which country or city to visit, where to stay when you get there, insurance, what trips within the country etc etc). So tips on what to focus on and what not to would be great!

You asked about routine - I used to travel a lot (work related). I developed a kind of mental checklist for when arriving at a new location. The checklist let me establish a routine really quickly. It went like this: 1. where to do laundry, 2. a place to have breakfast, 3. nearest supermarket (not convenience shop)with veggies and fresh milk for my protein shakes, 4. nearest subway station, which tickets do I need and a timetable for getting where I need to go, 5. ... you get the idea.

Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment! Yes that is all a really good idea, I think that what we tend to do is get somewhere, get excited then any plan of routine goes out of the window for the first week or two. :-)

Everything you said! Except for the routine, just about everything you listed can apply generally to expat life and super slow travel as well. The biggest difference for us is having time to make lovely new friends along the way who often understand our lives better than friends and family back home who have chosen more traditional paths. Happy one year anniversary!! Really looking forward to hearing how your finances worked out in your first year!

Great to be seeing the streets of the old city again! I also loved the vibe at night with all the market stalls and the friendliness of the locals. You were very close to the outdoor food market! Relating to the negative of missing family and friends and being so far away when traumatic things happen "back home", that unfortunately is true for all travel. The text we received from our son with the title in all caps "DON"T PANIC" when we had just arrived for a week of vacation travel in the UK, was most distressing. Fortunately friends were able to help us out and everything turned out well. Wonderful video!! Always important to be aware of the pro's and con's of travel especially when we are getting the scoop from two PROS! Thank you!

My wife and I are planning a second trip to Portugal. This time in addition to mainland Portugal we are going to see Madeira and decide if we want to retire there but we also like the idea of slow travel thanks to your fantastic channel. The two of you are not only great guides who offer practical tips but also come across as very nice genuine people. I would love to start a travel channel myself and if it's half as entertaining and helpful as yours I will consider it a huge success. Oh, and yes can't wait for you to put out a video on all the things you have wasted your time on. Take care and God Bless.

      Hey CTFG!
Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment! We dream of visiting Madeira, we have visited the mainland a few times but that island seems to have it all. We seriously considered settling in Portugal before thinking about this slow travel lifestyle, the way we see it is, maybe we will settle in Portugal once we finish our travels.
As for starting a channel, go for it! There is a lot of moving parts to get it working but you will have your own unique voice and that can't be replicated by anyone. If you ever want to discuss it, let us know.

I have been a nomad for 3.5 years and I too zipped around as fast as you guys are doing it but about a year and a half ago I slowed it down. As an example, I have been in this seaside city in southern Mexico for about a year and I like it even more. I go off and explore another region and then come back to this furnished apartment I am renting and I am forming deeper relationships with the people and the place and nature in ways I didn't even know were possible. It is also even cheaper! Oh and now, friends and family can join me and they get to explore and travel very cheaply and I get to see them. By the way, I only spent $564 USD for EVERYTHING last month. I know my apartment is a bit more than I need since it has 3 bedrooms but that means a family of 4 can join me if they like. I also have found that eating a vegan diet keeps my food costs very small and it is not limiting since every region of the world has a different way of cooking and different spices and flavors. I will subscribe to your channel and see how your journey goes. Onward bound.

Well Stan is in for some fun on the road lol. One thing that we brought with us was a small knife sharpener rather than bringing a knife (that we know others that do this choose to do), with a knife sharpener we have found we have brought the dullest knifes back to work easily and yes, they start to blunt again pretty quickly but that is when we are moving on so all good.

Hi Neil and Sara, Congratulations on achieving 1 year on the road! I watched by UA-cam “coincidence” your first video just yesterday. Contrasting the level of serenity and call it sparkle in both your faces, I am guessing you would have scored your previous life something like 3-8 on these measures as most people in a routine (rut for many) might. You have also mentioned that you intend to go back to many of these places which will make that feel more like a routine and a positive. You will know the lay of the land and might even start to develop some good local friends (imagine renting a place for two months in the South of Italy with a couple extra bedrooms and sending out invites to family and friends). I have been traveling the world since a young age and being somewhere else is routine. I feel immediately at ease even in a totally new space - it’s not to brag but having lived, worked and studied on four different continents with more years in the US than anywhere else and still calling myself a Scot defines me as will your travels. Routine will improve eating habits - probably already have just from leaving the UK! Keep up the great work! Cheers, Rod

The family and friends part reminded me of myself. I served in the US Air Force for 20 years. So I moved about every 3 or 4 years. My family and friends back home had no concept of my life. And I also had no concept of their life. This was in the years before the internet. Staying in touch was thru snail mail or an expensive phone call. Leaving family or friends can bring on resentment from the ones left behind. The ones leaving are going into the unknown. Wide open to a new place with new experiences. The ones left behind know what they are going to do. Because they have been doing it already. The idea that you could or would want to live some where else in the world is a foreign idea. Vacation yes, but move? We moved from LA to Southport, UK 15 years ago. Both English people and Americans ask us if we would consider moving back.

