@Sight After Dark! Edgar Winter on Keyboard, Saxophone & Timbales. Chuck Ruff on drums, Rick Derringer on guitar, and Dan Hartman on bass. Rick Derringer was best known for his big hit "Rock 'n' Roll, Hoochie Koo"1973! Dan Hartman was best known for his hits "Instant Replay" 1978, "Relight My Fire (featuring Loleatta Holloway)" 1979, and "I Can Dream About You" 1984!

Edgar was in The Music Store checking out the very latest in synthesizers. This one had just hit the market when he decided to strap it to himself calling it The keytar.
    Absolute musical genius.

The guitarist Rick Derringer had his first hit in 1965 as a member of The McCoys. The #1 hit was Hang On Sloopy.

The guitarist in the white jumpsuit is Rick Derringer. He was a founding member of The McCoys... you might remember their biggest hit, "Hang On Sloopy"(1965)... if not, you should look for the 1975 video on UA-cam, featuring a very lovely dancer... the vid will show you what sexy was in the mid '70s! ;-]

IIRC the guitarist here is Rick Derringer
Had a feeling when I saw you were reacting to the live version of this that it would be this one from BBC 2 TV's Old Grey Whistle Test which ran from 1971-1986. It was sort of the anti- Top of the Pops and would have alot of artists that weren't necessarily going to get into the top 40. This meant, like this, that bands could do longer songs and improvise more. Its a very good rabbit hole to go down for amazing performances, to name a few - Sensation Alex Harvey Band doing "Next" and "Delilah", Bob Marley and the Wailers doing "Stir It up", Talking Heads doing "Psycho Killer", Dr Feelgood, doing "Roxette", Focus doing "Sylvia", and The Tubes doing "White Punks on Dope"

The band lineup for this live performance is Edgar Winter (of course), Rick Derringer (guitar), Dan Hartman (bass) and Chuck Ruff (drums). Rick Derringer had a solo career and also formed the band, Derringer. Rock And Roll, Hoochie Koo and Teenage Love Affair were popular singles from him in the 70s. Chuck Ruff went on to play on two Sammy Hagar solo albums. Dan Hartman had a solo top 40 hit in the 80s called I Can Dream About You.
Ronnie Montrose played guitar on the studio version of Frankenstein. He would then go on to form the band Montrose with Sammy Hagar in 1973. Later, after doing a solo album and tour, Ronnie put together another band, Gamma.

I had the chance to see Edgar Winter twice. Once with his legendary band White Trash, and again with the Edgar Winter Group. The Winter Group released Frankenstein from their album, They Only Come Out at Night, and the song was a monster radio hit and Ronnie Montrose played guitar on it. This video recording of the song was with guitar-God Rick Derringer. You may remember Derringer from the Steely Dan songs Show Biz Kids, Chain Lightning and My Rival. The Edgar Winter's White Trash album is absolutely incredible. They were a blues/horns/Texas funk band with every single song amazingly great, a must hear!

The guitar slinger here is the great Rick Derringer, who also played with "Johnny Winter And" (That was the name of Johnny's band at that time.) Rick and Johnny TOGETHER was dangerous...they were both SO good. RIP Johnny! Johnny's band and this same Edgar Winter band in this video did a tour together in 1975, with Edgar's band opening, and then Johnny's band, and then (eventually) the bands came out on stage "Together" (the name of the album they made of the tour) and played old tunes from their past...all covers of great old rock and roll and Rhythm and Blues. Check out the rock and roll medley from "Together"...it smokes!

