Your triad pair method that you have been demonstrating has become an endless source of inspiration for me! Triad pairs give me so much to play over chords rather than just using chord-scales. I feel I can finally make emotional decisions about the sounds I am making which is huge! Your content in particular has set my musical mind on a course to connect my emotions to my music and use them as my guide. Thank you so much for sharing in the way that you do!!

Yes! In his bio, Nick says that he wants to put out a pedagogy that makes learning faster, fun, and more meaningful. I think this is a wonderful way to make the transition from thinking in notes to thinking in cords, as well as getting "outside" to think non-diatonically (accidentals, outside of the scale). His prices are low enough to make his practice books pretty much an impulse buy. I love how he establishes a pattern that is recognizable, and then launches it repeatedly from various points so that you know in advance what notes you are reaching for. This really builds intuitive playing. The PATA workbooks are a great example of this patterned approach (unlike typical etudes), but with more abstract learning goals (Norbert Stein). Those are also full of great workouts.

You really are great at creating melodies with the triad pairs. My playing always sounds too much like patterns than melodies when I play triad pairs. I play guitar and I need to focus more on the fluidity of my lines, better rhythmic phrasing and more spacing.

Nice! The effect is truely beautiful, focusing on color. Like Ragas I guess.
Each of these combinations become sextatonic modes, built by the combination of two triads. The choice of triad pair is based on personal choice for expression and one might find that they create sextatonic modes. Hundreds of possibilities.
On a bass drone of Cm, playing triads Cm and D combined, we hear these notes against the drone:
    1. C - Eb - G
    2. D - F# - A
Which gives a sextatonic mode of Cm with : 1 - 9 - b3 - #11 - 5 - 6 . We might see it as Dorian #11 (without the 7) ? A beautiful sound from the mix of the Dorian and Lydian. A kind of minor lydian.
    Or the combination of F and G triads over Cm which gives the sextatonic mode C m/M : 11 - 5 - 6 - 7 - 1 - 9 : Quartal no 3rd
    1. F - A - C
    2. G - B - D
I'm curious to read what you think.

    • @JazzDuets
      @JazzDuets  6 років тому +2

yes! however, the triad unit has a different sound than a scale. Rather than 6 notes I think the ear perceives these sounds as 3 + 3

This is the best lesson I had in years! Though I play guitar it took me time to figure out my own favorite ones but I have got couple of them which are working for me! I just wanted to know if you have made any videos for playing triad pairs over moving harmony or chord progressions. I have been trying them on chord progression but I get lost! Thank you again for these amazing lessons!

Great video! For me, minor isn't SAD.
Your minor drone sounds optimistic, so all of the triad pairs you played sounded beautiful. However,
each one could be a different colored exotic in flight. Or, each one could be a different escape root from prison!

To me its almost like a strong solo with triads extending the underlying chord is the piece of paper the chords are painted on, and not the other way around. I dont mean this in any negative, or positive way. Great exercise. Thanks.
