On the other hand, customers haven't changed ( they've always had a gripe. ( Nordstroms used to take any returns )but workers' attitudes and resentment towards customers have.
Workers hate the idea of, gasp, serving someone else,( who contributes to your salary.).
There are people born to customer service, who appreciate " service with a smile " and who don't want their customer to go elsewhere . Who actually like people.
But, in reality, these resentful and belabored - working -a- no -job- job , emotionless millenia are to be resented. ( about that college degree and those loans )
They whine about no " jobs", ( you mean real work), so they work what really are jobs that most robots can do ..... and they resent " those insane customers "( who are buying cheap Chinese- made crapola).
      A vicious cycle.
Immarurity is joining in on the hate fest; maturity is finding upsides to endure , AND to keep looking for that next secure employment that brings some joy.

@@lindaleelaw5277 Actually studies have shown the attitude of customers has become worse in recent years. So customers have changed. Furthermore, over the last few decades, wages have stagnated even as production has increased. So those who used to be employed in those positions simply are fed up and dont want to take it anymore. This Great Resignation is the result. It is a long overdue labor market correction. Those who aren't sympathetic to labor always say "go find a better job". So now they are. And poverty wage companies now whine they can't find people.

@@lindaleelaw5277 you've either never worked in the service industry (food, customer w/e), or not long enough. There are actually ungrateful people out there who look down on customer service people, we're treated worse than you think. We're screamed at for something that's beyond our control, be it company policies, items our of stock, etc. Most of the time you're talking to crew members, not managers. The managers order the stock, kit the employees. Sometimes, things are limited offers and, like Ollie's, when they're gone, they are gone. Yelling at the workers isn't going to magically bring it back.

I'm a travel agent. Got a call from a client who just boarded her cruise ship and was in her cabin, looking out the window. She was angry because she said she paid more for an outside view and she could not see the ocean, just the dock. Actually, the phrase "the customer is always right" has nothing to do with retail. It refers to economics. The supply and demand chart specifically. Where when supply is high, but demand low, the price is low and vice versa. The phrase was coined do point out the low demand forcing prices down. Somehow it got put into retail and gas been abused (like everything else) by stupid consumers ever since. Yes, I work in retail -- food service to be exact and yes I've heard this phrase used by idiots a lot. Especially when they argue over tax. See, in my state, necessities are not taxed, however, restaurants charge sales tax as this isn't considered a necessity.

Another time, I worked in Barnes and noble and a lady was paying her $7.00 total in all change while I had a long line and her 3 kids kept moving the change around as the mother was counting so I ended up getting confused and couldnt keep up with the amount so once she was done, I took all the change and I started counting and the mother yelled at me,gave me an attidue, belittled me, for me counting because her kids kept playing and messing up the change while she was counting so I had to count it.🤨

Customers with kids who aren't behaving and the parent(s) aren't correcting their kids. I naturally take charge of their kids, even sometimes picking them up, telling them "no". Parents never get assertive with me as at that time I act like they're not even there as the parents.
One time I was on the clock and holding a woman's child in my arms and she was telling me "sorry" as I chewed her out for catching her child midair as he fell head first out the shopping cart. I caught him upside down, put him to my side and tore her a new one. Put her child in her arms, turned around and walked off.
Another time a little girl was wanting to stand on our pumpkins and I told her stop. It happened twice. Third time she done it I picked her up, cradled her in my arms and carried her to her Dad sitting down in the adjoining bank where I plopped her in the seat next to him.
Dad said. "See, you got in trouble."
      She didn't do it again.
Once parents don't want to correct their kids, I take over. At that point the parents back off when the manager (me) is helping them, while also managing their kids.

Had a customer get pissed when he came in more then a month after Christmas to return a nephew Christmas card. He said he hadn't seen the kid so he wanted to get his money back. (Dude! Are you never going to see this kid again? Has next year's Christmas been cancelled?? Just pack it up with your Christmas stuff and you won't have to buy one next year!)
Anyway, I tell him no. Our policy was once the holiday cards come down (and we leave Christmas cards up for like two weeks after Christmas) there are no more refunds on them. He demands to see the department manager to which I reply "I am the department manager." He responds with he wants a different manager." So, I call the floor manager over, let him explain to her what he wants and then watch as she points to me and says "It's her department. It's her call." I put the card back in the bag, hand it to him and tell him "Have a nice day."

