As a former Microbiologist in a pediatric burn hospital we tested many disinfectants. When using vinegar for mold it is recommended to put it in a spray bottle (app. 950 ml) with a teaspoon of baking soda. Spray the surface and let it sit for 60 minutes. This solution is effective against 82% of mold species, so if it reappears shortly afterwards maybe try some tea tree oil which is both antimicrobial and antifungal! Wonderful video, Thank you!
Now we know more about DIY outboard repair and a bit of Thursday Island than we did before viewing this. Thank you Troy, Thank you Pascale. That's what we love about FRS. Always an education.
Hey You Two. Just stumbled across your site this week. Now been binge watching. My wife and I are doing two per day at dinner time. This is one of the best on You Tube. The WA Government is bellyaching about falling tourist numbers. All they need to do is buy your videos and show them overseas. We will be inundated. You are naturals. Love your easy and obviously close relationship.
A true gift is making a topic interesting especially after learning it. Another gift is having a person interested enough to learn it. Troy, you are blessed that Pascale is your biggest fan and adds a good amount of intense interest in capturing those moments of knowledge you share with us. The editing is superb and I am unqualified to point a finger as to whose responsibility it is, but I presume it is both of you involved. It does make it a bit difficult for me to add anything of interest (first comment here), but if a token of support is allowed, so be it, even if it isn't necessary. You two are a lot of fun!
Troy, I noticed that your inline fuel filter is aligned horizontally. I've found that water can collect in the lower portion where biologics can grow and eventually flow downstream to block the carburetor jets. A vertical orientation, if you have room, solves the problem.
I'm completely bummed out now! I've just finished all the videos and there are no more! Wonderful job on them all. Oh, Pascal is just a doll, she's a real keeper! I've never donated to a channel before so I guess I've got to figure out how it's done. If anyone deserves a bit of a financial hand it's you guys. Keep up the good work and I'll be watching!
Thank you! Paying attention to the little things.....the plant, the toad... thanks for showing they're a big part of our lives if one just stops to notice😊😊😊
Your knowledge of everything is awesome. If you guys had a 3 hour long video I'd still be wishng it was longer. Love your videos, can't wait till the next one...
There's great history, art and words on cemetery head stones ! Have you ever done rubbings of them ? Troy & Pascale keep up the great work on tech & life on a live-a-board ! For the mold problem, try some Lysol toilet bowl cleaner ( the thick purple stuff ), either mixed with water in a spray bottle or straight from the bottle. Apply it, and wait a few min's and It kills everything including pink or red mold, which is very bad for your lungs. Just be careful it's really, really strong !! Cheers !
Thanks Troy and Pascale for another video. Your mix of the history of your country, navigation/coastal sailing and the general " how to " videos gives your channel a really nice balance .👍
fact you give shout outs to the local love an God know I need help with my odds n ends like the outboard , never stop sharing the love it WILL be contagious! 🌬️💨⛵🤙🏼 An for that moLOLd😷 your lungs and health is precious! I hope you both killed the mold at Bay for a bit be blessed you 2
Ahhh you guys are great! I thought the music you choose Pascal, for the graveyard scene was appropriate and peaceful. Again clear & concise tips on cleaning the carburettor jets on an outboard. I have a Yammy 2t and tips will someday come in handy. I've been watching you guys through the long dark winter here in Finland and now i get to watch you in the long days and warm windy sunny days - perfect for sailing. See you soon G
Here in the Carolina's, US it's so humid all the time ! We use an additive when we top the fuel tanks like Stabil to deal with water & gunk. Also if it's really bad we might throw in some denatured alcohol like Paul said, it will mix with the water in the fuel and burn . Also if your still thinking about a world tour, you might think about getting your ham radio license. The theory is easy and no morse code anymore ! There are lots of marine networks and stations all over the globe. Unless there's a really severe geomagnetic storm, there is always someone out there in case you have problems !! Everything from the sea to space stations can be contacted, via voice or data and APRS ! Ten year olds have passed the exams !!
I just endured a 3 minute "Kathmandu" ad so I could watch Troy diddle with his engine. Spend your AdSense wisely ;-) (I'm now planning a trip to Everest Base Camp)
My favourite tool for washing out the boat (we get a lot of black mildew) is a hand pressurised garden sprayer. I often use that to spray soogee or diluted bleach around and then scrub with a soft handbrush. Over here i prefer dilute 'thin' bleach as a cleaning agent once i have done it with detergent. We don't have the heat problem like you do but very wet winters and boats can get pretty nasty. I spent 2 days just cleaning my new (old) wooden boat but that was a difficult job with all the frames little spaces that don't get much air.
