I did a big "experiment" on my good old Fender Stratocaster. I was really afraid how it will turn out and if I will be happy with the results... I decided to put Stainless Steel frets on it... Well, check this video out to see how it ended. 😎 Leave your thoughts on this mod below and if you have any experiences with these kind of fret materials, comment below.
There’s a harshness to the stainless steel frets. I want to like stainless steel frets for their longevity, but the tone takes a hit. Thank you for the video! This has helped me a lot.
Nickel was more harmonically rich and sang more in the midrange. Steel sounded beefier but brighter at the same time. More scooped sound, clearer sound.
Actually, the guy who plek'd it set the strings way too low on the neck. And because I like to play with attacking harder the strings, that was not what I was used to, so after filming this video I raised the string height a little. The result was noticable in the sound too, somehow the midrange and roundness came back. Still a bit brighter than the nickel, but the difference is much much smaller now.
I PREFER MUCH BETTER THE NICKEL FRETS NOT BECAUSE STAINLESS STEEL ARE BRIGHTER, IS BECAUSE SS FRETS HAVE MORE TRANSIENTS AND THE SOUND DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE BODY OF THE SOUND AND THE ATTACK IS BIGGER, YOU FEEL MORE ATTACK AND TRANSIENTS THAN BODY NOW! IS NOT JUST BRIGHTNESS
