Drum Carding Fleece Locks

- It's time I took my washed fleeces and got them in shape for spinning. Today we're going to work with a cross fleece (not angry, just a crossbreed) and run it through my drum carders. Let's go!
I absolutely enjoyed this demonstration! I have been spinning for a few years and just finally got a drum carder a couple of months ago. You hit every point I have found most important about drum carding, including adjustments, in one video!! Thank you so much!🙏
I'm so glad you enjoyed the video! I love my drum carder and I'm pretty hard on everything I use so I figured I'd better learn how to make all the adjustments lol.
So glad to see I'm not the only one who has cats that have to investigate everything ! ha ha thanks for the demo have subbed
Welcome! I think the cats are the actual stars of the channel lol.
I will probably say this every time, but I’m just so fascinated with everything you do. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for watching. I'm so glad you find me entertaining.
I think its staunch fibers that do the knuckle saving doffer x
I have to get one. With my lack of coordination it's almost a necessity.
Your adjusting the Tynes was most helpful!
I don't even remember doing that in this video lol. It's a great trick though.
@@bffiberarts It's certainly something I will remember. I have been reading and watching UA-cams for days, waiting for my drum carder, and I am so glad I finally "ran into" your UA-cam podcast.
@@Bobbieliz welcome! Things sometimes get crazy but we have fun.
What a beautiful batt thank you for the video tamsin x
Omg the Romney polwarth fleece is gorgeous I cant wait to wash and process mine and spin it up x
It's beautiful all though this fleece leans more towards the Romney.
@@bffiberarts Romney is beautiful too though x
I'm not disappointed at all. I love all wools for different reasons which is why the variety we can get is so amazing.
@@bffiberarts I totally agree x
I’m having a heck of a time with my Louet drum carder. No matter how I adjust it, it doesn’t spread the fibres on the drum well. It just deposits them on top.
I've never used a louet but I'd reach out to customer service and see if they have any suggestions for what might be going on.
I wish you showed how to clean the carder. But otherwise, it was a very informative video, like always! I look forward to the next one!
I can do a video on that in the future! Thanks for the suggestion.
Hi hope things are good with you. Great video thank you
I have got some Gotland mix fleece (not sure what it’s been bred with) which I have just washed. Do I card it as you have just done or do I feed it onto the drum carder from the cut or the tip end ?
@suefisher5531 either way will work. If you're trying to keep it organized more like a top than a roving, then just make sure you feed them on the same way everytime and note how they align as you take the batt off so you keep feeding it in the same direction. It'll work better if you open up the locks a bit before you feed them on and usually starting at the cut end will work better but try both and see what works for you.
@@bffiberarts thank you so much It’s all a learning curve I’ll give it a go 🥰
you just reminded me that i have about four whole fleeces that have been washed and are waiting to be carded since last Spring/Summer. i need to get that done soon so i can justify buying a fleece or two this Spring. i'm on the lookout for a breed study starting with raw wool, if anyone knows of such a thing... or if someone would be willing to organize one.
.... only four? I have a lot more. I need to get my butt in gear lol.
@@bffiberarts i saw your fleece haul(s) last year. mine was not nearly as insane. i've already spun up a couple of them, and i have a couple more carded and ready to go, plus the four waiting to be carded.
'twould seem that i was consoling myself with wool in 2020. pretty certain i was not alone in that.
I'm with ya. We need to amuse ourselves.
Looks great, but you have to lift the brush before you take the batt off.
@@brigittewiatowski28 there's no brush on this drum carder.
I get fussy with picking the fiber off my drum too hahaha xx
It's ridiculous. I'll sit there and pick every little bit off lol.
@@bffiberarts yep me too hahah x
Hello, I am new to picking and bought an upright picker.
What you’re doing by hand in his video here is what I can do in my picker, correct? I can then run it through my Drum Carder?
Yes exactly. Just be careful with fine fibers because the picker can tear them apart and you'll have nepps in your batts.
Your drum carder is so easy to adjust compared to mine x
I love brother though too be fair I haven't ever used anything else.
@@bffiberarts I'm not even sure what mine is I got it second hand xx
As long as it works it doesn't matter.
Locks. Very short wool cut from the fleece by shearers. Either short wool from around the points or second cuts caused when shearers lift the handpiece off the skin and then shear the short fires left on the skin to tidy up. Why use those? Why not use staples?
They're not short or second cuts. Locks of fiber are staples. Same thing, different word.
@@bffiberarts I've owned 3000 sheep & at shearing time locks are under the skirting table & sold in bales as short lengths. Fleeces that are made up of staples, are classed separately.
@rosertaylor6139 perhaps you're in a different country and that's how it works there, but on my channel we do not get hung up on terms that are used differently. If you find that distressing then perhaps this isn't the channel for you.