I love your videos. I also love how you and Pasquale (sp?) work so well as a team. Her gentle "get in there!" reminded me SOOOO much of my own darling Denise! :-). Your how to sequences are jewels of video making.
Another Great video..👍⛵️👍. It wasn't too long ago, when I first subscribed, you had less than 3000 subscribers now 28,000, no one deserves it more. 🧜♂️ “Education is what people do to you, Learning is what you do to yourself…..”
hey Troy & Pascale , here on the coast of BC ,,, I live right by the river and have swam with the salmon ,, very cool ,, and have also fished them in the river , if you guys come to BC ill take you sailing for sure , and show you the river ,, just let me know when your comin ,,,
Pascal and Troy, legends...your carbie editorial spot on. About to tune up my Evinrude after years of sitting...you two exude the perfect mix of priority and play. Thank you for always being Free Range Real.
A great big THANK YOU for this! I’m buying a small 16’ sailboat that comes with a 2hp Suzuki outboard engine. The mechanical tips shown here will be very handy for when I need to do maintenance in the future. Cheers from Montreal, Canada!
Best sailing couple anywhere, all the time, love you two,,,,,,,,,,,,,,/),,,,,,,,,,,,sail on, fair winds. Learned more from you about carburetors in this video than in a whole year of shop class. Awesome. You absolutely should have been a teacher if you weren’t, many students missed out.
I read Castaways in the early eighties, it was probably the inspiration for my family and me to emigrate in 1988, Lucy and Gerald were on Tuin which is not too far from Badu Island, I’ve always been a bit obsessed with being marooned on an island ! Although we have lived in Darwin mostly since ,I’ve never made it over to the straights, but will definitely be spending a long time there after sailing back from the Uk in 2019. You guys look like you are having the time of your lives ! But can we have more fishing please ! Love Dan
3hp - surely one of Yamaha's best ever engines - so much better than the 2 and 4hp. had one for years - drowned it a couple of times - but never managed to kill it - always started very easily and no sign of corrosion after many years use
About the mould. I don't know if this will work on a boat, but it works great on land. Tea Tree oil actually kills mould spores, so unlike vinegar which loosens it from surfaces, it kills the next generation of what ever has been left behind. After an initial clean I, regular use oil difusers (a few of those t-light candle types) in high mould areas and it's worked great when used on a weekly basis. No more scrubbing walls. Only caveat, in your situation it would have to be during calm seas obviously, and on days that you don't have to be stuck in the cabin etc (the smell while pleasant when weak, does get to you after a while) but clears out pretty quick. You can get the same kill spores effect if diluted in water and used in place of vinegar, but scrubbing gets so fragging boring after a while...lol Dunno if it will work on a boat as I said, but thought it might be worth mentioning.
Another really cool episode. I like your original people recognition. An experiment? Try salt water on the mould to see what happens. Wood decks need to flushed with salt water regularly to kill algae so maybe salt water will work on mould too.
Excellent explanation for how to service the carburetor. You make it easy to understand the function of a little carburetor. The pearl diver cemetery is a sacred place. The history of the guns was most interesting. The vinegar and clove oil should rid your boat of mold. Looking forward to your next videos.
I love the DIY videos. You must have been a mechanic at some point in your life because you are very knowledgeable on so many things, even the reels that you fish with. That was some very interesting history as well. I really enjoyed this video, and thanks so much for sharing. My oldest son left a week ago today from our town, Biloxi Mississippi, and headed towards Clearwater Florida. I spoke with him on the phone right before watching this video and he is 2 hours from his destination. He has been two days without cell service because of being so far out in the Gulf, and over the last 48 hours since I've talked with him prior to earlier, he had to service the water pump, and now the batteries are shot as well. I'm glad he is only a short distance away now. He will be able to take care of any issues once he gets there. Just wanted to share that with y'all.
Excellent video you two! Please keep up with your natural gift of making videos and having them always filled with interesting facts and topics!! Until next time fair winds
Great video guys, right on the money with the cleaning carburetor on the little Yamaha. Principals are same for most carbureted engines. Thanks for great history, I had to look up the island and read about it, very interesting. thanks again for all your videos! Safe sailing!
Not that you need it but Sailing Ruby Rose just did a outboard maintenance episode. Both yours and theirs we're very helpful to this novice sailor. Thank you!

