(picking 482) Picking a brand new ABUS 85/40 - a present directly from ABUS (as "compensation")

  • I was complaining to ABUS that their 72/40 can be bypassed very easily (see also • (picking 471) Amazing ... ). After a long email discussion they confirmed that it's made of a bypassable design but that they cannot change it. As compensation they sent me a 85/40 which does not suffer from this weakness (for free). The picking of the 85/40 was more difficult than expected. I was expecting standard and spool pins but the feedback was weird. Before I got the real false set, I felt a lot of little counter rotations - maybe they have put serrated pins in that locks. Confused by this feedback it took me 15 min to get the first opening. The second was much quicker.

    Not a bad little lock at all and great ABUS gave you it for free. it doesn’t quite meet the same spec as the 72/40 as it’s not repinnable, but still cool :-)

    • @Potti314
      @Potti314  6 років тому +1

      Yes, not the same type of lock as the 72/40 but the compensation was to give me a lock that has not this bypass weakness. It's still a nice and unique situation to receive a lock for free under these circumstances. The little 85/40 is very cool :-)

    Great picking and great vid again Michael, my friend, very cool, while I watched as you tried to put the shim in the padlock, I imagined the people of Abus watching the video and sweating cold because you could get it LOL ;o))
    Good padlock, it's great to know that they have modified the bolts on their locks and that they will provide us with more fun.
    Thanks for watching buddy ;o))

      The little 85/40 is a lot of fun an meanwhile it picks consistently in under a minute. I love it and it taught me once again that picking a lock the first time is very difficult for me if I have no idea about the type of feedback from the pins. The whole story was very entertaining for me and I'm happy that I did complain and didn't give up until they finally confirmed the weakness. Thanks a lot for watching and commenting buddy :-)

      I know what you say buddy, is very very difficult for me to make a openning out of the package, usually I change the pick and the wrench several times before I can pick the lock. That's something that you do much better than me. Great vid again my friend, a pleasure to view ;o))

    That definitely is a cool story Potti haha :). The bypass does work on more locks from them as only the 72 😜 and I would not have expected them to change their design. Other than that the 72s are pretty good locks and they do their job. Very cool from them anyway to send you another one for compensation ;D. I've not seen an 85 with the Abus Address and these numbers and letters stamped on the bottom...so maybe they have made a special one just for you ;D. Very cool 😋👍, have fun Potti 👋🦊.

      I know that more locks suffer from this weakness. Abus knows this weakness for very long and has not taken action - that's what I complain and also that no anti-bypass plate is available. Still cool to get this 85/40 for free with all this nice marks ;-)

      Thanks for watching - the shims are new and so I will try to get some experience. Beside of this it would have been funny if they sent a shimmable lock as compensation ;-)

      Potti314 you mean bypassable?

    • @Potti314
      @Potti314  6 років тому

      Ah sorry I didn't read carefully. You wrote "bypass" ans I read "shim" - haha. The shimming I tried on the 85/40 (with the result of two broken shims) but bypassing in the same way as on the 72/40 is not possible as of the design of these brass non-rekeyable locks. I tried however the knife attack but the locking bars seems shielded and the shackle is locked at both sides.

    Great video as always. I think ABUS has hand-selected the biting of the key, it's a quite good bitting. ;-) Nice picking from you. It's sad that ABUS can't do anything about the 72/40, but it was developed as a lockout lock. And therefore it is pretty good. It is one of my favorite locks.

    • @Potti314
      @Potti314  6 років тому +1

      Especially a lockout lock shall not be bypassabable - right ;-) Yes, sad they "cannot" find a solution for this problem. It all comes down to profit and marketing - they know about this problem for very long and perhaps of reasons to keep a perfect company image they want to keep it under the hood. Offering a repair-kit (ant-bypass wafer) might reduce their reputation.

    At least you had a dialogue with them. I give them high marks just for that. Getting compensated is even better! Some people\vendors just ignore you. Well picked!

