- Here is the much anticipated update on Shelby’s health. Shelby, our blue and gold macaw, has started plucking her feathers, and chewing the ends of her feathers off, and alongside this she was losing weight and not behaving like her normal self. After much time, money and effort spent on trying to find out why, we think we may have discovered a cause and it is entirely our fault. The reason we are sharing this information is to educate others on our mistakes, and maybe highlight a possible care concern you may be facing yourself.
Birds are messy, far messier than anyone really understands until they have them, and learning how messy macaws really are will help you decide if a macaw is right for you.
The reason we are sharing this is to update everyone, and we would appreciate respectful and understanding comments. Hate, negative comments or abuse will be deleted by an outside party not associated with Shelby or Tommi.
When you realise something is different with your pet parrot, you should always first speak with a vet, and carry out the necessary checks to determine any health concerns within the bird.

I knew it! I said mold!!! It got me deathly sick. Use vinegar to naturally kill mold without the use of products
Oooh black mold- bad stuff. I've never heard the bit about leaving the black mold "undisturbed" - definitely something that gets flagged immediately/has to be treated asap in the US. Would be really bad for the humans as well. Good to get to get to the bottom of this for the whole fam. Let's hope this is it ❤

My heart was in my throat from the last video until I watched this one. I’m happy that you seem to have found the cause of Shelby’s plucking. Everyone can make mistakes, but you’ve done your best and taken accountability. I’m rooting for you all and for Shelby and Tommi to have full, healthy and happy lives. I’ve had my BGM for over 20 years and I’m still learning so much about proper parrot care, so please also allow yourself that bit of compassion too. We can’t always know it all. And I can relate to the feeling of spending thousands of pounds to try to find out what’s wrong with your bird, crying on the drive to the vets, etc. You are lucky to have such wonderful support. Black mold can be deadly. Probably a leak in roof or dampness in room. I use a dehumidifier. You learned and admit your mistakes. But that’s how you learn. She’ll get better soon. I would put another purifier bin there room. I put 2 in the room with HEPA filters and charcoal filters, change every 3 months.

Thank you for recognizing your health involvement too. Your health is paramount to your bird's health or you cannot provide care. If overheating Teflon is a problem for your bird, it's a problem for you too! I think it's important to admit mistakes so others can learn, I applaud your bravery. I took in my Aunt's bee parrot when I was an early teen (prior to internet). I ate dill pickles periodically and she/he loved them. I found myself giving her a little piece every day. She was older and had a seed only diet other than that. I'm pretty confident NOW the dill pickle treat with crazy salt content was the cause. I still feel a bit of guilt over that but I really was taking the best care of her that I knew at the time. The only vet within 50 miles was a farm vet so his solutions were quite limited and diet was not discussed.

If that is a Coway air purifier please check to make sure it isn't an ionising one as they should not be used around parrots.

Yayy to Shelby back on the mend. If that was the cause of Shelbys illness then it was down to complete human error and not neglect. Good on you for being honest but also for other new owners who will learn from this. xx

I’m so happy you have some avenues to explore! It’s great they’re in their own room now also for your health. Our birds have only ever had their own room with air purifier, cleaned daily, airflow, etc. and she still plucks 😢

It's good to see her in a home that is genuinely invested in her care and happiness. The vast majority of bird owners should not be allowed to keep them; they're so social, so smart, so destructive, and so loud. You need to be ready and willing to care for them the ways they truly need. You are essentially adopting a child...who is not only a different species, but not even a mammal. It's always good to see dedicated good parrot parents showing just how difficult raising parrots are. Hopefully that will keep people who shouldn't have birds from getting them and accidentally subjecting them to terrible abuse just as a result of ignorance.
Thank you for sharing this important information. I am always so very concerned about the air quality because of their sensitive circulatory system. I have an air filter in each room and still am super careful about what is in the air with the birds. I am so happy you figured out what was causing the issues and hope it won't be a habit and she will stop plucking and fully heal. I believe sincerely that is the cause (spleen and air sacs?) so good job for figuring it out and making steps to change the environment. Happy now, have been so worried about her
Thank you so much for your message. I feel ashamed about it, and although it may not be the cause, I’m 99% sure. They are so so sensitive to the environment and I should have taken more care but I’m glad we’ve learnt
@@ShelbyTheMacaw do NOT be ashamed. I understand that feeling because we who care so deeply for our feathered friends place a big responsibility for their health and well-being. I can't do outdoor flight training and I feel guilty because I know it would be good for her. But seriously, an avian vet should have told you to look at her environment because those are clear signs of poor health due to something in the air. She is in good hands and none of us is perfect. I am criticized for having a bird because they all should be free however we are destroying their natural habitat and endangering their very existence in the wild. Sorry for the long reply but I believe you did your best to figure out what was wrong and now you know that you have to address the entire area more frequently. Good knowledge for EVERY person who is owned by a bird of any size. Be well and I will be happy to see more videos of your birds in free flight!

