  • Using a digital multimeter, we run through different scenarios discussing what voltage and resistance readings we would expect, as well as we discuss the limitations of using a voltmeter vs an ohmeter for troubleshooting components in a circuit.

    Please keep making more animation videos over motor control and AC/DC electronics. You make things so simple, and easy to understand. Plus the animations makes it easy for people to see how it works in the real world

    Great video for beginners. Most people start with electrical theory and formulas. I have never found that to be an effective method for teaching. Starting with practical application and blending in the theory after mentees have a mental image really bolsters the learning process

      noobie here and this is the way it should be. theory doesn't work for me if I don't tinker with it first, it makes the process more enjoyable and you often have that "Eureka" moment when it all clicks in your head and there's no feeling like it

      Great Video! Forgive me for the intrusion, I am interested in your initial thoughts. Have you researched - Tarbbatigan clean errors Tip (do a search on google)? It is a smashing one off product for discovering how to fix electronic devices without the hard work. Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my friend Sam after many years got cool success with it.

    I thought if the switch is open, you should read any voltage across it because the impedance is so high no voltage should be traveling through the switch. Maybe I’m stupid but I’m confused.

    • @schulerruler
      @schulerruler  4 роки тому +1

      If the switch being metered is in parallel with a closed switch, it will not read a voltage as both sides of the switch would have the same potential due to the closed switch.
      If a single switch is open, and the load is removed, then there is also no potential across the switch as the wire between the switch and the load is essentially like waving the meter lead in the air as it isn't connected to anything at that point.
      Let me know if this helps clarify!

    Why is there 120VAC on both sides of the lamp? That would mean theer is OV across the lamp and it will never turn on.

    • @schulerruler
      @schulerruler  2 роки тому

      There isn't 120 on both sides, there is a potential of 120 across the lamp from the supply. I'm not sure how you mean 120 on both sides.

    Excellent detailed video. Thanks for sharing this. Why do you refer to the one side of the circuit as "identified"? Isn't that simply the neutral side? Just curious. Thanks!

    • @schulerruler
      @schulerruler  4 роки тому +1

      If it is just line 1 and the white wire it is the identified. If it is line 1, line 2 and a white common to both it is the identified neutral. The term identified means it is "identified as the grounded conductor" by being white or natural gray.

    Hi there sir I'm fairly new to the electrical industry , firstly this is an awesome video I just wanted to know why the voltage over the open switch is 120 Vac ? And if its switched on won't there be an short circuit ?

    • @schulerruler
      @schulerruler  3 роки тому

      There are many analogies to explain why this occurs, but the easiest is to think about potential difference. One side of the open switch is connected to one polarity at the source, and the other side is connected to the load, but with no current flow the load would not have a voltage dropped across it. At this point, the maximum potential difference would exist across the switch. To answer your second question, when the switch is closed, the load is now connected, and opposing current to the level inversely proportional to it's resistance. If it was just a switch connected to a supply with no load, then yes it would short circuit because the circuit would have zero, or almost no resistance/impedance, and current would be very high.

      Across a switch in series with a load it will read zero. Test it out. Always good to check what your unsure of.

    Id is identified as common or ground???

    • @schulerruler
      @schulerruler  5 років тому +2

      It would be considered the grounded conductor. Not to be confused with the ground wire itself, out the bonding conductor. Often referred to as a neutral, but in this case it is not truly a neutral, but the conductor "identified" as grounded.
      To simplify.... The white wire.

      You may want to adjust your volume. By adjusting the volume levels, you can make videos, or songs, or podcasts quieter or louder depending on your needs. Consult your user manual for whatever device it is you are listening on to find the location of the volume adjustment buttons. Sometimes it's a dial, or it may be a push button.
      Thanks for watching and commenting.
