- In this episode Charles Damiano interviews Sifu Richard Torres, Bruce Lee Collector, Historian and Jeet Kune Do instructor. Sifu Richard Torres discusses his Bruce Lee book and magazine collection as he tours Charles Damiano and Hector Martinez through his second Bruce Lee room. Richard owns hundreds, if not thousands of rare Bruce Lee books and magazines, that we will be sharing and discussing in this episode and future episodes!

Hi Charles. Yes, I will always be a Bruce Lee fan because of his contributions, accomplishments and inspiration to me. I started collecting mainly online since about 2004. For current favorite items since I like collecting photos and lobby cards, so there are 3 photos I like; One is a photo with him with arms around Chuck Norris and Bob Wall in Italy. The second is possibly one of a kind photo on set of Chinese Connection, with a fan (I was a told by the seller this was a millionaire in Malaysia). And then I have a personalized signed photo from Linda Dangcil (pictured with Bruce and Linda riding the horse) she signed in 2004 from 'Here comes the Brides'--of courses she was best known for her role in the Flying Nun. I didnt realize until recently that she passed in 2009, RIP. So it was neat story, her daughter actually reached out to me because I had won the bidding on the original TV network photo from Ebay. So she was so gracious and generous, I ended up making two copies of the vintage photos, one for Linda Dangcil and my copy with her signature.To this date, I still have the cardboard pieces where Linda Dancil's daughter, also named Linda where she wrote how amazing it was seeing her mom's reaction to the photo since it brought back those memories.

Hi Richard your library on bruce lee puts mine to shame lol. But your favorites I own 3. Wonderful collection, what you gentleman own in books and collectables I mostly do in movies. From run run Shaw,Raymond Chow,Billy jack,Bruce Lee,Chuck Norris,Steven Segal,Jean Claude Van Damm, Sho Cashugi,Jeff Speakman,Wesly Snipes,Jim Kelly,Jackie Chan,Donnie Yen,Tony jaa,etc. I collect in movies. My son's ask me why so many dvds dad. Well they are my collection in history and movie making,pick up a movie and read about the story and actors. And to share with family and friends,tells them a little about me and my era in history of my lifetime to pass on to you boys. Rock on fellas!

@@CharlesDamianoBLC That was a cool little story! No I do not. In fact I don’t own that many Bruce Lee books so I should really start. I have wanted to get more but don’t always follow through. That particular book would be great for memorabilia reprints alone!

A lot of people out there didnt even realize how big of impact Bruce lee really was when it coms to martial arts. I'll share a lil story about Bruce, I still remember as if it just happened yesterday.
I grew up in Asia, back in my highschool year in late 1980s, there was this kid in my class who got bullied almost on daily basis, and I'm telling you school bullying in Asian were far more worse than the western countries cuz you see, in Asian we got this thing called discipline, you know, parents and teachers hitting kids with clothing hangers, rulers and mop handles all the time, it was really just a commen thing.
Anyway, with that being said, this kid was bullied pretty bad in school, and for that whole semester he just kept his head down, quietly suck it up, never talked to anyone, never begged for help, and never fought back.
Until one day, this kid again surrounded by the thug students. He finally snapped, kid took out a 30 inch long steel pipe from his backpack, took off his tshirt, at that point we were all like "WTF", cuz after he took his shirt you can clearly see that this boy has been ripped, lean muscle, six pack abs, and a fuckin Bruce Lee face tattooed on his chest area.
This kid, demolished those thugs im tellin ya, in the blink of an eye those thug students are lying on the ground bleeding and crying out loud for their moms. Oh man I still remember the crispy sound when that metal pipe hitting on their skulls, that was some hell of sound. So after he dropped them all, he probably realized what a big trouble he got himself in, so he ran to his backpack, put the pipe back in it and grabbed his backpack, ran out of school front gate without saying a single word.
Never seen this kid after that day, some said he got arrested, some said he got transferred to juvenile center school, some said their parents put him into military, and some said he's still hiding in another city. To this day I still dont know what happened to that kid, I didnt even know If that Bruce tattoo was real, I wonder if it was just a sticker, or it was a real tattoo. But I can tell you that this kid was influenced, or inspired by Bruce for sure. As if Bruce was the one who gave him the power, the strength and the courage to do what he did back on that day.

The treasures of Bruce Lee is a great book. I have it in my collection. Think I may have the first print of tao too.
Draven Indeed it is and the first print of Toa of Jeet Kune Do is a treasure in itself!
I checked my copy and it is the 1975 copy.

@@CharlesDamianoBLC well i have a few movie lobby cards from one from Dean Martin in one of his Matt Helms movies and Raquel Welch Fathom and the complete collection of Natale Wood Brainstrom and i have 2 sets of Sacred Knives of Vengeance a 70s Kung Fu movie i saw way way back then. now these ones i bought are originals just like you see in a movie theater on display window which was so neat from our times when you can really see them all hanging up.

A buddy of mine owned a glossy soft cover biography of Bruce Lee. It has rich color photos, very well put together. I remember it mentioned some sort of a finger board that Lee developed to enhance motor mechanics, neuro transmitters, speed, accuracy, etc. whereby the practitioner would insert his finger with the idea that if he touched any part of the board, he would get a mild electric shock. Can anyone corroborate this? I've looked so over for this
Addendum.. Looked all over the internet and couldn't find anything, but it definitely sounds like something he would invent. So if your finger touched any part of the hole you would be shocked with only like a margin of error of say a couple of millimeters
Sound a interesting but not familiar with that! I know he used an electrical muscle stimulation machine that would passively work him muscle when attach to his body. Enjoy the channel!

My first memory of Bruce Lee was watching some Gung fu on British tv (of a guy who wasn’t Bruce) and my dad saying the best is Bruce Lee. So he implanted the idea early. So I always wanted to find out but it wasn’t until I was 12 maybe that some older kids invited me into their home to see some videos of Bruce, way of the dragon I think was my first and they had enter the dragon before the censor board removed the nun chucks. It was the 80’s and he was as good as I’d imagined in my mind since my father told me about him at about age 7 or 8.

Charles Damiano yea his charisma was magic. As was Brandon’s. I really enjoyed seeing him onscreen too as he had his own magic. Was a bit sad when he died as I looked forward to seeing more from him.
Same here my friend. I'm a big Brandon Lee fan and when he hit the screen I started feeling the same excitement I felt when I saw Bruce hit the big screen for the first time. Sad and big loss...

Richard has an amazing collection out of three Bruce Lee rooms. We have a lot of different items! I have over 5000 Bruce Lee items, mostly magazines, books, original movie posters, lobby cards, press books, press kits, slides, films, DVDs, videos, original photos, posters, autographs, figures and the list goes on and on.... He have a lot more current items than I do as I focused more on the vintage items from the early days. He had loads of Bruce Lee business cards, membership cards, books, magazines, Martial arts books being he is a JKD instructor and Bruce Lee Historian! Both are very large. I can tell you that he has his collection much more organized and displayed beautifully! (more than mine which most are in boxes or storage units and less are displayed) Hope that helps! Are you still collecting Bruce Lee items?

I guess in those situations your home insurance would cover that and you would have to start building your book and magazine collection back up from scratch! The fun of the hunt and the find never ends when your a collector!
