The sad thing that's overlooked in the story is that it took the wife or mother 30 years to get over the loss enough to sell the car .

Another country song, one by Willie Nelson explains you DON'T get over it, you just get through it. The loss is never healed, the scars remain till the day you exit this world. "It's not something you get over, but it's something you get through". I THINK Willie wrote that about the death of one of his sons. It takes a poet, someone like Willie to put into words that which we all feel. And when it's done we recognise and pay tribute.

i feel ya, i cant sit through Blackhawk Down, i knew every one of those Aviators that died in Mog. its been since 1993. the solace is that like them, Andrew was a Patriot. i dont even know him and im proud of him. i wish he was still here with you in person, but his spirit lives in you just as the spirits of all of our fallen heroes live on in us. Honor him as i do , wear Red on Friday, support his "current" buddies, and understand that every one of us who is still here strives to live to the fullest for those who have left us to dwell in the Elysian Fields among the larger than life heroes that welcomed them as brothers. sending you a hug as i pour a wee dram to toast the memory of your brother who is now mine as well. @@johnlake4809 actually, I feel bad when people thank me for my service. All I did was kill people that I was told to kill, and for reasons that were beyond me and I feel were unjust, now. I didn't know better at that time. I did what I had to do, and that was that. That's one think people even in the government don't understand. The military's real job is to kill people and break things. If you're not going to let them do that, don't send them. Fact is, we could have avoided that whole war by giving Ho Chi Minn help bringing his country into the 20th century when he begged all the western nations for help. But no, instead we waste thousands of lives and billions of dollars on a war that need not be... then to make matters worse, after all that, we just give up. Frankly if we'd fought ww2 like nam, we'd all be speaking Japanese or German. Congress got into the act and put rules on the services that were stupid and made it impossible to win. then Nixon gives China, our enemy, most favored nation trade status and lets them take over our marketplaces. That and taking us off the gold standard ruined the economy of this country forever.

When my mom was young she went underage drinking with a friend. and the next morning she found out he died from a car crash drinking and driving.
Fast forward like 7to9 years and my dad got in a car crash and rolled his car and a fire started but someone pulled him out and saved him.
My dad went crazy and searched every pool hall, bar, and motels searching for this person who saved his life but never found them.
A year later my moms going though photos with my dad and he sees a picture and immediately stops my mom and says that’s the guy who saved from that car remember and my mom said are you sure my dad said yes and my mom goes it can’t be and my dad said it has to be I remember him perfectly and my mom says but he died years ago when I was young in a car crash after we were underage drinking (kid from start of story who died)

The history about this song is the song writer based a lot of this on real life. The writer had a friend that did 2 tours in Vietnam and he was killed about 2 weeks later driving a car just like this. The writer wanted to write a song telling about the ones that returned but died shortly after returning and also for those that didn't return but left a story. The writer went to the Memorial for those lost in Vietnam to make sure that there wasn't really a real life Andrew Malone but they did take the 2 names off the wall to create the name. What i love about this song is that it show a bond if you will about 2 soldiers from 2 different times where 1 didn't come back and 1 did bonding over the car. The spirit of Private Malone was with him to the end
