Hi Bjorn, thank you for the video!. Would you ever be able to do a video or series on your studio and the setup you use? Amps and pedals are one thing but I know nothing of the week Logic plugins or what it is, and how you guys use computers in your recordings. I am old school with guitar to pedal to amp. I would like to learn something of this if possible. Thanks 👍
That tone you got for On The Turning Away is something special. Signature David Gilmour. Crunchy, distorted, really cutting through the mix, but somehow very creamy and smooth. Nice.
@@gilmourishofficial Hi, I recently uploaded a video about the original 70s muff fuzz. May be of interest to you ua-cam.com/video/k-zmg6s0ZhI/v-deo.html
I had the original CE2 and I loved it. But sold it in the 90's. But when the Waza version came out, I bought it and use it with my acoustic and love it. But actually use the CE1 mode because it adds a nice bass, which is not like the original CE1, but I don't care. I would say that the CE2 mode doesn't have the same midrange as my original, but feels like more a flat response but sounds great. Even the vibrato mode is useful, so could be a great pedal for all Gilmour fans of that tone!
The CE-2 was my first modulation pedal and it's still my favourite, it was just so over used back then, i replaced mine with a phaser which I later regretted
I have a 1st gen CE 2 that will never leave my board. There's a slight mid-hump that adds such a subtle goodness to a lead tone. It helps cut through a mix.
I own an original silver screw CE-2 and it's an awesome pedal. It adds a little hump in the mids but in a very soft sounding way.. it's gorgeous. I don't know if they all do it but, mine acts as a booster to the signal in a significant way
I currently have been using the Boss CH-1 for years. Though I have been thinking of changing it out for a different chorus pedal. It is definitely used to get some of my favorite Gilmour tones. I remember in the mid 90s I used the Fender Ultimate Chorus amp, a solid state amp. I still believe after all these years of playing that chorus is an effect you either love or hate.
My favorite chorus is the MXR M134 Stereo Chorus. It has an incredibly lush sound, probably due to the 18V power supply. It has a EQ switch that preserves the low end, which makes it a great pedal for bass as well as guitar.
Nice playing, very rich and musical phrasing. I have a had a few chorus pedals, and to my ears this is probably the one I should have sought out! Warm and silky sounding, but that probably has a lot to do with your entire rig and playing, too.
I still have the CE-2 I bought shortly after I bought my copy of About Face. I still own a bunch of Boss pedals from that era though they are starting to show their age. But aren't we all.
"Turning Away" solo easily David's best and most emotional in the years after "Numb". It was a particular high point of the MLOR live shows and I think they actually were often more satisfying than the outro solo of "Numb".
Beautiful use of chorus. Like Pete's Hot Sauce...I put that schiff on everything. Had an Ibanez for years then picked up an MXR Black Label Chorus...more tweakable....similar tonality.
My usual go-to chorus is the TC Electronics Super Chorus Flanger (the vintage one, not the RI with SMCs) but there are cases where I prefer the Moog MF-108M ClusterFlux which, usually, is more likely used as a flanger. Another thing I like to use is the Rocktron Intellifex XL, but this is for a very special effect : one of the algos is made of 8 delay-chorus, up to 1000ms each... It's simply what Holdsworth was using for his delay-chorus "cloud", another funny thing to do: another algo is 4 delays with pitch-shifter... That's what Steve Vai sometimes used... The Intellifex-XL has an advantage over the regular Intellifex : you add a 4 bands parametric EQ... I don't have it in my "A" rig, it's with the Soldano SP-77 + Marshall 9001 preamps' flycase which also has a Roland GP-8, a Rockman Sustainor and the Octopus and it usually goes into a Marshall 9005 as a poweramp... Pretty old school but very efficient and way more polyvalent and versatile many may think. Not my go-to rig for Pink Floyd sounds, but really great too.
The Boss CE1 chorus is used on "Nothing Else Matters" with a clean amp and bright active humbuckers. It sounds glorious. Chorus got a bad reputation in the 80s when it was overused.
I have a CE-2 from around 1980, was always on my board. Replaced with the Waza as the CE-2 got valuable in the used market, so it stays home now. Also use the Waza Dim C. I am liking the Boss MD-500 now as it has way more setting controls and does both.
I'm not a Chorus guy at all - however, I recently added a Boss CE5 to my board. I couldn't find a Jam Pedals Waterfall locally. Ultimately I didn't want to make a big investment in a chorus pedal but had to get something passable for a few songs that I'm playing with my band. I found the CE5 at a modest price & it does the job
I absolutely love chorus i cant believe at some point it became dated, so useful it can do a pretty good job filling in for the electric mistress which is pretty chorusy to begin with. Might just be me im a fan of modulation
Love Chorus - have the CE2w, the WAZA Dimension and Tc Electronic SCF and blend with a Chorusy Flanger on one board. Boss Super Chorus on my piezo / acoustic signal path. Roland JC 22 arriving soon
