I met Lou when I was working at EternalCon, on Long Island. If I remember correctly it was the 2019 show. He really was very nice and took the time to meet and greet with the convention's volunteer staff.
The great thing about using Lou was that he really was very big and ridiculously strong. I remember a scene in which he bent over, and picked up actor Charles Napier (pretending to be unconscious) and held him him in his arms like a small child. He made a very convincing Hulk.
It's been a while since I watched this episode but I think the hulk winds up bringing the abusive dad's memories of his own abusive dad back next thing you know he was a babbling mess on the floor.
This is one of those episodes I’d rewatch over and over again, gave you an insight on abuse and domestic violence, I didn’t understand it back then. But I do now
He was recommended to them by Arnold Schwarzenegger, I saw in a documentary. I think they were work out buddies back in the day. I think initially they were trying to get Arnold to do the hulk in this show.
This was my favorite show as a kid. I used to try to summons my inner hulk, really I just ran around flipping coffee tables over and making everybody's life worse. The 80's were a great time to be a kid.
I have always maintained The Incredible Hulk TV series is an underrated gem. It had intelligent story lines and this one particularly upset me when I first watched it in the 70’s. I recorded this episode off the TV about six years ago and have still been too afraid to watch it, especially the final scene, which has much pathos. It rang very true with me, for reasons you can obviously figure. SPOILER: It has been near 42 years since I watched this episode. If I remember right, when the abusive dad deservingly gets the seven bells of sh1t, beaten out of him and is left sobbing and terrified, the son who he habitually brutalised goes to comfort him. Heartbreaking.
@Kelly Mojica Ahhhh......British phrase. If you provoke someone so much, they dish out a vicious and debilitating attack, you would have had ‘the seven bells of sh1t beaten out of you’. I heard it mostly up North. Glad you like it.
I was being raised in an abusive, dysfunctional home. My parents split up when I was young. Around 5-6 years old. My father was the nice, normal one who didn't believe in yelling at or hitting his kids. My mother was the abuser. She retained custody of us kids and her abuse didn't begin until after the split. As a result, I turned towards watching LOTS of TV every single day as a way to provide myself with escape and comfort from misery. The incredible hulk was one of many tv shows I watched and enjoyed. Even though in this show it's the father that's the abuser, this episode really spoke to me. I identified with it alot. Oh, how I wished a superhero, or anyone else would come to the rescue of me and my siblings from our mother. But much like the neighbors who give David banner the cold shoulder and ignore him when he pleads with them to help him help the child, our neighbors also did nothing for me even though they were well aware of my mothers daily abuse (and it was daily). As they could hear her yelling and screaming outside the 4 walls of our place. Especially in the summer when our windows were wide open because we had no air conditioning. Our neighbors would remark to us kids, "boy, your mother sure does yell alot".
I'm sorry to hear about that. What happened to you and to your siblings as children was atrocious. I truly hope that you and your siblings are living far better lives now.
4:45 he suddenly slips into an episode of post traumatic stress as he remembers his own childhood abuse and that no adult back then would help him, when he shouted "Ms. I need your help!" that was him terrified for the little boy across the street and correlating his suffering with himself, thinking he was a little boy being beaten, himself. and that's when Hulk came out.
No. Don't confuse this with the comic books. Banners abuse by his father wasn't even an issue at the time this show was on. Furthermore, David visits his father on the show at Thanksgiving, and though they have their issues, it's not from an abusive relationship.
Sad to say it's not just men that abuse, mine didn't hit me. The one you had to watch out for was my mother. Alcoholic and behaved bipolar, she gave inquiring authority's the big doe eyes and lied her butt off when they did a report
Lou Ferrigno who played the Hulk was actually deaf, he also trained with Arnold and was a contender in the Mr Universe comps. He was really good in this TV series all those years ago.

I had nightmares of the hulk chasing me. Until I saw the episode Lou ferrigno played a role as a bodybuilder and was face to face with the hulk. It's like it flipped a switch in my mind saying instead of fearing the hulk, why not try to become him. I used the creature as an image to give me courage instead of running away from fights, I defended myself. I decided to build up my upper body strength. That gave me confidence I needed. It’s not only the dad being abusive to his son that bothered me but the fact that the neighbors were being too selfish to even help. I felt his concern before he morphed into the Hulk.
I agree. Same thing works with neighborhood/street bullies who go off and calling other people with derogatory slurs and threats and intimidation.
I'm not so sure the refusal to help was out of selfishness. It was more out of fear. The man referred to Hollinger as crazy. And we're still living in a time when what people did behind closed doors was no one else's business.

I met Lou when I was working at EternalCon, on Long Island. If I remember correctly it was the 2019 show. He really was very nice and took the time to meet and greet with the convention's volunteer staff.
That's cool. I'd like to think that Lou is nice. I heard a story about him that didn't sound nice. It was funny, but not nice, lol.
The great thing about using Lou was that he really was very big and ridiculously strong. I remember a scene in which he bent over, and picked up actor Charles Napier (pretending to be unconscious) and held him him in his arms like a small child. He made a very convincing Hulk.

Absolutely bro.
@Kelly Mojica
Ahhhh......British phrase. If you provoke someone so much, they dish out a vicious and debilitating attack, you would have had ‘the seven bells of sh1t beaten out of you’. I heard it mostly up North.

I don’t think I did either. Watched it with my Dad when he had weekends with me.
Yeah loved this show growing up
I was being raised in an abusive, dysfunctional home.

I had nightmares of the hulk chasing me. Until I saw the episode Lou ferrigno played a role as a bodybuilder and was face to face with the hulk. It's like it flipped a switch in my mind saying instead of fearing the hulk, why not try to become him.
