- On this episode of Bruce Lee Collecting, through my "Show and Tell" format, I share with you Bruce Lee's first book that he wrote and put out in 1963! It's called Chinese Gung Fu The Philosophical Art of Self-Defense and was printed in Oakland California. This is an original first printing!

I was in London for the Bruce Lee Convention and Taky Kimura brought his signed copy of this book, I have a photo of him holding the book and I got his signature 🙂 lovely guy and he told us some great stories about Bruce
That is fantastic! I met Taky as well at a few of the Bruce and Brandon memorial banquets that Linda Lee put on in the late 1990's. He is a wonderful person! Would love to hear one of the stories he shared with you on Bruce!
@@CharlesDamianoBLC Mr Kimura told us about how he met Bruce and how Bruce had helped him value his shelf worth ,he showed us some of the foot work Bruce had taught him, for his age (I think he was in his early 70's) he was very fast and he told us that Bruce had a bad temper and his punch's were like a machine gun.
He also told us about how Bruce had offered him a part in Game of Death and he didn't want to do it but Bruce insisted but because of Enter The Dragon it didn't happen
@@CharlesDamianoBLC I also attended the Bruce Lee film show 1979 with my now late Father, they showed The Big Boss, Fist of Fury and Way of the Dragon all uncut 😲 it was magical (I was only 14 years old) the whole crowd were cheering at Bruce's every move in his fight scenes, and one thing that stood out was the reaction to the 'Saw in the Head' scene from The Big Boss 😲 after the film everyone was talking about it .
I do believe it was the only time it was show in the UK, the organisers had brought over a mandarin copy of the film that hadn't been cut.
I have never seen it since and been looking for a copy with no luck, there was talk of a company restoring all the deleted scenes and it being released but it was blocked because of copyrights by Golden Harvest???

Wow they had left the Saw to the head in at that time? That is scene is so hard to find these days! Was taken out of all the DVD releases! Many fans would love to have the FOF uncut versions. Do you have that version?

i have the same book, but in red version of cover, sign in 1958 - 60's .
and the text inside was like a hand written...
and the stance form was like a human drawing with directional arrows
and the paper was too old crunchy and brownish .. it has any worth?
I think the originals were printed by Bruce and James Lee at James less home.

By seeing Martial Arts 🥋... I feel depressed due to one reason which keeps on tears me apart is, I've Hemophilia-B bleeding disorder. Out of 1000 people born, only 2 to 3 people are born with it. And, due to this problem, it keeps on stopping me from doing Martial Arts.

This was my first book also, I have this book over 25 years. Along with the green and orange books. I have the original that says Chinese Gung fu , The Phil art of self defense.I continue to train in Chinese Gung fun and Jeet Kune do. I’m glad you pointed out “ Original” by the bind of the book.my book is better than excellent condition. I keep it in a zip lock plastic bag. Thx again

An education indeed.. we too thought we had an original... the bums...bought on that note it was original on mail order over 20 years ago... we have the one that is stapled right in the centre and then folded....good to know though.. and we too shall keep an eye out... Thanks again for the great video and details...Interesting Note..there was on on Ebay 1 month ago touting to be original but after seeing this video... me thinks not...it appears bound like the one we have. They wanted $3000 for it.

Hi Charles, Chinese Gung fu by Bruce Lee indeed is a rare gem. I'm glad you found an original copy sorry it was damaged by someones scribbles. Even though you purchased several copies after the fact, they are indeed his first dictations of Martial arts before jeet kune do . I give you credit by always buying several copies of any magazine pertaining to Bruce Lee. Your purchases close to 40 yrs. It's a shame, how many of these books ended up in the trash, do you know how many of these books were signed by Bruce Lee? It is said that of the 500 books 300 were kept for years in the basement of Dan Lee and over time some were damaged and thrown away. It is true?

@@CharlesDamianoBLC No sir, unfortunately not, I really wanted to read some books about the deeper thoughts of Kung Fu, the Chinese philosophy around it and specially Bruce Lee the philosopher himself. People actually start debating and try to prove MMA superior to traditional martial arts by saying it's useless in a combat.
Maybe because MMA is a offensive MA and Kung Fu karate etc are defensive styles. But Kung Fu is great for neuromuscular training , muscle memory, self defense etc. After all it's a heritage.And also it is about our, breath, natural methods of training unlike steroids and protein powders of today's show business. So I really wanted to learn it.I have researched about Jeet Kune do by the way😄

1st reprint?
Not quit sure but supposedly a second batch of 500 books were printed again in 1963 after the first batch ran out and I picked up reprinted issues in NYC Chinatown back in the early to mid 70’s! ( still have about 4 mint copies of those!)

Tough question. Depending on the condition I have seen them sell for $1000-$1500 and more. A few that were signed by Bruce Lee can demand anything a buyer is willing to pay! What have you seen some sell for?

Bruce Lee was curse by his Chinese elders for introducing kung fu to the West.
& that cursed was inherited by his son Brandon Lee.
That caused their death.

@@CharlesDamianoBLC it happened to be a mid nite show. I was only 12 year old. My neighbour asked to join him for the show. Nobody knew who Bruce Lee was. At that time peoples only knew Jimmy Wang Yu for his box office flim Chinese Boxer. And actors like Lo lieh, David Chang etc. However people seem to start talking abouth this new actor as they have seen his flim in the advertisement. But after watching Bruce Lee, it was such a pandemic. Even girls were talking about him. And everybody started to learn karate, Tae Kwon Do because chinese kung fu and wing chun were still populor only with the chinese. Everyone talked about him, bought anything likes magezine, badges, shirt that have Bruce. Chinese kung fu movies were all box office eversince Bruce intoduced the world with martial art. At that time no cd, no online and video were rare. So we watched his movies many times. I remembered watching ETD more that 10. Watch one show after another. All my classmates remembered me as one of Bruce die hard fan. I have a black belt in Tang Hup Mo Do Kwan. And learnt a bit of Karate, Judo and malay martial art. I am now 62 and have retired from martial art. But still be Bruce Lee fan.

