  • After a 300 mile crossing, we arrive in Weipa and take the opportunity to restock our provisions. We run through our recipe for home made bacon, put on a brew and do a little woodwork. As a bonus, you can learn:
13:00 how to coil a hose like a pearl diver; and
26:48 tie the world’s best cargo hitch.
We are very grateful to our friends Emma and Leroy who made us welcome in their home and took us into their family.

Another excellent video. Just a few epoxy notes:
    - Don't get it on your skin. Exposure can lead to sensitisation, meaning you can get horrible rashes and other reactions from even slight exposure down the track. This could even preclude you from being in the cabin of an epoxy boat. Since no batch of epoxy is perfectly stoichiometric, there are always some unreacted molecules around.
    - It is not UV stable. Your oars need a coat of paint or varnish to protect them from the sun.
    - Bote Cote ratios are 2:1 by volume, but 100:44 by weight. It's a great product.

Yeah - a guy I know building a 60foot cat got so sensitised (West System epoxy) he had to wear head to toe protective suit with pressurised air just to do the smallest of epoxy jobs. He'd walk into the shed and he'd flare up and had more than a few visits to the hospital (I think they used antihistamine injections). Not nice - not one bit nice.
Having said that - not all epoxies are the same and he may have reacted differently to a different brand. But who knows.

Talking about bird poo! An old whaler out of New Bedford, Maine after a 2 year whaling voyage happened on an old acquaintance. His friend took a look at him and saw he had a wooden leg, a hook for a hand and a patch over his left eye. He commented that he must have had a terrible time. The old whaler commented...yeah...I got my leg caught up in a coil of rope and when we harpooned a whale it took my leg off and the ships carpenter fashioned this peg for my missing leg. We were cutting blubber off of a whale and a flensing blade sliced my hand off and they fashioned this hook as a replacement. But what happened to you eye asked his friend. Well, I was looking up in the rigging and an albatross took a poop in my eye. His friend said...surely that wouldn't have caused you to loose an eye. The old whaler replied...well no..but I forgot I had the hook!

I must say - "Boat life does a body really great!" You guy/girl are looking more trim and fit than ever. The sailor and his sailorette beauty. Boat life suits you both. I had a 30' Columbia that had been sailed through the Panama Canal twice before I got it. I lived in the Glorietta Bay under the Coronado Bridge in San Diego for just over a year before duty to the Navy called me away from that lifestyle that I traded in for a life of children. Watching you all has really made me think about selling everything and going back to the sea before I get too old. Thanks for your movies. You are both truly wonderful people.

My old long time ago departed Father told me decades ago, "A day without learning something new is a wasted day, son." I'm 65, nearly 66 in June, and I did learn something I did not know today. Thank you, both of you, oh so dear young couple, I will go to bed happy and more educated tonight. Thank you from the bottom of my old hearth. If I could only win the Lotto, I would join you on your journey, only asking to sleep in your genious dinghy, no more. But I've been not so lucky so far. Oh for Fox sake - I'm going to complain to UA-cam - This is just unfair to other channels - (Riley and Elay take note ,and its not that you do it at all badly!) I mean, it's OK to have joy and it's OK to have science-knowledge and real experience, but seriously, I'm just embarrassed to admit how much I've gained from 32 minutes of video :-)))))).
So well done and not at all sure from whom I've learnt the most.

In NZ my mother used to have a ginger beer "plant" which required "feeding" daily, then mixed/bottled and left to brew for a week or so. In summer, all good but winter required warmer temps so the bottles were put into our "hot water cupboard", an indoor cupboard built for the hot water cylinder, used to air/dry the laundry in winter. Those bottles can explode!!!! And they did one time at 4am, all over the week's load of clean dry laundry of a family of 5. Glass shards galore, cleanup took hours. 🥴

Excellent as usual!!! When I was a kid (3rd and 4th forum, early ‘70s) my family moved to Australia. We lived in Bathurst and Oak Flats (near Wollongong). When in Oak Flats I got a summer job at a pallet factory stacking pallets on the delivery trucks (for .75 cents an hour). One of the truck drivers taught me how to do the “truckies knot”. I still use it often. Here in Oregon USA I have never seen anyone else use this knot, it seems to be largely unknown around here. I like the bowline trick, I’ll try it. Thanks for the trip down memory lane...

Lots of info and fun in this one. When the birds discover your boat they are hard to get rid of. As well as the mess the like to peck at your wind gear. The cockys are the worst. Lots of provisioning hints and advice. We eat so healthy on the boat due to the lack of health food. 😂😂

Great tip about th cardboard boxes, I learnt that the very first time I saved in the BVI, Left th box in th dingy and transferred the food to the boat. Did not even bring th box aboard in the cockpit. We then drenched the box in the water until we brought it back to shore. Very good tip to mention,

Again excellent. Nice to see an absence of nitrate in the bacon. I have convinced my family that that grey bacon tastes just as good as as pink bacon - and doesn't give you bowel cancer... Oh and I like the rind on mine, hairy nipple and all.
We tend to use figure of eight knots for the purchase on truckers hitches. We use them for dingy forestays here as well as for load carrying.
Note that epoxy is not UV stable. It needs something to stop it breaking down. A coat of polyurethane will do it.

I do also like Alpine butterfly knots as they can be loaded in 3 directions. That's the professional ropey in me though. Figure 8 does very well.

I raised two boys the youngest of which is 24 and has a double bachelors degree in computer science working for HP while the older graduates with a PhD in Chemistry from The Scripps Research Institute this May. He has been accepted by Princeton University for a 2 1/2 year Post Doc research program. Neither ever attended a single day in public school. We felt we could do a better job because we could make learning fun and interesting. I really feel like your channel is entertaining while it educates and that is always a winning recipe.

I watch most of the popular sailing videos on you tube and i feel that yours are by far the best.
They are Informative, knowledgeable with a relaxed style, most enjoyable for a shore bound sailor.
One thing missing is a subtitle button for people like me that are hard of hearing, please add the button as it would make it so much more enjoyable.
    Keep them coming.

Wrap veg in newspaper and they keep quite s bit longer. Makes for a good micro- climate and any that go a bit juicy don't contaminate the rest.

I came across your channel a couple of weeks ago and just binged on everything you've posted so far. They're amazing; Troy, you're like a modern day Malcolm Douglas and Pascale is just a beautiful jewel on the high seas and I love her history and cooking segments. I wish I was still in Townsville so if and when you passed by I could take you out to dinner or provide you some accommodation. However, I'm now in Sydney but the offer is still extant if you come down this far. I can't wait for the next episode. In all the sailing channels I subscribe to, you guys, without a doubt, catch the most fish lol.

Once again the editing is top notch! I'm sure it's not a big deal to a lot of people but editing is very hard to do. Also the "flow rate" and the way you capture surroundings just enough to make you feel like your there is almost perfect. Pascal and you always put a smile on me every time. Loved the live stream the other day as I was lucky to be on when you were podcasting. I do hope you get a little bigger boat soon though the one have is very romantic as it is. Cheers

Playing spot the ropey again. Betcha adapted that bowline from rope access and climbing. I know I did. I've been throwing biners in to the wear locations on truckies hitches when I want to haul instead of load tie down. If you throw a pulley in there as well you lose even more friction. You can also use the loop of the bowline for more mechanical advantage. such an adaptable knot eh.
