This chimney flashing has a solid piece of coil stock, running down it and leaking.

Looks like they re-used the old continuous piece of milled flashing or re-used the old step flashing and installed the continuous milled piece overtop. At 1:23 you can see an old nail hole in the piece of metal above the 1 piece of step flashing they installed.
They probably re-used the old continuous metal flashing with nail holes all over them instead of installing step flashing correctly as you mentioned. That nail on the bottom corner of the chimney that was loose definitely would let some water in especially in the winter time due to improper placement (why would they put exposed nails right where water will run down over top of lol.
Looks like at 0:23 they didn’t even put roof to wall flashing on the small strip at the wall above the partial cricket and ran over to cover the top of the small valley. I bet they also re-used the old step flashing ran up the brick wall behind the counter flashing, fascia wood, fascia boards, and drip edge where it meets the peak.
They might have installed the metal continuous strips when last replacing or repairing the roof thinking if they keep the old step flashing with nail holes it would be fine doubled up with a new strait piece or metal flashing and they just caulk where roof meets the walls/chimney.
Got to love the shady work we find out there in this industry these days. It’s all over the place. Roofers in the 90’s and early 2000’s weren’t as lazy, actually knew proper installation methods, and for the most part had way less errors than all the work that’s being done these days. About 80% of roofing companies these days are posing as roofers when all they’ve done was read the installation manual, pass an open book test to get certified, and learn the insurance game.
They think just because they learn the basics of roofing without ever installing a roof that if they just know the discontinued shingles/incompatible shingles, brittle test fail, line of site, law and ordinance, etc they know it all and are some kind of roofing heroes.
We’re out of Cleveland, Ohio and see the craziest stuff all the time from crap installs to guy’s vandalizing roof’s to get them paid for because they can’t stay busy with leads from the amazing work they do. I even stepped away from my roofing business back in 2015 to help Ladder Now/Seek Now take over the ladder assist market from Hancock since they had what seemed to be like a small monopoly going. It even seemed like they were in bed with the insurance companies 😂.
After inspecting well over 10,000 roof’s I finally had enough of what I wanted to see and came right back to what I was born to do which was be a true roofing contractor not a fake 1 like the 8 out of 10 I used to meet from 2015-2023.

ive done some work on new built homes where the builder had all materials on sight and they had a 90 degree coil stock but there was a lip bent over on the decking side to straight direct water down. it seemed ok but im definately all for step flashing every time

Can you do a video on proper attic ventilation? Like intake, exhaust and the calculations.

We have some flashing issue that caused some leaking this year when we had back back heavy rain.. we went and checked roof and found out it was just the very end of the valley and water was pooling and it caused the leak so we just wa wanted the flashing fixed. My question is is it reasonable to be qouted 2.5 to 3000$ from the contractors that we asked. Is it a normal rate or were we over qouted. Our roof is not pitch and its in a single house. I watched your videos and for me i think i can do it.. our singles are in perfect condition and our roof was replaced 2011

I'm sad to say that here in Florida, practically zero roofers use step flashing on roof-to-wall interfaces. If they did, I'd hire them because they'd probably follow a lot of other NRCA guidelines as well! I wish Brian from Grand Roofing was in Florida!

Majority of the homes are stucco. No homeowner wants to pay to have stucco removed and patched to assess flashing. The flashing behind the stucco wall gets reused and roofing tar is installed over the flashing. That is why majority do not step flash.

I bet on the back of the chimney the drip edge is under the flashing instead of over

I would say that continuous flashing is much easier to install. Thats why "fly by nights" do it. Always step flash. ONLY way to do it.( 45yrs roofing)