I do find the comments by Ed Parker, James Lee, & Wally Jay in this book interesting when you consider what some of the haters say about the opinions of Bruce Lee's contemporaries about him. You find people saying that guys like Chuck Norris, Mike Stone, etc. only said positive things about Bruce for their own gain (association with Bruce would get them work in Hollywood, coverage in Black Belt Magazine, etc.), that Bruce wasn't really respected by the top martial artists of that time period while he was alive. I've never believed that nonsense, but the forewords in this book, written years before Bruce had any fame in the States, indicate that well known masters of that era respected Bruce from the 1st time they met him.
Your are absolutely correct! Their comment before Bruce Lee was famous says volumes of what they saw and thought of his ability, mindset and skill even back then! He was way ahead of his time!

@@CharlesDamianoBLC My first.movie i saw was "The way of the dragon". I think it was in the year 1983. Before that a saw tarzan and french movies(loius de funes etc). The moment when i saw The way of the dragon a started martial arts. He was and still is my motivational button😊

Hi Charles. I just saw your original book of Bruce's Chinese Gung Fu The Philosophical Art of Self Defense and checked on my own "original" copy I got from ebay a few years ago. Luckily mine is in very good condition and has not been written on. But it has some differences to yours. First there is no writing on the spine, only the staples. Second is that it's marked as a first edition on the third page and does not have the essay advert in the back. I also have a reprint one which is signed by Sifu Taky Kimura and the late Jesse Glover as they were both appear in the book. Also Sigung Richard Bustillo often told the story that Bruce gave him the last copy which Bruce owned and signed for him. Years later Linda told him that Bruce said that to everyone.
Hi Jonathan as far as I know there was around 500 originally printed of the book and then a second batch of around 500 got printed and each of these original have words on the spine and either an AD of Bruce Lees essay-like in the one I have or an AD of James Lee shown breaking bricks! Outside of that all others are reprints that can say first printing inside that book-but are not original. I have a few of those as well but it does not mean it is a first printing. Wow great that you have Taky and Jesse Glovers autographs on one our your books! Funny story about Linda saying Bruce told that to everyone....What are a few of your favorite items in your Bruce Lee Collection and when did you start collecting?
Thanks for your reply Charles. I've been collecting since the early 80's when I first saw Enter the Dragon on video and started practicing martial arts. I have some nice pieces but I'm not quite in your league. A few of my best items are a copy of Bruce's autopsy, the book we spoke about and a poster from Shannon Lee marked 3/200. Top of my collection is a kick pad used by Bruce for training which I bought from the same collector as the poster. Also very personal to me is a copy of Dan Inosanto's book "Absorb what is useful." Again thanks for your reply. I started to learn Karate when I was 17, but found that it didn't suit me as I'm left handed and everything was taught using the right side. So I always felt better with my left forward so Bruce's JKD was that best option for me. I then started going to seminars here in the U.K. and attended some by Dan Inosanto, Larry Hartsell, Jesse Glove and Richard Bustillo, I also learnt eskrima as well. I met Taky Kimura at Bruce's grave on the 40th anniversary where he signed my books. The kick pad is framed and does have a COA also signed by Taky. I forgot to mention the full size Bruce figure I have in my gym. I do have something that both you and Hector may be interested in if you could kindly give me your email address I'll contact you.

OMG! I Have that book too. I have to go to see. If i have the orginal copy... I have second edition 1987 it has that side text but not that 99 page ad and it's glued. Mine is awesome condition tho.

Mine say inner page that First edition 1963, second edition 1987 and third edition 1988. I think you have 1963 and 1988 versions and i have 1987 version. Mine say at upper side inner page copyprotection sign tag 1987 Linda Lee.

Goes through whole life of Bruce's. Book is inside own case. I had two those..sold other one to a big fan and i kept other one for me. Book name is Treasures of Bruce Lee.

I have a reprint that has a heavy cover.
Yes lots of reprints came out afterwards. Rumor has it only 500 of original were printed in 1963, then a second batch was printed shortly afterwards. So some say roughly 1500 copies of original were printed. Very hard to come across now after 55 years!

If you can find an original- only 500 printed in 1963 it’s worth a lot of money! It’s rarity come from limited quantity printed and first book ever written by Bruce Lee. It is great about 60-70 pages but would have to check! Do you own an original?

How lucky can you get to have an original copy, even with the doodles. I was also scanning what was in the case behind you. Looks like we have a lot more items to feast on. Really enjoyed the Hector Martinez series and hope you do more with other collectors if possible. Got the catalog #2. Terrific presentation! A very rare and scarce book indeed! Another way to tell if you have an “original copy” is by the clarity of the photos in the book. The photos in the reprints are dark and look like “carbon copies.” Yours is definitely an original. Great piece Charlie and by the way, I’m loving your tee shirt! 👍

Is there any chance you know where to get an actual copy of that not the original because of course that's going to be very difficult to find but a copy that's an actual copy and hasn't been changed I'm not worried about the ads in the book I'm just looking for the actual text that has not been changed
