- Don't let your SCOBY fool you ever again. I have lots of pictures to share where people thought they had mold on their kombucha SCOBY but they actually didn't. In this video, I'll go over the 4 most common pictures I receive on Instagram asking if it's mold.

I have no words to thank you for your many examples of a healthy scoby. I received a factory scoby with 2 cups of starter (tastes almost like vinegar). It came under high temperatures. Outside was 99° F, and I guess inside the mail car and warehouses, it was way above that. It traveled for 4 days (under extremes). I was worried it could be dead. It has been in 75 - 79° in my house. I took pictures everyday for 9 days. A new scoby formed with "all sort of weird stuff". It has a combination of almost all pictures you showed. It even formed big, big bubbles in some areas (3"x2"). Now I know it's healthy. I can send you pictures, but it looks like a weird combo of bubbles (many sizes), white and brown stuff, and dangling lines. Thanks. 👍 This is the very best video for new brewers worried about weird looking scobies.
Hi Liz, this was for sure the most helpful video on Kombucha vs. mold. Thank you for putting all the photos together and making this video. Love and appreciate the help very much!!
Hello Czech. Thank you so much for leaving this comment. It truly means so much to me. I love helping people with something I'm so passionate about- Kombucha. You are very welcome :)
This is the video i needed to see. Growing my first scoby from scratch. Thank you!
Finally i found this, thank you so much for this video ❤
Literally I had the example you had ❤ Thank you for the video
Awesome. Another brew saved 👌 💛
Ok, I was on my way to flush my brew and scoby down the toilet but I decided to watch one more video about mold, and it looks like my brew is totally fine!
Thank you so much for showing detailed photos. My very first one I threw out thinking it was not living anymore.
You're welcome
Thanks so much for the photo examples. This really helped.
You're welcome 😊
Hi Liz, thank you for the photos. They are most helpful.
❤you're welcome
Thank you, this is awesome!
😃😃😃 you're welcome. If you still need help feel free to send me a dm on ig ☀️☀️
Just scooped out some scoby that I thought was mold😊. Thank you for the great videos, informative and straight to the point!
😀😀 you're welcome
Thank You So Much!
😊😊😊
Thank you so much for sharing this information.
You are very welcome 🌞🧡
Idk why i tried to make kombucha there is a thin layer floating in my kombucha but my scoby is drowned in the bottom of my jar and there is a dark lump floating on top of my scoby
All that is normal. The dark lump is yeast thin layer is new scoby
I've been fortunate to never have any mold so far. Wow I think it's been two years now since I started!!
Wow, 2 years already? Time flies. 💜🦄 So happy to hear you've never had mold 😃
Awesome. Appreciate all the photos. Thanks
Thanks for the video. I was worried but good to know it's all good!
i ignore my kombucha is the best quote
If you think you start to see something that could be mold, just give it time. If it is mold it will quickly enter into a reproductive stage where you will see spores form that give mold it’s typical fuzzy look.
Thank you, that helped a lot!
You're welcome 😊☺🙂
Love your videos
Pamela, you just totally made my day ❤️❤️❤️ thank you. So glad you're finding value 😀😀😀
@@KombuchaLiz you are the best dear, am also a kombucha brewer and I actually started this practice two weeks ago, and this video was really helpful! Keep the momentum up.
Thank you 😊 💓
Thank you! My SCOBY has been looking weird, kind of bubbly looking with some whiter spots. I was worried it was mold, but it looks exactly like some of the ones you showed an I think it's ok. Would have been a shame to toss it since its very active
I am so glad you watched the video before tossing it out. I think the SCOBY is a little jokster playing tricks on people. Happy brewing 🍻
Thank you!
You're welcome 😊 I have a couple more videos on mold. One shows how the scoby tricks us into thinking it's mold.
Thank god for this video
Hallo sorry for bothering I don’t know if my kombucha is doing well i started brewing recently and gave one of the new scoby’s to my aunt because of the health benefits. It looks like its forming a blister ontop, how will i be able to sent you how looks because i am unsure ❤
@kombuchaLIZ I’m making kombucha for the first time and think I may have mold but I’m not sure it is brown and fuzzy on the surface don’t look like traditional mold but I’m not sure if it’s safe
I am so sorry. Did you touch it and it feels dusty or fuzzy? Sometimes yeast can get trapped under the new forming scoby and it can appear as mold.