Edgar and Johnny of course were albinos. Saw His first band, White Trash, back in the day with J Geils Band. Stunning power, awesome energy, doubled over with talent. WT was mega-funky high energy R&B, lots of horns. Rick Derringer on guitar here, a semi-unsung guitar god. He played with Johnny as well. Suggestion: Mean Town Blues on the "Johnny Winter And Live" album. And/or Back in the USA on the WT "Roadwork" album. Rick shreds

Those Winter brothers just slay it all day everyday! My very first rock concert. Elf, Foghat and the Edgar Winter Band, Pocono Mountain Speedway 1974. This was huge on the radio when I saw them. My 14 year old ass was mesmerized in that sea of people. Had no idea that Elfs singer would turn out to be Dio. I had never seen anyone play slide guitar like Rod Price from Foghat. I thought those sounds came from one of those lap pedal things as seen on my parents favorite TV show Hee Haw. But these guys just killed it and turned me instantly into a live music junkie. This whole album, They Only Come Out At Night, is phenomenal and still holds up well today. A very cool ballad called Autumn and Undercover Man are cool AF deep tracks. Undercover Man was the B side on the Frankenstein 45. Whoever requested this, I salute you!

Edgar Winter is such a talented guy. Not just to be able to play 3 instruments, but to play them so well. I was lucky to have seen them at this time...incredible. The drummer was Chuck Ruff (RIP), the bassist was Dan Hartman (RIP) and the guitarist was Rick Derringer (ex McCoys "Hang On Sloopy from 1965") on this one, original record was with Ronnie Montrose on guitar. Saw them do this in a small gym in Davenport Iowa and they blew the roof off the joint.

Saw Edgar 5 or 6 years ago........they play "stump the guitar player" when Edgar would scat ridiculous vocal lines and the guitar player would repeat them right back......they keep doing it until the guitar screws up a line......you should hear him sing "Tobacco Road" with Johnny W. on guitar

A fun performance that i've seen many times. I saw The Edgar Winter Group open for The Allman Bros. around 1980. They were excellent. They played Frankenstein, of which was extended a little, but not like this performance. As stated, the guitarist is Rick Derringer, of whom had a bit of success...ie: Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo. The drummer Chuck Ruff was great and Edgar can play just about every instrument on the planet.

Mary Wollstonecraft(sp.?) Shelley was married to poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. 'Frankenstein(the Modern Prometheus)' has long been one of my very favourite books, along with Harper(another odd woman's name) Lee's 'To Kill A Mockingbird'. Yippee, right? 🥳🎉😂😊
Bassist Dan Hartman wrote the other big hit for the EWG, 'Free Ride', and had at least one on his own, 'I Can Dream About You', the video for which may feature him in blackface as part of an R&B-style vocal group. Given the times, it seemed more aspirational, more a tribute than culture-appropriation type offensive. 🤷🏽
Guitarist(singer, in his own right)Rick Derringer was Johnny Winter's 2nd guitarist, I think before joining brother Edgar's band, and had a hit as a teenager with his band the McCoys with 'Hang On Sloopy'. He had his next hit on his own with 'Rock'n'Roll Hoochie-Koo', which had been a signature tune for Johnny Winter. Think he also wrote 'Still Alive and Well' for Johnny. Saw him with his own eponymous band 2nd on the bill to Aerosmith in '76, following Rory Gallagher (!!) and ex-Sha-Na-Na rocker Henry Gross, apologetic for loved-my dog, miss him-hit 'Shannon'. Weird, cool show, much like the times, again. 😂❤❤❤
I've never been able to decide or ascertain since rediscovering this clip along with numerous reactors, whether this was the version aired on Kenny Roger and the First Edition's early 70s Sunday night show 'Rolling on the River', taped at the CTV studios just east of Toronto out on Highway 401. Who knows? Who cares? Mox nix, right?
    Killing it, anyhoo. ✌🏼😊❤

I liked this song when it first came out. Was like a sugar rush. Like a sugar rush though, it soon went. I still think it's OK, but that's all. It's just blues/rock with synth taking the lead. He's at best and average keyboard player and saxophonist, like guitarist Derringer, but they seem to like that sort of stuff on the other side of the pond. It's like someone you've known your whole life puts on a hat and you don't recognise them 🙂. It's just blues!!!!
    Lightweight compared to his brother.
I did enjoy seeing this again, from a nostalgia point of view, so thanks for that David.

It's very "unfortunate" that Edgar is a dedicated Scientologist, a true believer. He produced, arranged, and performed on the Scientology album _Mission Earth_. It is said he donates large sums of money to the cult. This in my opinion makes him No Good regardless of the fact he's a pretty good musician.
