My first pair were these 40 years ago in grey and I just barely retired them. I resoled them once and outside was cracking a little but they were my favorite boot.
All the ones I've had have been made in Mexico, I've had 3 pairs of the course of time. IMO they seem to be built pretty well. My last pair took 2 years of being worn to work everyday, 5 days a week. With a lot of walking. I've never owned any from The USA so I'm honestly not sure.
With the brown ones it was, I have a video with them looking all new and pretty from a few years ago but they were pretty well worn after a couple years. The black ones are still going strong though.
When my dad passed away he left me his black lizard skin boots ..I love these boots. ...a tear developed on the top of my boots. So I've been looking for lizard skin ropers....but no luck yet.
@@elfambino4066 I find there true to size to maybe a tad big. For example. I wear a 11.5-12 In sneakers but a 10.5-11.5 in casual/dress shoes. In Boots I wear 10.5D usually, sometimes 11d. I'd stick with your normal width. Size wise, if your say a 10 in sneakers, you might want to try a 9 in boots or and 8 1/2.

I have a pair of Ropers that I wear only on special occasions. I’ve had mine for so long that they are US made. They fit great after all these years.
Very nice, I've worn through a few pairs myself but that's great.

Does the side welt (the seam going up the side of the shaft) have cracks in it? I have black corral ropers that get cracks in the side welt
I've never had any issues with cracking in the shafts and I've owned many pairs of Justin Ropers.

Do these have a hard leather insole
There is a cloth liner and a thin layer of padding.
Is this calf skin? Like tecovas type material
I've never owned Tecvoas so I can't comment on that but on these boots, it's more of a traditional leather shaft.
How does the heel counter feel?
I've never had an issue with the heels or any discomfort in that area.

do they take a while to break in?
Not terribly long, I found about 4-5 wears they started feeling the way I wanted them too.
