Alec Steele Blacksmith 2020
That little dialogue after the miss-hit really warmed my heart with how wholesome it was.
Pretty sure it was a more passive aggressive "you OK?" - as if to say TF you doing mate, concentrate...
@@gavinhuckstepp582 Could be, or it could be that hitting things wrong can hurt your hands at a minimum, let alone if something chips off and goes flying, so he was actually concerned.
the music beats line up with the hits. this takes so much skill and time which goes to show how much effort these guys put into the vids
Too true
its one of the little things that got me hooked to his videos way back when he was still in the UK. Always had great videography.
Turned out good Alec!
You're the reason I subbed to Alec, when you guys made that axe together. Good times!
@@HaUsSssss I thought it was a bushcraft knife they made
@@phoff5850 I saw an episode where they made a hatchet, I think he's been in a couple videos
"It's the price of entry." Well-said, Alec! 👍⚒💪👊
I think Alec's words about improvement, process, and the value of planning are really important. Also important is the attitude (which I think Alec Steele has,) that one must regard "mistakes," "failures," etc., with a kind of objectivity, serenity, even joy, for they represent a moment in our lives, a step along the way, a day in the journey. The journey is who we are. maybe. i'm no philosopher.
I love axes, Alec, i hope you forge some more. Make a hewing axe!
So enjoyed your middle comment on challenging yourself with process and comfort boundaries. That's what I do with re/up-cycled materials constantly. Rock on!
inspired by the genuine care and patience displayed at the mis-hit. I tend to get in the zone during work and can end up a bit cranky at mistakes, gonna make an effort to emulate that more in my work.
I'm gonna go ahead and say it, I love your attitude about things. Mistakes...no big deal we learn from them. Accidents...as long as everyone is safe we are good to go! Love the content and keep up the great work and attitude.
Please finally do a proper team introduction with everyone that has joined your team.
I've been asking for months!
But this is the Alec Steele show.
I second that! If he's good enough to swing a hammer, he deserves an introduction.
@@snarf552000 sorry dude, but by that logic you wouldn't get to see Will either.
And I kind of doubt that you want that
2:00 holy crap look at the guy on the right, he must be at least 5ft tall
Regarding camping axes, I have a preference for multiple functions and a thin blade for light weight and easy cutting. When you camp, unless you intend on splitting wood, a thin blade is very useful for chopping nice branches, very small trees, and a hammer back is great for everything you need to hit but don't need to cut. Also, a small reverse hook blade beneath the chin of a thin axe is good for cutting rope/cord/fishing line(not essential, but a nice luxury to have).
I can say that The axe you made is quite in line with my tastes. Very lovely.
Maybe much like you have done with medieval weapons you should study up on some the history and patterns of axes and re create them in future projects. There is a rich world wide history of axe patterns.
A Sparth axe would be wonderful!
5, 4, 2, it’s blade forging time ... NEEDS TO BE A SHIRT NOW.
My dad was an apprentice under Bryan the man you said helped you to learn more about blacksmithing i remember helping him use the blowers to work the forge at the time in Brandon Mississippi
Am I alone in the feeling that Alec should keep the challenges going? Maybe not with prizes all the time, but a cool little how to video and off we go. It's been awesome trying to replicate the idea while making it creative and my own.
Either way, thank you so much Alec! These 4 weeks have been amazing fun to watch and join.
Alec needs a "Five Four Two" maker's mark to stamp on his sillier or messed up projects XD
*"FIVE, FOUR, TWO, IT'S BLADE FORGING TIME!!!"*
I need a 5-4-2 blade forging time t shirt
5-4-2-err-3
I am so confused by Alec's counting skills 😂
...... metric
no one you know here what?
Must be that Monty Python influence...
@@oscarpeters5309 he was doing the count down in metric. (Its a metric vs imperial joke)