Thank you this was great!
I thought my scoby was moldy but like you said it was just bubbles!!
How can I make dog treats with the scoby?
Hello 🌞 I am so happy you found this useful. Yeah those bubbles are tricky 😆 I know you can make scoby treats for dogs but I've never made them. You could probably soak the scoby in flavors that are safe for pups then dehydrate using the oven on a low temp. 😉
What will happen if i drink a moldy kombucha accidentally?
Thank you so much. I was having bubles on the surface and was about to throw it out. Such a relief!
😃😃 you're welcome. Glad you caught it in time.
Hi Liz, if at all your kambucha gets mold, is there a chance for the mold to go away if you keep the brew for another month or so ? I'm asking this because as I was preparing new batch, just after 7days, some brown yellowish powder formed on the top, Ithought it was spoiled n just forgot to throw it away, after 1 month I noticed that the scoby was white n it looked nice n good.
I guess it is possible. You could throw out the moldy SCOBY and just see what happens to the new one. From my understanding, the mold never actually reaches the kombucha. Only certain types of mold can be in liquid. Most need air.
If there is no mold and no bad smell you could give it a taste OR start a new batch and see what happens.
thank you
😁you're welcome
Oh my God!!! I just threw the white spots on the surface thinking they were molds 😢 i hope my scoby forgives me as a newbie mama brewer😭
Ok i need help! now I've tried twice to make kombucha without success. First time I did not have a proper cover ans fruit flies got into it. Now is my second time and no scoby formed on top, and there's a small ( seem top be) mold spot on it. The original scoby is sunk at the bottom. It smells good. What am I doing wrong??
Can you send me a photo on ig? Often times it's not mold. Touch the spot. If it's smooth it's scoby. Mold will.be dusty or fuzzy.
A baby doesn't always grow. That can take a couple batches
Hello ! Is white fluff considered mold ?
Is it hairy dusty or fuzzy? If yes then it's mold. Mold is always on top of the scoby.
@@KombuchaLiz it’s kind of hairy and white . In circles like spots . Not in the whole surface!
R u telling me i threw away my scoby baby for nth 😢😢😢
😢😢
I have question do i need to close it with lids seal tight or with cloth on top and tie with rope or rubberband... ?
It depends on what ferment you are doing. 1st ferment (when you turn the sweet tea into Kombucha) just use a cloth with rubber band.
For the 2nd ferment close it off to air with a lid.
@@KombuchaLiz if i use cloth ..will the air outside ...make the tea ..become bad../ kambucha scoby become moldy ..or not ?? I first time made it....i put scoby and sweet tea...and close it with tight seal lids...
@@esdest it needs air for the ferment. Keep the jar away from other foods like fruit and the trash can.
I have some other good videos about mold so give them a watch
🙏💜
photo's ar not clear at all. Cant see if my scoby looks like any of these scoby.
You can send me a photo on IG if you'd like
My scoby is dark, is it dead ?? Someone said no and another one said yes. Its still producing bubbles and a baby scoby. Hm
@Kastakniv without seeing it I would say it's still good. If you are using black tea and you've used that scoby more than a few times it's normal
@KombuchaLiz Yes black tea. Is there any chance I could send picture to you somewhere?🙈
@KombuchaLiz I also got it from a woman who use black tea, but my friends isn't as dark? Her scoby is quite young, she got a lil baby
Hi! New sub here! 👋🏽 AND first time brewer. Thank you for the content. I started my SCOBY using a bottle of plain GT's and organic tea. After about 2-3 weeks, I had a mother. In my excitement, I sort of moved her around with a silicone kitchen tool while she was still in the jar. She fell to the bottom of the jar, and now, a couple more weeks later, I have another SCOBY that actually looks much better than the original mother. Is this normal? Could I have accidentally produced two SCOBYs?
Hello and welcome to the family 😊 Yes its Normal. The scoby is made up mostly of cellulose which is a byproduct of the fermenting process. Any time the scoby is moved from the top a new one will begin to form. You can use both of those if you want
@@KombuchaLiz Awesome. Thank you, Liz! 😊 🙏🏿
You're very welcome. Happy brewing 💜
