Fly Tying the F-Fly Variation

  • The F-Fly is a popular river pattern that accounts for a lot of fish, for other anglers maybe it’s always been a bit of a bogey fly for me.
The F-Fly is a simple pattern a really basic wing made of CDC feathers and usually but not exclusively a peacock herl body. It’s the latter that the fly tyer can change and tweak to their needs. Not only do the natural oils and structure of the CDC feathers from a duck’s anal glands float high on the water, they also look good and help the pattern sit well.
Of course, being less complicated than the TV show Lost also has its advantages. With such a simple tie, you can tailor the sizes and colours really easily. And you can tie them quickly. I have veered of the beaten track with this variation but, I can guarantee its effectiveness. Why not come up with you own variation and post a picture in the comments bellow?

Very nice looking fly Lindsay. Nicely tied too. I'll have to give it a try. Many thanks.

CDC definitely one of my favorite materials. Nice variation on a known pattern. On a hook 16 downwards it sure will be a nice fly for grayling. This one is going to have a place in my box.

Yes, some of our rivers are very good. I personally fish the upper Labe in the north, the Otava around the city of Sušice and the Teplá Vltava in the south.

    Nicely tied!
Im a newbie in the tying area so it was very educational for me.
Not a "perfectionist" fly which I think majority of videos are today and too much information to take in while urs was simple do this n' that.
    Thanks and tight lines!

Hi Lindsay I like the F-fly but I have been using synthetic quills which are adhesive and apart from that have followed your pattern and it’s worked out fine. Out yesterday and tried to fish but it was hopeless there was more people swimming than fish I think, lasted two hours then went home , praying for rain to keep the picnickers away from the loch, and I might catch a fish then. Cheers.Jimf

Please stop promoting that devil's tool lol. Good fly sir! I've been trying with good results using a bubble CDC wing, and the addition of pheasant tail knotted legs on either side. I think it gives a good impression of midge trapped in the surface film. Funny enough I've did some the other day, but did a midas head instead of rabbit dubbing.