My Phone at 4am: LADIES AND GENETELMEN WELCOME BACK TO THE WORKSHOP!!!!
15 years old. I recently started on my rasp knife project. It's coming out really well. Chamfer done on 1 side. 1 to go. Handle made out of oak and rosewood. Finger grooves in the handle and all. Gonna make a leather sheethe
I think one of the major issues for people new to forging, and even those that have been forging for years, is the order of operations when you get into forging shapes that you don't typically forge, and this causes a breakdown in progress. I've seen people, and even done it myself, give up on projects because they got bogged down by not knowing how to break down the order of operations for a specific shape. It can become complex and confusing. But I find getting a chalk board or even just a sheet of paper, and filling out the steps:
1. draw the beginning shape
2. draw the next shape to work toward
3. and the next,
4. etc.
And try to come up with the best steps possible, and in which order, for getting to a certain goal. Sit down and think about what would be best to do first and then go from there, making sure you don't get snagged up by doing something first that will make doing the next step more difficult, or if a first step will make a later step easier. But the main thing, at least at first, is to just jump in and do some work and get a feel for what it all entails, get comfortable with it (some blacksmiths have to do this after going a while without forging) and just make something random, just move the metal and get used to the work.
Whoever is doing the music and video editing deserves a pay raise.
I think it's time for another quenching tank. Really cool hatchet/camping axe! Looking forward to this challenge.
Two small suggestions I have for hanging an axe head, putting a handle on an axe, is when driving the handle into the axe head it is much more effective to hold the handle of the axe upside down and hit the bottom of the axe handle with a mallet. Instead of the axe head popping off like you might think it actually drives the handle into the axe. Another suggestion for properly hanging an axe head is to have one or two small metal wedges driving into the eyelet of the axe handle at the top perpendicular to the wooden wedge, this allows for the expansion of the wood forward and backward in addition to the expansion of the wood side to side for a much tighter and sturdier fit.
There’s something so gratifying about how you lined those hammer blows up with the music. Great stuff here.
You said that with so much confidence the first time you didn't know what you did wrong 😂. " 5..4..2.. its blade forging time!"
Alec, your energy and your big heart is something really inspiring!
If you guys want to see Will then follow his Instagram. He streams constantly and always showing his work. We been asking him to do his own thing and blow up. 🤙
Enjoyed the thinking that goes into the function of an axe. Axes are the line between traditional tool and weapon. You have spent a lot of time making swords and knives which is cool, but how about a series of Axes? There are so many types of axes for different applications and I would find it quite interesting to reflect on how you go about making any tool (or weapon) for it's specific role.
First of all, love the channel. Pleased your not just a one trick pony and are now doing a multitude of engineering projects. I love the shape of that axe. Think the handle would just look so much better with abit of oil to set of the hickory. Not so keen on the blacksmiths finish. Have a great week guys
No matter what happens Alec; please never ever change.
Hey Alec, I’m a big fan from Brazil. Your videos are saving my quarantine. Thank you so so much my man! 👊👊
The information on the website is amazing. Keep it up Alec!
Ok, my hobby is woodworking so this is a bit of a pet-peeve for me. Would you quit blackening every wood handle you put on your projects? Wood has some wonderful grain qualities and you burning them obscures the beauty of the wood!
Whats about Will? Havent seen him for quite a while.
I was wondering the same thing maybe hes with Sam????
He is at home cuz yknow corona
@@jakobwidh4851 if that's the reason then why is that other guy there striking for him and someone is there on the camera?
Isn’t that Will walking through the shot at 5:20?!?

You need to send an anvil to the boys at How Ridiculous so you can have a real Anvil Drop!
“Sharp hammer” why does that make so much sense???
i'm so proud all of you are wearing ear protection.