      Thank you. The conversation was a bit exhausting but finally the confirmed the weakness and sent a lock for conversation. Will see what other lock companies will respond. Will try with Burg Wächter next ;-)

    How do they know a bypass is not a common attack? A bypass will not leave any marks on the lock. It could be common, & they wouldn't know. They covered their butts by saying it wasn't a high security lock. At least American Lock acknowledged that their locks were bypassable and added a wafer to prevent that attack. Oh well, at least you got a new lock out of it. Thanks for sharing buddy. 👍👏🔓

    • @Potti314
      @Potti314  6 років тому

      Well, I think they don't really know but all of their statements are marketing driven - so they say what make them look less worse. I agree that they should officially state this weakness and offer "repair" items.

    • @HingerlAlois

      Well frankly what are the chances that some random thief knows this bypass and has the tool for it?
      Far more likely that they just cut it off.

    These 72/40 locks now have a bypass protection plate in the back, it's very thin, but does the job. I find it funny, that ABUS sent you an even easier lock to pick. According to the LPU belt ranking the 72/40 is a green belt lock, while the 85/40 is an orange belt lock.

    Interesting story, but why didn't you check to see if this one was shrouded around the locking pawl mechanism?
    It does look like they have upped their game with this newer series🤔🤔👍
    Thanks as always for sharing buddy 😘😘

      Yes you're right I could have checked the bolts a little better before. There is indeed a step which makes pushing in a shim harder. But also the tolerances are really good on this lock. I love this little present lock :-)

    Lovely of them to send you! I paid nearly 15€ in Hamburg for my 85/40. I think it has 1 normal pin and 3 mushrooms, but the feedback is enigmatic.

      @@julianretzlaff4000 Moin Julian, bin leider aus der Hauptstadt ausgezogen aber kann definitiv ein paar Tips einwerfen. Was mir vor allem geholfen hat ist einfach mit geschlossenen Augen zwecks Visualilisierung das Knacken üben, ohne Musik oder sonstigen Ablenkungen. Schlosser aufmachen Lernen geht meiner Erfahrung nach mehr um Konzentration und Fokus als Werkzeuge und Technik (sind ja auch wichtig, aber den 85/40 kann ich nun mit fast jeder Kombination in meiner Kiste aufmachen). Ist ja wie eine Art Achtsamkeitsmeditation. Sobald ich den Trick mitbekommen habe (aus Reddit r/lockpicking) gings für mich eher schnell los!

    most criminals do not care about how a lock gets opened. And few have a dimple pick in the pocket incase of meeting a 72/40. this and many other locks can be bypassed with a medium size bolt cutter, so that is a better all round tool to bring. Most thieves are luckily not lock nerds like us.

    • @Potti314
      @Potti314  6 років тому

      You might be right that criminals usually use violent methods to attack locks. Nonetheless ABUS could have fixed their bypass problem like American did it by selling anti-bypass plates. It's always better to have less flaws in a lock.

  • @DonzLockz

    Abus felt a just a little bit guilty so they sent you a special challenge lock...however, they didn't feel guilty enough to actually rectify the problem. To me, that is very dissapointing from Abus. They can do anything they want but to blame it on a technical reason is lame, it is almost certainly a financial reason. If they can't afford to "fix" the fault, they should immediately remove it from the market. Paclock in contrast, actually take feedback seriously and do take action to remediate their flaws, even if it cost them money, their reputation is more important than financial gain. Abus need to take a lesson from Paclock here.🍺😎

    • @Potti314
      @Potti314  6 років тому

      Totally agree. They know the situation with the 72/40 for very long. But for them it seems trying to keep it under the hood for the public is less expensive and better for their reputation. The lock that they sent is cool and I didn't expect that at all. Would be nice to get anit-bypass plates for the 72/40 but they don't sell them - maybe I'll try to make one myself.

    ABUS is not willing to change the design, nor putting a cheap anti bypass plate in it.
    They just make their cheap locks, to be looking like locks, just like most chinese manufacturers.
    There is another reason, why I don't like ABUS:
    They do discriminate women:

      Interesting aspect, thanks for the pointer. But in general almost all manufacturers are reluctant to do changes. Just look at master lock company.
