When I 1st read about this game I was super excited about it and i still am. I recently bought it and went to read the rules and learn the set up and I was just so confused. Your review has helped me understand it more. I am excited to do another read through of the rules and play it for the 1st time! Also you guys did such a great job I am now subscribed to your channel and will get notification. Thank you so much!
Great review! Length seems to be the #1 complaint for most reviews thus far. But I really didn't mind. I like a long game, as long as the theme is engaging. And this one's is fantastic. Love the dark art and how well theme/mechanics tie together. My last play garnered mostly positive results. And even though, time wise, it went a bit long, I felt like most of us felt like we had just enough time to accomplish what we'd hoped, if not wishing we'd had one more round. I feel like the only time length should be problematic is when it seems like the game is pushing on long after everyone has done what they needed/wanted to do, and yet we're still slogging along anyway. I really like this one. I'm glad to hear that you seemed to as well.
Thanks for the excellent 1st look! I can't wait to learn more about this game and hopefully see a playthrough at some point. I love euro games, especially ones that are highly thematic. This might be my most highly anticipated game of 2019.
I think if you’re going to compete with the huge sea of games coming out every year, doing something bold like this is probably going to help you stand out in the crowd, even if many people will be put off by the macabre theme. The theme looks really interesting and unique to me, and I’ll definitely be on the lookout for it! Thanks, guys!
Really hope to hear more about game length. Seems to be a pretty common "First"impression is its on the long side... I wonder if its the same after 10 plays or so?
The game should have a copy of Young Frankenstein attached to every box just to round out the experience. Being one of my favourite films, I don't see how I have a choice really. Thank you for an informative First Impression.
Young frankenstein was GREAT. If you want to skip the book and yet still get a decent port to film of the original story, I can't recommend anything better than the 1994 take on it - The one with De Niro playing the monster. It didn't follow the book word for word but it did include the most memorable (formative) scenes, never contradicted the book (in any notable way), and expanded nicely on the parts that got glossed over. It had spunk and ambition and more than that, it had a true fan behind the screenplay/adaptation. Fantastic book to film adaptation.
I got a chance to check this out at Origins, and even though the theme is too dark for me, I still wanted to play it because of how thematic it is. However, 3 hours? Man I might have to pass!
I would like to think (and hope) that 3 hours is maybe the exception and not the rule. At least in our blind playtesting, the average for 4 players was 2 hours. But time will tell if more 'real world' plays are longer (no pun intended), and first games are likely a bit longer. There are also ways to end a game early, such as a player racing to build their monster by using more degraded materials, potentiality ending the game much earlier. Or a player aiding the Captain through humanity cards, advancing him down the story track more quickly. That could end the game as early as round 9. I'll be curious to see the typical length of games once more plays are reported. Great video!
The main change is that there are fewer bump spaces available when there are fewer players. So overall the board is less crowded but if you want something very particular you're in more danger of being shut out. Yes the game should be shorter with fewer players. The lab phase is simultaneous so doesn't change much but the city phases go much faster with fewer players.
Question: Reading the rules, it seems that for some encounter cards, the first player chooses a target among other players. We can see encounter cards at the end of the rules, but I can't tell which of those imply choosing a target player. My question is: does this lead to some "Take that" actions?
I answered this on BGG, but I'll answer here, too. Short answer is no, not in a direct way. But you can be strategic with your target choice based on very limited info. You are not supposed to read the full text of the Encounter card until after you select the target, and even then, outcomes can vary.
entrecruzado I’d love to - unfortunately we didn’t come home with a copy. We all really enjoyed it at Origins though. I’m not personally a fan of ‘The Mind’, but when you game-ify it like the did in Quirky Circuits, the game just really comes alive and became super interesting to me personally!
The Insanity of "Representation"!! SJWs are cancerous. A game made by a bunch of Caucasians , about stories from a bunch of Caucasians, that will be played mainly by fat male Caucasians, does NEED that diversity factor. Good job making the world a better place for us all. Now if you excuse me, I need to get back to making my Journey to the West game set in Detroit. I am excited I think it will earn me a guest appearance on Ellen!!!!
@Callin Flores Thanks for assuming my gender and race!! There is nothing wrong with natural diversity, but when some "communication specialist", not even LISTED in the credits for the game, tries to pander to his SJW friends with his wokeness it comes across as lame and simple. Many PoCs hate this cheapness... Black little mermaid anyone??? Try to come up with you own IP, instead of leeching off someone else! The real creative forces behind this game are Dan Blanchett, Palamarchuk Mikhail, and Tony Sart, all of which make "Weird Al" Yankovic look gangsta. But, thank you for taking their vision and morphing it into your thing.
sjws and people who try to force gender diversity are of the most intolerant I meet. Now all my movies, games, etc I have to sit there and get preached to. I will pass on this game.

This game looks fantastic, theme and mechanics blended so well!
We 100% agree!
Very unique interpretation of the theme, looking forward to playing this
I read through the rule book and I have a question. How do you charge the Leyden jars in order to roll dice? I don’t think it’s very clear.
You can do it on your playerboard as seen at: 8:49. Maybe others, not sure.
@@davidiezzi4150 on occasion an event will charge everyones jars. and IIRC theres a player character who can charge one for free every turn...

It was the first play through - I imagine it can be truncated with repeated plays....90-180 minutes seems right.....maybe 75 minutes with 2.

Just preordered, excellent look at the game guys!
Thanks for the first look! How does it scale for different player counts? Does the board setup change and would the playing time change significantly?

@@videjoe You also start with fewer coins - but Joseph nailed the rest!
How are the components (sorry if I missed it in the video)?
But was it a *fun* three hours? I find that most mid to heavy weight Euros take 2 1/2 to 3 hours anyway.
This was my fav of games I demo'd at Origin's...even with the 20 minutes of gameplay I got I'd really like to see how it plays after 2+ hours
Great review! Great looking game!

You had me at "macabre"
Dang, I really want to preorder this now. Any idea on a release date?
August 30th I think
GenCon!
I glazed over this at Origins, but I watched this cause now it's a must buy!
It's incredibly unique....even as a worker placement game.
Would you recommend this for two players? What would be the estimated playing time?
Sid Savant absolutely recommend for 2p. It will take about 90 minutes for first playthrough. Shorter for subsequent games.
Looks interesting! :-D
I know this is 100% stupid, but my first impression is ... somebody went to the beach, eh? :P
Jesús Couto Fandiño I am Spanish/American Indiana, and tan easily. Hopefully that’s not an issue ;)
Thanks for the review. Looks really goog.
oh my god. .... an interesting game that's not a damn kickstarter.
damn, it's not a kickstarter 😣
Plaid Hat Games strikes gold (or lightning) once again!
I hope you are right, they have not struck gold for quite some time...
This actually looks really cool!
MVM do first impressions of Quirky Circuits too!

I’m not squeamish .... but your description of the game had me 🤢
Amanda Sprunger hahaha! I love it. This theme is great but I’m not overly squeamish.
