    A tip I learned to not lose any kombucha while letting pressure release is to put a ziplock baggie over the top of the battle before opening while placing the whole bottle into a clean bowl to catch the overspill. Works great and no loss!!

    As a "newbie", I've just harvested my 6th batch of "booch and flavoring each batch has been just as exciting as being able to make my own at home. My latest flavoring concoctions came from my rhubarb harvest that I turned into "rhubarb tea". I used a combination of the rhubarb tea and strawberry jam for 2 batches and I plan to use more rhubarb tea with apple cider for the next batch.
    Here in Alaska, I will soon have a harvest of lingon berries (similar in taste to cranberries) and rose hips that will be used as flavorings in future batches also. As you pointed out this is really simple and fun when you explore the ingredients that are all around you. Thanks for sharing your tips!

    So, Im from Bulgaria and live in Austria. People in foreign countries dont use the herb Satureja. Neither for food nor to spice up their lifes in general, whilst we Bulgarians love yoghurts and satureja. So going the next step into probiotics to Kombucha was an easy step. I made some following your tip with the 1/4 spoon spice and added Satureja and boy do all my relatives and friends love some carbonated satureja kombucha.

    I've replayed the 1st few seconds over & over. I saw a floating thingy moving in the center of the jar! Making this is like being in science class again. I've grown a scoby...yay! I'm here to get flavoring tips. I tried a molasses, ginger store bought flavored kombucha (it was delish). I had some leftover molasses & wanted to know if I could use that for my flavored kombucha as a sugar to feed off of? Do you get the carbonation from the original brew or the flavored only? I haven't tried the original bc I'm new to this. Thank you😊

    Excellent tutorial, thank you! I would caution re second fermentation in a mason jar, please ensure it's pressure safe, not all of them are. Also, for first time fermenters, take it easy, start off with a shot glasses instead of big glasses, it takes your system some getting used to, as home brew is said to be more potent than store bought.

    • @homemadeonourhomestead
      @homemadeonourhomestead  Рік тому +2

      Hi there! Thanks for the question. Sometimes using a mix of green tea and black tea helps with color. Using only green tea will also keep the scoby lighter. My Scobys get dark the older they are. The more batches they have brewed and the more times they have sat in a black tea mixture the darker they get (I have found). I use my scobys 2-3 times before they are repurposed so they tend to stay very light.

      1. Yes you can put the liquid back into the scoby hotel.
      2. As long as it’s above 40-50 degrees you can make kombucha. Lower temps just will take longer to ferment and produce a new scoby but it’s still possible.

In how many days do you guess it will ferment? Everybody makes apple cider veniger in 3 months I also make it in 3 days. I just exract the apple juice and add sugar ground wheat and chickpeas and put it in yoghurt machine in 3 days there will be a layer of mother of veniger on the top which shows I have achieved it

    I'm wondering how all of that fruit is removed from the bottle. It looks like it'd be extremely difficult with the small opening. I've never used whole fruit for this very reason.

      I was wondering the same,😂😂 until I did my first kombucha. I realized you actually easily get it out since it softens during the fermentation!!😊

    Why do I not want to put frozen fruit to my kombucha?

    • @homemadeonourhomestead
      @homemadeonourhomestead  2 роки тому

      I have heard that doing so can shock it therefore it won’t ferment the same.
      I have tried it once, didn’t feel like the results were as good either. Better fruit flavor when fruit is fresh. But it’s personal preference

    Having done an extensive amount of research on brewing kombucha - you are setting people up for failure with a few things in this video.....
    Don't fill the bottles all the way, you need headspace for the carbonation. Secondly, you should NOT be using mason jars, they aren't rated for the pressure of the kombucha carbonation, and more likely will lead to shattered and exploding jars.