The students were given a "budget" for the month, and had to stay within that budget, while paying all of their monthly expenses. One woman signed a withdrawal on her husbands sole savings account and yelled the house down when we wouldn’t give her the money.
A very rigid old Priest used to come in always complaining.. one day he stopped himself while complaining, in order to add his insult to how the bank employees dressed so poorly.
I think he referred to a proof teller working at far end, behind a higher counter. She had large bosom and unless she wore turtlenecks, there was a bit of cleavage.
His eyes saw that far? He said just the girls dressed shabby. (We worked in a coal mining town). No one was going to wear their “ best clothes” to touch coal soiled cheques the men brought in from the mines. I defended the staff of course- diplomatically…

I told them their coupons didn't work at the store because the barcodes on those coupons didn't even register on our system and I was confused as hell they even tried to do so to begin with, but they kept insisting that since it was for the same items, it didn't really matter and that I should change the price manually. Not that I did because getting chewed out by my manager wasn't on my to-do list that day. Eventually, after they got angry and yelled in face and more refusals on my part, they realized I wasn't going to give them the coupon price, so they told me to take their entire cart full of items back and left. I left Toys R Us years ago when on Christmas Eve a customer came in and demanded the bike he looked at last week. He hadn't reserved it and it was Christmas Eve. We'd since sold out of that model, obviously, he hasn't reserved and it's Christmas. He blamed me for "ruining Christmas for his son" and when I clapped back it wasn't my fault he hasn't reserved the item or purchased it when he saw it last week he grabbed a random bike and threw it at me.
My manager apologized to the customer for MY behaviour and I quit on the spot and took him through a tribunal. I filled for assault on the customer and won, which I used the money to take the manager through a tribunal, which I won but I lost more financially than I'd made but it was still worth doing because they can both play in traffic and I was too pissed to not be petty about it. But the worst part was some kid didn't get a Christmas because his pathetic excuse of a father waited until the 24th to sort out his present.

I've worked in customer service most of my life. One highlight was a woman who would come into Sbux, get a frap with very little ice. Fine. She would bounce back and forth between whipcream or not. Finally announced she was lactose intolerant. I couldn't explain to her that (at the time) there was no dairy free fraps. No matter how long I tried. She then told other baristas that I was intentionally putting dairy in her fraps. (This was a pre-mix) She threw the frap onto the door, and it being winter, what a fun mess to clean.
Last story, a woman, older and wealthy, would come into my store speaking french. But would become infuriated, screaming in french, because we didn't speak French. This is inside an Italian themed store in Chicago... 😮‍💨

Not an employee but a customer. Almost two years into the pandemic now, almost two years since registering every customer by name, surname and phone number (only made available to health care authorities for contact tracking purposes in case of Covid) became the norm for restaurants and other places (at least here in Europe).
Yesterday I heard my husband making a restaurant reservation on the phone and going "yes, of course, I understand, no problem" in the saddest tone. I thought he was being told the restaurant was closed or something. Afterwards, he explained me that the staff person had been extensively making unnecessary apologies for asking for his phone number. He had probably been extensively insulted moments earlier by some a*hole customer who blamed it on him for applying a freaking LAW in EMERGENCY times. This made us feel so sorry for all those workers who are used as a punchball by bitter, angry, exhausted crowds.
Moreover, the people who gets so nitpicking about their privacy is probably the same who posts pics of their toddlers using the potty on a public page. I wish their kids/grandchildren will sue them on their 18th birthday morning.

This woman comes in, frantic, saying that 'she had to be at a wedding in (a city that was at least a two hour drive from our town) in an hour and needed hundreds of photos developed immediately because she was late and it was for a gift.

She looked at us and screamed “ what was I supposed to do there was a bee on it!?!?!“ I responded with “ you could have put it in the trash can…now there’s soda Everywhere “ and I took myself on a walk before my boss had to tell me to.
I drove the train giving guided tours for the Zoo. We had a group of special needs adults waiting under the trees for the next train instead of standing in the line, to make it easier for boarding the wheel chairs etc. in the front cars. As they started boarding, two women and a child, not from the line of general guests waiting ( they hadn’t been told to board yet and were patiently waiting for our special group ) jumped into the back row of the last car. I walked down to them and said “ I’m sorry, we are boarding this group first then the line. “ the older woman (grandma?) snapped at me “we aren’t moving!” I replied “ we are boarding special needs first then…” and she yelled at me “ We are special !!” And refused to move. About 50 people were inline waiting and heard all of this and it wasn’t a nice response. I let another driver take that tour.
Oh yes there’s more! During the night holiday light events , I’m on hour 12 standing by a stingray pool, a very angry woman comes up to me and says “ do you know how bad the parking lot is?!?” Uh no I don’t was my response …

If you've never been a cashier in a busy store (any kind of store) you have no idea how hard the job is. You get paid next to nothing and get treated like you're nothing. My 2 worst customer stories are the guy who let a huge fart and then smirked while I gagged, (I wanted to throat-punch him), and the lady who protested wearing a mask by pointing out there was "noone in the store". Nope, just me and 5 other employees and an optometrist, you wackjob...
