Such a marked difference between the finishes of the Mod Podge and the spray varnish- Absolutely No Contest and your tiles look exactly like the Real Thing!

I worked on some miniature mosaic yesterday and made it to printing out a pattern (I have patchwork pattern files of all kind) but then gave up when it came to cutting them out. OF COURSE I need to paint the BACK! It seems so simple now, but it didn't even occur to me 😂
Hi, great video again. When I wanted terra cotta hexagonal tiles for my floor I began using clay, disaster ! Then I decided to use card so I cut them out of thickish kraft card (aliexpress) (( wonderful product)) and laid them down on upturned masking tape to hold them in place after covering them in poly filler slightly unevenly. I then sanded them lightly and painted them in all different shades of terracotta, brown and ochres. I then tidied them up a bit and gave them a coat of varish before laying them so all the tones mixed. In certain places I used bits of 'tile' like an old repair. I then used filler to grout the gaps and when dry I cleaned them up with fine wire wool and then waxed them with a slightly dark wax that stained the grouting. I had no idea what I was doing at the time. All around the room I laid square 'terra cotta' tiles before infilling with the hexagonal ones. I must admit that for a first time I was fairly chuffed ! The day I realised that miniatures are mostly a 'cheat' made me lighten up on what materials I used. When I first cut out all the thick wood for my house the weight was such that once finished with the roof, the floors and tiles and acessories it would take a crane to lift it ! I than began using 3 or 5 mm mdf and thick card to line the walls. I actually laid the floor on a piece of kraft card cut to the shape of the floor then when finshed I glued it to the floor of the house. I even made a swedish roombox in one day as a challenge using only card in different thickeness and painting it all white before dulling the colour to make it look older and more 'swedish'. It did warp slightly but it was fun to let go and be more adventurous. Sadly I had to move at the begiining of covid into a huge old house that needs everything doing to it so after making a lovely attic room dedicated to miniatures I didn't go into it, no time.

I saw someone made very convincing slate with that, years ago. You mentioned the cardboard roombox, I've been wanting to do something similar for a long time (well, maybe not in one day, that's just not in my nature) but use only cardboard for a roombox. I've even been saving all kinds of cardboard boxes for this purpose but have just never had the time to start this. One day...
Go for it! 😃 I have never used resin, I should try that out some day. I imagine that would work very well also as you can apply it very precisely and it leaves a beautiful raised and shiny coat. I recently bought some resin for someone else to use (in a class in Tune) and there is some left in the bottle so I can try it out. It was rather expensive though so spray varnish may be the cheaper option.

Of course, I was doing everything wrong, too much spackle, too big an area at once and of course too much water on my cloth!! So I have subscribed and will enjoy seeing more of your videos! Thank you Lois! I hope you will get your grouting done now. I suppose bricks can be a bit more difficult to grout because they are not smooth (depending on the material used of course). You could spray the bricks with a matt varnish first, before grouting. And you can colour the spackle with a bit of paint mixed in. But maybe I'm saying things you already know. Have fun with your build!
Thank you Karin! Do a test piece first, so you know how your paper and the spray varnish 'behave', and make sure the varnish has dried thoroughly before grouting. 🙂

Often people use rougher paper or egg carton to simulate stone. You could use a matt varnish and then colour the spackle for the grouting with a little bit of acrylic paint. 😃

I know. I am currently made a doll house and it took a few weeks, but the result is not as detail as yours. I had just made the house, not even the furniture! Yours are amazing!
Yes, you can change the colour by adding pigments. The wall filler I use will take acrylic paint and you could try inks as well. However, I don't think you will get it really black, as you are adding colour to white it will turn grey. If you add a lot of paint or ink it will change the consistency of the grout. You will have to do some tests first. Also, make sure your paper tiles are sealed well, so the colour of the grout doesn't affect the tiles.
Thank you for the advice. I'm using 8x11 paper, so its a big area, but I can't get the "grout" to stay in when I wipe it. Any other ideas for "grout". thanks
@@cynthiaadams1263 Try letting the grout harden a bit longer, and maybe clean the tiles individually a bit before wiping the area you worked on. Also you can try adding some wood glue or tacky glue to help adhesion. Stacey's Miniature Masonry(in the UK) sells real grout mix for miniature tiles, and ik dark grey too. I've never used that for my paper tiles , but it may work. Also you could try very fine sand or bird sand, mixed with glue and a pigment. With everything, test before you use it on your finished floor! I hope it works for you this time!

Is it possible to dye the wall filler? I would really like "black grout".
