Very impressed with the upgrades...One additional suggestion which might be useful to some people would be adding locking castors so it can be wheeled about....
I really liked the 4th upgrade, The Removable Worktop which I am going to build for mine when I have a spare few minutes . First I need to find a couple of pallets though :-) , cheers for the idea.
I have 4 Black and Decker Workmate folding work benches. I am definitely going to take and use some if not all of your impressive work table modifications. The shelf idea is gold. I'm doing some drilling or using a router up above and I have nowhere to put down the tool I'm using so it's out of the way. The shelf will be very useful. That extended table top that clamps into the work table top is sheer genius. I absolutely have to do that one. Always run out of room on the table top working on different projects. That bigger table top will end that problem. Then the clamp on vise, a real plus when filing some metal project pieces. Really nice set up all around. I gotta get busy. Thanks so much for your great ideas. Really great video.
Thanks I'm glad you found the video useful. I have some more ideas actually for bench modifications so I might make a part 2. Thanks for the great comment! 👍🏻
Great video as usual Phil, you’re definitely going to get many years of use out of that bench. You now need a bench for your miter saw so you not cutting on the ground anymore
Great job Phill I am so glad I came across you on UA-cam.You always have the coolest projects and you explain them so well.Thank you and keep up the awesome work.
I've been thinking of getting myself a black n decker workmate for a wee while now and thought I wish the top was a bit bigger and I never thought until now with what you have just done . 😁 what a great idea 💡 ! Thanks I'll be doing the same now to give myself a bigger top to work on . Cheers .😁👍👍
Thanks for the inspiration! I've got a Ryobi workbench which is perfect small size for my projects but I was really missing a few features e.g. to keep those 'dogs' as you call them somewhere when I'm not using them, and a larger worktop to place over the base as you have done. This will be my next project. It's not too hard for a non-expert DYI-selfer and yet will make my little workbench much more fun to use and give it some extra versatility. Cheers, mate. Well done!
Thanks 👍🏻 it does make them more useful and I prefer to work on them outside when the weather is good. I have some more ideas for small workbenches and should be doing a other vid about it soon 🙂 glad you liked the video.
Good ideas and examples. I am looking for scrap wood now to replace the top on mine. That cheap MDF snapped. But the extra (larger) wood top is a great idea. Plus the holder for the dogs. I've got to keep mine foldable, as I live in Japan right now and space in my house is limited. The only thing I am thinking, is did you think of a waterfall on the sides of the main surface? I am contemplating a 2 or 4" waterfall for a clamping surface? Not sure.
Thanks 👍🏻 I have since changed the top again to an Oak top as I leave it outside the pine started to cup slightly. I never considered adding a waterfall on the edge although now you mention it I think it could be a good idea.
Great idea Phil those replacement wooden vice parts are expensive to buy think mines made from Bamboo. I have a original workbench over 35 years old and still going strong and a couple of cheap ones, and they rubbish even the Keter clone B&Q one broke one of the legs, so bought a Keter one same but different colour. I might have a pop at replacement of my workbench topd at some point when wood is more reasonable price, it's silly money now. CLS timber I often use, used to be around £2.38 now its £4.99 at B&Q
Was this originally the workmate 125? I like the idea of a holder for the bench dogs. Once thing you may consider is using a V shaped router bit doen the inside edges of the 2x for holding pipe and possibly the 2 "V" notches as well. From the video yours looks like a different brand than Black and Decker I got 2 of the basic workmate 125s for $12 US at Home Depot here in the states and they seem pretty decent.. I have 2 cheaper plastic saw horses rated for 300 pounds each which are nice and light weight but I can use these to replace them or just use em as a 2nd set of hands when working alone which is what these were likely made for.. Cheers for the video
Thanks! This is just a cheap unbranded one that I found on the side of the road. I did think about adding the groove for clamping pipe although I rarely work with pipe so didn't bother although it's a good idea. The black and decker ones are a bit better quality that this one I would say.
I think you might be correct about that. The legs were like this when I found the bench thrown out. I assumed they were supposed to be like that although looking at some other benches they seem to splay outward at the bottom and mine go inwards. I will take a closer look at it later on. Thanks for pointing that out.
Off topic but I had asked you a few years ago what kind of tree that is with the spiky leaves but you never did answer. It doesn't look like something that would survive a U.K. Winter. I want one!
Hi, that plant is a Cordyline Australis from New Zealand. I planted it there about 7 years ago. It has survived so far. They only die back in a very bad winter.

