The story of Prophet Uzair (عزير) is one of the interesting stories in Islamic history which contains deep lessons. the story of the Prophet Uzair, how he was put to sleep for 100 years, and why he is considered by some Jews to be the son of God.
The Prophet Uzair is mentioned in the Qur'an in Surah Al-Baqarah verse 259, which tells how Allah showed His power to Uzair by resurrecting him after being asleep for 100 years. This story takes place after the destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonians.
Allah says:
“Or have (you not noticed) people passing through a land whose (walls) have collapsed and covered the roofs. He said, 'How did Allah revive this land after it was destroyed?' So Allah put it to death for a hundred years, then revived it. Allah asked, 'How long did you stay (here)?' He said, 'I stayed (here) a day or part of a day.' Allah said, 'No! You have stayed for a hundred years. Look at your food and drink which have not been eaten. changed; and look at your donkey (which has become bones). We will make you a sign for mankind. And look at the bones, how We put them together and clothe them with flesh.' Then when it became clear (to you) Uzair) how Allah gives life to the dead, he said, 'I know that Allah has power over all things.'” (Surat Al-Baqarah: 259)
Some Jews at that time glorified Uzair because of his services in reviving the teachings of the Torah. After the destruction Baitul Maqdis, many teachings of the Torah were lost. Prophet Uzair is believed by some Jews as a person who was given the ability by Allah to memorize and rewrite the Torah.
However, some Jewish groups later considered Uzair to be the "son of God," a belief that is erroneous and condemned in Islam. This is confirmed in the Qur'an:
"And the Jews said, 'Uzair is the son of Allah,' and the Christians said, 'The Messiah is the son of Allah.' That is what they said with their mouths, (they) imitated the words of the former disbelievers . Allah curses them; how did they turn away?”
(Surah At-Taubah: 30)
