There were lots of people who doubt that, BEFORE she even got started. Understanding all circumstances about Laura Dekker's story it is very disappointing to see how much people gossip viciously about her plans at the beginning of her voyage.without knowing anything about her and of her skills. At the age of 14 she'd already scaled her heights of her sailing skills. She was more experienced at that time of her life than others of her age or even older. Nowadays you won't find anyone who is telling any bad word about her. Nobody has ever doubted that she is a brave and courageous one of her kind.... It is like the reunification of Germany: Noone ever was a communist and nobody was a Stasi-officer. Just to make up your mind for the whole truth!

+Peter from Germany I'm thinking of another young sailor, Abby Sunderland, who had to be rescued from the middle of the Indian Ocean. She got much negative publicity after that. People seems to forget that she made it more than halfway around the World, including rounding of Cape Horn. She had difficult situations before but giving up wasn't an option. She just had to when the mast broked. The same things happen to older people too, but nobody asks about their skills.

That's true. Especially your opinion about people who are older but not famous and not able to let the world know about their sailing skills and lifetime experiences. There is one thing which has to be added: Laura Dekker is hard to compare with Abby Sunderland or Jessica Watson. This two young ladies had all the support a novice sailor could dream of. Laura Dekkers preparation period differs from those of the other competitors we're talking about. Laura Dekker had a bit of help of some fans. The only sponsoring I know is the warf where her boat was berthed at the start and she could take profit out of the practical help of her father's well raised skills in boat issues. He cared very well of the technical parts of Lauras "GUPPY". But Jessica Watson and Abby Sunderland both had a crew standing behind them and caring for every little wish to be considered. Laura Dekker didn't have that full service. She took what she could get and what her father was able to offer. Laura's wishes needed to be moderate-sized.

+Peter from Germany Yes, and Laura had also a different goal than the others. The record wasn't so important to her, she wanted to see the World and she would have done that journey even without a chance to take it. And she never wanted to be a celebrity either. She's just a "girl next door" person. I still admire Jessica and Abby too, It wasn't exactly a sunday-trip they went for. Laura had some small sponsors. Volvo gave the diesel engine and I think there was some sponsored electronics too. I don't remember exactly, it's a while since i read her book.

You need to give your parents a slap in the face.
I travelled west Africa at 15/16 then cross Gibraltar by yacht to Spain and walked to Portugal to meet the family, this took me about 2 months. (I was in no rush)
I know not everyone has money to travel, but there are many books that can teach you how to save. And knowing how to read and speak english pretty much guarantees safe and competent travel.

in the last decade there have been a rash of these, but none like Laura. the rest had sponsors, and many were doing solo non stop trips. Laura did this on her own, with only the help of her parents, and not very much money. it should be mentioned, her father is a boatbuilder, so most of this was sweat equity. she chose to do it with stops, because she wanted to actually see some of the world she lives in, not to just do some stunt for attention. respect to her for her singular accomplishment, and it is my wish that more people had the kind of adventurous can-do spirit that she does!

A childhood spent sailing the seven seas teaches children that their are no real boundaries. I know, as I was fortunate to spend my entire youth on a boat. Later, as an adult, my husband and I, on a shoestring budget, spent 18 incredible years sailing to a multitude of tiny, almost unknown islands in the Pacific. To set off into a place of constant uncertainty can be one of the greatest freedoms we ever achieve.

I have a ton of respect for her and her parents. I am 36 and while raised on water, my life has been dictated by a life of compromises that regardless of what other people wanted, never drowned my desire to be back on the water. We have two 16 year olds and this really makes me reflect on myself that her parents raised a young woman with the skill and confidence to set out on such an adventure herself. She may seem *rich* because most people are caught up in living lives we are told are the 'grown up' way to do things, which leaves little wiggle room for sailing when you are trying to keep up with the Jones. We work to survive, she's surviving to live her dream. How anyone can not be happy for that is beyond comprehension.

What is wrong with you people. Who cares whether her parents have money or not. Clearly to sail around the world is a huge accomplishment and should be congratulated not scorned. All the money in the world will not help you in a squall or storm in the middle of the pacific or any other ocean so good for you Laura. You have accomplished what most people only dream about.

She is a women who does not go with the flow but with her personal flow and that is what life is all about it! Not everybody wants a house, a husband, money, car and then die as she says. I did however notice what a beautiful boat she was sailing, but doing something like that takes a lot of passion and drive and something I dont think growing up with money (if she even has any) will instill in someone. Everyone seeks a different path in life and hers is truly beautiful and the fact that she is living her life is true beauty. We should all be the best people we can be and thrive together! If everybody stays at home there won't be any. Where do you put the limit? Millions of dollars are wasted in other ways too and money circulate. If you were thinking of the other sailing girl, Abby Sunderland (her parents weren't rich either), who had to be rescued from the middle of the Indian Ocean. It was expensive, but also a good test of the rescue capability in real life.

I showed 'Maidentrip' to my Grade 6 (12 years old) students in Thailand, because they tend to be quite infantile, to show them what is possible if they just try. The girls reacted especially well and it bought up the issues that they don't need men (if you've ever lived in Asia you'll get what I mean)...this young lady changed and inspired many of my students to rethink their perceptions. She's a wonderful role model for kids around the world.

I'm a 16 year old guy. I've taken an interest in learning about sailing and that's what lead me here. This girl will probably never see this, but I want to commend her for her incredible bravery. I would never have the courage to do something like this alone. I wish you all the best in life, and, no matter how weird this sounds, I am very proud of you and what you've accomplished.

They aren't absolutely poor, nor are they filthy rich. The boat was bought in awful condition and her dad with a bit of her help and some, were able to finish the boat after months of repair.
She also had to fight her governent (for a year-she wanted to do this when she was 13) for her right to do this. The govt also tried to take her away from her parents, due to them allowing this crazy idea. So she had to deal with that too. I think, it's absolutely amazing for a girl like her to make use of the resources she has to the fullest.

You can admire her accomplishment as a sailor, yet note her immaturity in criticizing people who work to support their families (starting at 3:08). I would love to sail off into the sunset, but honor and duty prevent deserting my familiy. She is supported by her family to do this, and self righteously criticizes us for supporting our families. She needed a better editor.

***** Thank you for interpreting what she meant. She was self-righteous in criticizing people who have responsibilities. Nearly all of us who work to support our families also enjoy the amazing things in the world. To accuse us of just chasing money was ignorant and should have been edited out. Since it was not, she really wanted to criticize.

A lot of jealousy going around. Yes, it takes money to sail, it doesn't mean this is not an accomplishment. It takes money to become a race car driver or a tennis pro. A lot more money than it takes to sail. People should stop passing judgement on others.
Way to go Laura! It's a dream of mine to sail solo to the South Pacific and you are an inspiration to me. You have the right attitude. People have become robots and fall into this this thing called consumerism. Don't buy the house, the car and all the bullshit that comes with this.
Stay free and ride with the wind! But remember, it's not about the destination, it's about the journey.

How am I supposed to do all of this? This lifestyle is made for rich people. Her going around and relaxing all of the time doesn't make her any money. Obviously someone is giving her the money for this.