Here's something some may not know - use chorus, plug in or pedal and just turn it on sometimes it will widen the sound, then if it doesn't just turn settings on barely on and keep creeping up. I don't like chorus but I like it when used this way when it just wobbles it ever so slightly.
Just brilliant!! Wonderful demonstration of the BOSS Chorus CE-2 pedal. I had a BODD Chorus pedal but this is the first time, I can see some info on settings. Very useful to beginner guitarists like me. A small request: Can you provide any guidance on how Mark Knopfler gets his tone on the Fender Strat? Thanks.
Thank you! I have very little knowledge on Knopfler’s gear but his classic late 70s and early 80s tone, I would imagine that’s just the Strat straight into a Fender amp, possibly with compression. Sounds like he’s using either the second or fourth pickup position as well.
I’ve got a really old CE2 and an old ProCo Rat ‘Woodcutter’ build, some say it has magical voodoo powers 😮 and with a Tape Op Delay I built from Stewmac, I have people always comment on that lead tone.
Nice! Just bought a CE-2 pcb from Madbean (called "Pork Barrel") for building my own CE-2 clone. Honestly I like the sound of the CE-1 more, but the CE-2 has its own flavour.
Great review and playing as always. Your website has been a gem for me for many years. I actually really love the sound of your recent backing tracks, are you using any plugins for the drums and the bass? P.s I recently made a comfortably numb cover, would love to know what you think, it's on my channel
I tried many chorus pedals lately and kept the Fender Hammertone Chorus. I tried it by chance after messing with some pedals up to 3 times the price. It's very versatile. I also bought the flanger from the same brand, it's capable of bothMXRish and EHXish sounds. The phaser (Waylon Jennings signature) sadly adds too much volume...
Thanks, that is the CHORUS sound with i grow up and its sticked in my dna. Your audio sounds very is immersive too with headphones unless CE wasn't originally been stereo. So how you did this stereo sound? And is this CE-2W less noisy than original and what is "better" of a new one? BTW i also love Totos 80's and Eddies 80's sounds with chorus+del etc.
Amazing jam. Thanks! Can I ask you how you set your recording level in Logic Pro? Your "recording line" is not so high, especially on the clean tones, but it sounds amazing.
Awesome stuff, Bjorn! And great playing as always. I have a question about the double chorus, Wall-era thing that has always peaked my curiosity… How would this have been set up? Would the choruses have been after everything in his signal chain and on his way out to his amplifiers and his rotating speakers? Or did each of these choruses feed into a separate Hiwatt, as I know he used 2-3 of them live? I just imagine all sorts of phasing issues that would exist with two choruses and I’m curious how the double CE-2 chorus rig would’ve been set up.
All I know from research is that they were placed between the pedalboard and amp. I really don’t know how. David did play in stere during that tour though but it looks like two mono signals, wich is kind of weird.
Yes. It's a Gallien-Krueger 250 ML MK II 100W. David had the speakers bypassed and used the amp as a preamp for the Boss HM-2. More on my site www.gilmourish.com/?page_id=22
Nice clip Bjorn, tnx! One remark though, Breathe is on Dark side of the moon where Gilmour use the Uni-Vibe a lot. Like on Breathe and Us and them, no chorus there. if you want my suggestions on settings there... regards and keep up the good work!
Thanks! As I said in the video - these are reference clips for how Breathe and Shine On WOULD have sounded with chorus. Breathe is UniVibe and Shine On is phaser. Cheers!
@@gilmourishofficial ok in that case would the ce 2 waza or the dimension c waza be better? and where in the chain should I put it? before or after delay/reverb?
Not as far as I know through my research. He used the MXR Phase 90 on Shine On You Crazy Diamond and Have a Cigar. That's pretty much it. Live, he used the Phase 90 on most of the songs they performed on the 74-75 tour.
IIRC, Dave was also using the Yamaha SPX90 as a stereo chorus in the 80's... He sometimes really exaggerated, gosh, on Kate Bush's "Sensual World", he was close to his worst tones ever if it wasn't for a live appearance with Kate where he used the square-body Steinberger: it was simply horrible... Well, Holdsworth could make the Stein sound great, Dave couldn't. For Breathe, I rather use the DLS VersaVibe which replaced the Fulltone MiniDejaVibe. The DLS sounds exactly the same but has more functions and two cherries on the cake: a jack for an EXP and... Was cheaper than the Fulltone so nonetheless, I upgraded my gear but there was money back, thanks to the re-sale of the former "vibe". For SOYCD, I far prefer using a Moog MF-103 phaser. I myself isn't a great fan of chorus, usually, if I want to thicken the sound, I tend to prefer using a very short stereo delay like 10 and 15ms, but it may depend on the place and the context, any way, all FX off and if I compare to old albums, my fingers sound fatter than Dave's and the gear choices make it for PF stuff but sound thicker than a Hiwatt/Fane system, it's more Mesa preamp, Marshall stereo amp and Electrovoice speakers. I also rerely need a compressor, it's really to be used where strong compression is needed.

