As one on the panel said, this coming year is an outlier year. At Purdue nowadays, the target for each incoming class should be 2, maybe 3 freshmen and 1 or 2 transfers. And I'd lean toward filling early exits with transfers. Painter's recruiting philosophy might be counterculture enough that it's successful.
I definitely get why portal signings are flashy but just like big free agent signings in the pros they don’t always work out. With TKR, smith, loyer, catchings, heide and Colvin it would be interesting to see what transfers would have wanted to come to Purdue. Especially with a more limited nil bankroll.
For any big ten player who shot 3 or more threes per game, Loyer was second in percentage behind Gillis. Heide was number 1 in eFG for power conference freshmen and Colvin was 10th. We’re gonna be ok
like most people these guys don't understand Painter and how he builds a program. If 3 or even 4 of these freshmen RS; there is plenty of talent to compete with anyone. And next year when most programs are hoping find the "right" guy in the portal he will once again have talented, Purdue experienced guys who have had a year to learn, understand and execute the o and d systems. They will hit the floor running the following year not learning the basics. Berg at 5 (he's has 2 years to learn from Edey); TKR at 4; Heide at 3; Loyer 2 and Smith 1, with Furst at back up to 4 or 5; With Colvin back uo at 2 or 3. With Catchings at Back up at 3 or 4. With Harris as Smith's understudy at 1. Painter values players with Purdue mentality and great teammate mentality and experience in the Purdue system over shear talent. The following year there will not be any portal guys either.
I'd rather be "bored" during the off-season and continue to win at the level Painter has the last 5 years than constantly be worried about portal drama. What a completely idiotic take
Didn't I say if I worked for the team, I would build it this way too? I agree with the strategy but as an outsider it's boring. Transfers are fun, I stand by it.
If heide and Colvin improve then they can be really good. Both are really athletic and can shoot. TKR is gonna be a focal point now too. Purdue will be more balanced than the years past.
I think a bit of a misunderstanding of the team building strategy for Purdue here by JR and Kent. Ultimate honesty in recruiting is our strategy and we have to stick with it. We cannot tell a guy we’ll bring him in and develop him if he just saw us recruit over the last 2 guys. We get good guys early and hold them bc of our reputation. We’re not sacrificing long term strategy for a possible short term gain of adding a transfer. Also, in case you haven’t noticed, Purdue doesn’t just pay for transfers. We pay guys in our system. We wouldn’t get any big names anyway. Who’s the last big transfer we got?? Answer is nobody. We aren’t here to hang offseason banners. We’re gonna compete for the B1G next season and the natty the year after. That’s the goal.
The last big transfer for Lance Jones. And I clearly said there isn’t anything wrong with how Purdue is doing it, I would want to do it the same way. I just think transfers are fun.
@@CasualBigTen Lance wasn't a big transfer, he wasn't on any lists. If we got the same type of guy this year, it wouldn't be "fun" to anyone. Lance ended up being good b/c Paint got what he needed and he filled a role very well. The system and his hard work made him more successful than a bigger name would have been in that spot. I think the issue is people think that not adding transfers is somehow suggesting we're losing or doing it wrong and I think that's what you were saying. Maybe some teams need them, but we don't operate that way. I think it's important to understand our strategy of not recruiting over guys and then maybe it would make more sense why we don't take them. We have to stay honest and we can't do that if we're taking transfers just to win offseason headlines.
…and as Painter said, Lance didn’t bring up NIL once in his recruitment. He just wanted to win. No one looked at him as a huge transfer, but Paint looked at his as a great Purdue fit.
JR saying Freshman not making a super big impact...Painter started Smith and Loyer their freshman year..Paint's gonna do it again and everyone is going to be stunned when it works...in Paint we Trust.. also you can't just bring in any player..they have to fit the team...Watch IU this year, I'd bet they are gonna have internal issues that will more than likely affect their on court play with all of these transfers

6:10 top 10 recruiting class if you don’t consider transfers. This Purdue class is ranked 22 overall when factoring in transfers as part of the incoming classes (which is reality). My source is 247. This team is too young to do shit next season. Hopefully they realize it’s a rebuilding year and stay together for 2025/2026
With Edey gone I think Purdue will struggle to make the big dance next year. I’m a die hard Purdue fan and have been watching since Painter took over. Now if they all stay together for 2 more years this team can win it all in Indy in 2026. Next year will be a rebuilding year even though we have a lot returning. Very young team incoming.
Why is Loyer starting? Furst & Wren in the front court. Heidi & Colvin at 3 & 2 & Smith at point would be legit. Loyer can’t play against high level athletes for long stretches. He should be coming off the bench.

It’s a good point that the west coast teams are watering down the league in basketball but it’s the opposite in football. Those 4 teams are going to have 3 of the last 6 spots at the end of the hoop season.
This is a serious question about a national finalist because they don’t play the BS musical chairs game to fill their entire team??? Besides they tried that with Nigel Pack and he went to Miami to get $800k. Purdue doesn’t have that kind of money to throw at guys. Maybe eventually with the NIL program building.
Painter is playing the long game. The COVID being over is going to drop things back down to more even level because teams can't as easily load up on all these old guys. The NIL bidding war probably isn't sustainable and realistically some of the higher rated recruits are going to be up for grabs with higher level programs opting for transfers
Also, this is an anomaly. Painter usually has a schollie available each year just in case he needs to bring in a guy. But it's unlikely that we ever take multiple transfers
Outside of a 30 mile radius (maybe even 10 or 20) of W Lafayette, the easy road is to be an IU fan. So, yeah, you don't just fall into being a Purdue fan.
