All ports should be connected to the freight corridor with separate tracks

WDFC is already connected to Kandla and Mundra ports from New Palanpur. After completion, JNPT will also be connected.

Great video! I got a few questions: 1. What is the last wagon on each freight train for? There seem to be people on board, and once it looks like the guy is about to unfold a flag? 2. Why do the locos often have some kind of flags hanging out their windows? What is that for? 3. Why are they always using their horn so massively? Makes it extremely loud for people living close to the tracks. Many thanks in advance!

The last compartment of the goods train is called Good Guard, there is a railway employee in it, his job is to take care of the goods train, if there is any problem in the goods train, he shows a red flag so that the station master stops the train. If everything is correct then loco pilot, station master and goods guard show green flags to each other. By the way, these three also have walkie talkies to contact, but if they do not work in an emergency, then these green and red flags are useful, they are used only during the day. For the night all three have red and green torch lights instead of flags.

@@nishantmeena57 thanks for the quick answer! Seems a little bit old fashioned with the flags, but I get the point. And why do the loco drivers always honk so much?

@@munsterrail safety measures. Indian Rialways have a system where loco driver may get penalised if they don't honk in a certain interval. Honking frequency increases near platform, crossings. People living near railway platform are used to it. Maybe everywhere else they do noise complaints because cultural difference. There is also right of passage for railways where railway will always have some amount of land dedicated to them where private construction is not allowed. Only in very older sections where this rule is not implemented, you can see houses right beside railway tracks, or if the land is illegally encroached.

      1. The last wagon is the Guard Van (Caboose in US). This is where the train 'Guard' is posted. He is the overall commander of the train. The driver is actually expected to obey his instructions. This job and the wagon may become redundant soon as Indian Railways is evaluating some electronic devices which can be fit to the last wagon.
      2. The flags hanging out scenario. This is actually a flag being waved by the driver. In Indian Railways the train driver and the guard is supposed to exchange flag signals (in night, light signals) with track side staff such as station masters, gate keepers and maintenance gangs.
      3. In Indian Railways the drivers have instructions when to sound horn/whistle. Long whistles/horns are given when crossing a railway platform non-stop, when approaching level crossings, tunnels etc.

Looks like there is a shortage of electric engines. GE diesel locos are still being used despite electrification.