I've been wondering how she was doing. I almost asked when Mikey & Mia posted their parrot party but thought it would be inappropriate. I'm so glad her tests came back negative with everything. Hopefully what you said is the problem and now she will get back to normal quickly. Can't wait to see the new aviary setup.
This is a big lesson I learn from you. Because I’m plan to get a macaw soon. I’m so grateful that the video you upload I watching most of them, save me make a lot of mistakes in future. To have a bird special big bird is a life commitment, make me feel like even more serious then marriage 😵💫😭
What an amazing mom you are it takes a big person to admit the mistakes you have made Pat yourself on the back and it only gets better from here if you treat your pets this well your children will do great things with parents that admit when they are wrong the skys the limit and your family will only soar from here literally
Hi, very very important. Plz read and tell all parrot lovers: Avoid the "egg cardboards" at all cost. They carry diseases, parasites and deadly fungus from the egg farms. Please never let your parrot touch one and even be close to. Thanks for the lovely videos and all the best, Fari from Scotland

Our male Eclectus (Mambo) has been living with us for 20 years now (Australia).
We hope this feedback "Comment" helps other pet parrot owners, as this is why and how we have had no difficulty with Mambo 🦜plucking his feathers:
1) Early in Mambo being our young, hand-raised, tame pet parrot family member we noticed that Mambo would intentionally bath itself when given its morning fresh clean drinking water 💦 (fresh water also given late afternoon before his tea), but he would choose to bathe himself only once weekly, and would also get our attention too!
2) We early read that the Eclectus parrots' original natural habitat is the Tropical Rain Forests of North Queensland and the Tropical Highland Rainforests of PNG (Papua New Guinea), & some of the tropical Pacific Islands. That’s when we thought that they would live with showers of rain 🌧 in their original tropical rainforest habitat, and we put this together with Eclectus’s also being a very high DANDER bird that Mambo would probably enjoy, at his chosen time to bath, with us also giving him a gentle shower spray with an indoor pot plants water 💦 spray bottle, set to the widest lightest water spray setting.
Well yes indeed! Mambo LOVES his weekly bath 🛁 plus light water-spray shower all over and under his body -- he even spreads his wings wide so we can spray under both his wings and both sides of his chest. Mambo lets us know when he's had enough of the water spray by. heading to his roosting-nightly high sleeping perch. Mambo prefers this weekly wash in the morning, and he happily chats away after his bath and water spray.
So pet parrot lovers, our take on why Eclectus parrots 🦜 (& some other parrots too!) have a reputation for being feather-pluckers is NOT necessarily a nervousness condition, nor consequent to a health issue or boredom either, but rather with their high dander skin-replacing body, the build-up of dander becomes irritating to them. Thus the scratching and pecking at their irritated skin (with feathers coming out while trying to relieve themselves of the dander skin irritation) is why parrots understandably scratch & peck their skin.
I would be scratching my skin too if I didn't shower daily, and I don't even have a high-dander skin!🤗 And yes, the stress-factor to the parrot with the DANDER irritation can understandably impact their general health and wellbeing, and happiness!
This DANDER skin irritation probably adds to bad behaviour, like screeching, etcetera.
We have 3 pet parrots, and they have never had the problem of plucking feathers.
They all live indoors in our home with us to keep them safe from outside predators (snakes, rats, and predatory birds - e.g. Butcher Birds, Magpies). I have had pet birds most of my 70 year life - and approximately 100 racing pigeons as a young teenager and belonged in the latter 1960’s to the Brisbane QLD Racing Pigeon Federation (the best I got was a 3rd place 🥉 in a long distance pigeon race back to their loved home lofts -- birds love an easy resort-lifestyle and security).
Enjoy wonderful pet birds, as they love human company too!

She hasn't yet, but we will be keeping an eye on things for the time being
So I had two Lineolated parakeets die of ABV this year. I tested all of my birds, but I’ve been also giving my entire flock lysine (with the assistance of my vet), on their food every day. Did that for a week or two, then tested the birds for ABV. All the birds that were in contact with the ABV positive birds, came back negative. Even worked on a several lovebirds that were in contact with PBFD positive birds. All birds test results came back negative for ABV and PBFD. It’s not a coincidence- it works. Highly recommend giving it a try for anyone who has PBFD and ABV positive birds.

@@ShelbyTheMacaw it absolutely is! I’ve emailed lafeber to ask them if they are willing to test it in a larger capacity than I’m able to, but the results have been far too consistent to be a coincidence, and warrants further investigation.
Right now I have a friend who is testing it on her PBFD positive birds, and she’s going to retest them in a few weeks to see if they’re still positive.
Why don’t you do birthday parties. You can call your business birdday party. ;)

As soon as you showed the mold I was thinking you found the source of your problem. For future reference and those who follow you and own birds and children contact someone who has an up to date asbestos and mold abatement ticket which you will be surprised by the knowledge of such harmful substances that can effect children and animals that have been in contact with said things and more. I have a close relative who is a veterinarian and when I wanted an honest answer to my dogs health, I could always rely on the answer as just what is going on. I was also told by 3+ veterinarians that you won't get told the truth all the time because if your animal has got something that can not be improved or fixed what are you going to do? You will get a lot of people that will tell you, nah that guy doesn't know what he's talking about, we can help your animal and will only cost 8 or $900. And about 6 to 10 months later the animal is worse. I have loved wildlife and just about anything that breaths all of my life and I remember a vet telling Dad that anything you do from here on is futile and don't eat the meat. The previous vet said yes I think we can get her back on her feet but just to be safe don't eat the meat. If you think we live in a world where the medical system tells us the truth all the time, well in all due respect you need to wake up. I can't tell you how much I love your animals and enjoy your videos. I also am aware that I am quite a bit different than most people, but I am very happy to say that. So just remember that the most expensive vet is not always the best nor is the cheapest. Honesty is a rare thing these days so good luck.