Wait, what was the question? I clicked for the gear discussion but got mesmerized by the AMAZING tones and playing. Thanks, Bjorn. Thank you!
Thanks for your kind words!
What I really love about Gilmour’s tone is that he rarely drowns it with modulation, but rather uses it to enhance his tone a little bit with it.
Yes, modulation is a condiment, not the main course.
A lot of the mid to late 70s (Animals era) live bootlegs reveal Gilmour drowning the guitar in modulation.
Apart from The Wall live which is very heavily modulated
@@TWHueyGuitar The same for DSOTM and univibe live in 1972. Quite a heavy use.
I do love drowning shit out with modulation, though; especially chorus.
I bought the CE-2W after your recommendations and never looked back :) Great démo!
Thanks!
Same it’s a great chorus 🤙🏽🎸
This was my first pedal, which I bought in Denmark St. London when it was first released. It still sounds good today.
Easily the best DG resource on UA-cam! Thank you.
Thank you!
Great playing - and to my ears, everything just sounds better with chorus!!
Thanks!
Tasteful 😉👍👍
Chorus used to enhance without overpowering is a great effect😎👍👍
Thanks!
One of the best demos of this pedal I've ever seen. Subscribed.

Great playing and tones Bjorn! Love it!

i had old ce-2 unit for 25+ years and i learn now why i need them. just awesome man
Good god, this was so good! I needed this, and I might be asking you further in the future for some more info and tips. Thank you!

Came for the info, stayed for the jam. Great stuff.

CH-1 here, been using this chorus forever because I have always run a stereo rig...that's what Dave is doing right here

I dont get why people hate chorus so much just a little with a clean sound is awesome
I don’t like any modulation effects at all
Anyone who grew up with the overdone 80s chorus effect used in a lot of hair metal and pop isn’t it. That ruined it for a generation or 2.
So you just play acoustic guitar?
@rorschach1 no I play electric mostly

Electro Harmonix, yes.
@gilmourishofficial Correct.
A Boss ce2 on my board.
I use the Fender Power Chorus.
I don't want to play without chorus. Subtle chorus and subtle slapback echo is always on for me.
I often use a phase 90 for Gilmour stuff. I'd be interested in an A B Phase/Chorus comparison and the reasons for using phase rather than chorus.
The difference is how much motion/swirl you want to impart to the music. David Gilmour also used Leslie speaker cabinets for another layer of swirl.
I've got the Jam Waterfall but still looking out for a black label CE-2.
I’m using an mxr chorus
As I can only like it once, have some emoji’s. Incredible Bjorn.👏👏👏👌🎸

Your "recording line" is not so high, especially on the clean tones, but it sounds amazing.

Phase 90
For On the Turning Away - No. For Shine On - yes.