As you so eloquently point out, there are quite a few inconveniences/negatives to a life of full time travel and constantly moving. It needs to be said and we are grateful for your honesty... unlike many of the "influencers" out there. In our opinion, the positives you point out, combined with the wonderful experiences, knowledge, and personal growth we gain as a result of this lifestyle far outweighs the negatives. We know you feel the same and grateful to have gotten to know you as a result of the lifestyle... just another item to put in the positive category. BTW, thanks for the lovely tour around Chiang Mai Old City. It looks so peaceful that time of day. We look forward to being there.

Funny we did actually refer to you in the first cut of this video as you were the opposite to us. Thinking of the experience in SMA, you guys were in the markets and preparing food at home in a way that we just struggled with (which wasn't the case in our old life, I was all about batch cooking and process) so we need to improve and you two are who we are following on that.

I'm six months behind you WRT full-time travel, so have less experience. I completely agree with you about minimalism - I feel so free with very few things (literally and figuratively) weighing me down. One con on my list that you don't have is the amount of money I'm spending on airbnbs for places that are just okay. I'm sure that's because I've done 2/3 United States so far.

The story at minute 16 or so was the most impactive story. I retired as a Dutchmen in the Philippines with a loving set of kids and family. Every year I try to be back for a couple of weeks but as you say you live and stay with family and miss "your own". Eventhough the family is welcoming and all the feeling is you are not in your own place. And is a weird feeling. So I would rate going back on the road as a positive. At least you live your own life. In fact your family and kids moved on with their lives as they should. But coming home it is almost like you have to make appointments with your own kids and family to get together

The building a routine 'problem' is soooo true!
We also have a problem finding budget accommodation well located (at least in a secure neighborhood) for longer period, but not long enough to do a year contract on an unfurnished apartment and buy furniture.

    • @2GoRoam
      @2GoRoam  2 роки тому +1

      Hey Isabelle!
Really appreciate the comment, yes accommodation is getting tricky but I think that is down to current market pressures and reality will kick in at some point. I see it this way, no travel for so long for us all, meaning that airbnb's hosts and other establishments have gone with little or no income. They are looking to build their income quick at just the time when the whole world is saying "Lets travel!" so supply and demand is pushing in all directions.
      Normality will prevail.

I would love for Sarah to do something in finding personal services. We have already communicated about hair, as I, too, have short highlighted hair. We women who do have to have services on a regular basis. Yet you are traveling in foreign countries, sometimes with an insurmountable barrier, and yet her hair always looks great! I know Neil might not be able to relate; I believe your talented wife is doing your hair. Don’t think she’d allow you to do hers😂

      Hey Kimberly!
Well RnG said it perfectly. We know the feeling all too well. We were not going to start traveling until our little girl passed on (at the age of 19), it was so sad and bitter sweet. We knew that we could move on with our new lives but at the same time she left a gaping hole in our lives. We were watching some UA-camrs this week that travel with two cats and Sarah just said out loud to herself "I miss our Cinder." and we do. We miss having our cats around us.... That would be a negative of this lifestyle but to put that in a video would only set us up for ridicule I think. If we could travel with cats we would be in heaven.

As a 2 year slow traveler, the only thing I really miss is my own kitchen. I still cool when we are traveling because it allows us to control our nutrition. As far as routine, we are huge walkers and continue to walk 5-6 miles a day even in hot locales like Merida and Spain right now 🥵. We both carry stretch bands and do core training so we can stay in shape while slow living. Enjoyed this video!

I can certainly empathise with you on leaving family and friends to follow your dream. I left Scotland 35 years ago to go immigrate to Australia. I met and married an Australian and at that time the technology was not available to contact family daily. Phone calls were so expensive. I ensure I go back to Scotland every 2 years to see my family and they in turn have come out to Australia (not as many times as I have gone over to Scotland). Life goes on for you and for them. I'm sure many of them will be catching up on what you are up to via your UA-cam videos. I feel I tend to make keeping in touch a priority and it is expected, given I am the one to leave Scotland I should be the one doing the contact. I am at peace with this now, it really doesn't matter who instigates the contact it's just important that you maintain it. My husband and I spent a month in Thailand and did a stay with the Karen tribe north of Chang Mai, wonderful experience. We then went from the mountains to Koh Samui on the coast for a lovely relaxing end to our stay. Wishing you both well, you are doing a tremendous job sharing your travels, look forward to your next destination.

