this is so true. i literally started my online boutique (Dope Fein Boutique) with only $25. it's crazy thinking back on it now, but the main thing that holds people back from starting their own business is the fact that they don't feel like they have enough money or enough resources etc when really all you have to do is start now with what you have, and from there continue to reinvest and build it up. like you said it's about discipline! it's also about how hungry you are, if you're hungry enough there's nothing that you can't do!

Regina chapton so true as believers we think that God already knows what we want, and he does. so we often times don't speak it. Earlier today I had that talk with him. I was precise, detailed and direct. Basically I spoke it into existence from my mouth to his hears. God spoke this world into existence and the scripture tells us that our words have power, that life and death is in the power of the tongue. Hours later I was doing some research and came across this video which has been a tremendous blessing and I feel like God has ordered this to be.

This is such good advice. I'm a web developer and when I see someone who is really trying to build a business I will bargain my prices. And usually when I do that they will refer other clients to me.

J Nicole the first thing I'd start with is by thinking about what your interests are and would they make a good business. From what I've seen the most successful businesses start with a person turning a hobby into income. One of my friends loves to crochet so she started crocheting baby things like little cute shoes and hats and stuff. Like the woman in the video she's a hair stylists so it makes sense for her to sell hair because she knows who her client is. So just think about what you like and how you can flip it.

Alexis Hernandez i sale extensions as well. Its all trial and error to me, I wouldn't say it's who to seek advice from its about what you do with the advice anyone gives. Test things, let your friends and family test it so you have different options, always ask for honest reviews and research everything. They will always be 20 answers, so go with works for you.

Thanks Ming! I started my company the exact same way you did, with the same mind frame, I had to go to the source. Unfortunately I allowed it to fold, never got help. Had very great hair suppliers whom I still have close contact with. When I'm done with school I will be revamping my passion.

We live in a small town that just has a Sally's and we all know Sally's do us sustas bad with the lack of products lol, it is a mostly Caucasian area but it its PLENTY of African American folks here, its a college town. But me and my husband is looking into starting a beauty supply store here, I have my own in home hair salon and service a lot of the ladies here with their hair care and always find myself ordering hair and products online for them.

Eb Z I live at the Delaware/Pennsylvania border. We have them but none of them are black owned. thought it would be a good idea now that I'm older I try to visit more black owned businesses. I tend to get better treatment/more respect than other places. lol once some places get my money they could careless about my issues.

I'm starting college in the fall for chemistry and my dream is to have my own cosmetic company for woc, and I plan to start selling in a couple months. I've recently started with formulas for highlighters and liquid lipstick and as I was wearing them to test out the wear, people were stopping me to ask where I got my makeup from!! I was so excited to know that people are actually interested in a product you plan to sell, even if some say that industry is "overpopulated." I started my business at 12 years old, up-cycling thrifted high waisted denim and creating handmade body chains, waist beads, anklets you name it. By 14 years old, I launched ByOgochukwu.bigcartel.com and established the core mission of the ByOgochukwu brand: "Expressing cultural pride through fashion, and bridging the gap of underrepresented minorities in the fashion industry."
7 years later I am a sophomore at The Ohio State University studying accounting, and still running my startup ByOgochukwu while being a full time student. We've participated in various fashion shows in and out of state and I'm always inspired to hear stories as yours because being a youth entrepreneur is not easy. Alex Jacob Yess i am a occupational therapist by day..but make wigs n sell bundles..and revamp couture clothing then resell the pieces...😣😩😒..butttt its incredibly difficult in this market it seems,especially with the ig promotion hookups etc..n larger social platforms....its hard to market your brand on a smaller platform.

I lived in Peru for 3 years. I stumbled upon a place where peruvian people were going to get their hair cut. Im telling you I sat there and video recorded a mother having her child's hair cut for the equivalent of $30. That same hair was being sold for $200. I immediately saw a business opportunity. BUT, I am having a hard time finding the balance between the 'perception ' of exploiting the people, and growing a business. Seeing the child crying, I dont know if i can morally justify it. What are yalls thoughts?

Ebony B it's just hair it will grow back. I'm a male and grew my hair for 6 years and had over a foot. I missed it but it grew back just the same.
I source hair directly from Asia and I had a hard time with this. Living out here for the last 4 years means I can control the process somewhat, but it's still difficult with every single bundle. Now I focus on hair from India, as it is a part of their tradition and religious belief to cut their hair as a sacrifice to God. Lot better that way x
Ebony B, go and do it, make them your loyal donors, and in turn, you can set them up with clothes or second-hand house products that they can use, not things that are too flashy you know, you don't want them to end up robbed because of those stuff, but you can help them with the most basics of household products! if you do that they'll be eternally grateful to you and would help your company out more eagerly!