Nice job, you could hold an elephant with that beauty.
Cheers! It is quite strong actually!
Nice job 👍🏻
Cheers 👍🏻
Got to agree with Chris there Phil, a mitre saw station would be a great idea. Loving your work mate, no pun intended!
Haha thanks Andy yea I will put it on my to doo list of projects 😆👌
Perfect 👏
Cheers 👍🏻
That's exactly what I was trying to find
Another brilliant idea which I plan to copy as it is genius for all of us that do most of our work outside.
Thanks Tony! I actually have a few more ideas for the Workbench so I might make a second video with more modifications.
Very impressed with the upgrades...One additional suggestion which might be useful to some people would be adding locking castors so it can be wheeled about....
Yes that could be a good idea I've seen that done.
Nice wrench at 3:10.
Oh yea I was too lazy to get the spanner out 😆
Hi Phil,
A good update for the folding bench. This way it will be more robust and useful. Thank you for sharing the details. See you. Big greetings.
Thanks mate 👍

Love a good upgrade video especially with free recycled materials. People don't do enough of it. good vid.
Thank you! My thought exactly 👍
good job Phill
Thanks 👍🏻
This is awesome!!! I love those modifications you made!! I will definitely do the same to my work bench! Thanks for the inspiration! Blessings! 🙏🏻
Your welcome & glad you found it useful cheers!
Absolutely love it! The expanded top is fantastic!
Cheers! 👍🏻
Nice job Phill. 👍
Thanks Dave 👍👍
Great upgrades Phil.
Nice one Ian ;)

great idea and excellent video footage

Thanks 👍🏻
Wish I had so Many tool, still enjoyed though
Thanks 👍🏻 I just bought mine one at a time over a few years. You don't need too many tools though just the basics.
@@PhillWyattProjects Got most hand tools battery drill, chopsaw but I think a big ass lathe is beyond me ✌️
@@craigeydmann those tools you have really are the main tools you need to get most jobs done 👍🏻
Love it I did do one years ago only the top bit but I will do the hole thing soon
I'm always using mine. I've put an oak top on it now because it's left outside.
@@PhillWyattProjects does the oil you use work as id probably leave my extension in shed but workmate outside

Any problems with the painted dogs marking work pieces?
Good question. No the spray paint hasn't come off not that I've noticed anyway.
may i know what's the size of the extended top?
Yea each piece is around 65cm x 15cm.
2:35 So, it doesn’t fold anymore? I guess your gains are better than your losses though. Thanks for sharing. Cheers.
Yea it's lost its folding feature but I leave it outside set up permanently anyway.
@@PhillWyattProjects Great rebuild!

Thanks Chris 👍 yea I remember not too long ago the 2x3's were £1.75. this is why I'm always on the look out for scrap wood.

Will a bench like this accommodate a vise?
Yes you can add a vice onto it. It wouldn't be as stable as a conventional workbench as they are much heavier but it still works.
@@PhillWyattProjects thank you for the reply and the content !
@@SoToAnTrAx your welcome 👍🏻
Looks like the bench legs were put on facing inwards - I think if they were to be reversed the bench would have a wider footprint=be more stable.
I think you might be correct about that. The legs were like this when I found the bench thrown out. I assumed they were supposed to be like that although looking at some other benches they seem to splay outward at the bottom and mine go inwards. I will take a closer look at it later on. Good pallet wood Phil. The ones I get are nowhere near that quality. Keep those ideas coming 👍
Thanks 👍