Would love to know if you travelled to anywhere so far you can imagine living long term, and which are your top 3 fav places so far. Yes would love to see a video that explains the things you thought were important to pack, but in hindsight, weren’t. All the best Ian

the institutions point!! in my experience, I've found that at some point, the calls just dry up. I haven't had one in years. I know exactly what you mean about the short silence and the 'oh, you're not in the UK?' as if it's the strangest thing someone has ever said! I even tried to register for a Covid vaccine but my details had disappeared from my old GP and my ID check was declined when I tried to log in to the NHS site. I no longer exist!
Re food, I have been diabolical, especially when in a quite intense travel period. I actually breathe a sigh of relief when I book a place for a month. I make a concerted effort to go to the supermarket on day 1 and force myself to buy basics like eggs, pasta, tuna etc and stuff I can make meals with. Covid! I actually had no problems at all. So many UA-camrs 'went home' in March 2020, I just continued with minimal issue. I didn't have a Covid test until late 2021 and went to countries which didn't require a test or vaccine (I simply couldn't get a vaccine anywhere without being a citizen and it was too complex to reenter the UK, in the end I managed it in Ukraine in Dec 21).
Re time going slower, I definitely felt the same in the first 2 years especially, having come away from the treadmill as you say! However, after that, I realised things started to go as quickly because travel became my 'routine'.
Living with less is 100% the best. Minimalism is the way forward!
    GREAT STUFF GUYS!! LOVE IT!

I can relate to the question “how do you stay healthy on the road”….it’s a really tough thing to do because you want to try out all those new foods and restaurants plus you want to treat yourselves to more than the odd cake.
Combine that with being in hot countries where it’s often too hot to go out exercising and it’s not exactly a recipe for good health ( not to mention the obligatory beer at the end of the day !)
I always returned from a long trip significantly chubbier than when we left, I have a great picture of me and my ex-wife exposing our bellies, we were 14 months into a trip around Asia and we had to cut it short as she was 7 months pregnant with our son…looking at the picture you’d swear I was 7 months pregnant too!
Let us us know if you crack the code to being healthy and travelling!

Hey guys! Love your channel. We've been full time traveling since Feb 2021. Left the USA and have visited 14 other countries. For staying healthy, we basically walk everywhere and eat at home 2 meals a day. We always rent apartments and ensure we have a kitchen, with at least a stovetop and pots and pans. We usually eat breakfast (where we have oatmeal) and lunch at the house where we have a bunch of vegetables. Then we just eat one meal out for dinner which isn't too bad. Good for the budget and when you walk several miles exploring each day you can easily burn thay one meal off.

Some days only manage 2 meals which is good for the budget and since I prefer vegetables good for health too

RnG & Wity, have to say one of the best hacks we have made is that we only eat two meals a day, that gives us a lot of benefit, such as not being tied down to a schedule but also maintaining a good weight. Then there is the cost saving!

    Another informative video!
After watching it, it seems as though your positive and negatives aren’t really so different than a ‘normal’ life. The great part is that y’all have CHOSEN this life and I feel that makes all the negatives worth every minute (and then some) for all the positives.
I got tickled when you were talking about routines. Even though you say you would like to have a better routine, it appears you have a new normal routine. It just might not look like what you thought it would. 😉
I guess we will be a little more prepared for the missing friends and family part. We have moved a LOT in our 42+ years of marriage, and many of those were to places where we had no family or friends there. Of course we miss them, but it has become part of our normal routine to not see them very often. The hardest part is missing our grandchildren, but we don’t get to see them very often now, either. This year, so far, we have only seen them once (for one day), which breaks our hearts, however, I prefer to think of it as good training for when we start traveling, and ultimately retire in a foreign country.
After watching all your videos, I’m still convinced that slow travel positives far outweigh the negatives.
Btw…..enjoyed getting to see more of Chang Mai! Beautiful location. 😁
Looking forward to your next video. ❤️

      Hey Lorrie!
Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment as ever!
Firstly... the positives do totally outweigh the negatives, of that we are 100% certain of for us. Yes that is a good position to be in where you have moved a lot, it makes you more self reliant and for people around you to not over-rely on you. A good balance to be in. Very sorry about you not getting to see grandchildren, that must be tough. I guess that is where technology can help to a small extent?
      Best regards,
