Hey Dr. Parker, I love your authenticity in your videos! Also, if and when you have time, can you talk about death in OR, how to deal with it, and maybe a story to accompany. Please and thank you!!
Hey Dr. Parker. Former army combat medic and firefighter going into medicine. I am very passionate about emergency services and I can't see myself doing anything else. I'm looking at either going into emergency medicine or trauma surgery. Can you do a video about EM vs Trauma?
EM doctors don't perform surgeries they stabilize patients before surgeon comes but you see anything from acute abdominal pain, angina to fractures but shortly em doctor stabilize ,trauma surgeons operate !
Hey everyone, just an update. I ended up getting into a US MD school, I am now a first year med student on the Army scholarship. I'm currently focusing on going into General Surgery with the goal of specializing in Trauma. Let me know if anyone has any questions from the pre-hospital side of the house :) If you're reading this Dr. Parker, I'd love to chat with you and pick your brains if you are available.
Future ENT surgeon here (currently a 4th year Canadian med student) who can't stop binge-watching your videos. Good advice + great looking doc make for a great channel haha. 😜
Thanks for explaining the differences and nuances between the various types of “emergency” surgeries. This was a very interesting and informative vlog.
I’m a 17 year old and I’m thinking of studying general surgery! I’m really scared cause i feel like i wont be able to do this and mess up.... i feel like i wont be able to remember so many definitions and procedures but your videos are really helping me!!! Thank you!!
excellent explanation of the various elements and differences btween the trauma and general surgeon and their responsibilities and education requirements.
What are your thoughts of the future of surgery? Will robotic surgery like the Da Vinci be more prevalent in General Surgery, and are there fellowships for this field?
would be interesting to see what you looked like in high school and college, then we could judge be and be like "ah, he was that guy" anybody else wonder that? kindergarten to this day I still hope that a teacher or professor would show us what they were like when they were our age
Love this video Dd.Parker! I'm actually also confused about general ortho vs trauma ortho, we have both of those at our hospital but it seems that gen ortho takes all the calls whether there was a trauma behind the injury or not. I also don't get how you can get an ortho injury without trauma to begin with. It would be great if you can you talk about if you need research to get into specialized surgical residencies and if so what type and when is the best time to do that during medical school? also if you can talk about how to optimize your score for step 1 in a school that offers an 18 months science program instead of the 2 full years and if it helps to do for instance an internal medicine rotation before your boards in that extra semester vs taking your step 1 right after the 18 months.
It’s a bit confusing. Some do ortho trauma fellowship, some do ortho trauma if they feel comfortable without the fellowship. Going forward most likely u will need the fellowship.
here in germany trauma doctors (unfallchirurgen) are mostly involved in bony things, which is a bit boring in the long run, wheras the general surgeons (allgemeinchirurgen) are taking the cases with inner organ damage etc. botom line is that it differs from case to case/hospital etc... :/
Thanks Just had my gallbladder removed by General Surgeon and was left wondering what the differences were. Also, have had a consult with a cardio thoracic surgeon recently as well.
I enjoy your videos man! I can’t dream of doing any other profession but general surgery. I have been shadowing one for about 5 to 6 years now and I just can’t get enough. Standing for numerous amounts of hours can be awful. So could you possibly talk about how to become a faster and more effective surgeon? Also could you talk more on the lifestyle of a general surgeon, trauma surgeon, acute care surgeon?
hey dr buck, i appreciate the way you can do something serious like hard work of being a surgeon and being whimsical and goofy at the same time hahahah
Great video, thanks for making this Dr. Buck! Def. helps explain the different routes a Gen Surgeon can take after completing residency. The AAST has a list of the 21 programs offering the 2 year ACS Fellowship, and the ACGME shows the programs offering just the 1 year CC fellowship. I think I'll be going the 2 year ACS Fellowship route when the time comes.
Dr. Parker, great video thanks for the info! I’m currently an M1 and thinking about life in the OR. What trends do you see for the future of medicine let’s say in the next 5-10 years, and what specialties do you anticipate will become more/less important, interesting, competitive, undergo the most change, etc. I would appreciate you comments the thought of choosing a medical specialty right now seems impossible to me.
What classes would you recommend for highschool and college, I'm a freshman in h.s and I'm really interested in going into the medical field(more specifically surgery) and I would like some recommendations
Andrew bossaller I’m not a doctor but I’m going to be. I just started college and really the best things you could take are obviously your A&P classes (anatomy and physiology) sports medicine if it’s offered and other medicine based classes. Make sure you excel in the sciences though because they play a big role in being a physician. Also what I did was I got my EMT certification which is a good first step into the medical and emergency medicine field. I’m even considering going to paramedic school because paramedics (at least in NY) are a step way above EMTs. They can intubate pts give medications via IV and have a ton of other really cool knowledge. They’re like a step under a doctor. I don’t know though I gotta figure it all out haha. Do your best in HS and learn your best study strategies now. Trust me I wasn’t really the type of person to study in HS because it all came easily to me and now I’m regretting it. College classes are way harder haha. Good luck!
Great discussion. I’m interviewing a trauma surgeon from my hospital next week. Our hospital in 2021 designates as Level II versus Level III, so this helped a lot. Sage advice on questions to ask? I’m a Family Physician and want to highlight our surgeons and their experience.
Hey Dr. Parker I have a question, is there a special surgeon that works in emergency, does surgery's and visits his patients while there are no emergencys. I'm wondering if there is a profession that includes visiting patients during free time and during emergencys performing surgery's. Does a neurosurgeon do this?
I don't know how people can do it? To cut someone open in general surgery or even further, completely dismantle a body part from a person. That's not on my game.
Thanks for sharing the differences! Looking to do orthopedic surgery but don't know which specialty would be best. What have you found to be the most popular? I've really been interested in sports medicine but am open to others.
Is there anyway someone could choose to do both a trauma and a vascular fellowship after a general surgery residency so that they would be better prepared for different kinds of trauma injuries and could therefore operate more often and need to consult others less?
Are you in med school yet? When you do your rotations, you will either hate or love your surgery rotation. you literally have to be unable to see yourself happy in any other field if you chose it. Surgery can be absolutely soul sucking and the lifestyle/culture is harsh as hell. My rotation made me realize I was in love with the idea more than the reality of surgery. Ultimately it's s decision that can only be made with experience.
Thanks for the videos! Could you pls share your views on vascular surgery vs mainstream general surgery? How possible is it attaining a good balance between operating and academics/research in both? Also, issues with work/life balance in both? Thank you very much!
Hey Dr. Buck! something i would like to hear about is if there are surgeons out there who practice in more than on specialty, if so how do they accomplish this? Thank you!!
Sooo help umm I am just gonna go to o levels but I want to be sure of what I want to do .... I want to do general surgery and I also want to specialise in neurosurgery...... idk can someone tell be if that's possible and stuff .I really dont know .............😅😅
You can definitely have fun in college while pre-med. I'm in dental school now, but I have a few friends who are in med school and 2/3 were the biggest party people I know. Doing summer research instead of year-long research really helps with having time during the fall and spring semesters.