Unfortunately I don't have a forge but what I do have is an old iron Bowie knife. Some bogg Oak and the little bit of tools that I'm going to use to put it back together. A little restoration project
I'd love to see you guys making a timbersports competition axe, you know, these shiny razor sharp woodblock-killers. Wouldn't that be WONDERFUL? Who's with me? ;)
Looks like a great axe! I use an Estwing at work to blaze trees while surveying property lines on logging projects.
Absolutely great camp ax size- great to strap on saddle for the trail
Not gonna lie...if Alec started making that axe I'd totally buy one!!
Would love to see a Hammer with the handle made of yew like an english longbow. Sapwood facing front and Heartwood facing back might have a pleasent kind to hands spring.
(Sure you could barter with a bowyer) Cheers for the learning
Did Alec say “Anvil DROP”…? …from how high up, and onto what? I can’t wait for that one🤪🤣
I’ve seen this one... it doesn’t work out well for the coyote.
@@effectivetactics422 well played sir
The info site you created is amazing. Thank you guys!
The materials you have on the site are great! One thing i would love to know more about would be some finishes for steel that can prevent rust? I have made some bottle openers for friends, but soon it turns out they are rusting quite easily.
Could you please make a video describing different metal types and their uses?
I'm not a blacksmith and it wouldn't actually help me in my day-to-day, I am just really interested and love learning about the whole process!
Would love to see you guys venture into crucible steel and make something with it :) Crucible steel leaves such a gorgeous and different pattern every time
I like it! I was worried you would take all the Forging marks out of it, but you didn't :) looks sweet!
are the forge doors working like they should yet?
You, my friend, are asking the real questions.
I don't see a bucket full of stone hanging from a puley ;) so it must be fine
That will be covered in "Making The Forge Doors Part 174"
THANK YOU! I’ve been waiting to make myself a throwing axe for a while now and this has given me lots of useful tips. I’m looking forward to start on a new project!
Alec: "If Liam is going to start making hammers, I'm going to start making axes!"
As we all know, Alec is renowned for his math skills. The "5, 4, 2" was actually carefully calculated.
3) 5 - 0 = 5
2) 5 - 1 = 4.
1) 4 - 2 = 2.
0) 2 - 3 = -1.
Counting for intellectuals.
Or he just forgot "numbers are hard"
A good ole battle of Stelter vs Steele would be awesome. Missing those!!
Alec is never going to see this but you don't have to place your axe head on anything while hanging it, you just snug it up so when you lift it doesn't fall off then hitting the palm swell with a mallet will drive the handle into the head without the possibility of damaging your axe head on a hard surface or vise versa
Oh Alec, you're back.
I didn't mind the other host, but I enjoy your material/content more.
Nice!!! I've just gotten into researching vintage axes and hatchets, and restoring a few. Been wonder if you'd ever make one soon, and you delivered :)
What a challenge this has been! Thank you for launching it, i was having a blast in participating. 😁
For the next time, i would like to see some more beginner-friendly challenges. I did okay on the botlle opener. The tongs... still working on those today 😅 and for the hammer, i only had a ground one to send in. Would be nice, if the learning curve was a little steeper.
Keeo up the awesome content! 😁
Thanks for this contest alec. I had a blast competing in it. You should do more of them only make it so people like me with limited supplies can have a fair shot at winning. Great fun though.
0:59 Thank you for specifying you use an old designated set of calipers to do your layout work! It is a really easy and quick way to layout your projects.. however so many people don't realize that can damage precision instruments. Keep your good tools nice for your precision tasks, and your worn tools for the "not so precise" operations lol! Love your stuff... stay "stuck in"
Alec: this time on 2
Also Alec : 5,4,3 it’s blade forging time
A camp Axe for pride month, love it!
Honestly, this challenge is a lot of fun. I like how it challenges to test our capabilities and limits as well as where to improve in our work(s) :)
Love watching all your videos! I don't know if you have any interest but I would love to see you build a traditional-style barone. Maybe in Damascus
Mr. Steele is always kicking Axe!👍🔥
My buddy Conrad won! Congratulations dude!
You've been a huge inspiration in my life and i would like to start forging soon
Camp axes are ... Fabulous!
"It's BLADE FORGING TIME"
"Did that look cool?" Lol I like that you guys left that in. You're a good dude Alec, don't let anyone tell you any different. Lol and yes it was cool.
Do you have a shop for the stuff you make?
Edit: nvm, I found your shop and my debit card told me to run
Liam Hoffman’s time to shine
You should make a flaming hammer. where its made of a really heat conductive metal so as you forge with it. it starts glowing
Thank you Alec, this has been an awesome 3 weeks sovar. @alecsteele I am very excited to try and attempt this weeks challenge to make an hatchet.
I do not have a striker, but i make a plan. Can't wait to start
Hey Alec, your content is awesome and relaxing as anything can be. You should try forging a Polish Husar Sabre. Lots of love from Poland, keep up the great content
Hi Alec, I love your videos, and particularly loved your katana a few years a go. So i have a suggestion. Please could you make a russian cossack sword? They are really cool. Similar to katana, just a different handle. Thanks!!!
That's a nice ax there Alec! Well done! Thank you for sharing this with us. 👍😁
i love the painted auto hammer! so bad ass
That smaller piece you showed us would have been a hatchet size. I wanna start forging when I get my new place.
Perfect video, since I'm also working on a battle axe. I don't forge it, I'm drilling and cutting it from an old axe head, but hey better than nothing :D
Alex i just recently started forging and you have been a big inspiration for me and thank you for making videos for us to enjoy.
I’ll buy it, would be awesome to have an Alec Steele original
Dude I'm amazed how even you taking off a belt from the rack looks awesome hats off to your team
Could you have possibly soaked the haft in water, then compressed the head-end to allow the wood through as the wood dried and expanded to fit the hole and lock it in place?
Please make Mah'alleinir next. It’s the perfect project for you.
Alex! You destroy the beauty of the when you burn it!
Iv heard Alec talk about Brian Brazeal for the last few years, so why has he not been to the workshop yet
It's been a while since I looked through his old stuff, but iirc he trained under Brian, so been there, done that. But I suppose a visit to say hi and maybe colab would be interesting enough to warrant a video once restrictions lift.
Edit: Right, answered before looking at the video and yeah, he does say in the vid that Brian was his mentor. And yes, if he's in Africa rn that would make it hard to visit.. XD
If I understand right, it would be because Brian Brazeal is still teaching people how to forge over in Africa.
I think its Brown Brazil

Beautiful job on the head. Not a fan of the flame blackened handle though. I like the normal wood tone.

ahhh normal scheduling resumes :) bash smash = something wonderful
Утилитарный топор, без изысков. Всё как я люблю. Круто! Мне нравится)
Fantastic build!
Beautiful axe!! Next time leave a wood colored line at the top under the head. Great axe
Hey the music was on point today.
When making demascus steel, have you ever tried WD40 instead of Flux. It is supposed to keep scale from building up inside between the layers. Try it and see. Not as messy either.
I love your work and I hope you keep going on true the hard times in the world thx
Is Will OK?? I miss him working with you in the shop.
His Instagram is way better. Hes always streaming his work.

That’s a cool axe . Your super talented ✌️✌🏿✌🏽❤️🇦🇺❤️
Wow u realy do hard work to convert a piece of iron in a beauty
That size is what we call a "boy's" axe in Oz. Nice job and ideal size for a camp axe.