Thank you for the information, i love the patience you exhibit when you are explaining your mechanical issues I always get sea sick so I will never end up doing what the both of you are doing, living life on the sea. I live vicariously through your adventures thanks for allowing us a glimpse into your lives. You both are very good stewards of the land and Ocean.
"So do you think the carburettor is blocked again?" :) Curious to know how often that's happened in humid/wet weather? Do people ever install taps on the bottom of the fuel bowl and tank to drain any water so they don't have to pull it completely apart unless necessary? That way you can check for water in the fuel like a pilot would for a pre-flight check. The longer fuel and water are in contact, the more microbes will multiply and make sludge and particle aggregates out debris large enough to block jets.
I cleaned the carb of my parsun 5hp outboarder (it didn´t work after cleaning) and I wonder to find the little black rubber plug in the Cockpit. Now I know where to put it back ;-)) Meanwhile the plug is back on place and the motor works fine again. Thanks for this great Video.
totally loving these vids guys and I know absolutely nothing about fixing engine but love tinkering and trying to fix probs could you use fishing ling to clear those small brass holes? gotta love how do mould spores come back again pop
Hi Pascale and Troy, hope you are both well. When I was up that end of the world,I looked at going to Thursday Island, but I didn't go because I thought it was a bit costly. Now I know I should have gone anyway,oh well😔 Have you bought a can of brake clean yet Troy, not nagging or anything, hahaha, good for carby cleaning too😊
I've never owned a 2-cycle outboard engine but if someday I do, this video will help when this problem pops up. I like the idea of carrying just diesel fuel so a diesel outboard seems a practical way to go, discounting cost. I also really like the idea of an electric AC outboard powered with lithium batteries....but again bunches and gobs of money. Another good one......
Some years ago we anchored in English harbour, Antigua. A nice new swedish boat arrived, anchored beside us, he putted an electric outborder to his dingi. He had solar panels and a wind generator on an arch. The next days it was cloudy with some raining but no wind. On the third day he started to row his dingi. Here he had to row just 150 meters to the dingidock, but think on anchorages where you anchor not so proteced as in English Harbour.
True....if one goes the electric route, one must have enough amp/hr reserve battery storage.....and a diesel generator for those times when electrons peter out.
Awesome guys! Down to earth and real, great explanation on the carb. Funny timing..I’m just about to do our 4 hp. We Always enjoy your videos. SV Dijan.
Hello, You should look into K100, it breaks down water in fuel and could probably be a great alternative and a life saver on water. Btw: it’s always a pleasure to watch your video very relaxing.
It's been so long since I played with a carb that I am glad you refreshed my memory..... I never knew Pascal to be such a slave driver (Get in there!!!) : ) Mold just plain sucks. Having someone paint over it REALLY sucks.
Great to see you kids! And there you go teaching us again! That looked like a great little cafe. Did you know that in Hawaiian Makai means towards the water? Vs, Mauka = towards the mountains. Its a great way to give directions on islands that are big enough ;-)
Thanks Gang, loved this video as usual. The plight of the Japanese diver in the day was bleak. It is amazing to understand the life expectancy of these young men and the hardships they endured. Regarding the mold, are you adding baking soda to the vinegar? I am curious what works better, straight vinegar or a mix. I use the mix on just about everything. Best wishes, Jono
First of all WOW just WOW!! i found your channel 4 or 5 days ago just randomly and have since binged it from the start and figured i would wait till the current ep to comment. You 2 have made such an amazing channel now i have caught up i know im gonna be iching for the new ep each week.. Well done on living such an amazing life style and sharing this amazing journey with as all !!! p.s you might not want to say and i might not want to know but are you going all the way around ? :)