Everyone! Just join Dentistry. No peoples lives on your hands, less messy, less working hours, and the same (if not more) in the paycheck department. I love medicine but personally, I chose dentistry. People often forget about dentistry because they dont hear much about it, so heres me putting it out there. Dentistry is awesome. Good day.

I LOVE YOOOUUUUUUUUUU hahah
Not gonna lie, the fact that you replied made my entire week ☺️
Update ? What residency did u match into? Was it ENT? Hahaha
Did you end up pursuing ENT surgery?

excellent explanation of the various elements and differences btween the trauma and general surgeon and their responsibilities and education requirements.
Trauma surgery is a fellowship off of general surgery, so the requirements are the same
What are your thoughts of the future of surgery? Will robotic surgery like the Da Vinci be more prevalent in General Surgery, and are there fellowships for this field?
I love how honest you are
It’s a shame we don’t have that distinction in the uk yet. Being a trauma surgeon would be awesome
So what is the difference in the UK? Are trauma surgeons called something else?
would be interesting to see what you looked like in high school and college, then we could judge be and be like "ah, he was that guy"
anybody else wonder that? kindergarten to this day I still hope that a teacher or professor would show us what they were like when they were our age

I'm just here for his beard.
Can you do DO vs MD?

Please do a video about Grey's anatomy! Would like to hear a real doctor's opinion about it!
Not accurate it’s a “medical” drama show, not medically accurate for the most part.
have you ever treated car accidents or gun shots? you need ice in your veins to stay calm in those circumstances. society mvps!
thousands of them
No...yoz just need to control your thoughts, posture and breathing

General surgery is a fun hobby. Trauma is the most incredible thing in the world! :P
no need to compare they’re both needed!
Give us a videon on bariatric surgery vs general surgery
Bariatrics is for obese patients.

Dealing with people's bad breath every day... No, thank you xD
People get in to medicine to have lives at stake and to save them, dentistry eliminates the sole reason to go into medicine, saving lives
Dawn I’ve heard suicides rates in dentistry were some of the highest.
