      mothers house in two years and then remodeling the whole house have been watching your videos like text books and plan to spend the next year learning how to build correctly. my only question i have i guess is two things. I know i cant do everything and luckily my uncle is an inspector so he can check on things for me when i hire contractors to do work but im Know and am afraid there may be times where he is busy and i will have to maybe look myself and make sure things are being done correctly i guess is a way to put it with out being rude. its just i hear so many horror stories about little things that got over looked and then growing into larger problems later down the road. so my question im asking i guess is how does one go about screening a contractor and second what are some major things to look for i know i cant scan every inch like a murder scene but if the are certain projects and arears that i should focus on making sure it done to the t i would love to know. if you could do a video on this for new home renovators this would be so helpful

    • @Ano0onymouse

    • @wildcat8598

      That’s interior drywall because we can afford to put insulation between our exterior and interior walls. Majority of homes in the US are brick or stone on the outside. In the past 20 years been a lot of vinyl siding but for the 100+ years before that it was brick, stone or logs

    • @GtsAntoni1
      @GtsAntoni1 2 роки тому +10

      The purpose of drywall is many fold; it adds an air barrier, is easy to repair, and makes it possible to quickly add fixtures.
      In the UK houses are double skinned brick, with insulation, and then drywall / plasterboard is applied to the interior.
      It looks nicer, and not having it is cheap. I don't understand why you *wouldn't* have it.

    • @xGHCxVader

    In all seriousness: the stud finders kinda fail when you need to find the studs behind 1” of lathe and plaster. There are also no screws to find with a magnet. And in a really old house, the studs aren’t 16” OC. So I had to resort to a gentle version of the 3rd method: a series of 3/16” holes drilled with a masonry bit, about every 1” until I hit solid wood, and then explored that area more closely. I was hanging cabinets and had to make sure I’m gonna go exactly into the solid wood and not even the edge of it. And the studs were spaced anywhere from 14 to 17” OC. Lots of small holes that I drilled that day but it was easy to fill it all up later.

    My favorite way is to use a strong magnet. A rare earth magnet works best but any small one will do. Run it along the wall and it will lock on to the drywall screws. Drag the magnet straight up and down to add additional points if you need a line from top to bottom. Works with metal or wooden studs if your magnet is decent.

    Ok serious tip for those having a tough time or have old walls.
    Grab thread, the thinner the better, stick a rare earth magnet (neodymium) on the end, slowly drag it across the wall. It'll flicker when it comes across metal nails. Careful for water and gas pipes but this method is literally the only one that works for me other than smashing holes. Good luck 👍

    I tap on the wall and then use a thin Phillips screwdriver to poke holes in about 1" spacing to find/verify the stud location. It also helps to study the construction techniques so you will know generally where some stud support will always be such as edges of windows and doors, top and bottom of walls, along side of electrical outlets and not to forget that many studs are spaced 16" apart. I have also used a magnet to find the screws or nails in the drywall. Happy hunting.

    Really strong magnet works pretty well and no calibration needed

    The baby gate plastic covered magnets work well. Just slide them on the wall and they'll find the nail or screw heads.

    I use a really strong magnet. I learned this on accident. I bought some magnets for my fridge. They were really strong. Much stronger than I expected. As I was unpacking them I broke one near the stove as I was testing. It slammed down hard. So I said… “I wonder… “, and stuck 3 together. They slammed right to the wall where I saw a screw bump. I began to use the, to hold things on the walls. Came in handy when hanging shelves.