When dissambling anything, take photos before, during each step, is a huge help.
You guys are my kind of sailing cruisers. Down to Earth, practical, simple and relaxed. I love your adventures, videos, and instructional segments.
DITTO, Bill Roberts. Love Pascale's comment ... "every nook and cranny !! " Essential to keep the stuff at bay !! 😊👍👌👊⛵️⚓️
Mould yuck Bit sexist at the end btw Troy
iv'e been a mechanic for 40 years, excellent tutorial on carburetors! bravo my friend!
That was the best explanation of how a carburetor works, thanks mate's. May your sails be filled with wind.
Such good information, so entertaining, and honest. It is fun seeing such a happy couple.

You’re a natural at explaining mechanical systems. I always learn something (or a lot of things) from your techie videos, thanks for your efforts.
just watching through your videos, just wanted to say they are great and hello from Texas. we love you guys! please keep em coming.
Thank you! Paying attention to the little things.....the plant, the toad... thanks for showing they're a big part of our lives if one just stops to notice😊😊😊

Great advice once again.
Regarding cleaning the idle jet etc a very fine guitar string would possibly slide through and claean any gunge.

"Get in there. You LOVE it. Dark Moldy spaces" XD
great advice again... especially for those unfamiliar with carbies.
Another really cool episode. I like your original people recognition. An experiment? Try salt water on the mould to see what happens. Wood decks need to flushed with salt water regularly to kill algae so maybe salt water will work on mould too.
Amazing history lesson, I had never heard of the Japanese influence that early in the region.

Thanks for great history, I had to look up the island and read about it, very interesting. thanks again for all your videos! Safe sailing!
Not that you need it but Sailing Ruby Rose just did a outboard maintenance episode. Both yours and theirs we're very helpful to this novice sailor. Thank you!
those single piston 2 stroke motors are so basic and simple, the modern motor mower is more complex.
i always liked working on my 3.4 evinrude, back to basics kind of stuff.
i reckon dealing with the mold in the tropics would drive me nuts.
nice video you 2 , keep up the good work.

Attention to detail.... nice 👍🏻
Thanks for the great explanations!
Thanks again for a top vid Pascal and Troy
Hi. Genius explanation. Fantastic editing. Alaways looking forward to new videos!.
Brilliant again. Thanks!
Nice trick with the inline filter. I do that on my hot rods.
Thank you professor...!
good show guys and good luck with the war on mould. as allways thanks for sharing
totally loving these vids guys and I know absolutely nothing about fixing engine but love tinkering and trying to fix probs could you use fishing ling to clear those small brass holes? gotta love how do mould spores come back again pop
You can use anything softer than brass that won't break of in there.
All good and useful info here. Many thanks for providing it.
Hi Pascale and Troy, hope you are both well. When I was up that end of the world,I looked at going to Thursday Island, but I didn't go because I thought it was a bit costly. Now I know I should have gone anyway,oh well😔

Awesome guys! Down to earth and real, great explanation on the carb. Funny timing..I’m just about to do our 4 hp. We Always enjoy your videos. SV Dijan.
smaller particles than the mesh will of course go right and build up until the carb is well and truly knakerd..

Regarding the mold, are you adding baking soda to the vinegar? I am curious what works better, straight vinegar or a mix. I use the mix on just about everything. Best wishes, Jono
